Friday scent of the day 6/2

Posted by Robin on 2 June 2017 315 Comments

Hey, it's Antoine Friday! Our community project for today: wear a fragrance by perfumer Antoine Lie or Antoine Maisondieu, if you have one.

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

Me: double points, for Etat Libre d'Orange Rossy de Palma Eau de Protection (and I ought to get extra credit given how long it took me to find my sample), by both Antoines.

Reminder: 6/9 will be Fruity Friday! (A repeat from 2014.) Wear something fruity. Doesn't have to be a fruity floral, just something with plenty of fruit.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

ooh, that is a tough question to answer as rose is so dominant in so many fragrances…I do like Jo Malone Velvet Rose & Oud, Dame Perfumery’s Cassis, Rose & Sandalwood as well as his soliflore Rose de Mai, Keiko Mecheri Attar de Roses, Chloe (the one released in the early or mid 2000s..it is a clean and fresh rose to my nose), Pacifica’s Egyptian Bergamot Rose (sadly discontinued…gosh how I loved that inexpensive beauty!) and Eden Botanicals Egyptian Rose Essential oil (they have a very large variety of rose essential oils which I would highly recommend exploring if you are interested in that note in particular…they might even have a rose sampler pack)…also, Sonoma Scent Studio does great stuff with roses…and I recently tried Serge Lutens Sa Mageste a La Rose (sorry if I am butchering the name) which was also quite lovely….

sorry for the very long response!!!

No Antoines in my collection. Has anyone tried the newish Louis Vuitton’s? I received a package in the mail from my favourite Saks SA yesterday, containing 6 LV samples (Rose des Vents, Dans La Peau, Contre Moi, Apogee, Mille Feux and Turbulences) as well as 6 by Killians (Intoxicated, Vodka on the Rocks, Black Phantom, Good Girl Gone Bad, Straight to Heaven). I tried Dans la Peau last night and found it pretty awful but sprayed Turbulences this morning and it’s not too bad. Even if I don’t really like any of them, it’s always fun to receive an unexpected perfume package in the mail.

I need to try that Eau de Protection, just haven’t gotten around to it yet. I do have Rhythm, but I couldn’t face the lavender.
So today, on this long awaited Friday (anyone else have the experience that this was a realllllly long week?) I am wearing a base of Tauer’s Carillon pour un Ange, with a generous overspray of Dame’s Lily of the Valley Soliflore, to sweeten it up a bit, as Carillon reads like Lily of the Valley leaves, with very little Lily of the Valley flowers on my skin. 🙂 The Dame Lily of the Valley is pretty, but light, and the two of them do a good job of completing each other, as the Dame hovers over the base, and is not subsumed by it.
I smell leafy and flowery, with no sneezing, something I like in a green perfume…

Yes. Very long week. I am sorry Meredifay that I don’t remember– do you have kids? For me the last weeks of school always seem very long as I usually don’t have tight writing deadlines, so have more time to obsess on my kids’ final exams and panic that I haven’t really planned anything for the summer, and school is almost, but not quite yet, out… Also this week there were many distressing stories in the news. Wears ya out.

No children, but I work at a university teaching hospital, so we are driven by the school year schedule. Adorable hubby is 3 weeks from finishing up his Masters degree, a long delayed and yearned for goal, with attendant drama and angst. And yeah the national scene is an often uneasant spectacle lately. Thaks for highlighting that. It helps to take a step back!

S(s)OTD-(on two arms front and back)
Brigitte (the best Tocca out there IMHO)
Britt Gold (why oh why did they not keep this and Britt Red in the lineup???)
Stephen Jones (just got it last night)
    Rossy (scent twins, Robin!)

also, wafting in Nicolai L’Eau a la P….(middle aged brain fart cause I can’t remember the last part of the name but this is fantastic…remind me of Gucci Rush…will be getting a lot of skin time in the summer!) Sprayed it on my shirt!

on my neck- Soiholve Honeysuckle Bird…from the bottle I thought I smelled cumin but on skin not at all…wonder if it is the linden? I think this is an all natural and it is so beautiful….anyone looking for a honeysuckle perfume that is sweet I recommend it….I think there is strawberry as a note so I will revisit this one next week for fruit week.

Top of hands Eau de Missions for the first time (another great summer cologne!)

The perfume gods must like me because I received an impromptu surprise package last night from my best friend (who is also a perfumista) and I was playing with my new toys last night (and obviously today as well!!)….last night tested SL Un Bois Vanille, original Prescriptives Calyx (haven’t smelled that in YEARS!!!!!) and Boucheron Trouble.

    happy Friday y’all!
    keep calm and reek on!

