Tuesday scent of the day 3/1

Posted by Robin on 1 March 2016 397 Comments

bunny

Rabbit rabbit rabbit! It's finally March. A quick reminder: in case you missed it, the meetup poll is still open! What fragrance did you pick for today?

I'm wearing Estee Lauder Sensuous.

Reminder: On 3/4, wear a fragrance from Estee Lauder or Aramis, if you have one.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2016, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I got my samples of Lonesome Rider last night so I’ll be giving it a complete testing today!

I’m enjoying it so far. If I had gotten a blind buy bottle at $75 I wouldnt be unhappy but I’m not sure it’s worth the $135. It’s very simple, cold leather and iris. Certainly cooler and more carefree than Cuir de Russe.

Demeter Honey: stripped-down Miel de Bois, plus baby powder, for some reason. Really nice and wearable.

Overall, it was fun. There’s always a buzz when you’re in a room full of perfume enthusiasts. Was it worth the $25 fee? If the goodie bag is supposed to be “free”, $10 would have been more reasonable. I bad hoped for more perfume theory, followed by practice but it turned out to be more running a family owned perfume company and the thought process behind the different single note perfumes. Since there were no rules to follow, theory-light was appropriate. In any case, 20% off was nice and I took full advantage. I’m composing a guest post (Undina’s blog) so now the heat is on :-)

SOTD is the only Aramis I have – a sample of Calligraphy Rose. It starts with a blast of rose, frankincense and myrrh, and soon they are joined by dry herbs and spices. I love how it smells on this grey rainy day.
This is also the first Aramis fragrance I tried, and it is a lovely introduction to the brand.

I read on Racked that their reporter got there at 7:30 and got in around 9:40. I just couldn’t see anything I needed so much to warrant being quite so nutty. Unless, of course, I was doing it with a friend and we decided it would make a funny story… If I knew I really, really wanted something, I’d make sure to be there at 6 or 6:30 am… Yikes!

I am guilty of buying some samples yesterday on STC for their leap day sale. Good Grief! Must. Sit. On.Hands Thanks to ihaveanidea I got a sample of SL Rose de Nuit. Like I need another rose sample…

For those of you going to the Dipyque sample sale I read this morning online that it is 200 shoppers deep. May the perfume goddesses be with you. .

SOTD is Bogue Maii. I am giving this another try. Its wears masculine on me. I just can’t do this one. Scrubbing this one off. Just awful on me.

Maai was puzzling to me as well. I could not find any tuberose in there to save my life! Instead, it smelled like the coal tar soap my elderly cousin kept in his bathroom – this bizarre juxtaposition of clean and grimy (not animalic).

Today I am trying “Palo Santo” from Carner Barcelona. In my warm hotel room the gourmand vanilla milk notes were prominent, but as soon as I walked out into colder fresh air the spicy wood jumped out. Before I was half way through the day, it was down to a skin scent smelling mostly of vetiver.

Someone with more reasonable skin might enjoy all that morphing, assuming it stayed discernible throughout. For me with my scent-eating variety, I’m glad to have tried it but we don’t have a future together. :^)

Fragrantica reviews are all over the place; it seems different people get radically different results. In my case, all of the phases it went through were low key. Worth a shot if you can get hold of a sample. :^)

Vanilla milk notes sounds fascinating. I’ve been intrigued with the idea of milk notes ever since I read a review of Eau Claire des Merveilles which noted the milky sweet breath of a newborn… (I had a newborn at the time, which made that sound quite pleasant). Nearly 2 years later I still haven’t tried many scents with milky notes!

I like the feature in Fragrantica where you can choose a note and it suggests perfumes that feature it. So if you need something that smells of barbed wire and freckles, you know where to look! :^D

NST has been an education for me – so many different companies making so much stuff! I’ve gone slightly mad getting dozens of samples from left, right and centre. I suppose as midlife crises go, this at least has the advantage of being at the harmless and affordable end of the spectrum. ;^)

I’m jealous of all of you who are experiencing ice and such. It almost got to 80 degrees yesterday in Houston. I long for a true Winter.
Growing up, my grandma wore Youth Dew and I didn’t like it. Now that my fragrance palette has matured, maybe I should give it another go. It gets a lot of love here at NST.

