Thursday scent of the day 10/30

Posted by Robin on 30 October 2014 135 Comments

Alan Cumming

Happy Halloween Eve! What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm wearing Cumming: The Fragrance (really, I think it might be The 2nd Cumming, but I'm not sure. It's a decant). Wouldn't it be way fun if Alan Cumming introduced Downton Abbey, and then stayed to gossip about the characters afterwards? I adore Laura Linney in general but she does not add to my enjoyment of Downton Abbey.*

Reminder: this Friday, 10/31, for Halloween wear your quirkiest or weirdest or spookiest fragrance. The next week, 11/7, we're doing "down the rabbit hole Friday": wear the perfume that turned you into a perfumista (whatever that means to you).

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2014, where I'll try to always have the next six or seven weeks mapped out in advance.

*If you're not in the US, you might not be aware that the PBS channel always has a "host" to provide a brief introduction to shows imported for their Masterpiece series, the idea being that US viewers are too thick to understand what's happening unless someone places it in context for them. They usually cut a few minutes of the show to make time. Alan Cumming currently introduces Masterpiece Mystery; Laura Linney introduces Masterpiece Classic (which includes Downton Abbey).

I just received a sample of Masque Milano Russian Tea. I like it a lot… It’s not as sweet as Tea for Two, and a bit darker and rougher somehow—the birch?—but with a minty opening.

They really cut the show?! How rude! I love TimeTeam, and after being used to the UK version I watched a couple of the US ones, and couldn’t believe how they treated their audience like they were idiots. It was so bad I stopped watching them.

Anyway. Fragrance. This morning was cool and cloudy so I went for PdN Maharanih Intense. It was great until it warmed up then it seemed a bit much.
Tonight is Bois d’Encens. Not sure if I don’t really love it or just can’t find the right weather for it.

They don’t cut it by much as I understand it, but yes, they do cut it!

That is my main complaint about US shows in general, they are more dumbed down than British shows. About to start watching Gracepoint to see how different it is from the UK Broadchurch series.

I tried watching Gracepoint, and just couldn’t deal with whatever our lovely “Doctor” Tennant is doing with his voice. He sounds like John Wayne (or Johnny Cash?) juggling marbles in his mouth. It seems very contrived so it’s affecting my ability to get into his character/the story. I will likely just watch the BBC original and probably enjoy that more.

I liked the original! If Tennant is trying to do an American accent, that might make me nuts. Hugh Laurie can do it, of course 🙂

LOL — I adore Hugh Laurie (was just thinking it’s probably time to rewatch all of Jeeves!) and would almost agree with you except just happened to see a video of him singing Iko Iko earlier this week. Cringe. He is a very talented man but he should not sing Iko Iko.

I’ve been watching Gracepoint and even though I’ve not yet watched the original British version with Tennant, I don’t care for his ‘American’ voice either. I’m also a big fan of Hugh Laurie, but my heart belongs to . . . . Benedict Cumberbatch.

Like the BBC’s “Life” narrated by David Attenborough, that was dubbed with a different script read by Oprah Winfrey. Winfrey is a smart and engaged woman by many measures, but all the reviews panned her reading and script… just too dumbed down. Wouldn’t it have been a pleasure to have an American woman narrate a BBC nature documentary with an intelligent and insightful script!

My heart belongs to Sir David Attenborough, and I was beyond pissed when they felt thay we were so shallow that we would not listen unless a popular American narrated. David Attenborough has spent a lifetime sharing his love of the natural world with us. He is charming, intelligent, thoughtful, and fascinated with the natural world. He has traveled to dangerous places and brought back stories that inspire conservation.

Oprah is intelligent and charitable, but there was too much pseudoscience on her show.

Giving a chance to another LL today with Musc 25. I don’t think I even tested this one before because I’m sure I would remember spraying something that reminds me this much of Avon’s Sweet Honesty (the mid 80’s edition). I completely love it but they still won’t be making a sale. I’ll be scouring the evilbays for a cheap splash of the Avon and maaaaybe picking up a decant of this one day.

