Monday scent of the day 9/25

Posted by Robin on 25 September 2017 264 Comments

Jean Paul Gaultier

It's Monday and it's Comic Book Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

I am still commando, but my plan for this morning is to test Jean Paul Gaultier Scandal. If anyone has smelled it already, do comment!

Reminder: 9/29 will be Skank Friday! Wear something skanky. If you need help, try here or here. Suggested by Dawn and Ihadanidea.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

SOTW(week) – Absolue Pour Le Soir…in hefty doses..15 sprays today…on my scent eating skin this is about average for a bit of projection.

The weather is brutally hot and in the heat it blooms as a sweet honeyed amber…no real skank….and no one has commented so it is really not projecting…my skin is literally devouring it alive! have to place my nose up close to wrist to smell it.

Wow! I can’t do 15 sprays of anything without getting a headache, although I tend to reaply throughout the day. Do you reaply?

Sometimes yes, sometimes no depending on whether or not I am carrying the bottle…15 sprays is nothing for me…..like I said the skin eats it up…on clothes it lasts a bit longer but certain fragrances can stain clothes so I have to be careful.

9-12 is normal for me, and even so something might disappear in an hour or two. I find it odd that people here will talk about using up a 2ml sample they’ve had for years. 2 ml is what I wear in a day, and with less than that I’m often not happy I’ve really experienced the perfume.

I’m with you CM8, it takes a lot of perfume to leave an impression on my – I’m at 10 sprays of angel muse today.

It’s a bummer because we have to use more, right?

On one hand it is a bummer but on the other we can test out a lot more stuff…I have been known to go through eight tester vials in one day….it completely baffles me that folks can smell or project anything with just one spray….

Wow 15 sprays! I can only do 3 tops. My skin doesn’t eat perfume – radiates it! Hmmm, I feel an experiment coming on – 15 sprays of something I love this weekend perhaps? But what?

It might help if you spread the sprays out all over your body so as not to fumigate yourself if you are only used to three on average :)

There are certain perfumes like L’Eau d’Hiver and La Pausa that I need to spray a lot. I really wonder if it is your sense of smell? APlS is a half spray for me if I were to wear it. If I wear more than 3 sprays of anything, either my husband complains or my coworkers. You must go through perfume quickly!

I think it is both my skin and my sense of smell…Mr. CM8 is highly sensitive due to allergies but my 15 sprays did not phase him in the least…and I often shove my wrist under younger family members’ noses and they also say they can barely smell it. and yes, perfume goes very fast!

Started Skank Week with an easy hitter – 4160’s Dirty Honey. Def skanky, but in a slightly classy way. Low projection and a touch of sweetness, but with that skanky honey note humming in the background.

I am going to love this week!!!

    SotD Romanza, by Masque Milano.

Not really a skanky scent, saving those for the evenings. Dont want to scare my coworkers too much ;)

As for JPG’s Scandal, i tried it on a blotter a while ago. On paper it already smelled waaaay too sweet to my taste, I just couldnt convince myself then it would work better on my skin. Later I saw the bottle discounted. The department store was discontinuing it from their collection….

I think it was because they had bigger plans. A few weeks later they opened their whole new cosmetics floor, with a bunch of more exclusive/expensive brands added to their perfume collection (Amouage, Miller Harris, Tom Ford private blend, Linari…). They also have the new Serge Lutens bottles. And they are BIG and BOLD and I dont like them… :(

Well I am not complaining, in our small city we already had like 4 chain cosmetics stores where you can only find designer frags and zero ‘niche’/exclusives.

But in the end I prefer spending my money in the smaller independent perfume stores. Also, service is often better there, staff more knowledgeable…

…and sometimes I just dont want to be bothered by anyone at all, so yay for buying stuff online haha.

You know, I find almost all orange blossom (neroli? I can never remember which is which, and honestly am not positive I can smell the difference) kind of dirty. That inspires me to go dig up my own Seville a l’Aube and HG Dilettante. You know, as long as we are counting kind-of-dirty as skanky :)

Having never really grasped this whole skank concept, I thought I might as well wear fragrances with animalic notes, so I’m kind of sticking to this week’s theme. SOTD is Divine par Divine, “a lovely, powdery, buttery floral-animalic that smells lusciously expensive and isn’t”. The quote is from its review in The Guide.

Totally with you on not understanding “skank”, so I think I’m going to follow your lead. I just looked up “animalic” notes on Fragrantica and it listed Muguet Porcelaine. I wouldn’t have believed that if I hadn’t seen it, but they know better than I do so I’m going to start the week in that.

I think I have a problem with strongly scented body butters. They almost always give me headaches, whether I’m the one wearing them or whether they’re worn by someone near me. I wonder what the difference is between perfumes and body butters that makes the latter more headache-triggering for me. Different chemical compositions? Density of scent?

