Friday scent of the day 7/7

Posted by Robin on 7 July 2017 302 Comments

bike

Happy Sports Friday! (And, happy World Chocolate Day.) Our community project for today: wear a sports scent! If you just can't go there, wear the sort of fragrance you think one might actually wear while doing something sporty.

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

After a week of perfect weather, we are expecting rain today. My sporting plans: finish the really nasty sections of the jigsaw puzzle we started yesterday. As a sign of support for the Tour de France cyclists, see if I can eat the 6000 calories they burn each day. Perhaps a wee nap? My scent for all of that is the ever-versatile Terre d'Hermès.

Reminder: on 7/14 we're celebrating Bastille Day! See if you might possibly have anything French in your collection? Extra points for extra-French-ness, or for silly perfume Frenchification.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the Chatham-1 Step-Thru Single-Speed Beach Cruiser Bike by Critical Cycles is on mark down, $179.99.

I heartily approve of your vacation activities Robin :)
Wearing Eiderantler from January Scent Project over La Tulipe body milk.
I smell of ferns and flowers and not sporty at all, but the combination is very pleasant.

I’m wearing Chanel Allure Homme Edition Blanche. Don’t know if it’s that sporty, but it’s an easy refreshing wear.
Nice bike in the photo, sort of simplistic retro looking.

the closest thing that I have that resembles a sport fragrance is a miniature bottle of Serge Lutens L’Eau. As much as I love Serge Lutens, this isn’t a favorite scent of mine. I’m wearing Jean Patou Vacances, vintage Ma Collection eau de toilette which I just bought on eBay. So beautiful!

I always liked mint-colored bikes and I don’t know why.

I don’t think that my perfume us sporty but I like it anyway.

    Cologne Nocturne. Le Galion.

I think I’m wearing the current formulation (it’s from a decant), but thank you for the input – I’ve been wanting a FB and am waffling over whether to track down a vintage bottle or go with current. You might have made up my mind for me!

I love the vintage, more oakmoss and depth than the current version. Although the cost is probably through the roof on flea bay.
If you can find Patou’s Eau de Patou, it’s very similar in vibe. Both are sporty citrus chypres, the Eau de Patou is a touch more floral/spice.

I’m in the last of my decant of Chanel Bel Respiro, vividly bright-green and bitter at the top, then irisy and sophisticated. (And I don’t even like iris, but this is so well made and so Chanel that it works somehow.) It smells like a really expensive sport scent for well-compensated athletes.

I’m on my third day of controlling sugar in my diet. It is absolutely addicting and tolerance develops, so you need more and more!! I’ve stashed away my chocolate collection, so it will be a virtual celebration of World Chocolate Day. Wishing everyone who can actively indulge a delightful time.

SOTD is Parfums de Nicolai L’Eau de Sport. It’s citrusy and herbal
and longevity is surprisingly good. I had on Habit Rouge EDP, which was the first sport idea that came to mind, but it reminds me of men leaving the basketball court full of balls AFTER they have showered and dressed to go out.

Chloe Love Story sample and 75%Dark chocolate here. Some one sent me a sample- so
I read the reviews and expected Love Story to be awful. But it’s not. I wouldn’t want a fb but its nice for a summer outside casual floral scent. I’m surprised by the nice smell floating around me. I like it enough I Might keep a sample around.

That’s a really pretty bike. Puzzlin’ sounds like the perfect rainy day activity.

I am wearing TDC Tokyo Bloom, but it’s already almost gone after a couple hours. You inspired me to do Terre d’Hermes EDT next. I can’t do the EDP because smells extremely savory to me, sort of like bacon.

    Lovely bike!
At the moment I am one of the few Dutchies who does not have a bike.

    As for the sport theme.

I had all kinds of ideas for sporty based on my own sporty experiences.

Ballet: something woody (think of those polished wooden floors) layerd with something extremely animalic/musky/sweaty. Ballet is a very difficult and intense sport imo.

…and horse riding: Sarrasins, Tabac Tabou (hay!) came to mind.

But I ended up wearing French Lover, because I knew I had to spend 2 hours in a meeting room with a colleague today.

French Lover can be associated with an outdoor sport though, smells like looking for your golf or tennis ball somewhere in the soil of an overgrown and unkept garden.

I actually have two sports fragrances that I could wear if I were so inclined. They are leftovers from my pre-perfumista days. I haven’t worn them in a decade. They are Nautica Woman and Jockey Physical Woman. What I chose to wear today was PdN Balle de Match. I really love this one. It has a blast of grapefruit at the top, but not the slightly funky, sweaty grapefruit of Pamplelune. This one is juicy and bright. Anyway I love it, and it is FBW. Thank goodness that Luckyscent has 30ml bottles for a decent price. It has been renamed, but as long as the juice is the same I don’t care.

