Wednesday scent of the day 6/14

Posted by Robin on 14 June 2017 335 Comments

Paul Smith Limited Edition Football

Hump Day, already! Plus, Flag Day and World Blood Donor Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm wearing Paul Smith Story.

Reminder: 6/16 will be Oddball Friday...wear a fragrance that smells like nothing else you own, or interpret oddball in some other oddball way. Suggested by Austenfan.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the Paul Smith Limited Edition Football is from 2014 and is long since sold out. Football freestyler John Farnworth messes around with one here.

started the morning in Allure. I wore this one twenty years ago and had forgotten how lovely it is.

Testing- Incanta, Kimonanthe, Fire Island and Chai…Chai is winning.

Later will test Nuits Indiennes, Grand Soir, Anima Dulcis and Knot

I have decided to interpret oddball week as vigorous testing of very random samples as well as draining 1/4 full vials of samples.

I’m wearing ‘Sahara Noir’ by Tom Ford, which is my favourite fragrance of the last five years – some days it even feels like it’s my favourite of all time. Still can’t understand why this beautiful stunner has been discontinued but I luckily managed to get hold of a back-up bottle this week, so, as a way of celebrating that, I’m wearing it today.

Sahara noir only worked if I sprayed my clothing but not on my skin

I never had a chance to try it.
It sounds like something right up my alley!

So maybe its better for me its no longer available. Because i really dont need another incense-y fragrance (erhm no…that is a lie and we all know it ;)

Tom Ford certainly released some beauties that they’ve discontinued. I really loved the Black Orchid Voile de Fleur and Violet Blonde. I think sometimes he is smart for doing this, but it is frustrating if it’s something you love.

I know. It can be a bit (or insanely) frustrating. To me ‘Sahara Noir’ was an excellent replacement for ‘Amber Absolute’, of which I still have a bottle, but what has been the replacement for ‘Sahara Noir’? And to those who claim that the replacement has been ‘Tobacco Oud’ I can only say, “Nope, not good enough.”

I was planning to wear oddball fragrances all week but then the weather interrupted my plan

Right now, the temperature is just perfect. I could write a haiku about it. It has just rained, the sun it peeking through, and there is cool breeze coming through the windows. I have just made scones and serving them with strawberries that I have soaked in a bit of sugar and water overnight..the babies hair are blowing in the breeze.. eating their sticky breakfast. I want to hold this moment forever..

SOTD Songes. Perfect for this morning.

I did not pick up the cumin in Songes, though I do in Sables which I’m wearing today. I haven’t minded the cumin in things I’ve sniffed thus far, though I believe some people just hate it.

            Sables is pretty huh?
What I am probably smelling is not cumin but a combination of leather, dark florals & musk

        • chocolatemarzipan8 says:

I definitely got cumin the first time I tried Songes and inquired here as well. I don’t get cumin from Sables…mostly picking up the immortelle.

On a recent vacation trip to the West Coast of Canada, I was left in a Fluevog store without adult supervision.

Like Lovestosmellgood I am not oddballing due to the weather… in my case though it’s just because sticky heat makes me queasy and I want comfort and refreshment, not weirdness. Maybe I’ll get up the gusto on Friday. Meanwhile I am in grapefruity Dasein Summer.

Very hot weather is a dealbreaker for me too. There is so little wiggle room. My most favorite super hot and miserable weather fragrances are Cristalle (either version), Eau de Hadrien, Escale a Portofino, Cartier Baiser Vole edp, and Institute Tres Bien Cologne a la Francaise. The lighter, the better!

A day off and I went shopping in Amsterdam.
Summer sale has started and de discounts are in the 30-50% right now!

And of course I browsed all the perfume counters I stumbled upon.
I smell quite the oddball today in:

    – iris nazarena (wow, what a beauty!
    – Vetiver tonka (very nice!!! Reminds me a little bit of fat electrician),
    – iris ukiyoe (beautiful but so fleeting)
    – Bottega veneta pour homme parfum (this one wins when it comes to sillage and longevity, pretty good esp compared to lot of other designer frags these days)
    – Epice marin (makes me hungry, smells like something good is cooking haha)

I found a dress and a blouse. 40% off. Yay!

Btw I made a detour via Skins (niche perfume shop) especially for Heeley’s Sel Marin you folks recommended yesterday, but the tester was totally empty. Haha. I’ll just have to order a sample…

That may be my favorite candle. I have bought quite a few by now, I currently have one burning and as far as I can tell it has not changed at all. Just a nice nice smoky incense.

Thanks for the link. ‘Church incense’? Sounds good. JG perfume definitely has a lot of incense, but I would not call it a church incense. I guess the perfume, candle and room spray would compliment each other well.