OJ Woman is very tenacious on me – the amber woody drydown will last for hours and hours. It’s gorgeous, so even if it’s not lasting long for you, consider yourself lucky and enjoy! A lot of people find the base too strident. I can only wear a very small dab. I love that opening.

Scent of the day is Tabac Blond. It’s the modern parfum and I do like it, but I wish it were darker/dirtier/more leathery. I’ve never experienced it in vintage, and perhaps it’s for the best… though I am extremely curious.

don’t you get an edited version in the US? I get these on dvd for my mother, and always make sure she is getting the UK version. I have to say I’m not entirely sure what gets edited. It’s primetime Sunday night here, so they keep it clean.

Oh, just I meant I thought you got a much more heavily edited version, not a few mins chopped for intro. I guess that’s what they mean by US version. After ads an episode is probably only 40 minutes at the very most.

That was the rumor early on (started by Daily Mail), but the producers say no, the time disparity is more because ITV shows DA with commercial breaks. PBS shows a couple sponsor bits at the beginning, then the brief hosted intro, then no breaks during the show itself, which runs 90 minutes.

This morning, I showered with Lush’s So White and followed up with Jacomo 08. The appley goodness of So White followed with the chai tea of Jacomo 08 is awesome. The Jacomo 08 seemed extra milky today. The So White is very good – it is not extremely sweet and it smells fairly natural. Apparently, they made a So White perfume, which I would love to try. Perhaps they’ll bring it back?

I received several fragrant items in the mail yesterday – a package from Lush (So White Shower Gel and Yog Nog Soap) and a sample of Arlésienne Beauty Milk from L’Occitane. The beauty milk smelled pleasant, but I wanted more violet. The beauty milk is heavily scented – I put it on my arm last night, and I could still smell it this morning. I look forward to trying the EDT, which will hopefully showcase more notes.

I got to smell the So White and Yog Nog Soap this week – Yum!
I actually ended up purchasing another soap – Reindeer Rock – which smells delicious but does not lather…
Is that typical of Lush soaps?

And I ended up getting So White Shower Gel, Yog Nog soap AND Reindeer Rock soap. They are still wrapped but if I recall Karma soap from a year ago, it did not lather much either which I think is good because the substance that makes soaps bubble is some kind of chemical.

I almost ordered the Reindeer Rock (berries and sparkle? yes please!), but after I calmed down and read more, it seemed like the main note is black currant, so I didn’t order it (not a big fan of black currant).

I wish that I had a Lush store near me so that I could sniff stuff before

Jolie Madame parfum today! Planning on busting out my VINTAGE-vintage Magie Noire EdT mini tomorrow, for spooky…

We’ll have another Eisenhower Fellow visiting us this weekend, so no Halloweeny things going on for us. We’ve had visitors from Nigeria, China, Thailand, Brazil, France, and Russia and this weekend it’ll be Amr, from Saudi Arabia. Might have to wear some Amouage while he’s visiting. 🙂

In my household we couldn’t possible wait months to see new Downton Abbey episodes, we watch them on UK ITV player online, so I had no idea about the PBSification going on. There would be major agita if we had to watch cut episodes with patronizing intros.

Last year my Mom went nuts waiting, so she joined her local PBS just to get the full season (whatever that was post Matthew’s death), on DVD *IMMEDIATELY*. She watched all of them in just about 3 days and then spent eternity complaining about all of it to me over and over again, and I’d not even seen it! They should just release the entire season on one day and it would be like the crazy DA-ers Superbowl for PBS.

Ha, they should! But that’s exactly how I use my Tivo for many shows…save up the season, then binge watch. Hard to do with DA because it’s so hard to avoid spoilers.