I’m not sporty, but if I were, these are the people I want to be like. Although it was put out by ESPN, this little clip is about much more than sports. It’s about humanity, courage, kindness, and gratitude. If you have 14 minutes, I hope you watch and feel your heart open wide! Sport on, NSTers!

Wearing Fleurs De Sel and walking the beaches of the Outer Banks in my imagination. It’s been a bittersweet week. The 5th was my birthday, and I ordered a bottle of Monserrat to wear for the rest of the summer. But yesterday we had to put down our sick kitty – she had grown so week and we didn’t want her to suffer anymore. She was only 11, which is relatively young for a cat, and our home feels like it has a hole in it. It’s hard for the other cats as well, I know they are wondering where she went.

I went with Estee Lauder Bronze Goddess. I think this is the Eau Fraiche version but it’s not well marked. Anyway, it’s making me wish I were sunning myself on a golden beach with a giant floppy straw hat and a big umbrella. Not that I can fit into my swimsuit anymore, haha. Happy Friday everyone!

Wearing No. 19 today, which is perfect for all occasions, so presumably one could wear it for some athletic activity, though I wore it for some support during a phone interview. It seems that whining about lack of response from job applications worked a little, as I got a callback for a summer job AND an e-mail about teaching an extra class in the fall (don’t know if I’ll be allowed to take it, but it is nice to know I’m not constitutionally incapable of earning money).

Put my hair in a bun for the interview, will now use No. 19 to help me feel like a ballerina.

I helped myself to a couple of spritzes from my husband’s bottle of Dior Homme Sport. This was purchased by me, and is mostly ignored by him in favor of his beloved Pinaud Clubman Special Reserve. It’s fairly sweet and rather well-blended; I’m having trouble picking out individual notes.

When I was a kid, we had an old cabin at the beach. No TV, no phone, and if the interior decor had a theme, it was “what’s on sale at Goodwill?” My mom used to say that with 4 kids and a dog tracking in sand all summer, there was no point in having anything else. One of her Goodwill buys one year was an old croquet set. We had no idea how to play croquet, and there wasn’t any flat land around the cabin, so we invented the sport of Dunes Croquet. Much harder to play than regular croquet; you can imagine what it was like trying to whack those wooden balls up and down and over sand dunes! Ah, good memories!

So my SOTD is Tokyo Milk Sea and Sky, which does a great job of recapturing the brisk, salty air of the ocean and dunes.

Heatwave continues. I will wear colognes all day – 4711 this afternoon, Eau de Guerlain for evening, Cologne du 68 at bedtime, with Atelier Cologne samples for added fun throughout.

Wearing cologne is a bit sporty, yes?

I don’t know Close Up. I finally got to try Black Phantom which has a very strong coffee note in the opening, almost bitter actually. But the chocolate and almond kicks in and it’s becomes very gourmand. I prefer Intoxicated. Have you tried A*Men Pure Coffee? Still hoping to find a tester to try it.

Today’s scent is the lovely Arielle Shoshana you all have been raving about! Super juicy passionfruit for the first three seconds, and then settles into something a lot like Galop.

This is sporty because…uh…because I wore it après sport last night (I’m getting a head start on silly Frenchification; super-easy for me because I still think in entangled Franglish, a souvenir of my recent three-year tenure in France).

I’ve never really understood the marketing of perfume as a Sport fragrance which just goes to show I’m not the target there. I’m assuming they are “fresh and bracing” and in that sense I think VT fits the bill.

I’m another in Balle de Match today. Like Robin, this was one of the first niche scents I bought after discovering that perfume didn’t have to be bought in a department store. It still smells really good and I wonder why I don’t wear it more often–only once or twice a year. However, that might be a function of how many scents I have, all demanding attention.

I am eating world chocolate from a NZ company, Bennett’s, that Waterdragon gave me. The chili ones are especially good. The box is almost empty…

Guerlain Vetiver is the closest thing I have to a sporty scent. Wearing an older version today. I think Dior Homme Cologne would be perfect for today’s theme. Don’t own any but sure wish I did! ????

My sport today was dodging raindrops on my way to work. My walking commute is about a mile long – plenty of time to get good and wet if it’s raining.

