Friday scent of the day 6/24

Posted by Robin on 24 June 2016 344 Comments

Pantone Green Orange

Friday! And we're doing (ironically, sorry, and our usual prohibition on political discussion stands) A House Divided. Our community project for today: wear two fragrances from the same house, but don't layer (one on each wrist, or whatever). Thanks to Lisa D for the suggestion!

I'm wearing Parfum d’Empire Azemour Les Orangers and Parfum d'Empire Corsica Furiosa. They wear quite nicely together!

Reminder: on 7/1, wear a fragrance by Olivia Giacobetti, if you have one.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2016, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Rien and Rien Intense. They are quite well behaved together. Predictably I prefer the original, but Intense is very, very good as well. Both are great if you want to keep focused.

This just got me thinking about wearing multiple flankers in the same way – not layered – and then I thought about Angel and shuddered. I’m glad Rien works well in this case.

I briefly thought about wearing two of the Angel flankers, the leather and the 2013 liqueur de parfum, and then I realized I might not survive the experience. There are limits.

I once wore Angel and A*Men simultaneously, for science (well, a review). I’m relatively unscathed 🙂

Layered Angel and Alien – they were surprisingly well-behaved together. Relatively speaking, of course. 😉

I’m wearing Angel on the right and Angel muse on the left. And I smell great – but on the other hand, I’m not at the office. It’s midsummer in Sweden, so it’s a holiday, and the both Angel are very festive 🙂

I went a little crazy with this project: I’m wearing 4 of my 4160 Tuesdays samples! On one arm: Urura’s Tokyo Cafe (raspberry roses and violets) and Tart’s Knicker Drawer (Spicy amber floral that’s not nearly as raunchy as its name).

On the other arm: Lady Rose Lion (unique rose chypre) and Goddess of Love and Perfume (very fruity fruity chypre).

    I smell like everything today!

And I ended up in Anthropologie on the way to the train. Bought some bar soap on sale-cardamom and coffee. Mmm.
Also, PSA, they have Jardains d’Ecrivains Orlando & Gigi on sale for $59.00 (I have them on each hand now). Orlando is the more interesting of the 2 but I don’t need either.

I was thinking of doing Chanel, but went with Ormonde Jayne instead: Ta’if and Osmanthus.
Really glad it’s Friday. Even though it was a short week for me, I still haven’t entirely recovered from vacation. Will be doing lots of snoozing this weekend and hopefully kicking my butt back in gear for next week aka my busy week because… reports *sigh*. I’ve actually been trying to get a head start and slowly, worked on some of them this week.

I’m at my in-laws this morning, making it easier to make a morning eye appointment, but with very limited perfume resources. Wearing Azemour and Equistris and being thankful that I know my optometrist well enough to tell him to shut up if he tells me I stink. The Equistris is winning in the sillage department, but Azsmour is putting up a fight. I smell…interesting. Hope the waiting room isn’t crowded.

I love both of those, but wouldn’t want to wear them together. I think Azemour would work quite well with Fougère Bengale or Eau de Gloire or Iskander.

I was thinking of wearing Azemour with Cuir Ottoman or Eau de Gloire but forgot to re-pack my overnight stash. The nice lady who does the ocular pre-testing was choking, so I imagine I smell atrocious 😳 I’m familiar enough with both fragrances that I distinguish one from the other or else I think I would be suffering.

I recently rediscovered samples of a couple of high-end Guerlains, so that seemed like just the thing for today. On the one hand (my right): Arsène Lupin Voyou, a big yummy masculine sandalwood with a bright fresh top. On the other: Vega, a big explodey aldehydic floral (more like Clinique Wrappings than the Chanel No. 5 it’s often compared to). If you let someone smell both and told them Voyou was Vega Pour Homme, they’d believe you, because the two share some indefinable DNA (and also quite a bit of sandalwood).

I never would have noticed the family resemblance if I hadn’t worn them side by side. I would love to smell a unisex cross between them.

I went to our shiny new Saks the other day (in Houston) and at the fancy new Guerlain counter, the dedicated sales associate told me, “Oh, Liu? It’s the exact same as Chanel No 5. If you like Chanel no 5 but want it in a different bottle, you should buy Liu.” Ehm, what?

Well, in fairness, they ARE pretty similar. There’s not much doubt that Liu was based on No. 5. But they are NOT the same! Bad salesperson!

I’m not sure if I cheated on this one or not as mine are meant to be layered – I’m in Jo Malone – Carrot and Fennel on my arms and Nasturtium & Clover everywhere else. I really like the carrot – that one lasts all day and wafts a pretty iris scent – first wearing of the Nasturtium & Clover.