I had to go to the grocery store a few hours ago. It was snowing sideways. Seriously, little chunky icy balls smacked me in the head as I loaded up the car. Then it took me half an hour to drive six miles home. Nothing to be jealous of here.

Youth Dew is always one that has worn me instead of the other way around. Today I did about a spray and a half right in the middle of my ribcage. It wafts up everytime I move but it’s not suffocating like when I spray it on my neck and wrists. It’s much more pleasant this way. Though I’ll admit, I still feel like I’m wearing a grownup’s perfume. Give it a test, you might be surprised. But not today. Maybe next November. It’ll kill you in 80°.

    Adorbz floppy eared bunny!

I enjoy EL Sensuous. Nice scent, Robin.

Today I’m wearing FM L’eau d’Hiver. Love this. Applied about 12 sprays to hopefully make it last up to 3 hours ;-/ Just wish it lasted longer and projected a bit more, esp. since this scent could never been annoying to anyone!

Last eve I received a split of the new MDCI Les Indes Galantes. I was so excited about this one. The first 15-20 are awesome; it’s definitely a cousin to Fendi Theorema. But then if falls apart after 20 minutes and becomes a very close to skin, somewhat bland vanilla scent. Super bummed. Money saved I guess is the silver lining.

Wearing vintage Mitsouko right now. I’m trying to figure out if I want to continue on with it or wash it off and wear Deneuve. I’m not exactly thrilled that I have a day off tomorrow and have to pay a visit to the dentist to get cavities taken care of.

I hope so too. The downside of going to a dental school to have work done is that it takes a very long time to get anything done. Seven visits and now we start getting into the real work. Making molds of my teeth, a cleaning, x-rays, talking over the treatment plans all have their individual visits. I’m hoping that I won’t have to pay much (under $100 please).

Hope it goes well… I just had a filling replaced. I could tell something wasn’t quite right there. It had started to wear away and there was some decay underneath. All in all, it was pretty good as dental visits go. The novacaine did its job but I really wish they could do something about that horrific drill sound! Makes my palms sweat!

This might sound weird but a tattooist once told me that wearing ear plugs (to dull the noise of the needle) seems to reduce the sensation of pain amongst some clients. Maybe the same might be true for dental drills?

SOTD = By Killian Amber Oud. This one rings all my bells, apparently because it is long on amber and short on oud. I bought a decant of this at the LeapDay STC sale.

And my bottle of Lonesome Rider showed up yesterday! Yay! It starts off awfully smokey for me, but quiets down nicely. I think I preferr LADDM, but I will have to do a wrist to wrist comparison over the weekend. Emails headed out to you lovely ladies patient waiting for decants.

I had strep, which turned into the flu, which turned to walking pneumonia, and then full-blown pneumonia. Get plenty of rest and try to enjoy doing absolutely nothing. I adore Trayee and love Bombay Bling! as well. One of the best fruity scents I’ve ever smelled and such a happy one, too. After the initial mango blast it’s actually pretty refined – gently woody and spicy. But definitely not one to blind buy, people’s mileage varies a lot with this one and I completely understand why.

31 Rue Cambon is growing on me–with something to compare it to I can really smell the citrus in the opening. I’d like to try it at the same time as Lyric as well. Coromandel seems to have two faces–sometimes it smells very comforting-chocolate and sometimes has a very vegetable green aspect. I’d like to get a larger decant to give it a really good airing, but since it’s no longer available at decanters I’m not sure what I’ll do–sometimes I adore it and sometimes it reminds me of my brother’s Speedstick deodorant.

I’m in Chergui today and especially enjoyed it on my walk to work as the cool breeze lifted the scent up to my nose. This scent has got to be a masterpiece. It’s just so well done, not overpowering and yet there’s no mistaking the tobacco, honey richness of it.

