Wednesday scent of the day 8/9

Posted by Robin on 9 August 2017 275 Comments

Philippe Dumas sketchbooks from Hermès

Hump Day, and Book Lovers Day! What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in good old Hermès Vétiver Tonka.

Reminder: on 8/11, wear a fragrance with vetiver, if you have one. (Need ideas? See 5 perfumes: vetiver fragrances for fall, winter, spring, summer.)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image shows Philippe Dumas sketchbooks from Hermès: "On the occasion of the release of a ninth sketchbook inspired, by Metamorphosis, Hermès’ annual theme for 2014, Actes Sud and Hermès have decided to republish the entire collection of sketchbooks inspired by the Émile Hermès collection, which Philippe Dumas created between 1988 and 1995: L’Exotisme, Vivre la France, La Vie à l’air libre, Voyage en Extrême-Orient, La Mer, Le Cheval, Le Soleil and La Route." In French with English or Chinese text inserts, $15 each.

    Flower by Kenzo L’elixer

Everyone is getting summer colds in my household…

Chubby Buddha has a cough, I am sneezing and my honey had a sore throat. So far my oldest is symptom free.

    Wearing LeLabo’s Vetiver Oil.
I don’t care for the EDP, but the oil has a lovely depth.

For anyone who was interested in trying the Berdoues line, Beautyhabit has a discovery set on sale ( no affiliation – I just wish they shipped to Canada)

Ha! I’m not usually in the business of discouraging perfume buying. I don’t know your tastes well enough to know whether this would be a good buy for you or not, honestly.

As you can see, Chocolatemarzipan loves the line, and I wasn’t impressed with most of it. Maybe CM can tell you why she liked them so much, but speaking for myself, it wasn’t really a matter of entirely disliking the fragrances. I just thought most of them were of the “pleasant enough but not particularly compelling” variety. I think the only one I actively disliked was Somei Yoshino because I thought it smelled like an air freshener. The ones I liked the best are Arz el-Rab and Selva do Brasil, if that is at all helpful.

          Thanks!
Yes I totally understand, if you dont know my preferences its kinda hard to tell.

I feel like i am still on a journey, trying to find out what i like and do not like.
I always try to keep an open mind and like a lot of styles/brands.
But scents and notes that really resonate with me seem to be more on the intense/darker/warmer/smokier/dirtier side of the scent spectrum. But I also love some of the Hermès (to me that is clean and fresh and safe for office, but at the same time not boring).

Oh well, there is a store here in the Netherlands that carries the line. I think I just need to pay them a visit or order a few samples. :)
Its just…that coffret LOOKS so nice. Haha

Here’s a review that Lucas did of three of them-

          https://chemistinthebottle.wordpress.com/2017/06/30/triple-trip-with-maison-berdoues/

the Oud al Sahraa is a jammy, resinous amber on my skin and the Arz el Rab is very heavy on the cedarwood but diaphanous nonetheless.

If you are looking for dark and dirty you won’t find it with the Cologne Grand Cru…but yes, the coffret is nice looking and the full size bottles even nicer!

Because I can still use more scents that are suitable to wear to work.

Victoria always has great book recs. She told me to read The Black Russian by Vladimir Alexandrov, and I did not think the writing was fantastic but the story is so fantastic it’s worth reading anyway.

    SOTD is Diptyque Vetyverio.
It’s not what I expected – more vetiver/musk then vetiver/citrus. That is I can definitely smell citrus from the vial, but it dries in seconds on my skin, and the scent becomes powdery and clean.

I just started another vetiver ‘face off’ :)

    Encre Noire vs Sycomore (edt)

    first impression (after an hour)
yes, they are 1st degree relatives, like siblings, but
Sycomore is a bit sweeter (is it pepper?), softer and smoother (more elegant)
Encre Noire is a bit more blunt, rootsy/earthy

    I love them both,
    let see how they develop
if i rememer EN is more linear

It doesn’t seem too terribly hot today, so I’m thinking T-Rex and I will do some exploring downtown today. There are several lovely parks for lunch, a great waterfall, the Reedy River, and the 22 mile Swamp Rabbit Trail that goes through it all.

Have an outstanding hump day, NSTers!

Someone told me here is an expected influx of thousands of people from nearby areas just outside of the path totality, so I’m expecting to leave very early to get to my location. Hope you and your co-viewers have a blast in Santee????

    Smelling goooood, Robin!
    Love Vetiver Tonka.

And happy that it’s Book Lover’s Day! I was just thinking about how I’m always reading at least 3 sometimes 4 books at once. I do a mix of fiction & non-fiction, but I guess I just like variety. I read easy stuff on my train ride home since the brain is fried by then, and more challenging reads in the morning and on the weekends.

For me today, Eau des Merveilles. The citrus in this is so beautiful.
Went by the Hermes story yesterday on Broad St. on the way home, didn’t enter, but eyed those lovely scarfs in the window. One day one will be mine.

That is interesting. Might swing by the Ulta closer to my house later and check it out. I went to another one over the weekend, and they didn’t have the new aromatherapy ones, at least not yet. I’ve been kind of wanting to revisit Tibetan Mountain Temple, but I never see it anywhere. I thought it was discontinued, but I see it’s still on Pacifica’s site.

Tibetan Mountain Temple is impossible to find now (except on the Pacifica website)…my local health food store used to carry it for fifteen dollars…no more…I am wondering if that is the next one to be d/c because the products in that scent have decreased in numbers…..

Eau d’Hadrien, from a little sampler bottle I was given in around 1994 (gasp) in connection with the purchase of a full bottle of something else, given as a gift. Wish I could recall what that was. I seem to recall that, while I must have liked it, it was not a hit and may never have been worn. This sample, in any event, is in great shape.