    FM purple flowers…
On my left, En Passant, which, in spite of me dumping half my sample vial on my arm, has passed on already. Lovely while it lasts but so fleeting!

On my right, the perennial favorite, Iris Poudre! So pretty, I wore my little dress with a floral print to match. It has both purple and pink Iris, as well as something that could be construed as lilacs.

I feel all put together. These Friday assignments are genius!

Wearing Au Dela and Seyrig, as I continue making my way through the Bruno Fazzolari sample pack. Au Dela is ravishing, and Seyrig is very crisp. Tomorrow is the big day – taking my niece out for her first bottle of perfume, and afternoon tea at the Drake Hotel. I’m really excited, and can’t wait to see what she picks. Also might pick up a little something for myself – I don’t usually shop at brick and mortar stores and am looking forward to the experience.

Tabac Blond on the left arm, Or et Noir on my right.

I smell insanely beautiful, albeit seasonally inappropriate.

It’s a shame how they’ve destroyed these classic fragrances, and I”m so glad I splurged years ago, even though I really couldn’t afford it.

So I took inspiration from Criesandwhispers and went with A La Nuit on the right and Fille de Berlin on the left. Fille de Berlin is definitely winning the sillage contest.

This project made me realize that I habitually bump my wrists together after application. Stopped myself just in time!

Diors of our Lives: A House Divided. Episode 5.

The story so far: Fève Délicieuse, haunted by learning she was closely related to Vintage Homme, has abandoned him and turned her back on the position she inherited from previous partner Granville and which his sister Eau Noire had originally stolen from Dune Dior. (That’s clear, right?). Now read on.

Vintage Homme, alone and desolate, has a terrible secret. Up front, he is all manly Iris and herbs. But in the privacy of the dry down, he flutters about in the base notes of his dear departed Fève. Looking for a partner to back him up, his only choice is the disgraced Dune Dior. But sadly, Dune is no better suited to the support role than he was to the lead. Exhausted by the strain, and facing a security investigation (at CDG airport screening), the luckless Vintage Homme blow his last drops out in the airport concourse and dies (rather soon, I’m afraid)..

And thus fell the House of Dior, for a house divided against itself cannot stand. The End.

Just bought an older bottle of No. 5 edc I found at an antique store. Not sure of the vintage (pre-1981 is all I can figure out), but it smells LOVELY! Every formulation I’ve tried of this one so far has been wonderful–seems a shame to discontinue any of them. Hope the SA is mistaken.

Pretty sure She-ra’s referring to the Exclusif called Eau de Cologne (seems like Chanel has a habit of threatening to discontinue some of the Exclusifs–last time it was La Pausa).
The edc is my favorite iteration of no 5, don’t know exactly when they stopped producing it. The drydown is heaven!

I was talking about Lucien Lelong Sirroco last week, how it was was almost like Shalimar except for a delicious gingerbread heart and a dusting of oakmoss. Then I mused that it would probably be like layering Shalimar and Mitsouko. So today I did the unthinkable….

Modern Shalimar parfum on my arms, Mitsouko EdP from the 00’s on my chest. Hear me roar.

Writing from San Francisco, and I didn’t pack two scents from the same house in my little carry-on friendly baggie. But I may be able to do the challenge later as I just discovered that the friend whose couch I’m crashing on lives all of two blocks from Tigerlily Perfumery – so excited to check it out!

San Francisco has been beautiful, and the food amazing. I highly recommend getting the Rebel Within (an asiago muffin with a soft-boiled egg baked inside of it) at a place called Craftsman and Wolves on Valencia Street and if you can handle your spice, Mission Chinese is *glorious* (seriously one of the best meals I’ve ever had.)

    Hope everyone is well!

San Francisco really is a good eating town! I recommend, if you make it up to North beach, stopping in at Tomasso’s Italian restaurant. I had amazing pasta with clams, and Mr. Spicebomb had meatball pizza. Both delicious!

My House Divided for today’s project is Pacifica. I’ve done a symmetrical split and am wearing Sandalwood on my wrists and Persian Rose on the crooks of my elbows. They seem to be cooperating nicely.

    Hi guys! Am back!

    1) Went to a talk by Alain de Botton last night as a way to get back into life. 20 years ago(!!!!) I went to a talk with de Botton when I was a teenager, and he had a head full of fine fairy like brown hair and a sharp wit. Now, the hair is mostly gone, but the wit is sharper, keener, more sensitive.

    2) Have on a drop of Bois des Iles and Coromandel. Both are wonderful, with Bois being warmer and sweeter than Coromandel elegant crispness. But you can totally tell they are from the same family. I think Coromandel has more staying power.