SOTD: Bottega Veneta Eau de Velours which is very pretty, moved it from the dabber bottle to a spray and gave myself a good 4-5 sprays.

I think the vintage parfum is stronger/spicer. I’ve only smelled the recent EDP/EDT and not the parfum, and those two are sharper to me. My vintage bottle has the date code in yellow, MD1, and was sealed when I bought it. I do have an EDP splash from the late ‘90s, and I was the original owner of that bottle. Starts off rough but ends up smelling ok. Long story about that bottle but it wasn’t taken care of.

The only possible code I can read on the bottom of the bottle is 3121, in raised glass, but your comments about the scent are very helpful. This has certainly had at least two previous owners. Thanks so much, Flopper.

Happy Monday Everyone! Skanky Friday, huh? What definition of “skanky” is being used? It can be interpreted so many different ways. For me, I can’t see myself wearing anything “skanky” – to me this means a scrubber. So, it will be interesting to see the different interpretations throughout the week.
My SOTD is Jo Malone’s Basil & Neroli. Didn’t realize I would like this one as much as I have. I am going to consider this a “fall” fragrance even if it isn’t considered one. I am inspired to wear fall fragrances after reading Erin’s top 10 fall list.

Honestly, any definition you want, although for me, it means dirty / earthy / animalic, not a scrubber. No point in your defining it as scrubber because then you won’t want to wear it :-)

No SOTD yet as I just got back from Dog Park Duty, but after a shower I’m going to be sporting Queen, my best cheap blind buy ever!

Wrapping it up here in Greenville in about 3 weeks and back on the road again, hoping I hit some cool crisp weather as I travel! Still in the 80-90’s here in SC…

For Pancake lovers, I dipped into my Pumkin Spice Pancake Mix this morning and I have to say, this is a delicious mix- the spice is just right, not overpowering but wonderfully subtle. I burned one side of a pancake and it still tasted great. This is the same company that puts out Paleo Pancake Mix, Birch Benders, who tout themselves as a “micro pancakery,” which is a bit much IMO, but I really love these mixes because they are travel friendly (just add water) and wonderfully flavored. I belong to the Pro Pancake Club, can you tell? ????

    Happy Monday to all!

Well, still up in the air, but generally west. I have submitted to hospitals in Oregon, Arizona, and Colorado so far. Also considering Washington and California. California has a ton of positions, but their licensing process is right out of the dark ages. I applied in May and still “pending.” It’s almost impossible to contact a live person to follow up. Contact is STILL via snail mail! They don’t email and I think there is maybe ONE person handling calls. Wait times >30 minutes…????

That sounds very exasperating. Surprised about it though, I would have thought California to be more up to date. Well good luck with your projects where ever they may take you :) The colder months are great in Arizona, I spent 6 months there in the early nineties, from the end of September till April, escaping the real desert heat.

Easing into skank week with Ambre Sultan. I never thought of this as particular skanky, but it gets mentioned sometimes in that context so I thought I’d give it a try for science. There is a little bit of a ‘body’ smell to it – not exactly b.o. or musk – but I would describe the skank factor as very low.

Preparing the last of decants and a bottle for swapping and that is all for this gal. I am done for now.

Drinking La Croix in coconut flavor as I feel like this heat wave I should be sipping something with an island feel, also listening to Bob Marley to add to the ambiance.

Speaking of Bob Marley, I forget which NSTer it was but want to thank you again for the One Love book for my littles ones. We read it last night at bedtime and I love the universal message. Thanks again!

Need some calm and positive attitude so I’ll go with Sylvaine Delacourte Helicriss. This is the most realistic immortelle (growing in nature and mixed with other native plants) that I managed to find, I am looking forward to receiving my travel spray of this one.

          25 September 2017 at 6:24 pm

I agree with you and for the same reason Sables did not work for me as I wanted my immortelle to smell like the places where I grew up and where I would catch that smell in the air (mixed with odors of other Mediterranean scrubs and lots of stones). Sables to me smells of how immortelle is rendered in perfumes, which is much stronger.

Yes, I did and I remember it as a bit harsh to my nose, but I should try it again and possibly compare to Helicriss (now that I have two little bottles of it). But I wonder, have you found anything that smells to you of shrubbery in SoCal? It seems there are several nocal (mostly forest) or LA (gardens?) fragrances, but how about some dry coastal scrub or chaparral?

Wearing Chanel No. 19 EdT and smelling really beautiful (2 compliments already!), while I wait in the ER after I twisted my ankle and fell at the subway station early this morning on my way to work. I do not learn yet that sometimes rushing does not have a good end.
I am waiting for the results of x-rays and hoping there is no fracture. I was able to reach work, but after an hour the pain was unbereable. Hoping for the best and considering myself very lucky compared to other people I see around me here.