Happy Tuesday Everyone! Its a zoo at my school today because of voting going on. All the strangers going in and out is a little nerve-wrecking. My SOTD is Estee Lauder’s Private Collection: Jasmine White Moss. I am just now realizing how much of a “jasmine” fan I am. I have numerous fragrances where jasmine is the dominant note. I never even realized it until now. Anyway, I hope everyone has a great day! :)

I didn’t know how much jasmine I had either until I wore Lush’s Lust. After that, if jasmine is in a scent it’s all I can smell. My Olene and Diorissimo are almost unwearable now. :(

I found a vial of Caleche parfum amongst my Hermes samples, and it is so beautiful and rich! Added a spritz of the EDT (have a bottle of that one) on my hair for good measure.

Love rabbits…we have a big fat one who peeks into our empty raised vegetable beds. She’s probably going to have little ones soon.

Springish day today so I hauled out Oriza L. Legrand CHYPRE MOUSSE and my outfit matches it perfectly if I may say so myself!

Chypre Mousse is smokey earthy green topped off by roasted chestnuts. LOVE!

I don’t usually try to match my outfit to my perfume or the other way around. Today, I am wearing a brown pants suit, army green crew neck shirt with satin piping and brown/gold/black swarovski crystal earrings and wraparound bracelet.

No Diptyque sale for me and just the thought of 200 people in line scared the perfume molecules out of me.

That is such an adorable picture, you have made my day, thank you!

I fear I may be a fragrance danger zone today – I had the morning out and tried a few things I have wanted to for a while, which means currently my left hand smells of Amarige, right wrist Marc Jacobs original perfume, my right hand is Flowerhead and right wrist is Lys 41. No one has fainted yet but I must be pushing it.
The upside is wow is Lys 41 stunningly beautiful – a bit late to the party on that but wow. It also seems somewhat reminiscent of Songes – or is that just me?

Funny, I was just thinking that I got more vanilla out of Songes! I like them both, though. (And my Songes sample is edp, which might be heavier on the base than the edt. Or maybe it’s aged – it’s several years old and very dark orange.)

    Crazy morning is crazy!

First day of reports and not even an hour into the work day when we’re evacuated from the building due to a bomb threat next door. An hour was wasted as we milled around the parking lot for the building next to ours. Our building is connected to a school for the disabled and apparently a disgruntled employee decided to call in a mock bomb threat.

Everyone was ok and we just joked around that someone REALLY did not want to do their reports for the month.

All is well though. The boss declared a WFH when we were allowed back in the building and I totally forgot my laptop charger so I’m on mega crunch time to get stuff sorted in the next 4 hours.

Quick check in – SOTD is Pure White Linen – I have a mini I got from a lovely NSTer in a freebie meet.
Hope everyone has a good day!

Both are lovely, but the Osmanthe Yunnan is rather special, and has a whiff of the plumeria blossoms that grew around our front porch when I lived in Hawaii as a little girl. 15 mls of this may need to come live with me…

Rabbit, rabbit, rabbit. Hope it counts if it’s the first thing you type because the first thing I said was, “ow! Newburg, what?” It would be very useful if I could set the feline alarm time. They are very effective as they don’t seem to have a snooze button. I could make a fortune marketing The Alarm That Won’t be Ignored*
I dodged the decant sale bullet by getting distracted and forgetting to complete my order until it was too late :( guess I’ll buy a new starter for my husband’s truck instead. The perfume would have been much more fun (I have small hands so guess who will be lodged beneath the wheel with oil in her hair).
SOTD is leftover Memoir from yesterday. I’m anticipating a couple of deliveries so I expect I’ll be testing stuff later.

But she’s so cute! I miss having a dog, but our yard isn’t secure. Wet dog nose in the ear is certainly an equally effective alarm.
I also wish I could catch a video of Newburg with his ping-pong ball. He seems to have an occasional problem with depth perception and the little white gloves waving about as the ball plonks him in the nose never gets old. Turns out food was not the issue and he had lost his ball behind the hi-fi this morning and needed human hands for retrieval.