Hello Ede 97005! De Botton just has a new novel out, hasn’t he? I think I’ve read most of his books without meaning to as they are clever and comfortable at the same time, if that makes sense. Sarah Bakewell’s How to Live: Essays on Montaigne is another philosophy book i really enjoyed.

The new novel is called The Course of Love, which de Botton signed last night, but lecture was about relationships, the modern idea of love, and how romanticism can in some ways kill loving relationships. it was a brilliant hour. In person he is very comfortable and clever, so his voice really does carry through!

Sniff off! Actually, maybe not, as that’s what I call an arm-by-arm comparison of two similar perfumes, e.g. a battle of the roses, etc. Today, though, it’s ELO’s Rien vs Vierges et Toreros.

I have to admit defeat with the latter: I have worn it a few times, but have finally admitted that I do not want to smell like machine oil. It’s now been taken off the top of my dresser and put in the purgatory of the living room trade-away shelf. Rien, after its usually shouty first hour, is now being commanding but ladylike.

Since it is a day off, I ended up waking up at noon and I still haven’t gotten in the shower yet. But I think I will wear Sarrasins after my shower then when that wears off I will wear De Profundis or Iris Silver Mist.

Splitting headache this morning mostly but not entirely gone now, so my house divided might be a mistake, but in honor or Hiram Green’s new perfume I’m wearing Voyage and Shangra La. The former is winning the sillage battle, so the distinctiveness of the latter is missing. I might take a shower and move on to something lighter later today.

    Puredistance, a house divided.
    SOTD = Black
    SOTD = White

OMG, I just realized I stayed on theme with colors as well. Extra points!

Voluptuous White clobbered Peppery Black from the get-go. I used 1 spritz of each. I know Puredistance is much maligned for its cost and while I agree it’s expensive, don’t let that stop you from trying it. If you end up liking / loving it, I’m sure you’ll find a way to obtain more (***see gift-receiving occasion above***).

I have friends on each side of the British issue so I am wearing Swiss Andy Tauer’s Le Maroc pour Elle on the left and Incense Rose on the right. They work well together. Willow the rescue dog had to be crated this morning because I needed to go out. I came home to find she had pulled one wall of the crate down with her teeth and escaped, tried to climb the bookcase, and trapped herself in the closet. It has not been a restful day.

I don’t know which is harder in terms of organisational skills: leaving a new dog home alone or trying to shower with a new baby in the house. Both seem to require the skill of being in two places at once.

Kyoto and Wonderwood . Very nice.
I’m thinking of blind buying Atelier cologne vanille insensee cologne absolue as my replacement vanilla ( after draining ….finally…Un Bois Vanille ) as I can get it in NZ so reasonably cheap. I read Kevin’s review but was wondering how others experience the ‘vanilla’ as I’m not sure if it is the dominant note. Thanks for the other suggestions of Carthusia and Tom Ford.

It is actually equally vanilla and amber. I am not particularly an amber lover, but it is quite an interesting perfume. Atelier cologne manages to have this quality with a number of their perfumes, when I want to say: “Well, I am actually not a …. lover, but here it does smell interesting in this combination”.

This is a very late reply but Kanuka, if you’re there and if you’re familiar with Avon Soft Musk circa early 90s, this is what I finally recognized as what Vanille Insensee reminded me of….

Vanille Insensee has an airy lift that balances the vanilla. It is not at all a vanilla cake smell. I think of it as “deliciously inedible.” I enjoy it every time I wear it.

For what it’s worth, I have a decant of Un Bois Vanille, and I just can’t wrap my head around it. I haven’t tried enough fragrance from Serge Lutens to figure out why it doesn’t work for my nose. I keep trying though.

It (UBV) seems overly “thick” to me, like a lotion that moisturizes just fine, but has an unpleasant texture.

Vanille Insensee smells like sweet cardboard to me. Quite pleasant, actually, but like the first dozen or so of the Atelier Colognes, it lasts less than an hour on me. (Musk anosmia, most likely.) I’m partial to Yves Rocher Vanille Noire, which is not sweet/gourmand at all in my opinion. It’s not very long-lived either, but it’s very affordable. L’Artisan Vanille Absolument is another nice one if you like a woody vanilla, and Caron pour Un Homme is vanilla/lavender, and ironically the scent that made me realize that lavender was not just for men.

Yay, Friday! No battles, fragrance or otherwise, for me today. Simply taking time to breathe deep and smell the flowers.