It really is a fun one! Does it remind you a bit of Gucci Rush? This was a massive surprise as I had never heard of it and she sent me a full bottle…it really is fun when something unexpected turns out to be so wonderful….I am home in my bathrobe right now and I can smell it on that cause I sprayed it on there last night…..

I agree…it is a nice line and the bottles are stunning…I drained a mini of Florence several years ago and a good friend wears Guillietta as her signature scent…Stella is fantastic and there is also another one that KellyC says is a dupe for Gypsy Water…all in all I would say it is a decent line and the prices are good plus they have numerous ancillary products (shower gels, candles, travel sprays, hand creams , etc)

If you don’t mind…Is the gardenia or jasmine very strong in BFMV? They are listed as notes, and both can really explode on my skin.

Happy Friday! I am not participating in the project this week- the only perfume I have that qualified is Jasmin et Cigarette, and I’m going to a graduation so wanted to wear something a little more “proper”. So I am wearing Beige and smelling divine.

This is my last day of work until August – I’m usually really stoked about summer vacation, but I’m feeling kind of blue because I’m really going to miss the students I was lucky enough to work with this year. Oh well, a few long mornings of drinking coffee with the cat on my lap will cure me. One thing I love about summer vacation is the chance to wear several perfumes in one day!

I’m sampling Burberry Brit Rhythm For Her today. A sweet, soft, powdery kind of lavender. I wish it were juicier, less dry. But it’s still nice. Robin compared it to Baiser Vole and Prada Infuison d’Iris, and I can see why (the same “soft veil” feel), but both Cartier and Prada have green and citrus notes I miss in Burberry. I still like it, but I think I need to try it again in cold weather.

That happens regularly with my and my husband’s debit cards. They shut down the card with no forewarning, then it takes about 10 days to get the replacement in the mail. It’s a real PITA, but incurring a bunch of fraudulent charges would be worse.

I missed the boat today, but I’m standing on the shore smelling good in my Chanel Cristalle edp. It is one of those perfect late spring days that have been rare for us this year, and Cristalle is just right. (As per Rossy de Palma – now I am wanting to watch Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, which if course, would be me at work this week! 😉 )

I tried Cristalle a year ago, and I did not like the way it smelled on me. Fastforward to last week. I picked up my friend for lunch, and when she got in the car, she smelled so good. I asked her what she was wearing, and it was Cristalle. I wish it worked for me, but love to smell it on others.

      You smell great!

Thank you! For a very long time when I was younger I did not like Cristalle – or any other greens or mosses for that matter. But a few years ago it just clicked. It smells like summertime to me. There is a big difference between the edt and edp for sure as chocolate mentions below. I’ve never smelled vintage of either so I can’t comment.

Vintage was less “fresh and light” as current…as it had a hefty dose of oakmoss…if you get vintage now it won’t smell the same as current formulation or even what pristine vintage smelled like when I wore it in the late 1970s because it had a lot of citrus top notes which don’t hold up with age…however, the drydown of the vintage is gorgeous and just what it was from so many years ago. If you can get your hands on some do give it a try.

I’ve always loved all things green and citrus so it seemed like Cristalle would be a natural lovematch with me. But it took me a couple of years of trying it here and there to fall for it. I’d agree that the edt and edp are quite different, though I’ve actually only tried the current edt and vintage (not sure from what era) edp. The edp I love and I have been hunting for a good price on a bottle. It’ll be my next FB purchase.

Will also add that I fell hard for the Eau Verte last summer, so maybe that was a gateway? Though I’ve always felt Eau Verte had more in common with No 19 Poudre than with Cristalle.

I agree, the Eau Verte has a very similar vibe to No 19 Poudre then the original Cristalle.

I adored the original Cristalle edt (vintage), wore it frequently in HS, along with Eau de Patou. I was a huge oakmoss/citrus lover back in the day!

I wore California Rêverie last night as I was craving oranges (I’ve never gotten any jasmine from it – it just smells like a CA orange grove to me) and *just* pulled a MM Flying sample from a stash on my dresser. Is Flying an Antoine? Or were you just comparing citruses?

Mine is musk-poor as well, and decants of musks never make it into my cart because I always think they’re going to be boring or something? IDK what my hang-up is. The 2 I do have – Mona di Orio and Musc Ravageur – kinda make me swoon so it’s clearly a note I need to play with more.