      …I miss having a cat!

My sweet Silvia died at age 20, three years ago, and we decided not to get another cat for the foreseeable future. We found out our youngest is mildly allergic to cats, and while it wasn’t reason enough to get rid of a cat, it was reason enough not to get another one until Taz (now 15) is out on his own.

We have a dog, and that’s great, but it’s not the same.

Oh, I’m sorry, it is so hard to lose a cat after so long. We had two who lived to 18 and 20 respectively, and it took quite a while to get over their deaths enough even to consider kittens — and of course, if you have a child with an allergy, that makes it impracticable as well as emotionally difficult. We’ve got two more now, brother and sister, and they are a wonder. It seems important to live with nonhuman creatures, somehow, or at least in their near proximity, which it sounds like you certainly do!

I’m unscented today so as to better sniff the pink jasmine (Jasminum polyanthum) that is beginning to bloom in my neighborhood. It is deliriously and deliciously fragrant. The “eyes rolled in the back of my head, breathing deep until I see spots” type of fragrant. And strangely, this year as I sniff pink jasmine I keep thinking of Juicy Fruit gum.

The Lauder scents this week remind me of the EL perfume minis I gave away over the years. Do you remember when EL gifts with purchase were abundantly generous and almost always included a small glass spray bottle of perfume? Not a plastic sample, but a beautiful little bottle. Do they still do that? White Linen, Cinnabar, Beautiful, and Youth Dew were most common. I almost never wore them so I gave them to friends and co-workers or left them in the ladies room at work where they would disappear. I hope they were loved. ;)

Some days I do that- the most plain soap (or I will scrub down with a bit of olive oil, ancient Roman style) so I can better appreciate blooming flowers. In my neighborhood, the early cherries and plums are starting to bloom, bulb flowers are coming up and the air smells WONDERFUL.

I once obtained an EL “House of Fragrance” 12-mini set from a secondhand shop– deeply marked down because one mini (Beyond Paradise) was missing. I love those tiny bottles and still cherish them. I love that you secret-gifted them to your colleagues!

SOTD is Scherer because I was in a rush and couldn’t find a Lauder. Yesterday I sprayed myself with EL Knowing, knowing that I liked it. Fail. I used to like it, but something has happened. Very disappointing.

Today has been a rollercoaster of scents! I started with a sample of Florabellio. Usually I tend to like most of the Diptyques, but frankly this one was nauseating. And I have no room in my life today for nausea since I *actually* threw up during my workout yesterday! I need a few days before I can feel like that again! So then I showered and tried Musc Monoi. It’s okay I guess, but not really projecting, so then I tried 2 sprays of California Reverie on my other wrist, which is beautiful but I can also barely smell that. I guess my post-super-hot-shower dry skin is just sucking up the scents today! So, I’ll probably end up trying more things today, just gotta figure out what!

Whoa! Insanity is REALLY tough- you should have started out with T25, then Insanity! You basically doing HIIT 6 days a week (you really should do it 2-3 times a week) Take breaks between days, watch the burpees (they can screw up the shoulders if you are not careful) and eat a very light snack before hand, not a full meal.

You know I’ve actually done Insanity before, so I knew what I was in for. I am usually fairly active and fit since i play in tons of volleyball tournaments and leagues but I haven’t done much since November (and got pregnant and miscarried in that time), which has just left me apparently in much worse shape than I expected. But summer volleyball season is coming up so I gotta get back to it!

Happy super Wednesday! I was waiting in the chemist yesterday so had another spray of Poison Girl and this time was struck by how harsh the opening orange note is. I didn’t notice that the first timeI tried it…maybe as I had just come out of Lush so had numb nose issues. Also, the dry down was somehow muddy on me as if the orange and vanilla were fighting it out with coconut musk / sharp sandalwood.
I sprayed Coco Noir on my other arm and I think that its beautifully blended nature served to highlight the gnawing edge of the Poison Girl. I needed this comparison in order to ‘see’ the Poison. Just realised in writing that that I still see scents…
Furthermore…in summing up….my son’s medicine seemed to echo some of PG’s notes. But…I’d still rather have a poison flanker than a new grape cordial perfume.