I do not really have any shanky perfumes, except for Dzing and Bond No.9 New York Oud. I will wear them later this week. For sure the warm weather will make them shankier!
Going to read now what you all are wearing today.

I have loads of “skanky” perfumes, but like the civet note best, so I’m starting out with an oldie but a goodie–Avon “Occur!” Fragrantica says it was released in 1963 and it’s one of those everything-but-the-kitchen-sink blended florals of yesteryear. This one is heavy on the civet, oakmoss, and musk. I got mine from ebay and it was really inexpensive.

Yes! Those old Avon scents are marvelous. I have an Avon beehive bottle with a honeysuckle cologne that still smells great. As a teen I was given a bottle of Candid. I didn’t wear it much then but I would love to wear it now. There’s probably something niche that smells just like it and costs 10 times more, lol.

My very first bottle of perfume was a gift from my mother at the age of six…Avon Field Flowers…thus began my perfume obsession…Avon always had some really great stuff at ridiculously cheap prices…Ariane, Candid, Occur, Timeless, Sweet Honesty, Imari……as Tiffanie stated above, by today’s standards many of the old Avon’s would be comparable to niche and cost a whole lot more!

    Monday!

    1) A mild fall-ish day. Am in my lovely and trusty Boucheron for the fall season. I just love this scent because it becomes a pretty flowery spicy powder that hugs your skin and when you give people a hug everyone is all “Oh, but you smell so good!”

    2) Y’all should see all the figs, plums and grapes I have been gleaning! I think I may make some fig syrup and plum jam this season.

Plum jam is so good! I haven’t made any in several years.

(But there was an entire box of bananas left over from the high school cross-country meet on Saturday… I think they were actually leftover from the JV football game on Thursday and someone brought them to the meet to get rid of them, because they were SUPER overripe. So I mashed them up and froze them. 19 cups, yes, 19! cups of mashed banana in my freezer now. I can make 19 loaves of banana bread. :) )

I’m in AG Grand Amour…swapmeet spoils!

It is old school lovely and I am wondering if it is the EDT or EDP.

I’m tired. Have had one cup of coffee, a cup of black tea and now moving on to jasmine green tea for the finale!

I wanted to ask what folks think about the La Pausa EDP please?

I found the EDT beautiful but it was so fleeting I never pursued it.

I have been interested in all things iris of late and am wondering how people like the EDP…

Yeah, I don’t think I’ll manage to follow this week’s community project. Today, I am–like many of you–in swapmeet treats. Two hefty sprays of MH Geranium Bourbon ought to keep me afloat on this sleepy Monday :)

My old voice teacher from back when I lived here before leaving to do my PhD asked me to audition for a role in an upcoming opera. She asked me this last night. Not wanting to violate after-hours noise restrictions, I didn’t get to practice last night or this morning. In fact, I haven’t really practiced opera since last December–you know, right before I needed to defend my thesis. So. Clearly this audition is going to go wonderfully. (What’s the top of my range nowadays? I have no idea! What kind of vocal agility have I got? No clue!) I’ve chosen an audition piece that relies more on emotion than on technical skill; hopefully I won’t embarrass myself with that. Cross your fingers for me.

Good morning, NST, everywhere. I’m being resolute about spring: it may think it’s going to slide away and elude me, but it’s got NO CHANCE, and I hope it’s listening. So, because spring IS has arrived, albeit a little tentatively, I’m wearing Cashmere Mist. It doesn’t get a lot of love here, but I really like it. I thinks it’s warm and pretty, sweet, soft and girly, and it suits my move into flowing pleated skirts, lace undershirts and lighter jackets, and all that spring clobber. Skanky and sophisticated it isn’t: pretty and undemanding it is. Sometimes “pretty” is plenty.

Titus and Alexander are playing train robbers. Titus is tunnelling under the duvet, and Alexander is leaping on the moving train, trying to hold him up. The chaos from this good game is astounding, but I wouldn’t seek to distract them, because it saves chaos somewhere else where it would even more annoying. Eric is watching, not participating, but clearly taking it all in. This is ominous: he’s probably working out ten ways to produce more chaos with only half the effort.

    Be well, all.

Works been too busy for more than the occasional peek here – Wah! – but just a note that I am loving the new Trudon perfumes. Or at least Bruma, Deux, and which I am wearing today, and Revolution. I haven’t fully explored the others yet. I even bought a full bottle of Bruma and can attest that the bottles and sturdy glass caps are amazing. So a perfume win all around for me, even if 100ml is a ridiculous amount.

    Cheers to all!

SotD = Prada Les Infusions Amande

Amande is the opposite of skanky. Perfect for this Monday of hot weather and a scheduled power outage from 2 to 5 pm. What’s worse, no internet or no A/C? Tough choice.

