Wednesday scent of the day 12/21

Posted by Robin on 21 December 2016 236 Comments

Fendi Flowerland Strappy Skimmer Flats

It's Hump Day! Plus, happy International Dalek Remembrance Day or happy Humbug Day, take your pick. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm still in Fendi Theorema, and may I never, ever finish it up. I did find another tea sample I could finish: Upton Thé Mélange Russe, gone.

Reminder: 12/23 will be Just Finish It Friday — finish a sample or decant you’ve been hanging onto for a long time, OR wear from a precious bottle that’s getting low. Big bonus points if you finish a bottle! (Suggested by Elisa)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2016 (or Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017), where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the Fendi Flowerland Strappy Skimmer Flats are $990 at Neiman Marcus.

I am such a failure this year — STILL have not smelled it. Any day now I will drag myself to the mall.

Oooh, up early enough today to see the SotD poll without comments! Woohoo!

I don’t know what I can finish this Friday. I truly live off samples, despite my bottles. But today I’m dabbing on vintage Opium edt from one of two minis (actually the one that smells better AND the one with the least left. Isn’t that always the way?).

I could live off samples for years, I’m sure! But probably I’d discover half of them are spoiled ;-)

    Love the shoes :)

SOTD is Tihota over Lord of Misrule shower gel. I can never, ever run out of Tihota, but I am trying to use up the shower gel before I order more, so I give myself 1/4 point towards this week’s challenge.

Patchouli, vanilla and musk follow me everywhere.

Ok. I am obsessed with amyris essential oil and I wrote in of the comments that I am addicted to the smell of amyris and Hajusuuri read it as “I am addicted to the smell of my armpits”…yesterday when I wrote that I would be wearing Pacifica’s Avalon Juniper all week Kanuka interpreted that as ” I will be wearing Avalon jumpers all week” which she assumed was some odd American Christmas tradition ….hajusuuri jokes that my comments have a way of being interpreted in very amusing ways….I was “trying” to be funny in my comment today but then again comedy was never my strong suite :)!!

Hope you feel better…gargle with warm salt water for the sore throat!

Lol, I saw some of that yesterday, but didn’t read thoroughly through it. That’s hilarious!

Enjoy your armpits and jumpers ;)

I need to run to the store for another nasal rinse bottle and then will gargle. I was diagnosed with acute chronic sinusitis, so whenever I get ill it’s usually affected to my sinuses being set off. I can tell it is this time because I’ve got a seriously post nasal drip going on.

That shoe is cute, but something about it looks very uncomfortable. I also somehow think it should have Hello Kitty on it.

I’m in Iris Nazarena today – just because it was the closest perfume to me this morning.
I survived yesterday’s shenanigans, but am suffering today. I woke up yesterday with a sore throat and it just got progressively worse as the day went on. I only had a little wine with dinner and mostly drank hot tea all day.
I’m not much better today and keeping the sore throat at bay – barely – with medicine making me sleepy and a large cup of hot tea. Luckily it’s a half day here in the office. I can go run one last xmas shopping errand this afternoon and hopefully get everything wrapped before the husband gets home. Then – I’ll be in bed until xmas.

It’s very subtle, I can hardly smell anything on me. Reminds me of a fragrance from the 90’s , not sure which one. I will get back to you in that.

SotD: the last of a sample of SSS Sienna Musk–objectively it is perfectly well-made, wearable without being dull, but it does nothing for me. It is easy for me to imagine someone else loving this.

SOTD is nearly the last of my sample of Histoires de Parfums 1804. It’s supposed to feature pineaple but I can’t find any. Mind you I’ve had the sample for a while now. It’s soft, sweet and nice.

Tea is Earl Grey Fleurs again, but I’ve added some chestnut oolong to liven things up a bit.

SOTD is Chanel 19 to help me cope with this morning’s surprise – a totally clogged shower drain, discovered at the point when the conditioner was mostly, but not entirely, out of my hair. Tried to clear it the way that usually works, but the cloggage is deeper than I can reach with the tools I have available. Aaarrrrggggghhh.

Hi there! Ugh, what a pain! I am having plumbing related new home owner blues (the stopper in my sink is stuck!)

I have found that the Zip It tool is very helpful for drain clogs when I was at the apartment. It looks like a long plastic line of teeth, but it’s very effective with clogs.

And if Zip It doesn’t work there’s a drain snake/auger thingie that’s more expensive, but cheaper than a plumber.

Thank you both! It looked like the drain clearer combined with 5 or so gallons of very hot water did the trick, but we won’t know for sure until someone takes the next shower. :) That Zip It tool sounds like something I need to invest in pronto.

However, it looks like I’m fairly close to killing the second of two 10ml decants of Iris Poudre, and I smell good, and I have a bottle, so there’s that.

Update on Gaze’s DODMERB physical: he did fine. He has two physical issues which we thought might disqualify him, but as it turns out, neither is a thing the military cares about. (He did not do as well at the eye appointment, so I don’t know whether he will pass that portion or not. We’re a long long way from the kid whose uncorrected vision was 20/80 in one eye and 20/200 in the other… but his depth perception still sucks because of the amblyopia, and his left eye’s vision is 20/40 corrected. So. I guess we’ll find out soon whether he passed, or if not, whether his vision is even good enough for the USMA to pursue a waiver. And then there’s the question of whether they want him enough to pursue a waiver… It’s a long process.)

