Friday scent of the day 9/2

Posted by Robin on 2 September 2016 235 Comments

apple-trio-s

Happy Friday! Our community project for today: how far does the apple fall from the tree? Wear a pillar fragrance on one arm, and one of its flankers on the other. Hat tip to Happy888cat for the idea!

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I went with an apple pretty close to the tree: I'm wearing Prada Infusion d'Iris on one arm (yum!), and Infusion d'Iris Absolue on the other (yum +1).

Reminder: 9/9 will be Tea Time Friday: wear a fragrance with a tea note.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2016, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Ahh, September! Cool morning and a perfect one for a spritz of Cuir de Lancome. Yes, fall is still 3 weeks away but still….

I couldn’t come up with an idea for the project, so I’m wearing Parfum de Therese (for the nth time) and rtying to prolong that summer feeling.
I have always believed that summer starts on the 1st day of June and autumn on the 1st day of September. But after years of living in the UK I was slowly ground down by the arguments. I now concede that may, maybe, summer starts after the third week of June. What difference does it make in this climate, I said to myself, it’s not even properly summer in July on a bad year. But – autumn still starts 1st September! I wake up on Septemerb1st and I think, autumn is here. 3 weeks of summer, stolen from me, that’s how it feels.

In the northern hemisphere, according to meteorological seasons (as opposed to astronomical seasons) summer is from June 1 to August 31 so you are correct.

If only the UK would make up its mind which hemisphere it’s in! One of the reasons the other Mr Koenigsberg and I are looking to move to Spain is we’ve had one too many years where a wet Spring and a dull Autumn decided to meet in the middle of July. So often we seem to get a Northern hemisphere Winter followed by a Southern hemisphere Summer. ;^)

Ah, Mayfly, the one year I get a contract overseas for Summer and you end up having a good one. (And I was in Paris for their worst June on record. Maybe the bad weather is following me!)

Last night I wore Diorella and got some Therese on my fingers while spraying it on a friend… while these are not technically flankers I think of them as relatives 🙂 I love Therese so much (my friend did too). It’s one of those I scrimp on because my bottle is tiny, but really it would be worth saving up for.

A meteorologist in Seattle proclaimed the first day of summer here is July 15, from which time we can expect sunny dry weather through the end of August. Most years that’s spot-on. Sometimes nice weather extends through September, but the quality of light changes and there are leaves on the ground beginning in late August, so I’m with you on September 1 being the official end of summer. Sadly.

Apparently I do not buy flankers, at least that I could find. Instead I grabbed Grisette, which complements and extends yesterday’s rose fest. I’m feeling the pressure to wear all my summer stuff while I still can, and Grisette falls into this category. Last blast for the white pants too. I know we can supposedly still wear them after Labor Day, but I just can’t.

I thought about wearing white jeans today but it’s cold and pouring down rain, and that just doesn’t seem right. (Plus there’s a good chance they’ll get splattered with mud.)

I’m wearing Rien and it’s “flanker” Rien Intense Incense, which I find to be less Intense than the original. It wears much closer to the skin and feels somehow softer. Both are wonderful, but the original is my favourite.

My plan was No. 5 and Eau Premiere, but my EP sample isn’t where it’s supposed to be and I’m not sure now if it even made it home with me. I wearing my only other option, La Danza delle Libellule and a dab of the “Exceptional” (exceptionally boring) version on my wrist. It is actually a very appropriately cozy scent for a day to be spent at the antique mall.

Not in the community project this week, although I already have my 5 samples featuring tea notes lined up for next week, and 5 nuts & grains for the week after, ;^)

SOTD is one of those vindications of the process of trying new things day after day. I’m in Paul Schütze “The Tears of Eros”. Listed notes are ambergris, benzoin, cardamom, cedar, incense, green orange, guaiac wood, hyacinth, labdanum, orris and pink pepper – no pyramid is implied.

I get cool hyacinth with iris, over a background of ashy incense and a hint of citrus. It is very cool-toned, and has good lasting power even on my skin. It actually reads somewhat green to me, although Fragrantica lists it as Oriental Woody.

It’s not remotely erotic (hence those tears, I guess) and in fact is rather a ‘solitary’ scent if that makes any sense? I think people who like greens or iris scents or cool scents might enjoy this a lot. I’m testing it on a warm day and wondering if it would be even better in hot heat to act against the weather, or in Winter cold to blend in with it? But for a perfume that is miles away from my own comfort zone, this is very good stuff.

