Monday scent of the day 11/16

Posted by Robin on 16 November 2015 190 Comments

Spring flowers of Montmartre

Another week begins. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Sophia Grojsman's rose-violet, Yves Saint Laurent Paris. "Paris is a nostalgic, grey-blue place and, because the scent is based on roses, Paris is also very much a nostalgic fragrance."1

Reminder: this Friday, 11/20, wear a fragrance from Yves Saint Laurent, if you have one.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Today I’m wearing the very discontinued and very beautiful Cristobal pour homme by Balenciaga. It’s like velvet – so smooth and luxurious. C’mon Balenciaga, bring it back!

My SOTD is Cédrat Intense PdN, crisp and nice.

I had a small bottle of Paris when I was in college that I enjoyed so much. I always want to have more, but it has powerful memories for me, so it’s hard to wear. It is so beautiful though.

For those who find Paris overwhelming in its nostalgia, what would be a good 21st century version? This is for a colleague with a big personality…

I think you might suggest she tries other Rose-violet combo’s. The most lighthearted being Drôle de Rose. Or maybe L’Occitane’s Arlésienne. I find Lipstick Rose a tad too solemn but I know it has fans, and of course the recent Chanel Misia explores a similar theme. (Still haven’t tried it myself). And I think that the Paris flankers are lighter interpretations of the same theme.

2nd Drole de Rose, and yes, some of the flankers were great summery versions.

And btw, Paris was based on an idea from Guerlain Apres L’Ondee, also nostalgic but maybe a bit quieter about it?

Also, L’Occitane’s Rose 4 Reines (sp?) is a total Paris knockoff, and “thinner” too, so it’s easy to wear. I’ve read on reviews that the Aqua di Parma Rosa Nobile is also a Paris knockoff, but I’ve never smelled it, so I don’t know.

I’m wearing Jo Malone Wood Sage & Sea Salt today.

YSL Paris is so lovely! I used to wear it a lot, way back when I used to own 2 or 3 fragrances. When I wear it now, it reminds me of a time when my children were younger. It makes me smile.

SL Daim Blonde today. I love this fragrance, but it almost disappears after about five hours; just wish it had greater longevity. The good news is, with discounters and coupons, it is now a “cheap thrill!” So I may have to purchase a second bottle for the workplace to re-spritz mid-day.

Interesting – I don’t get spice from it. But I just looked at Fragrantica and saw why that might be – it seems that the new version is much less spicy and doesn’t even list a single spice as a note. But now I want to try the original!

On day three of AMouage Epic Woman. It’s one of those perfumes that I wear that I wear for days on end for no reason. I’m about a thrid of my way through a small bottle. At the rate I am going, in the next three months I will have finished my first full bottle! I’m not worried when this one runs out because I have a 3.4 ounce back up.

Encre Noir is great! It saved me from spending too much on Sycamore which is also great. I like vetiver for those days when I need something bracing to keep me going. I think that’s why so many people are drawing to No 19 for “challenging” days.

I had 5ml sample of EN but I found very thin plus it vanished on me within half an hour. I must be anosmic to some of the musk/s in it. I caught a whiff of its wonderful full power for a millisecond only once before it went bzzt again.

Rather annoying to know what you’re missing.

I had a dream last night that my friend decided to buy me a present as a thank you for proofreading her book (which I did last winter). I could pick whatever I wanted from a PERFUME VENDING MACHINE. On top of the machine were tester bottles for all of the perfumes inside. There were very fancy bottles (gold plated and engraved24 Rue Faubourg) and simpler bottles. Behind the rest I found a small bottle with the most gorgeous rare perfume. It was called Gunn #6. My friend put a whole lotta money in the vending machine and I chose the bottle by looking through the window on the front of the machine – the bottles were lined up like candy bars. We reached into the slot beneath to pull out the bottle that fell down, and when I opened the package, the perfume inside was a cheap Chinese knock off called Six Gunn! Gunn #6 was available from the machine but I had pushed the wrong button. It reminded me of all the times when I bought a full bottle of something only to realize it was totally the wrong thing for me. Anyone else have that experience?!

So I had an idea this morning to pick seven perfumes to put out on the dresser and to wear the same one for the day of the week. For example: Monday: Indochine, Tuesday: Ambre Sultan, Wednesday: Santal, etc. Has anyone ever done that?

I’ve had a few very vivid perfume dreams – usually that I am in some old junk/antiques shop, and I find a cupboard or armoire, etc, hiding in the back that is choc full of the most amazing old fragrances with beautiful bottles. My big dream dilemma is how to buy the piece of furniture and get all the fragrances without tipping off the shop owner that I am getting them….It’s kind of funny b/c I’m problem solving in my dreams, like, how do I carry this large piece of furniture out of here without breaking all the bottles, etc.

I’ve had a few “wrong bottle” episodes. Mostly they stem from discovering something interesting about a particular fragrance while I was attempting to develop my nose. I’d buy the bottle, later only to find out that I was happy to be able to discern an accord, enjoy it, have the thrill of learning, etc, but then I really wasn’t that into actually wearing the fragrance. My biggest area for this mistake was honeyed roses, eg, IPDF Miele Rosa, Parfums DelRae Bois des Paradis, etc. Also in the chocolate patchouli arena for frags like Coromandel, Prada (Ambre), Theorema, etc etc…..

That Miele Rosa… I can’t remember how I laid my mitts on a sample of it, but it was surprisingly raunchy on me. Like morning-after sheets, when someone had been wearing a rose body lotion the night before.

I don’t normally get morning after from honey, even though I do know what you mean. Honey becomes very suffocating to me after a while – don’t know why.

Wow, reading through all the scents today I realized I really have a LOT more sniffing to do. I didn’t recognize half of these!