It’s rare that I find somebody that doesn’t like Lyric but I don’t like Ubar and I’m sure that is blasphamy. Ubar smells like flowers and bug spray to my nose.

Ubar is all about the bug spray for me. I had to scrub it. If Lyric is a sandlewood bomb, I might have to try that.

That’s funny because Ubar smells *exactly* like a scent sachet that a friend in Egypt had attached to his AC unit. So, no matter how much I might like it, I just can’t justify spending an Amouage amount of money on something my brain swears is air freshener. If only I’d smelled Ubar first!

Ditto. Sandalwood usually isn’t migraine friendly for me at all and I have no problem with Lyric except that I wore too much on a hot, humid day a couple of years ago and haven’t craved it much since. To me it smells of Ylang Ylang and cardamom custard.

I don’t remember who it was, but someone mentioned a while back that Indiescents is offering free shipping and that person deserves a huge enabler pin. I ordered a significant amount of samples, including a full set of Kerosene ones that I’ve wanted to try for ages. I’m wearing my Hanbury sample from the same order and I see now why it’s so popular here on NST.

So I’m not really following the theme, but as Austenfan said – wearing a sample is already good.

Hey NST, I blinked and it’s Wednesday. End of year busy-ness and whatnot can get in the way sometimes.

ScentofthePastFewDays = Guerlain Cologne du 68, the citrus is the perfect olfactory boost when I’m wilting. It is as good as Orange Sanguine and I prefer 68’s drydown.

I’ve not finished a sample, decant, or bottle recently, but I liberated a grand number of unloved samples by foisting them onto willing coworkers. Tis the season of excess, fragrant and otherwise, after all.

    Winter Solstice!

    1) New homeowner blues- of all the things, my bathroom sick stopper is STUCK in the sink. Worse yet the nobs to make the stopper move do not seem connected to the stopper, so I can’t move it from the bottom of the sink. (Insert Charlie Brown yell)

    2) And finished a sample of Tom Ford Rive Ambre. I will quote from my review on Fragrantica:

This is a fresh, citrusy and herbally fragrance that dries down to a warm, orange-y zest and warm musky scent. There is a teensy bit of spice, which I think is the reference of the amber, which grounds the fragrance. Absolutely beautiful in composition and perfect for heat, which makes the scent bloom!
Alas- this has the half life of a fruit fly. You enjoy all of the above in about an hour, just long enough for your work commute or a coffee date. This fragrance would be better served in a larger bottle, and sold for about half the current asking price.

    3) Office potluck, y’all! And because I am that person, I brought a veggie tray with bagna cauda.

    4) Daleks? Yikes! Too bad there is no new Doctor Who special this year- but can make do with the Husbands of River Song.

My bathroom sink did that, too. I replaced the stopper and the hardware that connects it to the nob thingy. It wasn’t an awful job and was a little faster than waiting for the plumber.

I like to bring veggies and hummus to work for potluck. I’ll do bagna cauda next time. Sounds delicious.

I stumbled upon this combination last week with a cardigan still wafting Coco when I put on Vanilla Flash so today I am trying them together in earnest.

They work quite well together…kind of a mega oriental. ;) I don’t typically layer perfumes…but maybe I will start tinkering more.

$990? No way! That’s like three month’s salary for a middle class family here in India. I think I would just rather grab some maryjanes at payless and stick my own home made daisies on there with a glue gun…
SOTD: AG Hadrian. For some reason, what seemed to be kind of a boring ish citrus frag in Massachusetts is a super sophisticated lemon spice cologne here in South Asia. Very refreshing in contrast to some of the other er um “smells”.
This morning I discovered a huge (at least 6 inch long) black centipede in the bathroom. She looked like she might bite, so I squeegied her into the toilet. I tried to wash her down with a bucket of water, but she disappeared into a crack. If she comes out again I will definitely photograph her. The bugs grow really big here, but they are pretty non aggressive and just want to be left alone usually.

We get some pretty massive centepedes or millipedes here in our apt sometimes. From the corner of my eye I’ve mistaken them for a mouse! My cats love them but they seem to give them intestinal troubles when they’ve eaten them.

I need that finish it Friday discipline for the stack of almost-read books by my bed. I get so close to the end and the get distracted…and now I’ve drifted into Nozknoz’s Hillybilly Elegy when I started the week reading about a North Island missionary botanist which took over from Mandy Aftel…and can I read the books i bought as Christmas gifts for my mother etc. without bending the spine, splashing with coffee or otherwise messing. I definitely need a few good sprays of discipline…or Cristalle. Wishing you all a happy day up there….at least your days will soon be getting longer.

This comment took me back! My late mother, who would have been 95 today and died over 20 years ago, used to buy me wondering books for Christmas – the complete Dickens or the Oxford Jane Austen. BUT she would read them first, with considerably less care than you, and I still find ashes and spaghetti sauce or bits of Welsh rarebit!

