Friday scent of the day 12/23

Posted by Robin on 23 December 2016 217 Comments

fendi flower purse

Happy Just Finish It Friday! Our community project for today:  finish a sample or decant you’ve been hanging onto for a long time, OR wear from a precious bottle that’s getting low. Big bonus points if you finish a bottle! Thanks to Elisa for the suggestion.

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I have completely failed this project. I have family in town, and I seem to be coming down with something (there is an awful lot of crud going around) and I just couldn't concentrate. I am back in Fendi Theorema.

Reminder: on 12/30 we're doing the Best of 2016 — wear one of your favorite fragrance releases of 2016.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2016 (or Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017), where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the Fendi back is from the same collection as the shoes, I think. It was $5,200 or $7,200, I'm not sure which and maybe it depended on the size? Anyway, I don't think you can buy it anymore.

Happy Friday Everyone! Wearing Fraise Mara des Bois by Yves Rocher from a sample that I just poured completely on me. This is a strawberry lollipop scent. No more than that. I do not like it so much. Super sweet and it seems that will not last for too long.
Very busy for the last couple of days getting ready for Christmas. My family (7) is coming over so I have been spending time cleaning, wrapping presents and doing some cooking. Hard task but we will enjoy being together.

I thought I was the only one who employs the “pour it on me” method:)

I like wafting and really smelling the fragrance beyond me having to stick my nose to my wrist…and yes, I was one of those obnoxious people in the 1980s/1990s with whom you would NOT want to get in an elevator with-LOL!

I agree with you. I love to smell the perfume I am wearing very well and if I need to “pour the whole sample on me” I do it without any hesitation and with much pleasure. I usually do this with most of my samples unless I know it is a very strong one.

Ah I do this too!! Dabber samplers make scents stick so close to your skin (and sometimes that’s a good thing), so I definitely pour on a whole dang sample at once!
I finished up a forgotten sample vial of Mechant Loup, least mechant of all perfumes.

Not something that I would buy for sure. I just wanted to get rid of it quickly. Super yummy it was. At least it disappeared on me 2 hours later.

Wow, that is a deeply hideous bag!

Wearing Timbuktu today. I thought I might finish the sample–it leaped into my hand this morning, and there was so little left it seemed like destiny–but alas (or hooray), there is one more application left.

We get out of work early today, so I will finish the last little bits of shopping, and then it is a series of parties and gatherings for the next few days. Hope everyone who celebrates has a good holiday!

I am finishing 10 Corsco Como and I am very sad. Hand Holding please.

In attempt to finish this black tea that I have had forever I brewed it with some orange blossom water, but I didn’t finish the container completely.

I actually really enjoyed this community project, there is something freeing and liberating about finishing up samples and things. Thanks for whom ever suggested it.

Also got some tea from MF from a friend that went to Paris, Midnight in Paris is the name. I haven’t tried it yet.

I think we have Elise to thank and I completely agree! There is something freeing and liberating about finishing and downsizing in general…I have done this with my clothes and I cannot begin to tell you how easy it is for me to get dressed in the morning :)

It’s sooooo true about downsizing clothes! With a few classic things (black pants, good shoes, etc), less really is more. Every item of clothes that my hubs and I own fit easily in our closet and drawers. No seasonal changing of the closet! (Keep in mind we live in Atlanta, so no need for wool sweaters and such!) :)

I hope you recover quickly Robin, being ill is no fun.
I’m wearing a new sample of Les Indes Galantes by MDCI. It’s gorgeous, but so much like Sacrebleu! that I, fortunately, don’t need a bottle.

I’m having a very good day for tea (working from home is bliss!). I started the day with a gorgeous Earl Grey Céleste Bio, and have since moved on to an excellent 2nd Flush Darjeeling called Sungma.

Good to know, austenfan! I missed out on Sacrebleu, so I need to try Les Indes Galantes. (I know there’s a Sacrebleu Intense, but I think that chiaroscuro version misses the point.)

I haven’t smelled the Intense often enough or recently enough to be able to comment on that. All I know is that when I put on Indes Galantes yesterday morning it instantly reminded me of Sacrebleu. Haven’t tried them side by side, and for all I know the Intense is closer to the original than this perfume. It is lovely, though, and very much worth a try.

Here is the description from the website…

on my skin it is a resinous gingerbread for the EDP and the solid is a bit sweeter gingerbread…it is a perfect holiday scent and I also like wearing it to yoga (very light application so as to not offend anyone)….I bought my EDP for $15 and my solid for $6 at my local health food store…I am sure you could find it at Whole Foods in the city for a similar price…it is nice and inexpensive….do give it a try if you come across it! And the soy candle…wow! that is really good!!!