Haven’t tried that one- it’s another Italian house with so many terrific or just interesting scents.
I’ve been packing things up also for a house decluttering and future move. Good luck! A small cabinet holds so much more to move than seems apparent when you are just living with it.

Story sounds interesting – I may need to try it.

SOTD is PdE Equistrius thanks to a spur-of-the-moment split with a couple of other NSTers. Equistrius is just lovely – a soft leathery iris with a little spice. Yummy.

Definitely leather. Not “bandaid” leather – more like handbag leather. And no chocolate on me. Isn’t it weird (and great) how fragrances give everyone a slightly different experience?

I am fully embracing summer today: Tom Ford Jasmin Rouge is just the right fragrance. This is one bottle that I’d splurge on if I had the money…. and no other jasmine fragrances! But it is in a dead tie with the Diptyque special edition jasmine as my most favorite jasmine ever. I feel lucky to have a small decant!

I used to have that but didn’t use it much, partly because it was so thick and hard to get out of the bottle.. I’m not sure I could ever figure out the smell either. It actually didn’t really smell like either of those things to me.

Yes Elisa P, I’m waiting for the day I crack the rigid plastic bottle.
Storing upside down, and vigorously shaking aren’t enough to use it.

I actually get out my very sharp knives and cut through rigid plastic containers, spoon out the lotions/creams and put them in empty plastic pots that hold things like body butters. OFten when the lotion is thick it does not want to come out and can’t be squeezed out if the plastic container is too rigid.

Hi, everyone. I’m now in San Francisco, and very relieved to be here. Yesterday became a nightmare for a few hours, and even with the redoubtable presence of the dear man, I found it slightly scary. For all sorts of horrible complications that I am not going to trouble you with, we missed our flight, were rebooked hours later, and got to our hotel near midnight–oh, just all sorts of things happened. It dawned on me yesterday that I’m instinctively worried by the police here because even when they want to help, I can’t help but notice that they’re wearing guns! Guns!! Anyway, we were both riding an adrenaline surge, so then we couldn’t sleep, and now we’re tired, but it’s Wednesday, and yesterday is over.

And what perfume cleanses bad memories? Well, many might, but I’ve chosen Acqua Viva, because I saw it mentioned yesterday, and I bought a small bottle of it at Fumerie. Oh, it’s lovely, and perfect for purpose: vivid, clean, a startlingly bright lemon that will probably need touching up many times, but will be entirely refreshing in the gathering warmth of the day.

It’s not at all fair to label Vanilla Flash an oddball, but I can’t help wondering whether it doesn’t lean slightly that way. I put it on last night (well, I needed to stop thinking, and I thought that vanilla might help). I got a not unpleasant but huge hit of cognac-soaked tobacco, with some rose, a touch of patchouli, and somewhere in the mix, a swift. swirl of vanilla. “Flash” is exactly the accurate name for the perfume: on my skin, the vanilla flashes past like a cheetah after a rabbit, but this morning, the sheets where my wrists rested smell of very good, very dark, boozy, pure vanilla, and how nice that is!

Off to find some breakfast, then unpack, the plunge into the city. Be well, all.

If you want a truly decadent breakfast, may I recommend Tartine at 18th and Guerrero? Their croissants (regular, chocolate, ham and cheese, and almond) are beyond to-die-for, and all the rest of their offerings are delicious too.

We have four days and no specific plans, so I could catch a train, but aren’t you supposed to be busy with a writing project ? I’d love to meet you for a cup of coffee somewhere, but I don’t want to contribute to a missed deadline!

I have an ancient still going bottle of Eau Dynamisante. I bought it in the late 90s when I wanted something just so French and not too costly. I love the glamor of that red bottle. I like the way it smells too – it was totally different than my orientals I normally wear. I am glad Clarins still makes it. Sometimes I drag out the old bottle and give it a go… or spray my husband. I found to my surprise a few years ago, that is smells very similar to AG Eau de Sud (original).