Wearing Chanel No. 5 (EDP on one wrist, extrait on the other) and Chanel No. 5 Eau Premiere on the crooks of both elbows. Eau Premiere is lighter on aldehydes and flowers, and I can definitely smell vanilla in it. But the similarities are noticeable, too. I’d say that if Premiere is a flanker, it is a flanker done right: it is definitely a different perfume, but it still retains a lot of notes of the pillar.

Idole EDT and EDP! The spicier EDT still has my heart, but the boozier EDP is fierce competition.

Ended up with just one piece from the M.A.C Star Trek collection yesterday: the highlighting powder in Luna Luster. Alas, I was too pale for the more excitingly named Highly Illogical. 🙁

Besides the Infusions, the t-shirt I’m wearing is scented with no 19 soap, like many of you I keep (still to be used) soaps in my wardrobe. This shirt is so strongly scented with no 19 that I might as well have been going commando, I think it is even stronger than EdT spritzed directly on fabric!

Wearing YSL Paris extrait, from a mini bottle, which I’m guessing must be vintage (and man, this stuff is rich) and Paris Pont des Amours, one of the Printemps LEs.

I’ve only smelled one of the other Printemps editions and can’t even remember which one (Eau de Printemps maybe, or one of the Premieres Roses). Both it and PdAmours smell like Paris, except lighter, like they’re wearing gauze sundresses instead of a dressy suit in silk twill.

Not much flanker representation in my collection, but I did find one, so I’m wearing Stella on one arm and Stella Nude on the other. I haven’t tried either in ages, and I remember liking Stella more than I’m liking it now — I’m pretty much getting conventional fruity-floral out of it, with enough rose to pull it in a more interesting direction. Stella Nude is a bit too clean for my tastes, but pleasant nonetheless.

I suppose I could have done vintage Apres l’Ondee parfum and vintage EDT, but really, it’s just going to be a day of working from home in my sweatpants, you know?

I decided to try Shalimar EDT on one arm and Shalimar PI l’eau on the other. Both nice perfumes but not really similar, to my nose, and no surprise the original smells so much better than the flanker (or flanker of a flanker). I do enjoy wearing the PI l’eau in hot weather, though, esp. for the grapefruit note.

Almost twins! I’m wearing Shalimar EDP and Shalimar PI (I have some PI L’Eau somewhere, but couldn’t find it this morning), and I completely agree that these are definitely not similar at all.

    I don’t have a single flanker!
It’s bright and fresh out today – we are getting a break from the humidity so I’m wearing AC Silver Iris, two sprays on each calf.

No clients so my project is to hang up some black out curtains. Our neighbor has odd work hours, so at 1AM or so the lights go on full blast in their kitchen and front room which is just steps from our bedroom windows. I was wondering why I’ve had insomnia for years and realized that the light coming in the windows is messing with my circadian rhythm.

Black out curtains (or blackout lining within curtains, if you’re having them made) are an absolute godsend if you’re at all light-sensitive. And ought by law to be applied in children’s bedrooms so the little horrors sleep longer! :^)

    Salutations to all!
I’m “flankless” as well. Scentless too at the moment. A very tense night with incredible storms and a highly stressed T-Rex pacing hither and yon, panting and running to safety under the bed with every crack of thunder or blast of wind. A few potted plants in the back yard succumbed to the storm, but other than that we lucked out. Again. ????

I’m planning a soothing bit of Bvlgari Black as soon as I get motivated. In the mean time, I’m sipping coffee and slowly waking up, while trying my darnedest to forget I’m working the long holiday weekend…

Hope everyone has a happy and safe holiday here in the US.

One of my dogs is terrified of storms and fireworks and I have found that swaddling her helps a lot. Either wrapping her in a blanket so it ‘ contains’ her ( works best if I can keep her next to me on the couch), or putting on her winter snow coat and tightening the straps so it is very snug on her body, and then putting her in her cage and covering the cage with a heavy blanket so it is like a little safe den. Both seem to help with easing the shaking and cowering. Poor things.

It is a scent from Chez Moi. If you post in this blog, you already have a scent from this house, guaranteed!

Ha! In all seriousness, I am WFH and commando. My at home work desk is in my bedroom and my bedroom has a chunk of my perfumes (FBs, decants, samples) and it smells like a combo of the perfume molecules that are escaping from their containers.

I am still trying to love Shalimar, it always smells like vinegar to me, but Sublisominem gave me some extrait that smells better than the EDP and the EDC that I’ve tried before. Still not a convert, but I love, love, love the Mexique one.