Wearing SSS Tabac Aurea from a very old sample that I’ve been strategically holding onto. I didn’t manage to finish off the sample this morning, but I’ll reapply tonight and probably use up the rest.

I had been planning on wearing Onda…but I wasn’t emotionally prepared to run out of that sample yet. :)

After my shower later I’ll switch to my beloved and hoarded decant of Tabac Blond – today’s wearing won’t use it up, but I think I get points for wearing something that I have very little of now and that, when it’s gone, it will be gone for good. To all the Theorema wearers (Robin, Dawn, Isabella, etc.): I hope the people around you are properly appreciative! May your bottles never run dry.
Robin, I hope you don’t succumb to the crud. I’ve been fighting a cold/cough for about a week now, without much success. I haven’t even felt like wearing perfume for the last few days, since I can’t really smell and enjoy it (and am too selfish -blush- to care about others…).

I ran across a bottle of Egoiste in a Duty Free shop in the Belize airport on vacation, so I BOUGHT IT. Ostensibly it’s a Christmas present for my 16-year-old son (who liked it when I offered him a sniff in the shop, and he never likes anything!), but if he doesn’t want it… well, I’ll find it a home. :) Like on my dresser.

I travelled there once with my DH and MIL (she was born there), and scored a very HTF bottle (YSL Y in EdP).
I think the reason they still have cool stuff is that they only have to renew their stock every 15 years. ????

It is a strange thing, it seems to not be on the market in Canada at all…there is the Platinum but not the original, at least not that I’ve found.

SOTD = very last drops of Hermes Kelly Caleche EDP Bottle #1

If I’m able to yank the top open without damaging the bottle, I’m sure there’s still another wear or two left…but alas, at it stands, R.I.P. bottle #1. A moment of silence please.

I also finished Solstice Scents Creamy Whipped Soap Foxcroft and a tube of Yu-Be Moisturizing Skin Cream (thanks to jennkr for reminding me how good this one is…I’ve stockpiled as it fills the gap for me to get to free shipping when I order from Sephora). My La Mer spf 50 sunscreen is still chugging along…will probably be all done in the next day or two.

Last night, I ended up going out impromptu with a co-worker. We went to a pop-up bar and had this:
    http://www.delish.com/holiday-recipes/christmas/a50664/snow-globe-cocktails-new-york-city/

And since the bar did not serve food, we went to a tiny French restaurant and had a Croque Monsieur and Tuna Tartare and chased these down with a glass of wine. All under $80 for each of us including the snow globe drink and the cab ride back to NYPenn.

And finally, here’s a peek into holiday decor Chez hajusuuri:

The restaurant is called Le Pif, a tiny hole in the wall at 2058 Broadway between 70th and 72nd. The menu was small but the food was far from petite! The Croque Monsieur was stuffed and the bread was fluffy and grilled to perfection. The tuna tartare was very fresh. It’s a great place to go to either before or after an event at Lincoln Center!

I’m sort of reverse participating by wearing a Stash, which is really a full bottle missing a couple spritzes, the absolute opposite of near empty.

The only thing I managed to get done yesterday was a nap and burning some bacon. I’m a mover and a shaker as you can see. Feeling a bit better today, although my nose is like a busted water main. Ugh. I did manage to take my rear to spin class, so that’s something I guess.

I hope everone’s ready for the holiday. I’m totally NOT and have a crap ton of baking to do today. At least I can look forward to taste testing later. Sugar and butter always perks me up ????

SotD = Ambre Narguile which has become my de facto holiday scent over the fast few weeks. I’ve used up much of my 4 ml sample, but I’m glad it’s not empty. I think I prefer the dab sample to a spray for AN. I wear less yet it has more oomph.

Feel better, Robin, and to everyone who is fighting illness, please take good care. I can imagine how Theorema is perfect for strength and comfort on sick days though I’ve never smelled it. Ambre Narguile is one of a very few scents I can wear when I’m feeling poorly. Let’s all wear double doses of scent today to boost morale and fend off free-floating pathogens. Perfume as penicillin, it’s good for what ails ya’.

It was nice the roads were quieter than usual as I drove my high schooler across town early this morning. Half day at school today, then it’s time to hunker down, bake brownies and snickerdoodles, watch a movie, and enjoy the rain.

Love that happy Fendi bag! In other smiley news I saw a full arc rainbow yesterday afternoon, it ended right outside my front door. :) Hope everyone’s weekend is full of nice surprises, fragrant and otherwise.