SOTD is Diptyque L’Eau de Neroli. I’m on theme in the “sport” deodorant I put on this morning :)

Finally, I’m on theme! SOTD vintage Trophée by Lancome – there’s a golfer on the bottle, the name has an addition saying ‘pour le sport’ and the cap has the structure of a golf ball – as sporty as could be, right?
Many years ago, my mother got a bottle of this from friends from France as a gift, and although it was marketed as a men’s scent, she loved it and so did I. About two years ago I bought my own bottle off ebay for cheap. It’s the perfect scent for hot weather – a fresh green chypre with notes of basil.
Other than that, no sport today. or does running behind your kid count as sport? ;)

When I think sporty, I think clean & herbal. SOTD is Viva by Fergie, which I purchased after reading Jessica’s review back in 2013. I definitely pick up the vetiver and a bit of the lavender. If I were golfing, this is what I would wear. But it’s raining heavily today, so I’ll just have to appreciate what the rain is doing for the local golf courses.

Morning, NST. It’s cold, colder, coldest: I wish the weather would find a reset button! Not that it’s anywhere near as cold as Central Otago, where Kanuka is, but all things are relative. I want a WARM sporty scent…no, actually, I don’t: I’ve just discovered that I don’t want a sporty scent at all. I want high glamour, to encourage the performing of housework, which I am mentally trying to imbue with adventure and noble endeavour. My mental effort isn’t paying off, but Nahema is. This is the richest, most photo-realistic rose perfume I know. Sporty I am not, but gloriously, glamorously rosy I am, and watch me go! I will subdue the the uproar and chaos with steam mop and vacuum cleaner and leave a whisper of deep red rose behind me as I go.

    Be well, all.

Swanning about in Dior’s Feve Delicieuse. Yes, swanning is a sport I excel at ( thanks to my good southern upraising). I’m also quite good at lounging & languidly fanning myself while sipping a cool libation, while maintaining a pleasant disposition and, if I must, exchanging in witty repartee.

and just out of curiosity, have you tried Dame Perfumery’s Monsoon? The featured note is ‘creosote’ which I believe is a plant indigenous to the Arizona region where Jeffrey Dame resides (correct me if I am wrong!) I haven’t had the chance to try it yet but every time I see your avatar name I think of that perfume :)

Yes, you’re right: it’s a native plant, and Mr. Dame is here. Creosote is my favorite native plant, and it’s largely responsible for the heavenly smell of the desert after a monsoon (thus its inclusion in the perfume). I’m dying to sniff it, but I haven’t ordered a sample yet because it’s just so freaking hot here!

I’m so completely non-sporty that I can’t even get my brain around the idea of a sports scent, I assume it would be something light and fresh so that I didnt suffocate myself as I puffed, panted and wheezed my way through something energetic :)

I did karate classes for a few years a while back, before I fell down the perfume rabbit hole. I think something with incense or wood would go with that, but sadly I didn’t have anything like that at the time.

Meanwhile, I have a builder coming around this morning to look at kitchen plans, so I think go with some confidence building Mitsouko.

Posting late. It was a tough morning. Mr. SD had to take a taxi to work because he left the headlights on and drained the car battery. On my way to work I realized I left my cell phone at home and it was too late to turn back. Once I sat down at work I proceeded to spill an entire cup of tea on my desk, which seeped into the adjoining wall, and dripped onto my shoes stored beneath.

TGIF! SOTD is Eau des Merveilles Bleue which is about as sporty as I get.

Post-shower I sprayed the insides of both arms with 2 different vintages of Shalimar (excellent for indoor sports.) Then a bit later I decided I wanted to smell the White Linen that was sitting out. I’ve worn this before but never got past the initial hairspray-ish opening. Getting it now – great summer scent, and definitely sporty. Would work for a game of badminton or sitting on the porch with a glass of iced tea.

Oddly enough, on the one arm that’s got both Shalimar and White Linen, I can smell each very distinctly without any blending together.

A long day today, perfume wise. Started the day in the 5th element, “Metal” by Essence of Chi.

    Top: coriander and cardamom;
    Mid: jasmine, casablanca lily and tuberose;
    Base: birch and resins.

Like the rest of the series, this one smelt cheap and diluted. Don’t know now what I saw in them last year.

In the afternoon, tried a small sample of Phaedon “Dzhari”.

Notes: dates, tonka, soil notes, Malaga wine, sandalwood, cedar and cashmeran.

Very nice mildly boozy semi-gourmand but it was gone in 2 hours. A small sample, on a hot steamy day, so I will re-test under better circumstances.

Next up was the weekly flight back to BHX, delayed by an hour. When I got home, it was as hot and muggy as Düsseldorf. SOTE is Profumi di Pantelleria “Maestrale”, which is lovely any time including in the heat.

    Top: bergamot, lavender and rhubarb;
    Mid: rum, carnation, iris, cardamom and coriander;
Base: cedar, vetiver and ambrette seed.