Yeah, maybe that’s my thinking too or that they’ll just smell like laundry musk or hippies. Actually I do have a couple(SL Clair de Musc decant which smells like LV TdN to me and Kuumba Made Egyptian Musk) and then others that I don’t think of as musk perfumes but are really musk dominant-L’Air de Rien, Habanita L’Esprit, Teint de Neige. Funny, I don’t think of Musc Ravageur as a musk, but an ambery/vanilla oriental.

Sampling CdG/PW Girl for Team Antoine Lie

I like Girl better today than the last time I tried it which was also for a Friday community project. Girl is nicely woody, and I like lavender, so there’s that. Plus it’s in a funky bottle, and it’s at the discounters, and it’s Friday, and and and . . .

I only grabbed the little 10 mL sprayer when it was at Sephora. Now I’m wishing I had grabbed the big bottle. It’s a strong fragrance, so I need only a bit…but dies down pretty quickly and then I want to spray again. how would you rate the sillage and longevity?

I spritzed twice from a sample. Girl gave me moderate projection and very good lasting power. Strong enough that I was tired of Girl by this afternoon and spritzed 4711 all over the top of it.

There is something in many woody scents that can lasts forever. Orange Sanguine is a fleeting citrus for some noses, but the sandalwood-ish dry down hangs around until the next day for me.

I love that each of us seems to highlight a different note in it. I wonder why that is–from skin chemistry to differences in perception to different environments?

Dior Homme is easy to find at the shopping mall, I hope you can give it a go sometime. It is smoother than Girl, definitely less pepper. 🙂

Wish I could find my 3ml sample of Stephen Jones, that is some seriously good weird stuff. But I suspect I’ll be in Moschino Funny! today, as soon as I drag it out of the cabinet (it’s a summer staple for me and I haven’t switched spring frags for summer yet).

I think it must be. CdG has it listed on their site, but when you go to the online purchase it says the page no longer exists.

You can still get it at the discounters and Amazon, but I guess it was a short lived production.

Bummer! I’m the kiss of death to so many products–from fabric softener to shampoo to fragrance, if I dig it, it’s not a huge seller. If you see me in the store, opening bottles to sniff things, don’t be shocked. I wonder how many here do that ????

Odonata9, when the SF fog gets too much, I love to spritz this quite liberally (one of the few I actually spray more than three spritzes). Sunshine in a bottle as far as I’m concerned. It never overwhelms but has excellent staying power.

It is quite good…not sure when this decant is from…a comment on Fragrantica says the bottle and formula appears to have changed this year maybe…I really should stop reading Fragrantica. 😉

I haven’t noticed a bottle change(I was recently at Osswald and they looked the same) and have no idea about formula change, but I do know that the bust is a pricey add on-you can buy a busty bottle for more or bustless bottle for less(than more). Hope that all makes sense 😉

I received it via email, not snailmail, on 5/10. I received a reminder email on 5/30, and it expires on 6/9.
I got a 10% code after the fall sale, too…I had forgotten about that.
The verbage on the 5/10 email was that it was a “rouge thank you”, for what it’s worth. I think it was a one off.

I’m participating in the Friday project with several dabs of different scents. I have Tom of Finland on my right hand and Rossy de Parma on my left forearm. My right forearm has the remnants of CdG Daphne from an emptied-out sample tube. I didn’t remember the Daphne being so beautiful! The other two are “myeh” on me. The Rossy is too, I don’t know, just sour! Somewhere I have Noel au Balcon but can’t find my sample. I like it a lot and have come close to buying it. Of all the ones on the two Antoine lists that I’ve tried, none can come close though to my favorite, Luxe Patchouli. That’s up there in my all-time top five. I didn’t wear it today though because it’s warm and humid thunderstorm-y weather here today and it just isn’t right. But now I’m wishing I had a bit more Daphne left to play with!

Completely forgot today was Friday. This week has been SO LONG that it seems like Friday should have been cancelled just to spite me. I have to work tomorrow anyway, so it doesn’t feel like the end of the week.
Anyway, I was craving White Linen and left the house in a glorious cloud of it. Promptly upon arrival to work I had to wrestle a large dog covered in urine and vomit. Second time this week I’ve spent the day smelling like a truck stop restroom. Did I mention it’s been a long week? 😉

Your comment made me laugh out loud. I love the idea of perfume that doesn’t quite make the grade being relegated to “behind the knees” status. BTK. For me today trying to write engagingly about helping organizations develop strategic plans, driving both of my kids hither and thither, wrestling a medical protocol for my son out of our school district, and running errands to the pharmacy and to get a belt for my youngest—all fall into the BTK category. My perfume? I’m enjoying it full on wrists and neck 🙂

(I got the Pd sample set, which considering their exorbitant prices is not a terrible deal — 2 ml each of all their scents for $65). Yesterday I wore Belle de Jour which I actually like better than most reviewers – it’s vintage in style but very light and airy in execution.