Oh, good. I’ll be interested in hearing what you think of Hillbilly Elegy, which I haven’t actually read it. I don’t get around to nonfiction very often, so I’ll need a lot of motivation.

I end up doing that all the time! I’ll start one book and then another until I have several going at the same time, and sometimes one or more will be abandoned for a time. I think the worst was when I got about 4/5 of the way through ‘My Name is Red’ and then didn’t get back to it until like 5 years later. (Not one of the best books to do that with!)

I was lucky to be in the right place to hear acapella Christmas music a short while ago. It was fantastic and gave my day a lift.

It’s nice to hear good music in unexpected places. My unexpected music memory was waking up to two concert calibre musicians playing. At one point in my life, my family lived in a duplex with two uncles and their families and one of the uncles was a marimba player; he and a master pianist were rehearsing for a gig.

Gidday. Promises to be a warm Thursday here, and I’m going out play all day with a friend. She’s very sweetly planned me a mystery tour Christmas present, starting with morning coffee, followed by–well, it’s a mystery. So, I’m dressing cool and easy, wearing a happy smile, Ninfeo Mio , and a straw hat in case the mystery is largely outside in a rose garden or a park or something. The dear man says I look about 12, which would really be quite a feat if it were true…in other news, I’ve started making bread again, and I’m happy to report that it’s been successful. So successful, in fact, that despite being full of roast chicken and vegetables last night, the dear one managed to squeeze in the crusts from BOTH ends of the freshly-baked loaf. When I pointed out that the loaf now has no structural integrity, and squishes when it’s sliced, he actually said, “Good crusts are worth it!” And him an engineer!

I don’t think I’ll finish any bottles in the next decade! I have been trying to use up samples, and now I’m largely down to ones where I want to keep a drop in case I want to compare it to something similar that may come along in the future, or where I keep thinking something might grow on me. That certainly happens!

It’s a windy gloomy day here, not cold, but not the sunshine I was hoping for. I think I’ll treat my colleagues to Ubar today. I saw the bugspray comments – I don’t think of that, but I can absolutely understand why some do. I hope my colleagues are in my camp :) Or are too polite to say anything…

I keep buying bottles too, and won’t use up anything before I die, I should think. The rellies who clear out my house eventually will be puzzled indeed by what to do with the two book cases full of perfume. Perhaps I should add a note to my will to tell them to get in touch with you and Kanuka…

SOTD is Maris Candida Gentile “Exultat”. A very pleasant mix of incense (in a sort of ‘Encens Flamboyant’ style) with violets.

    Top: lime, bitter orange, orange and olibanum;
    Mid: violet and violet leaf;
Base: woodsy notes, vetiver and virginia cedar.

Another thumbs up for MCG – I can see myself putting together a little collection oif 15ml bottles. So far the candidates are this one, Elepehan & Roses and Sideris, and I have a few more MCGs to sample.

A colleague was delivering stuff after work to a friend working off the Champs Elysees, so I came home that way with her. A cold, damp night where the rain turned to flurries of snow for one brief moment. I walked all the way from the Arc de Triomphe at the top to the Chrismas Market (from the Franklin D Rooselvelt stop to the Place de Concorde). There I had a raclette sandwich on sourdough (hi Marianne!) and a spicy Toulouse sausage (hi Koyel!) plus some beers. Then walked onwards past the Tuileries, crossed rue Cambon, looked in the windows of Jovoy on rue Castiglione, past the Palais Royale (hi Serge Lutens, hi Parfuyms de Rosine) and so back to my tiny AirBnB around the corner from the Oratoire.

Meanwhile at work (2 more days!) the ‘end client’ and my client their supplier seem to have agreed a way forward for the New Year after some extremely fraught meetings. They may well fall out again in Spring, but I should be long enough gone by then to be out of range if the writs start flying. So I can feel the stress just starting to move, getting ready to fall off my shoulders during January.

I hope so cazaubon. In fact, throughout this adventure I never thought Paris was the problem, but I was very rarely in a mood to be charmed by the city. My favourite apartment was in the most anonymous neighborhood, where I didn’t feel I was wasting the opportunity to get out and about.

SOTD = Hermes Kelly Caleche EDP

This was one of my earliest loves right around when I fell into the rabbit hole. Hermes had proven time and time again that the bottle aesthetics is just as important or sometimes more important than the juice itself; after all, it is in the business of selling a luxurious lifestyle in a recognizable but not in your face way. I not only fell in love with the perfume, I also love the bottle with its twist up atomizer and the little lock adorning the rim. I covered the lock with a plastic wrap to prevent scratch damage. Anyway, I am down to my second to the last wearing and the juice at the bottom must be at least 4 years old and had a chance to get so concentrated that it now has more ooomph than the parfum extrait.

Now I know why I don’t like Lyric! Thanks. Sandalwood and I don’t get along all that well in big doses. I was expecting rose, but it’s such a distorted rose. Plus it lasts for 24+ hours, which is about 23.5 hours of misery.

I do love Ubar, and wear Fate nearly every day to work.