Another hard question, have you counted your full bottles recently? or ever? No need to answer, but I was asked this weekend, so I counted all bottles 30 ml and larger. Turns out I have 25% more FBs than I thought. Whoops!

I used to be so incredibly disciplined in that I never allowed myself to exceed 10 bottles…this went on for about forty years…then I discovered perfume blogs and samples and decants became available and all h**ll broke loose!!! Now , I am not sure how many are technically mine in my house as we share everything (including those I gifted to family members) and everything is scattered in various bedrooms , bathrooms and in the basement and even at college…but if I had to guess, maybe 30-40 beyond 30ml bottles in the CM8 household? That is an interesting question…I may inventory when I get home!

I have a database of most perfumes I have, including all sizes of bottles, decants and samples. My rule is: I do not test new perfumes before I enter it into the database (though sometimes I allow myself a day or two lag between the first try and the recording but I record the use of it – and later add the perfume itself). So I know exactly how many bottles I have at any given moment. Much more than anybody needs but less than some other perfumistas I know :)

A few days away from NST and I feel so out of touch! Woo-hoo for skank week!

No skank today, though. SOTD is Atelier Cafe Tuberosa, from a sample I got at Sephora over the weekend. The coffee blast is awesome but only lasts about 30 seconds. The rest is nothing groundbreaking, but I am loving wearing it. I also tested Gabrielle and have to agree with what many others have said — seems to be a watered-down ghost of Coco Mad. Coco Mad smells like some kind of solvent or cleaning product to me, and Gabrielle was MUCH more wearable. I didn’t have to scrub it, but it certainly didn’t tempt me.

I went to a play last Friday and was sitting next to an older gentleman who had a clean lotion-y smell. It was so pleasant I almost asked him if he was wearing lotion and what kind, but he pretty much had his eyes closed the whole time haha!

HA! I tested both of those at Sephora this weekend. I oversprayed the AC so couldn’t smell Gabrielle very well even though I sprayed one little patch of my wrist with it about 8 times. ACs almost always have major projection on me and Cafe Tuberosa was HUGE on my skin. It also ended up being a HUGE scrubber for me; what I smelled of the Chanel was not terribly exciting, though I did get the Coco Mlle connection. I’d be up for trying Gabrielle again.

First skank scent of the week was Eris “Night Flower”.

    Top: bergamot, birch and cardamom;
    Mid: suede, tuberose and cinnamon;
    Base: patchouli, tonka and musk.

I am usually anosmic to musk but can appreciate this one. Of course teh downside of a 5am start and a morning flight is no scent can really survive much beyond lunchtime. Given how this is a make-or-break week for us to show consummate professionalism, I’m tickled at the thought of doing it while smelling like a skanky ho. (Well, I am a contractor after all…)

I’m kind of shocked at myself for selecting MKK to start the week, but I used only a few dabs. My work is supposed to be scent free, though no one enforces it and I smell perfume on others. However, the coworker I share an office with is fairly perfume sensitive so I try to be considerate of her. Anyway, the few dabs have worn off completely and now I’m scentless!

Much too warm today for skank so I went with No 19 Poudre. It sort of reminds me of Au Dela by Bruno Fazzolari. I’m wondering if anyone else noted this comparison? Anyway, I sprayed AM and at noon. Since it faded, I’m trying my first spritz of Mexique. It is beautiful but remarkably similar to the EDP.

Inspired by Lovestosmellgood, I started testing some samples from Annick Goutal over the weekend, and continued doing so today. SOTD = AG Folavril. What a pretty floral! Perfect match for my weather today, too!

Bear inspired my extra-long workout today. So kudos to two NSTers!

I wish they would bring Folavril back, such a great scent.

SOTD = Guerlain Mon Precieux Nectar

This is another one of my practically all season perfumes…so pretty.

One day business trips are nice and horrible at the same time. Nice because I don’t have to pack and I get to go home to my own bed. Horrible because the commute can be looooooong and really a waste of time I could use to catch up on work that is not conducive to doing while commuting. Anyway, all these to say I have one such day to break up the week on hump day. The trip is for a very good reason but wah, I can’t afford the time!

You can never do all the work you think you need to – stop stressing about it!

If you use public transportation, you should read something interesting – you won’t notice the trip time. If you have to drive – audio books! :)

Posting super late but participated today in FM Musc Ravageur. I read both previous posts Robin linked. I was surprised by all the perfumes people cited as skanky that I’ve worn and never noted as one bit skanky. I thought I’d wear some of them this week and look for the skank. Didn’t smell any in FM MR, so there you go. I suspect I either have a high tolerance or that my skin tones it down, but think it’s more the latter.