    Happy Friday!

    1) Almost used up a sample of Jo Malone’s Incense & Cedrat, layer with the last of The Body Shop Satsuma spray. I smell very holiday appropriate and very fresh at the same time. These layer beautifully. I will be getting another body spray for summer,

    2) Holiday weekend and week! It’s going to be VERY relaxing. I have Academy hook ups so there are going to be special showings of movies all next week for nominations, which I am pretty excited about.

    3) If you celebrate, I do hope you have a good Holiday week! There is too much wickedness and darkness about- it can seem overwhelming. But I do implore ALL of you to connect with loved ones, take the time to have a walk, some good drinks of your choice, and have some joy.

To say goodbye to Paris, I trotted along to Jovoy and got myself 100ml of Parfums d’Empire “Ambre Russe” and 50ml of Jovoy’s own “Les Jeux sont Faits”. So when I add that for the community project and as my SOTD I drained the last of a 5ml decant of Les Jeux, I’m not sure I’m ahead on points.

I had to do it though, because they were so good and generous with samples when I popped in (and bought nothing) in Summer. I came away with another 9 samples plus a 12ml GWP of Ambre Russe travel size, so I am a happy bunny.

I also bade a less-than-tearful farewell to the teams on my programme. No more days. It will take a while to sink in.

You may all get ready to smile sardonically in January when I start to fret about having no new contract to go to. :^D

I didn’t finish a thing and didn’t want to wear a “holiday” scent so I’m wearing MFK Amyris Femme. I’m spending the holidays with friends in Sacramento so today I’m packing, cleaning, and generally preparing for the New Year. I have already started on my New Year’s resolutions (just a few tasks I keep putting off, like making a will with a pet trust and my advance directives) and I’m also vowing to put on perfume more than once each day. Here’s hoping everyone has Happy Holidays and the sick feel better soon.

Robin, I hope you feel better soon! I’ve totally failed on this week’s theme, even though I’ve been contemplating the woodrat’s nest of samples in my perfume cabinet (formerly known as the bathroom linen closet; poor, marginalized towels…). I’ve just very specifically been in the mood for Theorema, Safran Troublant, and Jeux de Peau, so that’s what I’ve been wearing, from bottles still gloriously more full than not. A cold, rainy day today, and I’m back in Safran Troublant and cuddly cashmere.

Merry Christmas Robin. Thanks for all your great posts and I hope you feel better today. Christmas Eve here and still no decision on ‘what we are doing for Christmas’ has been made…we might just take a picnic to the botanic gardens and spread out on the grass and lounge about and read books and drink wine. I do need advice on a good sunscreen…one that doesn’t feel like a tube of oil paint or look ghostly silver.
Wearing Blackbird and listening to one in the tree outside.
Lots of Christmas/holiday love to everyone in NST land. You are the first thing I read each morning as I wake up and there is no better start to my day…so thanks for being so completely wonderful.

As far as sunscreen goes, good ol city block sheer from clinique for every day use has done my face well for years. They have a stronger version, maybe it’s called super? that bumps the spf up to 40.
When going to the beach I add whatever 50 level I have on the go (they expire! apply generously and use them up).

I use La Roche Posay. A tiny bit of whiteness but to counter that I put a bit of sesame oil on my face first, then the sunscreen. This seems to alleviate the white face issue. You smell great. Enjoy the day!

For the face, neck, décolletage and ears, I use La Mer SPF 50. And because I’m worth it, I have used it on my arms as well. Neutrogena Dry Touch SPF 70 is good. I also sometimes use baby products as they tend to be less allergenic but I’ve had an allergic reaction to one I tried this past summer (I’m too lazy to see which one it was).

The Japanese ones don’t leave as much of a white cast. I happen to find them to drying, but I have very, very dry skin esp. in winter.

If you scroll through the comments you will find tips of how to get the products as well. Have a great Christmas!

My decant of Dior Cuir Cannage leaked and/or evaporated so I dabbed on most of the remainder. It smells like the inside of the luxurious leather bag I would be carrying on my trip we’re microfiber not more practical ;-) .

Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Happy Holiday Season.

Yikes. Cuir Cannage was too perfumey and was one of my scent-phobe mom’s list of no no’s.

OK really finished that Mitzah today. Bye bye crappy plastic decant. See you never. Has anyone discovered glass decants that reliably don’t evaporate?
My first two decants ever (purchased from Daisy, I think, where has she gone?) have outlasted countless others. They are a wavy glass, with a red top, and their fill levels never seem to change!
On the other hand, the very popular plain glass, cheap white plastic top (that I have used as well!) seem to be sometimes fine, sometimes terrible. And plastic decants? Sometimes I can see the evaporating perfume in the threads of the top!