Happy march! Only two more weeks of winter!

SOTD: 1000 by Patou. This is such a lovely, shimmering, herbally scent, very crisp but welcoming and sticks nice and close to skin. This perfume is a Portland walk in misty fog, with moss and herb all about. I am wearing this layered with Lords of Misrule shower gel, which meshes perfectly.

OOTD: Old- very old- yellow silk blouse, wide blue cotton trousers, jaunty blue silk scarf, black pumps.

They are really, really similar. Almost to the point where I wonder if the EDP is really EDP.

Both of them are the little spray bottles directly from Diptyque though so I assume each is marked accurately but boy they are close…

It is kind of disappointing b/c I really love to smell and compare the differences between concentrations and ponder as I sniff and I don’t have much to ponder here.

Yes, the edp of L’Ombre choked me out, which is a first for a Diptyque. The tomato leaf note was overwhelming.

        • Amy says:
          1 March 2016 at 8:35 pm

I am very interested in this experiment, as sometimes with Diptyque I find the EDT lighter in a way that I enjoy. (Usually I am after the EDP, as I seem to be one of those people with scent eating flesh.) So I’m sorry to hear there was not much difference here!

Morning, everyone. The first two days of teaching have been hectic, but loads of fun, and That Lecture even got smatterings of laughter and desultory applause! Phew…I can still do this! And now it’s Wednesday-work-at-home day. Eggzellent.

I’m greeting the sun in Ostara, for no better reason than that I saw the pretty yellow box on the shelf. I like this: it’s a B/B+ perfume for me, not a deep love, but a welcome, well-liked member of my perfume community. It doesn’t have particularly marked personality or flair, nor say anything new about the world, but that’s OK. Its very non-controversial presence is exactly the point for me, especially on a day when I want to achieve a lot.

Be well and safe everywhere, NSTites.

Congrats to your successful lectures! About Ostara: I got a little panicky because I heard it had been discontinued after only eight months of production, so I bought a FB unsniffed. Wish I hadn’t, because I don’t get it. Everybody raves about it, so I wonder what I am missing… will continue sniffing it and see if it grows on me.

Isabel, I know what you mean–when I first smelt Ostara, I thought, “Huh! Is that it?” But it kind of crept up on me: I think it’s an oddity, because it’s quite strong, but not especially moving and has powerful notes but doesn’t have much to say. Ever had a boss who occupies a really important position, but for the life of you, you can’t see how s/he was ever appointed? Doesn’t appear to be because of talent, experience, or drive and vision. I think Ostara is a bit like that boss: does a perfectly adequate job on the day, but isn’t especially gifted. I put the recent Alaia in the same category, actually: nice enough, but not outstanding

Agree completely, for both Ostara and Alaia! (Although at least with the perfume, I’m glad others are getting more enjoyment from it than I. If only the boss side of the analogy could be so redeemed!)

SOTD is Amazone….very lovely, good for an almost spring day. The only Lauder fragranced thing I have is a pleasures lotion from a GWP from last spring which I never wore. Don’t think I ever wore Pleasures, so I will give it a go on Friday. I went through a whole bottle of Beyond Paradise quite a few years ago, it was a gift, and I kinda liked it, but reminds me of a (bad?) romance with a guy I really liked, only to find out 2 months in he was engaged, the snake, LOL. Did not go far enough to really hurt, was more insulted that he made me the other woman, ended that on the phone as soon as I found out. (Shakes head, men, WTH?)

I assume the reason you went through a whole bottle is because it shattered on the ground after you threw it at his head?