I’ve got a few Antoines, but I wanted another ELDO today: Fils de Dieu. Yummmm

I wore that earlier this week (my thought process being that it was Antoine-adjacent 😉 ) and man, is that stuff good. It’s one of the few perfumes in my collection that I enjoy equally in all 4 seasons (which I’ve always thought would be a good Community Project, btw.)

That is a good community project!!

For some reason Fils has been filed as a summer scent in my mind and this is the first time I’ve worn it this year. I think I just really love how bloomy it gets in the heat.

I bought a sample of it after I read your piece on summer scents for BdJ (in which you also recommended California Reverie, iirc. I now have bottles of both 🙂 )

I used to think of it as a winter perfume, but now it defies categorization as I wear it year-round. Different weather amplifies different facets, all equally gorgeous. (Plus it smells delicious on my husband. So A+ for versatility!)

SOTD is ELdO “Jasmin et Cigarette” by Antoine M.

Notes are apricot, tonka, musk, jasmine, cedar, tobacco, hay, amber and cumin.

Very nice and the ‘cigarette pack’ tobacco is a change from the usual pipe/ shag scents.

Have you smelled Habanita L’Esprit? It took me a while to pin down a hint of cigarette smoke in that one. Pipe tobacco isn’t really my thing, but apparently I’m okay with cigarettes 😉

Antoine-ing in Kenzo Parfum d’Ete, one of 3 perfumes I had in my collection at the turn of the century. Oddly, it smells totally different than I remember. I recalled a very green floral with a streak of lemon. Today I’m getting fruity floral. ?

Wearing it made me think of another pre-rabbit hole fave, Miss Pucci, which I sprayed under my wrist. This one is actually better than I remembered (and one I never, ever see mentioned on blogs.) I may have to put it back into rotation.

Oh, and had meant to say – what a great photo. (I recognized Rossy de Palma immediately, probably due in part to anticipating lots of peeps wearing it today. And also being a big fan of Pedro Almodóvar around the time I wore Kenzo Parfum d’Ete 😉 )

I seem to be very light on Antoines, other than Eris Parfums Night Flower, which doesn’t seem quite right for this morning’s supermarket shopping. I’ll save that for the evening, and maybe go with Hermes Jour Absolu this morning.

I have been so sick this week coughing up my giblets ( which fashionably match the pantone colour of the year ) and marvelling at the novel way eyeballs appear to sweat. The lowlight was taking the dogs for a walk on the hill … Pre dawn, in the rain….and running out of steam on the walk back up the hill to the car. I ended up having to rest, leaning against a log as big drops of water fell from the tree above, straight down my neck while the smaller dog helpfully tried to drink the drops of rain off my glasses. Wearing tiger balm and encouraging myself to buck up. Wonderoud later.

I spritzed on some Jasmin et Cigarette this morning. Some days this smells wonderful on me, some days it smells like a cat peed in a cold ashtray.

I thought I was having the first kind of day this morning, but now I suspect I’m having the second.

I joined one or two of you in Tocca Brigitte today. The decant I have of that is shockingly the only one I have from either Antoine. My guy has a decant of Hinoki though that was mine before I decided I like it better on him.

Wearing the last of the generous sample of Eris Night Flower I got from Wendysue, who has truly excellent taste. It’s a lovely, rich, spicy oriental. I don’t really get tuberose, although this time, on a warm day, it did go through a stage where I smelled something a bit mentholated, like a much mellower version of the opening of Tubereuse Criminelle. I can’t really smell leather, either, just a warm, rich, somewhat animalic base. It gets quiet on me after about four hours, but is still definitely there. This perfume is cheering me up after a moderately lousy week, featuring several culinary mishaps, and the guy I’ve been seeing cancelling on me–again. At this point, even if it really is his mother he’s seeing instead of me, I may be out. Have a great weekend everyone, and I’ll be back to read everyone else’s choices after I make what I hope will be a decent curry.

And thank you, Robin, for posting the link to the 2014 version of next week’s project. I immediately thought of a perfume, and then started wondering if I’d worn it last time. Yup.

Well I forgot about syncing up today , I wore Gres Cabotine and overlayerd a unearthed find from a mish mash shelf some Healing Gardens Green Tea . Mmm.
I’ll sync late by wearing either First Premier Bouquet (floral probably more appropriate for a hot humid day tomorrow )or Burberry London for men ( love the port and mimosa notes! May end up wearing in the evening).