In Bvlgari Au de Vert. It is almost gone by now, so fleeting. I will be respraying during the day. The bottle is almost gone, so I think I will finish it today.
Last year my boss complimented my Profumum Acqua di Sale. I gave her a sample and a 10ml decant that she finished in 3 days. It was so strong that she was driving us crazy. Finally, this year for mother’s day she received a full bottle. And guess… she has been spraying or should I say bathing herself in it, since then. She told me this morning her bottle is almost gone. Being in a meeting with her closed doors has become a torture and people joke that it is easy to know where she is by following the traces of the perfume. She has already triggered migraines, dizziness, allergies in some people. I suggested her that 1 spray for me was more than enough since this it pretty strong, but I do not think she understood my message. In fact she does not have to. She is enjoying it and I am glad for her. What it is making me sad is that Acqua di Sale is one of my favorites perfumes for summer and she is not only killing my desire to wear it, but considering how much hated it is righ now, I am afraid that if I wear it, I can be condemned to death at any time :D But wait… she just asked me few weeks ago what perfume I was wearing, because it was pretty: Bottega Veneta Eau Legere… and now she is the proud owner of a full bottle…… I am looking for a new job now :D :D :D

One of our teachers popped over to the grocery store at lunch hour but as soon as she walked through the door she could smell Mrs. X’s perfume so she ran back out to her car and came back to school because she didn’t want to deal with her.

      Hahaha what a story!
Most Profumums are strong, bold and blunt (in a good way). If I recall correctly the concentration in most of the bottles is somewhat higher than in a normal edp/edt.
I have a bottle of Arso and I cannot imagine overspraying it. I think I would drown and suffocate in pine and resins myself :)

CM8, my favorite besides Aqua di Sale is Ninfea. I have the tendency to like fresh green fragrances and Ninfea smells like fresh cut grass, with roses and violets as the main notes. It is like being in a garden. Ambra Aurea is nice. I got lots of frankincense and the amber is very rich and sweet. I enjoyed the sample, but it never went to my fb shopping  list. Aquae Nobilis is very green: wormwood and and vetiver. I found it too strong and did not like it much. Dulcis in Fundo was all vanilla with an initial blast of lemon. Like lemon pudding. It did not appeal to me at all. I hope Ninfea might become a fb reality in the future, but with those prices…..

A coworker of my loved Omnia by Bvlgari, I use to wear that in the early 2000’s..so I bought her a bottle. Everyday..her hair..her clothes..her body..covered and bathed in Omnia.
I can’t stand the smell of it now..oh well. And I have moved on anyways..and I don’t work there anymore.

I agree. I’m not sure where else on the net you can get recommendations for good shoes, good books, good places to travel, good tea, good fragrance, and oh, a good laugh.

        Did I miss anything?

Oh geez. If she’s already bought 2 scents of yours, you might consider avoiding wearing any that you really couldn’t live with potentially coming to hate. Because that would seriously be a shame.

And you could also try wearing some low-sillage stuff for a while. She might not be inclined to steal those too…or if she does, at least they would be more difficult to overspray.????

I gave away a sample of Ylang 49 at a hair salon. This woman was so smitten with it, I just reached into my purse and handed it over. The fact that you can smell Ylang49 at a hair salon with all those other smells says a lot about the strength or maybe I over applied!

Sampling Mugler Hot Cologne for the first time. An oddball because I don’t have any other Colognes. Other than smelling like citrus, I can’t say much else about it, because it disappeared after thirty minutes. I might spray more lavishly next time.

After a perfume miss yesterday (Chant d’Aromes), I needed a tried and true favorite so I went with vintage Shalimar edc. This seems to have much less tonka and vanilla than the other iterations making it perfect for heat and humidity.

Keep sending out light, love and positive thoughts, beautiful NSTers. <3

I wore Shalimar extrait, last week even though it was HOT and I was going to work. Usually I only wear it as a bedtime scent. I was surprised how well it seemed to go with my stressful work day, and to transition between hot summer weather and cold a/c in my office. It is amazing how Shalimar smells good in all kinds of weather!

Sadly, this tells me we are not twins. Even though I love almost every other vintage Guerlain, I can’t stand Shalimar. I think I amp civet.

I was going to ask you how you feel about carnation. Because I’m obsessed with it. I have so many carnation fragrances! And if you don’t love vintage Bellodgia extrait, you most definitely are not my twin.

But it’s okay. I don’t have any sisters in real life (just a brother). So I can use as many scent sisters as I can find!

I’m not daunted! ;-) I’ve been a “Guerlie-Girl” since high school lo these many years ago, and I only came to love Shalimar a few years ago! Start with the edc, much milder on the skank.

My first bottle of L’Heure Bleue wasn’t until 2008 because I always loathed anise (or anything that smelled faintly like licorice) and now it’s one of my favorites!

I love carnation and think Bellodgia is gorgeous! Unfortunately, I can’t wear it because the clove in it is too caustic on my sensitive skin. I am able to wear Guerlain’s Voile d’Ete though with no problem. I think because the carnation and thus the clove is weaker.

Very interesting! I have heard that about Shalimar EdC before. Will give it a try sometime.

Haha, you love carnation! I like Voile d’Ete as well, but other carnation favorites include: SMN Garofano, Prada No. 2 Oeillet, Metallica/Metalys (which I only have decants of–prefer Metalys, I think), Malmaison (all gone), and DSH Fleuriste.

