Tuesday scent of the day 6/13

Posted by Robin on 13 June 2017 304 Comments

Hermès Bleus d’Ailleurs Porcelain

Tuesday, folks, and William Butler Yeats' birthday. Things fall apart. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm wearing my own patented blend of Hermès Eau des Merveilles (2 sprays) and Eau Claire des Merveilles (1 spray), because SheriG reminded me of it yesterday. Tea at the moment, served from a much cheaper teapot than the Hermès beauty shown above, is Upton Irish Breakfast.

Reminder: 6/16 will be Oddball Friday...wear a fragrance that smells like nothing else you own, or interpret oddball in some other oddball way. Suggested by Austenfan.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the Hermès Bleus d’Ailleurs Porcelain teapot is $625, a teacup and saucer is $215.

SOTD is The Scent of Departure AMS (Amsterdam) – a curious combination of green and smoky notes. (For the oddball week).

Is it a *good* curious combination?

Oh yes, I like it (although it’s not popular, so maybe it’s just me). I may be biased, because I first got a sample to use it during my holiday in the Netherlands, so it brings back good memories. I seldom use it though – it’s good, but not good enough to buy a larger decant (I only have 5 ml).
To me, it mostly smells of green frankincense and something slightly soapy.

The shower was fabulous! I decorated with lots of fresh cut flowers, the south of france soaps, pictures of the mom to be..the food was great. I met a lot of very nice people, since it was mostly her friends. Thanks again for your help

I went to an Hermes counter for the first time the other day and their bottles (and home/bath accessories) display so beautifully together. It gave me a whole new appreciation for their packaging and aesthetics. Les Colognes are particularly stunning and a visual delight.

I almost grabbed it this morning, but went with Corsica Furiosa instead. I need to drain at least 5 samples, before I am ‘allowed’ to buy new ones….(self-imposed rule…haha they tend to get broken all the time).

Leaving in a couple of minutes. We will be attending a meeting uptown and then 1 hour inspection. I already stopped the coffee and water will be handy. I am always amazed at how construction workers handle the temperatures. Some of them when in the process of installing the steel in high floors carry small bags of salt and consume small amounts frequently since they cannot have bottles of water around. I have never tried that option, since in my case it is not necessary at all, but I will try one of these days and see if it really helps me. You too stay cool!

Aspara, I regret not using salt tablets when I hiked down into the Grand Canyon. I think they would have helped me avoid altitude sickness. I drank 4 liters on a 6 hour hike and was still wrecked at the end of it.

The hard hats are pretty light. Boots heavy. I hate wearing hats because it makes my head very hot. I guess it is my own problem, since everyone else does not experience that. The material they are made off is supposed to keep a regular temperature. I survived today ????, but it is hell outside!

This fascinates me. My dad used to make me take salt pills before my sporting events on hot days. I just thought he was nuts – I never knew that there was a reason to his salty madness!

Sold our house, continuing to work on moving. And what a boatload of work it is! I’ve already informed my dear husband that, among other things, a box of perfumes will accompany me on our final drive to the new destination in the northwest.

SOTD is Etat Libre d’Orange “Nombril Immense”. Oddball because: “huge bellybutton” is a perfume name now?

Notes are: patchouli, balm of Peru, vetiver, black pepper, opoponax, bergamot, carrot seed and ambrette. It’s very smooth and pleasant, but not great lasting power.

Wouldn’t you love to read the design brief for that one. The good news is I want you to make a perfume. The bad news is I want it to be based around a belly button…but the good news is it’s not just any belly button, it’s a big belly button and, to help with research, I’ve arranged for you to visit a sauna and turkish baths….

It’s a plum, tuberose, and vetiver scent. It smells kind of familiar, but I don’t remember the fragrance it resembles. We’ll see what happens in the drydown.

          hysterical!

SlV reads differently on me depending on the weather. I really love it! One of my favorite oddball fragrances.