Mega busy today as office manager with two newbies, so I’m giving them tutorials – and fielding those annoying employees who tend to think that my job is their job and yet they have no idea what they are doing so they come to me with over 9000 questions that are not even all that important/applicable. Ugh.

It’s a Monday, clearly. I’m frazzled (not too much, just more annoyed) and didn’t even prepare my lunches for the week. I really need to discipline myself more Sunday nights.

Wearing the last of my 34 St Germaine decant today. I really like this one, but don’t think it’s worth a FB – maybe a bigger decant though.

That always happens to me. Last time it happened, I was bidding on a vintage bottle of Amouage Gold. You know the one, the mosque bottle. I just missed getting it by 2 seconds and someone outbid me by just a dollar. I always seem to bite on ones that are listed at $5 or $10 and then outbid.

I’ve got two sick kitties, so I put no thought into what I’m wearing. Grabbed the first thing, which happily turned out to be Youth Dew Amber Nude. My cats have upper respiratory viruses, and while one is sneezing and blowing his nose, the other is totally congested and her eyes are producing a lot of gunky discharge, to the point that one of them is getting glued shut.

So glad you are wearing Paris – for Paris. I might try to do that, Yvresse and Opium the rest of this week. Wearing Marrakech by Aesop from a sample today – almost entirely disappeared now. I was wondering if it was at all like Noir Epices and while pleasant enough it’s fair to say Noir Epices wins the elegant oriental battle there.

I preferred Rose of No Man’s Land to Rose Noir. The thing is, I expected more from the Rose Noir, maybe due to the name? But it definitely wasn’t “noir” enough for me. It reminds me of Stella In Two Peony quite a bit. This is to say, I didn’t find it terrible, but I definitely won’t be purchasing a bottle, it just didn’t do much for me. I did, however, enjoy Rose of No Man’s Land. While it’s nothing ground-breaking as well, I really found it to be quite refined and elegant. I would wear it for sure, and if I came upon a bottle I’d be quite delighted.

Molton Brown Londonium. The opening is like a better quality, more nuanced Fahrenheit and the dry down is absolutely delicious, musky and sweet in a very balanced and unisex way. Nice! Very chilly this morning, and instead of getting up and exercising, I actually dawdled in bed with a huge cup of masala chai, made with almond milk. Finally wrassled out of bed with minutes to spare. Old draped TSE cashmere sweater – but still super soft and glam- high waisted jeans, high heeled short boots and just went with my hair out in an Afro.

Decided on Coromandel. The scent is perfect for a chilly, damp morning, and i wanted something a little French, a little bit of a nod to that glorious and messed poly-ethnic country that suffered so this weekend.

Hello, all. I missed NST while I was away: I had not realised how much it has become part of my routine to read all your posts and jotting a few lines myself. It’s great to see you all again, if as it were.

I’ve spent the last few days thinking about the nature of love and not-love and other Big Things of That Sort–visits to my mother-in-law have a way of pushing me back into my inner resources. Anyway, the upshot of all this deep cerebration is a craving for Silences. At the moment it is wrapping me in a cool green cocoon of introspection and matches my mood just exactly perfectly, because I seem to be more thoughtful than talkative at the moment. That probably won’t last. Not long, anyway!

What do you think of the Nirvana Body Oil? When I’ve tested it at Sephora, I’ve had to shove my face to my wrist more than usual, and though I love how it smells, I think the oil just doesn’t project enough on my scent-eating skin. What’s your experience?

Yes, minimal projection. I like it (and I like the fact I got it 20% off) but I wouldn’t repurchase. I am making it work by using it as a layering agent and it has worked very well in that capacity. I’ve tried with several perfumes and it does give an added depth, especially to more diaphanous scents like Safran Troublant. So, not sorry I purchased. I’m like Tim Gunn: “make it work!”

Been at the hospital in support of my brother pretty much full time since Thursday so scent free. It is strangely comforting reading all your scent notes, everything I am familiar with I can vividly imagine just by reading about it. Nice break from the many not-so-pleasant smells around me.
I really miss my perfumes. And my cat. And my bed. Oh ya and my SO :)

Thank you for your kind wishes. He’s battling cancer and has been through two surgeries in three days. Please spare a prayer for him.

Oh, so sorry to hear this! Will definitely send prayers for both of you. I hope there is some comfort for both of you that you can be there for him. It must be incredibly stressful. Take good care of yourself Gi.

Received a second batch of samples, so tried Sideris today. A bit unsure if I like it or not.

Best wishes for speedy recovery to all of you with sick pets and relations. I’ve been offline lately, enjoying the peace and quiet of my last couple of days in the country for the next week or so. Today I’m wearing l’Air de Rien. It’s cool and rainy so we are refinishing my sewing machine cabinet and doing crossword puzzles, occasionally stirring to let kittens in and out. They are all surprisingly unaffected by being little furry sponges.

Started the day in Sutra Ylang and added a spritz of Black Jade be Lubin. Someone mentioned it on Angela’s post today. I can’t tell if this was a good or bad idea as I can’t smell much due to a sinus infection.

Black Jade! THAT was the other thing I keep forgetting to add to my StC wishlist.

Visiting my family with the added bonus of getting to try the swaps that were sent to their address. Started the day in Etro Sandalo, and just spritzed on Vanille/Iris…a nice cozy barrier to the cold.

So late to the party today, but fun to read everyone’s posts all at once. I started out the day in a new perfume oil I picked up at a crafts fair yesterday. It’s called Black Sea and is primarily botanical ambergris with some woody and smoky notes. It’s quite calming and contemplative but without any sweetness so I layered it with L’Ambre des Merveilles. A really nice pairing.