I got my Cuir Beluga decant from Daisy as well and it came in the wavy glass bottle with a red collar and white atomizer top. For a while until I wore it for days and days without rest, the volume seemed to expand! Anyway, this type of atomizer had been out of stock from BestBottles for over a year! I have to replenish my decant atomizers soon and I’m actually thinking of upgrading them but the only thing holding me back is that they cost double or even triple what I paid for the natural/transparent atomizers. I found the white 4mL atomizers to be leaky.

Robin, I hope you feel better and manage to fight off whatever bug is trying to get you.

SOTD is Ubar. I unknowingly messed up this week’s project a bit. I’d intended to wear the rest of a sample of Alien I’d been hanging on to, but it was apparently already used up. (Points for finishing it before today?) The Ubar isn’t quite the end of the sample, but it’s close. It’s also technically not the EDP it should be. It’s actually an EDC/EDT I made by putting a little vodka in the bottle, which had emptied to all but a residue in transit. I let it mature for a while, and–violà–Ubar. Take that, leakage!

All the best for very happy holidays to all in the NST community! Have a wonderful weekend!

used up the last microlitres of Vanille d’iris, so now it’s time to decide which of the many Iris based scents I’ve tried lately might be FB worthy, with a new contender (for me), Dior homme, well that’s a decision for 2017.

Rummaged around today trying to find something near the end and came up with a bottle of Chanel Gardenia extrait that had 4 drops remaining. Not exactly a holiday scent, but I get full points!! I think this is the first bottle I’ve finished in over 15 years.

I chose the ‘from a precious bottle that’s running low’ option: SOTD is SL Rahat Loukhoum from a bell jar bottle I purchased at Uncle Serge’s salon during my one and only visit to Paris, so it’s very precious to me in more ways rhan one. At that time, there weren’t nearly as many niche perfume houses, so a visit to the SL salon was one to remember!

But for the past hour or so what I’ve been smelling – or, rather, deeply inhaling – is the wonderful earthy scent of mushrooms, various kinds of both dried and fresh, I used to make mushroom and barley soup for my traditional Polish Christmas Eve supper tomorrow night. I’m enjoying this right now more than any perfume! Will probably add more Rahat a little later; its notes will harmonize nicely with the kolaczki I’ll be baking.

Merry Christmas to all who celebrate, and peace and joy to all!

So I finally decided to wear Rochas Mystere today and, looking for reviews, a blog I hadn’t visited before, Life with Perfume:

    https://sillyage.wordpress.com/2014/09/28/rochas-mystere-1978/

Surprise: the author is Victor Wong, owner of Zoologist Perfumes!

I love that he appreciates his collection the way I do mine:

“…it’s one of those scents that I’ll occasionally take the cap off to sniff, put the cap back on, and immediately take it off and smell again.”

Does anyone else here do that?

LOL, I have to add this quote from his review of two different concentrations of vintage Lanvin Scandal:

“The leather in this case smells like a new leather jacket instead of smoked old leather sofa found in a temple that burns incense 24/7.”

      :D

SOTD = almost finished off a spray sample of E&J Nirvana Black. Looks like I have enough for tomorrow, too, and then it ought to be done.

I’ve been fighting the Christmas crud since Wednesday. Boo! What started as a very nasty sore throat has morphed into a head cold. I am staying away from the rest of the world, eating lots of chicken soup, and drinking lots of tea.

Robin, we’re scent twins today! I’m finishing up a small decant of Theorema that I’ve had since forever. Hope you start feeling better rather than worse! When I feel like something coming on, I dose myself with massive quantities of Vitamin C. At least 5,000, since the body doesn’t store it and you can’t take too much. Seems to do the trick most of the time.
    Happy Holidays to everyone!

So late today. I had today off so I ran a few errands this morning and came home and made two cheesecakes for Christmas Day. More cooking and cleaning tomorrow.

I used up the last bit of my sample of DSH Gingembre. I really like this spicy gingerbread scent but already own Five O’Clock and Chergui so I don’t need it. It was the perfect scent for a day of baking.

I managed to finish off two decants today! I have been making a focused effort on emptying decants and samples since the summer. My SOTD was Cristalle. I’ve had the decant for about 6 years and leapt to a bottle purchase a few months ago.

SOTN is Fourreau Noir. Mmm lux barbershop. I really love this and luckily have another 5ml decant on backup.