Good morning, all. Portland is cool, nay, even cold, soI’m wearing Arbole Arbole. When Foxbins and I sniffed Arbole Arbole the other day, neither of us liked it much, but I’m playing with it today as an oddity. Why oddity? Because I don’t get much patchouli at all from this (apparently) patchouli-centric perfume. Nothing earthy, except sometimes I think I smell narcissus; nothing green, nothing dry. Instead, I get a softly rosey melange of spice and warm flowers. It’s not unpleasant, especially in the second hour, but on me, it’s nothing like the poem that inspired it. My experience is certainly closer to Lucas’s review than Angela’s. If you fancy this, try before you buy: I think skin chemistry is EVERYTHING with this one.

To San Francisco today on the last leg (sigh) of our holiday. The emails from work are piling up in my inbox now, but I am resolutely ignoring all meeting requests. I’m on leave for one more week, and this holiday I will have, right down to the very last drop.

    Be well, all.

When I log in to check on the Dak-cat, all the other emails are sitting in the screen, and I can’t help but see the subject line, but it’s worth it to know that Dakkie is doing OK. He’s destroyed two knitted mice, which sounds as though he’s bored and sulking, but he’s pretty well.

I can’t imagine the tales he’ll tell us when we get back…the dragons he killed (was it seven, Dakkie? Really? What a Brave Cat! Have five Temptations.); the burglars he foiled ( you saved my mother’s pearls? Have some more Temptations!). There’ll be the story of The Uppity Vacuum Cleaner, The Fearsome Fire Alarm, and so on. He won’t be quiet for days!

Sampling Zoologist Bat — not at all what I was expecting it to smell like (and definitely odd to my mind!). I tend to have issues with “mineral” notes and that’s mostly what I’m getting from this.

ETA: Ended up scrubbing this. It’s really interesting (smells like a cave!) and I can see it being loved, but it doesn’t hit my perfume buttons.

Do you find yourself being more or less willing to scrub something as you try more samples? Having found TWO loves recently, I’ve noticed myself being far more willing to scrub something that isn’t appealing after about 15 minutes.

Trying Pichola now, which I’m really liking. NV is apparently right in my strike zone.

Count me in the “15 minute scrub” group! Life’s too short to wear perfume that I don’t really love. Now granted, I may miss a few by scrubbing too quickly, but oh well…

I did finally drag my sorry enormous you know what to the gym…

But lemme just say it loud and proud, the Warriors are an Oakland team. They may be called the “Golden State” Warriors, but Oaklanders know the court battles have been OUR battles. There are Warriors streamers and flags everywhere. People are literally dancing in the streets. The Warriors may be abandoning us, but not today. Not today.

            To paraphrase Dorothy Parker:

            Oh, seek, my Warriors, your newer way;
I’ll not be left in sorrow.
So long as I have yesterday,
Go take your damned tomorrow (in San Francisco)!

            Today, we are all Warriors!

Very beautiful photo! I love those colors- so happy!

In a short week and half I will be back with my homies: my beloved Corsica Furiosa, PHI, MFK CPLS, Zelda, the inimitable Shalimar, and many, many more. I’ve missed them in a way I never anticipated. Absence does make the heart grow fonder.

I need to winnow my collection and keep only the “essentials” which will go a long way in making things more portable. I don’t want to leave anything behind again. Stay tuned as I will be listing bottles I’m giving away here on NST as they are culled.

A huge Thank You to those who helped assuage my loneliness by sending me samples, decants, and even a full bottle! You lovely people know who you are and I can’t really express my thanks enough. Sending you big virtual hugs!

Naja is on my mind. I’m dithering because the exact time it’s available for shipping, I will probably be on the road and the uncertainty of successful delivery into my hot little hands is questionable. I don’t want to risk it sitting on my porch in Florida in the sweltering heat or possibly being “misdirected” into other hands. A conundrum.

SOTD in the reminder of Naja from yesterday. The idea of showering and sending this beauty down the drain makes my heart hurt.

I have neighbors who are collecting my mail and forwarding it to me every couple of weeks, but in this day in age, people steal. I ordered a life vest for T-Rex that went missing after a confirmed UPS delivery. I may call LuckyScent and see if they can hold it until I get an address that coincides with my next contract.

Oh, well, on me, the melon was not really discernible. But keep in mind I’m very bad at picking out notes or being scientifically specific. It’s more about the “feel” for me. I still love Onda but I think Naja is more wearable, so I would get more use from it. When I smell Naja, melon doesn’t even pop into my mind.

scents of the morning = Eau des Merveilles + Eau Claire des Merveilles a la SheriG and Robin

Thanks to both of you for the inspiration. Eau Claire is a bit of an oddball for me as sometimes I can’t smell it at all. So far so good. Eau Claire adds a floral duskiness to EdM’s citrus mineral sparkle.