I tried SJP Stash yesterday at Ulta. You know, if I were still buying my fragrances in department stores, I would have grabbed this. It’s not fruity or flowery or gourmand and smells unlike most of what’s out there, but for somebody who has been exposed to Comme des Garcons and Uncle Serge and the other niche perfumers it doesn’t have the depth or the intricacy to prompt me to buy it. For the price point, it’s really nice, though, and I’ll be happy if it causes someone wearing Modern Muse to switch.

I tried the Stash also and liked it, but then smoky/woodsy/spicy is my favorite kind of fragrance anyway. It reminded me of the original Organza Indecence w/o the sweet pudding note I get from OI that I enjoy alternating with its smoky/woody notes. I’m not a fan of Lovely or any of the other SJP scents except for Covet, which is one of my shape-shifting favorites. I’d agree with you on hoping someone wearing Modern Muse would switch to Stash.

My comment above is based on a paper sample I rubbed on my skin yesterday. Today I spritzed some on the top of my hand and, while it still reminded me of OI st first, as I went about my errands and the fragrance dried down, it reminded me quite a bit of Halle Berry’s original fragrance, Halle. It also shares a strong olibanum note, although the fig in Halle makes it sweeter.

I think I saw a print ad that said it was exclusive to Ulta. How long can that last, 3-6 months? When I tried it, it struck me as a light oriental topped with cedar/sandalwood a la TF Santal Blush. Lasted maybe 2 hours.

A gorgeous late summer (or early meteorological fall) day here – bright summer sunshine but cooler fall temps in the mid-70’s. In a nod to the change of seasons, I’m wearing EL Sensuous extrait and EL Sensuous Nude edp. The Sensuous line works well for me, and I have at least minis of all of them in extrait, edp, and edt form and enjoy rotating them through the seasons. The original Sensuous edp is my favorite and I enjoy it in the fall.

I didn’t have many options: 1) Shalimar and Shalimar Parfum Initial – couldn’t bring myself to it, because I strongly dislike PI, 2) Iris Nobile edp and Acqua Nobile Iris – have no idea which is a flanker of which (or are they both flankers to the original edt? or is edp just a different concentration of the original edt and doesn’t count as a flanker?)

Of course, I had to cheat: Shalimar on one wrist, Jicky on the other. If Shalimar is a result of Jacques Guerlain’s dumping a bottle of vanillin into a vat of Jicky, surely Shalimar is a flanker to Jicky. Right? Anyway, they are really fun to wear together. They are pretty close, especially early on, and in their sillage. Later, and closer to the skin, the nuances appear, and it’s easy to miss these nuances when wearing only one fragrance.

It so doesn’t matter, but I think the EdP is just a different concentration, and I never did decide if the Acqua Nobile things were flankers to the original Nobile series, but I guess so. Talk about crazy naming systems.

They aren’t flankers at all, but the Aedes de Venustas line all seem like variations on a theme, so I’m wearing mostly Iris Nazarene, but Oeillet Bengale on one wrist. I like these a lot but they may make me cough. It may also be something atmospheric though. I hope so.

Keeping it simple today as I’m heading to the dermatologist 🙁
    I dislike seeing any dr.
Wearing a touch of Bohea Boheme from a recent sample I purchased. Not bad.. smoky, for sure, and some amber too.

    Happy Friday and long weekend!

No flankers for me. Wearing Amouage 25, and feeling like I should have dressed up more. Trying to get bids from general contractors to do some work on my home, and the economy must be doing better because no-one is returning my calls.

I’m feeling grateful for samples and decants so I can play along today. 😀

Following Robin in a dab of Infusion d’Iris with a lovely spritz of the Absolue. A few years ago I would not have thought I would enjoy these scents. Now they’re my catnip.

In the evening I’ll switch to Chanel No. 5 parfum + EdP + Eau Premiere. I thought about wearing these this morning but couldn’t do it. My nose craves them in the evenings.

A really good combo is Angel and Lolita Lempicka. For some reason that defys logic and noses, they are smashing together. Wear Angel in your hair and at the sides of your neck. Spritz Lolita Lempicka wherever else you would like. Ridiculously delicious.

Did not want to wear Alien and its flankers today. Ditto with Angel. All the flankers I have seem to be built for cooler weather. So today I’m testing a sample of Elizabeth and James’ Rose. I definitely get the geranium and the rose, which is a honeyed one on me. Pretty!

Ha! I was originally going into the office today but because of a 6AM call, I decided to WFH. Had I gone to the office, I would have worn Angel and Angel Muse because an elevator is required (according to Wendysue).