I had purchased numerous AGs in the early to mid 1990s (back in the day when they had BOGOS and two 100ml bottles could be acquired for under one hundred dollars)…I had Hadrien (and drained it pretty quickly) …last time I smelled it in its reformulated version I think it had less depth and was a bit more citrusy…at least that is what I remember…I will be curious as to your take on the comparisons.

Even if it was much stronger, not likely it means it costs them *that* much more to make. I do think brands are being careful now not to have their luxury perfumes seem too much cheaper than other brand’s luxury perfumes. Because price = luxury!

I love to read and am in the middle of rereading Cold Sassy Tree by Olive Ann Burns (among others – always seem to have at least 3 books going). Highly recommended.

I’m in the remains of Hermes L’Ambre des Merveilles which I sprayed at Neiman Marcus yesterday as consolation for walking 2 miles to the NM to sniff some MFK fragrances – turned out they only had 3 and not the ones I wanted to try. I wasn’t overly thrilled with L’Ambre yesterday but it smells delicious this morning.

Ah, you must be on the eastside? That’s where I lived for 10+ years and I have to say I miss the proximity to the shopping there. Easy & free to park, reasonable traffic, all the stores in one small geographic area, plus groceries (stop by H Mart if you haven’t yet – I also really came to appreciate the 365 store at Bellevue Square) and lots of options for picking up dinner to take home. Super convenient. I’ve heard the new noodle house 1 block N of Main is great, btw.

My congestion is starting to clear up now after a sinus infection, so I’m wearing Musc Ravageur. The initial sprays from my first 100 ml bottle of Frederic Malle. I went through several samples and a travel spray of MR and kept craving more so I knew it was time. I got it during the Barney’s summer gift which makes it extra nice. I always try to time any Frederic Malle purchases when they have a beauty bag event going. And my SA’s are always extremely generous with samples of everything. FM has an especially chic little black glass droppers to sample the body oils.

Carner Barcelona D600 today. A decant shared by a kind NSTer and I’m really impressed with this fragrance. Just a single spritz for the office which ends up being the perfect amount. It was a touch overwhelming when I went with 3 the other day at home.

In Timbuktu again (I did take a Fat Electrician detour yesterday, but it was almost all marrons glacés and very little vetiver). Getting something particularly green and sharp today – almost like celery. I suppose it’s the mango and some other note. It’s good.

Spring growth and fresh breezes…what better way to end weather/elements week than with a dab of Vent Vert. If only life were that simple. Off I trot to the perfume counter …no Vent Vert. I explain myself: Do you have any vents, soleils, monsoons, neiges, storms, l’orages, nuages, mists….for a project? And that is how I came to leave Farmers ( our dept. store) wearing Beyonce Heat (seduction ).
Happy book lovers day! I’m going to do a week of matching perfumes in my collection with books on my shelves ( Beyonce Heat Seduction / Edmonds Cook Book ).

Went down to NY yesterday and am now enrolled back in acupuncture school. Went to Osswald and met Daisy (whom I had heard of from Hajusuuri) and discovered that there is now a pet adoption place a few doors down. Kitties and perfume– I predict that that the combo will have me spending more time on that block.

    SotM = Masque Milano Romanza

Verrrrry pretty. I spritzed from a carded spray sample, and lo and behold, there’s vetiver! Not a lot, but it’s there, adding a dusky, dusty, green-brown note. The card says “Victorian Narcissus” which sums up the scent. I first tried Romanza from a dab sample, and it was more floral. Will try it again. I like it.

Have a wonderfully fragrant Wednesday, NST!

At my house, every day is Book Lover’s Day! I’m wearing California Reverie, with nary a vetiver note, because it’s still horridly hot and humid and smoky here. CR makes it all a little bit better.

I started my Red Cross Disaster volunteer training yesterday and was surprised by the first one–Food Service Safety. I think I was expecting First Aid or Rubble Removal for Beginners. If I’m a volunteer at your disaster, I will be watching food temps and washing my hands a lot.

Beginning with food safety seems wise. My mother thinks that I am some kind of germaphobe (I’m totally not) because I employ basic food safety practices. I’m just trying not to give myself or anyone else a foodborne illness.

(She does not employ such practices and took my entire extended family down one Christmas, spreading a Norovirus via a family dinner.)

Spritzed (okay, sprayed myself down with) Guerlain Vetiver edt early this a.m. It’s still there and, interestingly, smells nutty and dry on one arm and creamy and sweet on the other.

Also twinning (tripleting?) in Hermes Vetiver Tonka applied to one inner arm. This is one I’ve always liked very much but not loved. I realized today that I’d love to smell it on someone else, so will encourage my H to wear it.

Plan to dab either Atelier Vetiver Fatal or Fat Electrician later – or may end up in No 5 EdT, which I’ve been eyeing all morning.

    Happy Hump Day!

Late as usual today. Wore Onda yesterday for a rich wondering vetiver.

Today was Fille de Berlin for the happiness factor as I had a traumatic interaction with Nuit de Bakelite last night and needed help recovering. It is truly horrible on me. Burnt plastic baby doll and, my person claims, poo. I couldn’t detect that aspect and hope he was being metaphorical. I am sure it is lovely on others as the notes sound great and it’s been getting lots of positive reviews. And I love Naomi Goodsir’s other perfumed. But terrible on me. So I showered and put ok Rosenthal last night and La Fille de Berlin today as roses cure all ills.

A small bottle of Dasein spring just reached me though so one arm has vetiver now!