LOL…wish I would have, but I never saw him again to throw anything at him…did hear he got married, so she never found out about the snake. Still can’t wear Beyond Paradise, but I like many other fumes so much better, so , no great loss, of the fume, or the guy.

Very late to the blog today! It’s been one of those days, but it’s finally getting back to a normal vibe! :)

SOTD: Estee Lauder Brasil Dream. Got this bottle via Ebay for less than $20 last year, and it’s not bad! It’s a bit too heavy handed for my taste, but I sprayed a itty bitty amount and I’m enjoying it in a small dosage..

It’s March first and we are in the middle of a snow storm here. The worst road conditions I have seen in a long time. After a horrid day at work I made it home to now worry about my children getting home. I just want to sit and cry. I am wearing Coco today. On a positive note, my Josie Maran sugar scrub arrived and I will be using it soon to wash the day away. Sorry about the whining.

I am so sorry for your day. I hope the kids come home safe. We are expecting a big snow storm tonight here too but it is not here yet.

Coco has the power to transform whining into a righteous growl! Hope everyone gets home safely and you can relax in a warm bath or shower, as you deserve.

I’m so sorry about the stupid day. Just in case it makes you feel better, I jealous of your Josie Maran – I want to try her products, but they are difficult to get here.

I just started using her products last year, and I have really noticed an improvement in my skin. I have tried about four of her scented body butters, and have not been disappointed.

I was just cleaning my shoe cupboard and discovered 4 perfume bottles stuffed into my cowboy boots. I must have hidden them there when my mother came to stay at Christmas. I can hear her tut tutting and muttering profligate from here.

Ha! I stand by my original comment. My maternal grandfather died recently, and from the extensive navigation of that between my mother and grandmother, I can tell you–for better or for worse–these mother-daughter dynamics can continue at least ’til you are in your mid-sixties and your mother is 90! For that matter, I’m pretty sure that if my great-grandmother were still with us, it’d be the exact same between her at 115 and my grandmother at 90 :)

Hilarious! Of course there is no way I could hide hundreds of bottles so I just have to grin and bear it. Plus she hoards clothes so she doesn’t have much moral high ground to stand on.

Oh, congrats! That’s so perfect; I’m sure even if just subconsciously, the price is probably what muted my otherwise very favorable reaction to it. A partial bottle would be a great solution!

On this first day of meteorological spring, winter returned with a vengeance, so my SOTD challenge was to find a scent that was warm and comforting on a cold, snowy winter’s day yet would keep alive those thoughts of spring I refuse to relinquish. My choice was La Maison de la Vanille Vanille Sauvage de Madagascar. The sweet warm vanilla touched with incense soothes and hugs the soul while the lavender and geranium notes hint at my garden’s delights if I can just be patient awhile longer . . .

Spring is coming! I have some cardinals nesting near my bedroom window, and they are definitely getting ready for chicks. My garden catalogs are piling up, and the days are getting a bit longer. HANG IN THERE! Your fragrance sounds amazing! :)

We have cardinals year round but in the last few weeks I’ve heard them singing their special mating song and the chirping of the other birds I can’t see burrowed in the thick pine trees is also different, too, so I know they’re also thinking spring!

I received 3 of the LMDLV vanillas a couple of years ago from a perfumista friend who decided she really didn’t care for vanilla fragrances. And I love them, so I’m grateful.

I”m going through perfume guilt. Again. I have so much of it. I know I should just use and enjoy what I have but the STC sale was too much of a temptation for me. I bought a decant of Papillon Salome. 8mls should last me quite awhile. In the meantime I’m still really enjoying that L’air de Rien. It’s up on the dresser so I’m more likely to use it than when it was tucked away in the filing cabinet with all the other bottles. That’s one that I can really over-spray because it is very light and stays that way on me.
The other perfume I’ve re-discovered since returning from India is Parfum Sacre. I just have another STC decant of the EDT latest formulation and it is just so beautiful. I’m really appreciating the subtle spicy rose in it, a real girly perfume for me.
    SOTE: L’air de Rien.
