Monday scent of the day 11/2

Posted by Robin on 2 November 2015 210 Comments

Rörstrand Mon Ami tea cup

Monday rolls around again...what fragrance are you wearing?

I'm lagging this morning. I'm on my third cup of tea and haven't even chosen a fragrance yet. I'm going to pick something from what ya'll are wearing.

Reminder: this Friday, 11/6, will be Enabler Pin Friday: bestow a pin on someone who convinced you that you just had to try (or buy) a fragrance. And of course, wear the fragrance!

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the Rörstrand Mon Ami tea cup is $26 at Didriks.

I’m sampling Mojito Chypre which I’m guessing is not something you have around so I won’t be your inspiration today

I’m on my second pot of tea, and wearing Fleur des Comores by MPG. It’s such beautiful weather in the Netherlands that it made me crave a summery scent. FdC is just that.

It’s usually dreary here as well, but not this year. I’m enjoying it while it lasts; it will not be for long.

Was just looking ahead. Maybe the day after Thanksgiving we could have “wear a perfume you’re grateful for” and New Year’s Day is on a Friday so we could do a best of 2015 day

I am sampling Bois des Isles, I applied my sample liberally (about 1/3 of the sample) and it is lovely but still rather faint. I need to acquire a sample of the extrait, I guess! Our workgroup has had two deaths in the immediate families over the weekend. Very sobering. Gotta be making the best possible use of one’s time at all times….

It’s not quite cold enough here for Alahine but I’m sure I’ll be joining you soon. Alahine is So Not Me, but I love it tons. (Guess it’s becoming a Me fragrance, though. After four years of loving it, I really shouldn’t say it isn’t me.)

All that oriental stuff in the base. I really struggle with orientals in general – Alahine works for me because of the beautiful florals, but it is always teetering on the edge of success.

Yes, interesting is a good word for it. I appreciate it for being unique, but it doesn’t really suit me. I don’t see myself reaching for it more than a few times each year. (Which is okay. There are plenty of bottles in my collection that fall into that category.)

I’m sampling Iris Cendre again today and waiting for the appliance guy to determine the fate of Mom’s good old washing machine. It’s about my age, which means it’s well-made and uncomplicated so I hope the distressing noises and smoke just mean a belt has met an untimely end. Of course, we have a house full of guests so I’m expecting the worst.
Anyway, perfume, I smell quite unlike my usual self. I’m not usually an iris fan, but Iris Cendre is different enough from the others I’ve sampled that I really like it. I think it’s the violet (?) that fixes it for me. I like Angelique and the SHL iris, but don’t really wear them. Of course, I love Heure Exquise but see it as a complete fragrance rather than by notes.

      Update!

In case you’re curious here is how I applied:
dabbed Elephant on chest, wrists, neck
1 spray Shalimar edt on chest approx. 6 inches away

Shalimar and Elephant are playing well together. I got worried 20 minutes in when Elephant stomped Shalimar out, but Shalimar came back at the 30 minute mark.

4 hours in – safely in the dry down for both, and they are playing very nicely together. I feel like I am registering Elephant a little more, but Shalimar is very apparent. Super spicy and oriental, and just as cozy as I’d hoped.

Oakland, it was really easy. Add to blender 2 overripe bananas, some milk (according to taste), some chocolate syrup (also according to taste.) Blend. Pour into 2 glasses. Add shot of espresso to the adult’s glass. That last step is KEY!

It’s sunny and warm in Brussels, too, and it’s a bank holiday here. So I’m in a lovely cafe next to Grand Sablon, drinking warm milk with honey, caramel, cinnamon and whipped cream. My guess is it contains about 1000 calories, but it’s delicious.

SOTD is Mimosa & Cardamom, because I bought a bunch of mimosa branches from the market yesterday. It works very well with the weather and my casual mood.

Butting in here: big Volutes EdT fan, found the EdP to be more rich in dried fruits than I enjoy. Daim Blonde and Bottega Veneta do not work on me for similar reasons.
My final FB purchase of the year will be the EdT, since I am hearing discontinuation rumors. (EdP remains in production, so I’ve heard).
        Anyone heard otherwise?

I like both and have a travel size of the EDT. I just find the EDP warmer and richer (and like the stewed fruit quality!). Just couldn’t justify owning full bottles of both of them. It will be a shame, though, if the EDT is discontinued.