Yes. I love the Violette — I drink it brewed double strong with cream, and it’s like drinking perfume. They also make an interesting chai (Tchai, I think is their spelling), and they make a buffalo grass blend tea (in green or black) that I can’t make up my mind about. The green tea + mint is excellent. Not overly fond of any of the other greens and have tried most of them (just that their base green is not done in my favorite style, that’s all) and would like to try more of the blacks but haven’t. Their limited edition holiday tea for this year sounds good, do let me know if you try it!

I really enjoy their rose tea, the strawberry green is a favorite of mine for summer (I drink all their green teas iced and cold-steep them to avoid the bitter edge).

As for their black teas, Prince Vladimir, Anastasia, and St. Petersburg are my favorites.

Have you tried any teas from Mariage Freres? I find their blends to have a softer entry but more long-lasting and complex development of scent and flavor. Plus, they seem to use more diverse teas for their blends, giving them a more individual character which I really enjoy discovering! A bonus for those living on the West Coast: Market Hall in Berkeley sells several of the MF teas (in tins, muslin sachets, or vacuum-sealed refill bags), so you can get them fast and the refills are a bit less pricey.

Robin, I do the same with my Kusmi Violette. Double strength with lots of milk or cream. Sometimes I put some Fauchon Rosebuds in there with it, and it is SO luxurious.

I am a fan of a lot of the Kusmi teas. I love their Almond green. It’s one of the only Almond teas I’ve ever found and really loved. Anastasia is wonderful, and I love their Euphoria, which is nice and chocolate-y and great for winter!

I’m wearing a lot of casual black today, but it fits well, so I’m wearing Mon Cuir…..casual with a little bit if somethin’ somethin’….. I’m not a huge lover of Monegal scents but this one is a pretty nice juxtaposition of floral and leather… Good for a cool, foggy fall day.

I’m coming down with the yearly change-of-seasons cold today, so I’m wearing one of my comfy cosy ‘warm blanket happiness’ (thank you Charles Schulz) scents today – Chopard’s Pure Wish. It’s amber-caramel-vanilla with a touch of citrus to lighten it up so no big amber/vanilla bombs here.

I’ve decided I definitely don’t have a taste in comfort scents that mirrors that of the American scent-buying public. The minute I find a scent that reads comfort to me, it’s discontinued. So this scent, along with my beloved Max Mara and Belle en Rykiel, is gone baby gone.

I swear by Cold-Eze. That echinacea really seems to work for me. I haven’t had a cold last more than 5 days in years, as long as I get the Cold-Eze started early. Years back I’d suffer for at least 10 days.

Thanks for the good thoughts 🙂

Today is Natori edp, which I am very happily going to get in FB for my birthday present from my hubbie (when that comes in Nov). I can drain my large decant with flourish! Yeah! I don’t get to do that often b/c normally I make the mistake of hording my LDs if I don’t think they are ever FBW.

I have no idea what I’m going to do tomorrow. I keep wondering what I have that is weird or spooky. Maybe I’ll just pick something sweet? What fragrance do I have that frightens people? Maybe it’s just a question of volume for being scarey. I’ll just dump a whole bottle of _________________ (Femme? Tocade? too much Mitsouko? Axe? Habanita (that’s for you, Mals)? ) over my head and watch the screaming hordes running away in panic!

I’m having the same dilemma re. tomorrow. I have lots of scents that the general public would consider weird but they are all pretty safe to me. The only ones I can think of that I consider pretty odd are hard for me to wear (Sadanne, Mare, and The Fall Frankensmellie). That’s two points for Slumberhouse for making me recoil in surprise and alarm.

Wearing Samsara today. I hardly ever wear this one, I guess because I always felt it was an “occasion” perfume for some reason. But that makes no sense, so I’m wearing it today. Aside from just about gassing myself this morning when I first put it on, it’s working for me. I’m getting a buttery note from the sandalwood that I’m finding very pleasant.