    House = L’artisan Parfumeur
    Left SotD = Oeillet Sauvage
Right SotD = La Chasse aux Papillons

I feel very French floral. 😀

I briefly considered a couple of possible combos from my collection (AG Ninfeo Mio and Songes, Parfum d’Empire Wazamba and Ambre Russe) and realized just how badly this project could go!

I have Andy Tauer’s L’air du desert Marocain on one arm and his Lys du Desert on the other. Plenty of “Tauerade” in both, LADDM seems denser and drier and LDD more airy (and of course, floral).

There’s nothing like a pool afternoon with the grandkids to put life – and the world – in perspective.

A lover of all things ‘pickle,’ granddaughter swoons with delight at the pickle potato chips I brought along as part of lunch.

She: Whoever created this should win the Nobel Prize!

    Me: For which category? Chemistry?

She (triumphantly): For peace! Make pickles, not war!

Dinner will be lemonade and pizza and ice cream under the stars at our Friday night summer symphony concert in our nearby park.

For this picture perfect summer day to remember, I’m wearing EL Pure White Linen and Pure White Linen Pink Coral.

I went with L’Artisan Traversee du Bosphore on my torso, and Tea for Two on my limbs. For a moment, I got a lovely blast of apple pie, and then it settled into something. Not quite so magical, but very pleasant. I’m relieved it stayed below 90 today, because TdB is mostly cotton candy and leather on me.

Tea for Two will also be my Olivia Giacobetti scent for next Friday, when I will be leaving for vacation. My parents decided they wanted a family road trip instead of a party for their 50th anniversary, so we (me, my parents, my sister, my nephews, and the youngest nephew’s father) are going to Yellowstone, Mount Rushmore, and to visit cousins in Wyoming and Iowa. I am looking forward to it and dreading it in roughly equal proportions. Will be back to read everyone else’s picks later. Have a lovely weekend, everyone!

That sounds like fun! When we were younger, my hub’s entire family (six siblings and children plus grandparents) used to rent condos together in VT. Sometimes we’d go in different directions during the day, but we’d all come together at night for a wonderful meal. We had a great time and I hope you do to. I have wonderful memories of those vacations with my in-laws.

From a stay in a Crown Plaza, products from Temple Spa that have disappointingly similar scents. I’m wearing Quietude “calming mist” (they clearly saw me coming) and AAAHHH! balm for feet and limbs. Package also included REPOSE “resting cream”, a pre-bedtime moisturizer. Listed EOs are lavender, artemisia, celery seed, lemongrass, clove, citruses, rosemary, thyme, patchouli and vetiver. It certainly is calming. I may need to seek that calming mist out.

Haven’t read comments yet, but Sweetwater, how is your house hunt/offer going? We have done most inspections, been approved for mortgage, and are still negotiating repairs. Trying to stay open to the possibility of walking away. I don’t care if she is a single mother, if she’s making $14,000 for living in a house for 3 years, she needs to fix a few things.

Unrelated to today’s theme, but I was wondering if anyone had any experience with the website PerfumeSamplesAndDecants.com? They offer decants of a couple perfumes I’ve wanted to try in spray form that I have been unable to find through the normal/ more popular sites.

Are they legit? Worth trying out?

    Off-topic – SHOES!

Aargh, I can’t believe how long the checkout line is at DSW! It seems like the entire world is here. I saw two really ugly pairs of shoes on strangers this afternoon which prompted me to stop by DSW to see what’s “in” at a discount:

Pair 1 – Platform flip flops with Charlie Chaplin moustache fringes all over the v-straps

Pair 2 – Open-toed sandals with suede strips (like someone cut off part of Pocahontas’ leather jacket and slapped it on a pair of shoes)

So what did I buy? A pair of Croc flats with a band of patent leather-like plastic around the toes part. I will wear these on my cruise for formal nights or whenever I am wearing a dress. I’ll look for a link when I get home and post it. Heh, talk about being defiant!

I wanted a pair of those for my upcoming vacation, as I can’t quite bring myself to wear sneakers with skirts, and know 12 days of pants would drive me nuts. (Skirts are the best, right, my fellow wide-hipped women?) They were too narrow for my terrible feet, though, and I had to settle for a pair of Crocs Alice flats. Not nearly as cute, but still much less goofy-looking than the regular old Crocs I wear whenever I’m not in public.

And I’ve been seeing handbags with that thick leather fringe. It always looks like something meant for a Sixties-themed costume party to me.

I missed the Friday plan so I did it Friday night: Gucci Envy on one wrist and Gucci Rush on the other. I don’t think I was awake for long enough to make a comparison, but upon waking I find the Envy side ladylike and calm and the Rush side still dancing at the disco.
Have fun on vacation, Robin – a gorgeous weekend.