Have you explored the DSH line? I say that because Dawn uses only very small amounts of synthetics and everything I’ve tried from there, whether it is to my taste or not, never causes any of the dreaded synthetic overload or spiky undertones.

I’ve probably only tried 8 or 10 of the DSH line and that was years ago now. They all seemed to have the same base. I liked them okay, but not enough to purchase. I probably need to try some more. What do you recommend?

At Children’s Hospital w my son in the day hospital rerunning a test. Earlier in the spring he was dxed with adrenal insufficiency, which among many other life changes means his school has to have an RN onsite with him at all times. Anyway, I wanted the test rerun, just to double check. So feeling a little grim but there we are. In Cristalle, and reading NST . . . there are kids here so much sicker than my own. I’m in samples of Mark Buxton Sleeping with Ghosts on the left and ELDO You or Someone Like You on the right, both courtesy of thoughtful NSTers.
They both have oddball names, so that’s my participation angle. ????
Really liking the Buxton. It’s so well blended, it’s hard to pick out the notes. Fruity and floral, then vanilla/vetiver at the drydown.
The ELDO is spearminty and green at first, but it thankfully gets citrusy later on.

Have a good day, all. Stay safe.

I’ve been wearing a lot of “You” this summer, too! I too am thankful that the minty-ness calms down after a while. On me, many perfumes turn insipidly-sweet after the drydown, but this one actually dries into a woodsy rose for me after a few hours. Even though I wore something else today, I can still smell “You” on my watch wristband. Mmmmm.

I only put a little on but so far I wasn’t that keen on it ???? And I think it might be honey and/or beeswax which sometimes bothers me in perfume. I shall try it again.

I am liking Oriental Lounge. I felt like I couldn’t smell it at first then it all of a sudden bloomed on me. I have Jasmin de Nuit and I see some similarities. ????

And I meant to say above that I wasn’t initially a fan of Seville. I thought it smelled like grapes or grape juice. I liked it enough to keep trying it, and it grew on me a lot. But then, I LOVE honey and beeswax notes.

I’m glad you’re hitting it off with Oriental Lounge though.

Thanks for asking! The hunt continues. Recently I ordered a Neroli fragrance from an indie natural perfumer called Sarabecca. Tested it out at a local grocery store and it was a lovely neroli soliflore. Can’t wait til it gets here so I can spend more time with it!

(did anyone else have a parent who made them “save” new shoes, or whatever, for a proper time–a decision probably borne of common sense or thriftiness, but as a result you want to wear the new toys promptly?)

SOTD is S-Perfume “Musk S”. Oddball because: was sent as a substitution for a requested free sample, and it’s not familiar to me.

Notes: chestnut, floral notes, musk, vanilla and amber.

I can’t smell anything, so it turns out I’m as anosmic to modern designer musks as to any other sort. Yay me. :^)

I’m in the oddball Zoologist Bat today. Oddball week has been fun for me, and I’m glad it came around before the weather gets any warmer in Seattle. Most of the scents I consider oddball are better suited to cool or mild temps.

Also, yesterday I succumbed to the hype of possible Serge Lutens discontinuations and bought bottles of A La Nuit and Gris Clair. GC is a backup bottle and A La Nuit is the first time I’ll have a FB. I’ve only had decants and a partial bottle with less than 10ml from eBay up until this. Still pondering the need for a bottle of Arabie.

yes! to long sleeves for kitty wrangling. I feel your pain. Once I arrived at a vet office in tears, and the staff thought there was a pet emergency. I showed them the gash on my arm, and they took me into the exam room for a free antiseptic/ bandaging “treatment” before they attended to my cats. heh, fun times.

Thankfully, no bloody gashes on me this time! Just a few small punctures. The vet office I go to use this stuff called Feliway, which really does seem to take the wild, scared vibe down several notches with my cats. The cats are absolute sweeties once they get to the vet… it’s just the carrier that they hate.

Feliway! I’ve used it to get a half feral cat in a carrier. Not doing that again, though. #stresslevelsahoy

I’m always telling people who adopt kittens from the shelter to feed their kitten treats only in the carrier to try to get them to associate it with something that they like.

I worked in veterinary medicine for several years and we kept a pair of welder’s gloves on hand for difficult kitties at my clinic…now that I’m out of it, I wish I had a pair, but I usually have to fall back on just wearing my old leather jacket when bringing one of my cats in since she turns into a pit viper the second she comes out of the carrier!

That’s a bummer about Remarkable People though. :/ I’ve been meaning to try that one and my set of samples is older and came with Fils de Dieu instead.