No perfume yet. Headache. Coffee. Mr. Espresso’s Organic Seven Bridges Blend. And the sky is falling. We have real rain. The kind you hear all night tapping on the roof and windows, and rushing down gullies. The kitties have despaired of going outside. Good medicine for us in northern California! When my beloved Maxalt does its magic, I’ll pick a scent to match the rain.

It must be really exciting to live in a climate where rain is something that you notice! When I talk to my sister in South Australia, she often reports on rainfall because it’s such a big thing for the land. When she says they had 3 millimetres of rain over a couple of days, I try to enter her happiness, but in truth, if I were at her house, I doubt that I would even register that rain had fallen. Your post has made me think harder about being more present in the everyday, Oakland.

Truthfully, it has just been miserable watching whole communities go without piped in water, and land sinking because the water tables have gone so low… where I live it is still quite verdant–so near the sea. But inland, the state is really suffering. We have nine old growth oak trees on our property, and my heart has been in my mouth about how many more dry years they can survive. For the first time in thousands of years, the massive sequoias in California are dying for lack of water. I was at the treeline over the summer and saw the behemoths that had turned brown and brittle. It was awful. Rain is balm!

oh, that breaks my heart to think those trees have stood the test of time for so long and now may not make it. Wishing the entire western area a warm, slow and stready, but not overwhelming rain! Sometimes I feel such incredible despair over the state of world. Now, I must go sniff Box of Eels to cheer ans soothe myself!

The rough with the good. Well, we need it 🙂

Many years ago, I had a comic that I tacked onto my mirror. It was of two people stuck on a roof of a house in flood. Passing by was a man in a tub, wearing sunglasses and enjoying his ride. One on the roof says to the other, “Some people have all the luck!”

Very good morning to all. It’s not even five o’clock here, but I’m so awake that I thought I’d start my day, so here I am at the computer, writing feedback on a student’s thesis and trying not to be cross about the over-complicated sentences and convoluted thinking. Am largely failing at not being cross, but good tea and a judicious spray of Coromandel are doing what they can to calm my befrazzlement. How I love this perfume, easily my absolute favourite of all the Exclusifs, except for my other five absolute favourites! Coromandel is complicated, like a maze, and when I finally reach the heart, in the far dry-down, after twists and turns and seemingly unpromising dead-ends, I feel rewarded both by and for the journey.

He brought all the marked term papers to class in a plastic grocery, proceeded to pass them back to us, and when I got mine I was overwhelmed with the stench of stale cigarette smoke! Do you know if Crabtree is still selling their sandalwood frag? I have BDI extrait, which I love, but unless I really put on alot, it fades pretty fast on me. I was thinking of buying the BDI Les Exclusifs to layer them both for increased longevity. I was also wondering if Champagne de Bois would work?

They sell something called “Indian Sandalwood” in a red box now. It comes in a cologne concentration instead of an edt. I haven’t smelled it, mine is the box with the green trees and the elephant on it.

I have layered BdI parfum and BdI edt and I can’t say that the addition of the edt does much for the parfum longevity. I think Champagne de Bois would be a great experiment, I might try that soon since I have both.

It seems they’ve added other scents to the sandalwood and are passing it off as better, in some way, than the original. For me, it cannot be an improvement but a loss, and I feel sad.

Thank you both. I smelled C& E sandalwood body lotion recently. I remember thinking that it didn’t smell anything like the sandalwood scent that I remembered. I was wondering if that was because it was lotion but I guess not. I remember back in the day that they had the most gorgeous sandalwood scent but I was young and inexperienced. Also, it was marketed to men so I figured it would be too masculine.

Hey, guess what? We have tui in the very centre of the city! They’re madly ornithoptering around in the shrubs in our little park, making loud comments to one another about how the nectar was much better when they were fledglings. Yesterday I stopped to listen to them and a kid who was walking along texting (I suppose he was texting) knocked into me so hard I fell down the hill. Bother! But still — tui! Totally worth a tumble!

Yes, biggish birds, nectar eaters (drinkers?). They have voices that sound as though they smoke 3 packets of high tar cigarettes a day then gargle with neat Scotch, but yet they are still musical, and their little outfits are the last word in restrained elegance. They wear deep black-blue satin, with just a touch of dark, dark iridescent green, and the severity is relieved by a little snarl of white at the throat. Just too lovely! I was accustomed to them in I lived up home, but it’s very special to find them in the city.