I’m busting out the old Black Cashmere today; even though it’s supposed to top 80 degrees later in the day, the mornings and nights have gotten chilly and this is my snuggle scent.

I have a job interview tomorrow so I’ll likely skip out on fragrance until afterward–perhaps I’ll take baby trick-or-treating in Dzing!

I’m not sure it’s a “traditional” choice, but I wore Black Cashmere a bunch of times over the summer during the daytime, and I thought it worked just fine! Even though I often think about seasonal appropriateness when I choose a perfume, I realize I’ve never once considered someone else’s seasonal appropriateness. So I think that if you’re comfortable with it, that’s all that matters!

Nothing yet today. Still vegging on the couch at 3 in the afternoon after celebrating that the World Series is OVER (teehee, I’m not a sports fan) and my SOs team won. So everybody won at our house!

I do, however, still smell some of the lingering creaminess of Tom Ford’s Champaca Absolute. I adore that fragrance, I just wish it wasn’t so darn expensive.

I’m wearing L’AP Timbuktu today since I won’t be able to wear perfume tomorrow morning due to various appointments.

I haven’t worn Timbuktu for a year or two and am surprised to find that it now smells to me exactly as Joe and Haunani used to describe it – forest freshness. I usually get a predominant celery-cumin-sweat note, and only occasionally the transparent, fresh woody perfume that I think must be what Duchaufour intended. Today I can clearly detect the cypriol note that LT described as “crisply burned dry wood on a bon-fire.”

So, not so weird, but it does recall walking through fall leaves with that heightened perception of Halloween evenings.

For something spookier, I may have to resort to one of the Grossmith recreations, which Denyse posited on Grain de Musc as a chance “to reach beyond Poiret and Chanel into the Edwardian era and be possessed by the ghosts of the great courtesans.” She ultimately decided that she’d “rather not to attend the séance” – but it’s Halloween, after all.

Back to beloved Diorissimo today. It was lovely on a cool, crisp day. Fades pretty quickly though.

I’m really stumped about tomorrow. I have 2 scents that I’d call weird. Gentiane Blanche is one of them, but it is so vegetal that it seems much more appropriate to Summer. Chypre Mousse is the other, and it has that undercurrent of forest-floor-decay, so I might go with it…decisions are hard.

It’s my birthday and I am slopping around the house with a fire in the fire place and the radio on. Left arm has a generous dose of L’Huere Bleue parfum, and my right a generous dose of Mitsouko parfum— so in this Guerlain bliss mode I am trying to rally to go grocery shopping for dinner… but maybe I can just sit here a little longer and smell so good . . .

On Halloween Eve, I will be visiting our hallowed historic movie theater for a 75th anniversary showing of the Son of Frankenstein from our classic 1939 film series complete with a visit from a cast member, one of the few remaining actors still around from the golden age of movies. My SOTE will be the BIG, BOLD, RED Chopard Madness, which seems appropriate to capture the mood of the night! I’ve already put this one on hours before (home alone for the day), however, so as not to create a toxic aura about me but rather just the soft rosy, spicy drydown that I enjoy hours later. Fragrantica lists the notes as: pink lychee, kumquat, pink pepper, flamboyant hibiscus, rose, Pao Rosa wood, palisander, and cotton flower and the nose as Christine Nagel. There is nothing ‘pink’ about this scent, however; the deep red Rubic’s cube-type bottle is indicative of the juice within, from an initial blast of pepper all the way down to the spicy wood at the bottom. It’s another one of those hate-it-or-love-it scents; I wear it rarely but when I do, BEWARE!

Scent of the day is Penhaligon’s Amaranthine, which I just received in a swap (thanks, Jamie!). I’m liking it a lot, and also hoping that how it’s smelling to my nose (green with lots of milky white flowers and a touch of banana weirdness) is the same as how it smells to others. Given some reviews, I could just as easily be walking around, inadvertently wafting “unwashed panties” in my wake. Let’s hope for the former.