Things fall apart, the centre can not hold — a perfect sentiment for my mood of the past week. I am at loose ends as summer begins. So, I have set for myself the attainable and cheerful goal of learning to play “Pine Apple Rag” on the piano by August.

Here’s a fun musical rendition of that piece with a darling video story, If you have a moment or two please enjoy along with me as Olive Us shows how to visit a French bakery:

I’m in Shalimar edc today just because I was craving it. It’s not an oddball to me now, but Shalimar was definitely an oddball the first time I tried it. It was so unlike the most of the dept. store stuff I’d been wearing for a few years. I remember distinctly smelling my forearm over and over and over. I wasn’t sure if I even like, and before long it was true love ha! Now I tend to want to wear it at least once a week or I start missing it. :)

My Guerlain samples arrived yesterday. I was reeking havoc (in true Holly fashion) last night with Vol de Nuit on my right forearm, Chamade on the left, and Apres l’Ondee on my upper right arm. I am starting to think I am just a Guerlain person because I liked all three. Hard to pick which I liked better because they’re all different to me.

I also received a Commodity Cocktail Kit from the freebie meet (it was a fun trip to the mailbox yesterday!) and look forward to layering those and also trying them on their own.

I set my combination locks to part of a number that I have to remember for other reasons, such as a phone number.

You couldn’t do this with online passwords, because hackers might know and try any numbers associated with you, but I assume gym thieves don’t even know whose locker they are trying.

I have towel service at my gym and full showers with towels/hairdryers at my work campus, so this makes getting cleaned up a lot easier- I don’t have to lug a ton of stuff with me- just sneakers and workout clothes. I keep small samples of leave in conditioner, shower comb and skin oil, along with perfume, in my work bag. I have a full thing of makeup at work (courtesy Hajusuuri) so I can make up my face at work. It;s just getting to the gym- ah, there is the rub!

Chanel Boy today. I don’t know if anyone has already mentioned this but the Jo Malone website has a “just because” promotion going on. A digital game where you can win full size colognes/body products/candles. If you win, it automatically adds the item to your shopping cart and you just have to purchase one other item. Doesn’t matter what it is, there is no minimum purchase. I won a 100 ml bottle of cologne, a candle, body creme, a 100 ml cologne intense. I just made small purchases in order to win the products, it’s a pretty great deal.

yes, I think everything on the more expensive end might be gone, I’m assuming all of that went first. :( I won orris & sandalwood. and the other 100 ml cologne I won was basil & neroli. HdP 1826 (Eugenie de Montijo) today. It’s apparently supposed to be inspired by her love of patchouli, but I don’t really smell patchouli in it at all, just a kind of fuzzy citrus-vanilla-incense.

Oh, I love that one. Just got a travel size during the last Sephora sale. I love that spicy citrusy thing!

I didn’t *plan* on an oddball, but randomly pulled out Caron’s French Cancan parfum while surfing The Sample Sea today and got
straight-up Play-Doh. A few years ago while sampling Rose Jam perfume, I kept thinking hmm, I don’t get it! All I smell is Play Doh! I had been sniffing the wrong arm which was commando. ;) Apparently my own skin scent is similar to Play-Doh, and I wonder what on earth that is? I get a hint of it in Misia, too.

I just went and huffed my unscented Dr. Bronner’s liquid baby soap to make sure and nope! no Play-Doh. I think we all have a skin scent that we’re so used to that it doesn’t register, and I just happened to have paid zealous attention to mine that particular day.

I’m wearing eight sprays of Roberto Cavalli Oro. Waterdragon was captivated by the sight of it, sitting in the front of my perfume cabinet because the oddball bottle is too tall to fit on the shelf where it belongs. She seemed to like the scent, too, and I may see if I can track one down for her. My bottle is a tester that I got for about twenty bucks three or four years ago. It’s still cold here and Oro is wonderfully warming.

Wearing Sel de Vetiver and it is glorious in the heat.