Ohhhhh. So sorry for everything that is conspiring against you. Keep spritzing and hanging out with your perfumista pals.

Good luck with your week – sounds awful. Thank goodness we have a public health system.

I tried the perfume sweat test this morning…Beyond Paradise and Byredo Oliver Peoples. The test went a bit pear shaped as I was in heavy mist and rain with two dogs that got fixated on digging out a rabbit hole…so…Oliver Peoples is the better vs. sweat. Wondering what Bronze Goddess would be like?
BUT I need a perfume that works to cancel out the fug of two wet dogs…I’m thinking that Shalimar/Elephant combo with a massive burst of Samsara and Fracas and a scented candle

If you’re going to go with Fracas you might as well add Alien into the mix as well. ;D I’d second the Shalimar/Elephant combo. Good luck!

“Wet dog” is a tough scent to put in its place. It tends not to mind its own business and get up in everyone’s grill. I don’t mind it myself but the l’Elephant combo would probably put the dog smell in a polite and well behaved sit-stay position. 😉

Sorry to hear about your troubles! Sounds like you might need a second hit of BFMV, a LARGE glass of wine, and a good book/movie. Best wishes.

Musc Ravageur today. Have been waiting for the weather to cool off in SF to start wearing it.

Still recovering from head cold, not ready for perfumes but enjoyed my handmade oakmoss soap and some rose jam shower gel (which is almost too much for my sensitized head, sadly). I miss my
Raining cats and dogs, and of course I didn’t wear raincoat. Bah!

Handmade oakmoss soap sounds wonderful! A few years ago I was making my own soap with EOs from a goat milk base and really enjoyed it. I’ll have to do it again. I’d love some vetiver soap too.

I still haven’t figured out vetiver, of I like it or not. Took me a bit to get oakmoss, and now I love it.
Found the soap at a flea market in St. Augustine, FL. The woman who makes the soaps has an etsy shop, I’ll have to dig through my papers and find her business card and post the link!

I’m pretty swamped at work right now and could not sleep last night, brain feverishly reviewing all the work I need to do. Fell asleep at 6am, of course, and woke up miserable one hour later to a grim, grey morning. Sprayed on considerable amounts of Tea for Two, even though I am usually a moderate spritzer on work days, because I genuinely needed its wholesome smokey tea-and-stewed fruits embrace. Whenever I caught a whiff of it as I blearily trudged through my day it soothed and comforted me. Magic!

I missed Halloween friday due to work, even though I had especially prepared for it, so I’ll just tell you now! We don’t celebrate halloween here, but as a kid I was very into dressing up, so any old excuse was good enough. My favourite costume was “hippie”, consisting of my mother’s genuine, fairly outrageous 70s togs, a headband, no shoes, and lots of flowers. In the spirit of this outfit I wore Etro Patchouly, which seems surprisingly wan and short-lived these days. Boo! Should’ve gone Profvmvm, or Reminiscense.

I so sympathise with the work situation, I hope it gets better soon and that Tea for Two is helping you to survive the day.

Yes. At least I do it, in addition to perfume. And pay attention to my skincare and make-up, I have some big guns I bring out when needed.

Same here – very swamped at work. Still meaning to try Tea for Two, hopefully I’ll be able to fit it in soon.

Another good hippy perfume is Lush Karma.

I’ve only tried the karma soap and its got a powerful fragrance, enough to scent the whole flat, even when still wrapped. Is the perfume similarly atomic? I’m always hunting for hippie perfumes, they’re cozy!

TFT is delicious!! A lot of people seem to get tons of smoke from it but to me it’s just a whiff in the top notes, just enough to bring to mind lapsang souchong. Yum. Good luck with work!

SOTD is a tiny little dab of SL La Fille de Berlin at the base of my throat and then copious sprays of Guerlain Vetiver on my wrists. I am inspired because of our lovely warm weather. Nothing smells better than roses and vetiver. I wish I could take the whole week off and do yard work around my house. I’ll take the good weather when I get it!

Before my day turned against me, I sprayed myself lavishly with Remembrance’s Patchouli perfume and felt ready for anything. But first my new cleaning lady failed to show up or even call and then my doctor’s office didn’t phone in the order for my blood work and then my poor son texted me from urgent care with a kidney stone. And it’s a perfect fall day (weatherwise). I’m going for more patchouli.