I have a sample of the Rose waiting to be tried. I was not impressed with Vanilla Bourbon; it’s not bad but with so many better choices, I would not waste any skin time for one that is just average.

Don’t have a situation where I have both the pillar and its flanker (but count me among the Iris Absoloue fans). Instead I’m continuing my How Fall is It? week and pulling out Belle en Rykiel, which is kind of like the lavender version of Iris Absolue, if that makes a bit of sense.
It’s also more fall-into-winter, but it’s kind of gloomy here, so it works.

I’m partially participating in today’s project in that I’ve only got a flanker to wear. My first choice would have been my Stella and Stella Rose Absolute, but I used them all up. So I had to be a little creative, and I ended up choosing Habit Rouge. It may be ‘unofficial’, but it’s a Shalimar flanker.

Everyone stay safe from hurricanes, earthquakes, etc. and have a great weekend!!

I think I’ve only got one set of original and flanker, so I’m wearing Alexander McQueen Kingdom on one wrist and a limited edition on the other (2004, I think). It’s not working too well – the original Kingdom overpowers everything in a 5 kilometre radius 🙂 , and I’ve got a cold, so any nuances are passing me by 🙁

It’s still an interesting exercise. This is the first time I’ve compared them side by side, and I can smell the relationship between them, even through my sniffy nose.

I own no flankers, and I only own one that might possibly have a flanker (azuree). So after overthinking how I could almost participate in the project, I just sprayed on Guerlain Derby (current version). A good choice, it turns out; air conditioner at work was off.

I was going to participate today by wearing Omnia and a flanker. But when I pawed through the sample pile the only flanker I turned up was Omnia Jade, which I just couldn’t bring my self to wear. So I bagged the Omnia idea and just went with No. 19 edt instead.

So, so late to this party. And I can’t say that I actually participated; I’ve had a cold all week and can’t smell a thing, so…..

But if I had, I would have had Estee Lauder White Linen (vintage!) on one wrist and the flanker Pure White Linen Light Breeze (surely they could have made the name longer) on the other. The vintage White Linen is big and bold with plenty of aldehydes and florals. PWLLB is a bit citrusy, a bit green, and very prettily floral. It’s nowhere near as memorable as White Linen, but it’s a good “no-brainer” scent, the kind you’d grab and give yourself a quick spritz before you walk out the door, knowing it would be suitable just about anywhere.

I had and wore them both…and agree the Light Breeze was so pleasant and a no brainer whereas the original could be challenging in tight quarters if overdone (which is exactly how I used to wear it!!!! Don’t ever get in an elevator with me-LOL!)

I’d have liked to try Baiser Vole/Baiser Vole Essence, but I only have a bottle of the Essence, and my sample of the original BV was dry. So I was left with only one option: L de Lolita Lempicka and L de Lolita Lempicka Coral Flower. They don’t have very much in common, except that both are fairly sweet. I was afraid they would clash, but the combination was pleasant enough. I tend to wear Coral Flower in the summer. It smells like sugared grapefruit to me, but with something odd and inedible and a little like bug spray (the driftwood?) underneath it. It was a blind buy, because I like the bottle so much. (A charm with my initial picked out in seed pearls! Frosted blue glass! My little-girl heart is melted every time I see it.) I hadn’t worn the original L in a while, and I’d almost forgotten how much I like it, with its warm, sweet (but not candy-like) vanilla, underlaid with a well-judged amount of cinnamon and a hint of something herbal that I assume is from the immortelle.

Fun community project, and for once I checked on Monday to see what it would be, instead of waiting until the last minute and drawing a blank, or checking the night before and being paralyzed with indecision, or having a plan but completely forgetting it was Friday. (I may be a little scattered lately.) Even when I don’t post, I always read about what everyone else wore, although I sometimes keep it to read offline at a later date. (I have a super-cheap cell phone plan.) Occasionally I mean to post a response to something, but by the time I have the Internet access and some time, I’ve forgotten where and to whom.

Which is to say: If you, dear reader, are the person who was looking for “an airy tuberose,” I have a suggestion for you. Fragrance Republic 01/02, Vapeur de Tubereuse, is indeed a vaporous, ethereal, possibly kind of wimpy tuberose. (As it turns out, that’s how I prefer my tuberose.) The list of notes sounds a little heavy, but it really is a light, summery perfume.

And “they” are “identicons”, which are assigned to people who didn’t go to Gravatar and upload an image. An option, if you like yours, is to turn it into an image and go upload it at Gravatar in case they change them again — or, of course, you can find any other image you like (even just a flat color) and go upload it there.