I wore Dzhari over a few days last summer and loved it in the heat. I want to get my hands on some more of it but it seems a bit difficult to get hold of here in the US. Did it recall L’air du Desert Morocain to you at all? That’s what it reminded me of, but I didn’t have it with me to compare.

So much for Chi. Unless you’re an alien, or a time lord. That would make sense. I wish Arso was an element

I’ll try them again in cooler weather, and if they fail again I’ll use them to wash windows or something. I’m afraid I’ve drained my Arso, Kanuka, so it’s all behind me now. ;^)

I don’t really have any sporty fragrances, so I chose Moschino I Love Love instead. It’s incredibly hot here in SoCal, so I wanted something light and citrusy!

Ooh, this is my favourite post. I don’t own many fragrances with ‘sport’ in the name, but I do love a citrus based scent, which screams sporty to me. I wore Chanel Allure Blanche today, and this evening I shall be wearing Eau des Merveilles Bleue. Still undecided about this one,(a large bottle may be coming up in the next swap meet) but in the very warm weather we have in the UK at the moment, it’ll do just fine.

Ooh, I love Bleue and ended up getting the 50 mLs and the 30 mLs (because cute). The 100 mL EdM bottles are way too big for my average-sized hands. Di give it more of anwearing!

I wil give it a go, I have to, it’s too big a bottle not to! It is lovely, but I find it so fleeting. Saying that, I can still smell it on my shirt this morning.

You must spray lavishly – at least 5 but like 28 La Pausa, 8 would do the trick. You can spray lavishly because big bottle and it is such a light fragrance you won’t clear a room.

    SOTD = Hermes Galop d’Hermes

If I had the presentation bottle, I can say I’m sporty on account of the stirrup bottle. Since I only have a partial refill bottle from hosting a split, my sporty affiliation is I thought about being sporty. Anyway, I enjoyed it all day as I had sprayed with abandon because I can!

Question for those who have worn Galop – did you detect tonka beans? I know it is not listed in Fragrantica but my nose knows what it likes!

Hmm, don’t recall any tonka. I did get a lot of rank fruit… must be the quince.

Rank fruit! I got the Tonka in the far dry down but it could be a figment of my overactive imagination.

You know what I just realized, it wasn’t tonka I smelled nor was it from Galop! It was from the vanilllin in my Carmex hand cream!

Hot and humid here, wearing Micallef Rouge No. 2 which somehow smells coconutty to me. Wish I were on a beach somewhere in cooler temps.

Very late today, but at least I’m not going straight from work to shower to bed like the past few weeks. I was planning to wear some of my only true “sport” fragrance, RL Polo Sport Woman, but I think the bottle is at Mom’s. Decided that White Linen is really a sport fragrance to me for some reason and went with that. Again. I’ve got to break my monogamy before it becomes monotony, but White Linen is such a no-brainer in the Texas summer heat.

I grew up in TX and loved wearing White Linen in the spring and summer! It’s so crisp and lovely.

No “sport” labeled scent in the house so Chanel Chance Eau Fraiche is my go-to when it’s a sporty sort of day. Must admit Luca Turin’s one star “depressingly banal” rating broke my heart a little. But that’s ok. My 19 year old daughter, surrounded by my fragrance obsession since birth and bored of it all, commented, “Whatever that perfume is, I like it,” when I recently spritzed Eau Fraiche in the car with her. Mind you, 99.9% of her responses since she could talk have been, “It smells like perfume. Like every other perfume you have,” (stab to the heart). So, her “I like it” was the equivalent of a Turin 5 star rating for Chanel Chance Eau Fraiche.
    : )

I have a 21 yr old daughter and can totally relate to the perfume responses. ???? She’s always been a monogamous perfume wearer, which absolutely kills me.

I’m sure the Eau Fraiche smells lovely on you. When I first got a copy of The Guide, I looked up the perfume I’d just bought, Lalique Le Parfum. One star, “Rock bottom.”

Aw, Lalique is lovely! I ♥️ so many of Turin’s 1-star wonders and am left scratching my head at some of his 5-star favs, like Lauder’ Beyond Paradise. Cloying and done before is how I view that one. To each, his or her own!

I had perfumes all picked out for the last two weeks, but first I had to reschedule an allergy shot, and thought Carthusia Ligea (La Sirena), one of my top ten of summer, might be a little much, and last week I just plain forgot to wear L de Lolita Lempicka Coral Flower, which I bought blind for the bottle (but fortunately like). As penance, I am in a headache-deepening dose of Pour Un Homme de Caron Sport. It’s not terrible, and I might even like it on someone else–it’s as much citrus as aquatic, which blends nicely with the lavender and vanilla–but I am seriously considering scrubbing it off. Happy weekend, everyone.