Today is “supposed” to be the last day of the heat wave where I am at. I felt a little sorry for the two guys who were cleaning my dryer vent this afternoon. I hope they had plenty of water in their work truck!

SOTD = Hermes Eau des Merveilles Bleue, from the sample stash and a generous NSTer. Color me surprised… I like it! I usually can’t go anywhere near an aquatic scent, it’s a bad matchup for me. EdM Bleue is a bit of mineral, some basil, and a hint of sunscreen. Perfect for sizzling hot weather, IMO. It’s an oddball in a couple of ways.

It is worth a try if you see it. It also helped to ignore what I had previously heard about it, and judge it on its own merits, rather than as a flanker. Good luck!

Isn’t that funny…I got a distinct note of oregano from Bleue. I sent my samples off for the freebiemeet, so I’ll try it again sometime and look for basil. I did get the mineral note, though.

Interesting. Maybe we are smelling the same note, and interpreting it differently? BTW, a final caveat to lillyjo… EdM Bleue did get cleaner-smelling in the far drydown on me. It isn’t quite at the laundry detergent level of clean, though. If that is one of your no-gos, be advised.

Just got home after a rough trip (family drama) – the drama isn’t over, but at least I have all my lovelies to make me smell great. I am in a happy cloud of Oliver Peoples thanks to the very generous ScentSpirit, and I just want to say thanks to everyone who did anything to make someone else’s day slightly better today. (Since I’ve seen too much of the opposite lately! Grrr.).

Family drama is the worst, and every family has it. If you need more Oliver Peoples to drown out the noise, let me know. I haven’t sent you Salome yet because I ordered a (big) bottle of Shaal Nuur and when it comes I will include that too.

Oddball on the left hand-Tubereuse Criminelle. Nice once the wintergreen wears off. On the right hand, Dries van Noten. Probably won’t be able to wear any other ones this week due to low tolerance from the men in my life and zero tolerance at work.

SOTD = perfume mutt featuring Nicolai Amber Oud and Al-Rehab Choco Musk

holyneroli asked for a barbershop smelling summer perfume recommendation and I immediately thought of Amber Oud. To temper the lavender, I wore several swipes of Choco Musk, resulting in a musky, ambery, tonka bean and vanilla

Smelling AG Nuit Etoilee in the wild! How neat!

For those still reading, I am planning to split Naja $30 for 5 mLs shipped, U.S. only. I will be ordering soon because limited and will mail out in September (after my July vacay and once the worst of the summer heat is behind us). I won’t ask for money until I am ready to ship and you can drop out. I have six 5 mL split portions available. The first 4 splitees get their choice of a LuckyScent sample (no guarantees since those are frwwbies and subject to availability). Email me if interested.

Did you get to play the Jo Malone game yesterday? In the afternoon, the 100ml Basil/neroli was pretty easy to get. It was the only white label scent I saw offered. I’m sure there will be quite a few available at a “discount” on eBay in the near future. ????

To my nose it’s a soliflore, really not fruity. But YMMV.

No oddball fragrance tonight as today at work was enough oddball for me. Super busy day and glad it’s over so I needed something great.

SOTE is Dior Diorissimo from my recent vintage purchase. It doesn’t last terribly long but it sure is fantastic. Might have to try layering it over some lotion or oil next time.

Lovely–Diorissimo is so pretty. What’s the color of the juice like? I’ll spray anything not Serge-Lutens-colored on my clothes to make it last longer. You could always do it in your hair too.

Oh, spraying in the hair, good tip!! Thank you.

The color is pretty dark, so it may leave marks on lighter clothes but I do wear alot of darker things. I received a 3.3 oz bottle so I could/should spray lavishly.

You are right, it is such a pretty fragrance.

I’ve been skipping around and commenting, but never logged in my SOTD…
Started out in Jasmine et Cigarette in my best attempt at an oddball scent. This isn’t for me, the smoke is too much, and it gets smokier during the wear.
Due to the kindness of Apsara, I tried Wazamba today. Now, this is for me! It will be great in the cooler weather, but it’s very much dry enough to wear in the heat.
Added Prada Infusion d’Vetiver toward the end of the day. These three are a bit odd to be wearing in one day, so there you have it. ????
