Frederic Malle The Night ~ new fragrance

Posted by Robin on 23 October 2014 17 Comments

Frédéric Malle The Night

French niche line Frédéric Malle will launch The Night this month in Dubai. The new fragrance "speaks the language of Middle Eastern perfume".

The Night was developed by perfumer Dominique Ropion. It reportedly features an "unprecedented proportion" of real oud, sourced from India, with additional notes of Turkish rose and amber.

Frédéric Malle The Night will be available in 50 and 100 ml. It will be available at Harvey Nichols and Bloomingdales in Dubai.

I’ve read rumours about the price… there had better be a shedload of oud in it if the rumours ($800?) are founded in truth.
It really is only Chanel left now isn’t it?

Honestly have such oud overload that I don’t even care what it costs…or if I ever smell it.

Trying to think what other major perfume houses haven’t done oud. It’s a short list, that’s for sure! Diptyque hasn’t, at least not in a personal fragrance, right? And Hermès.

I’m actually surprised that the oud tend hasn’t trickled down into the lower end brands like axe and bath and body works.

I can’t help thinking that their intended market is going to be disappointed by the claim of “an unprecedented proportion” of real oud, given that real oud oils and woods are sold there. And is this really going to top the (lamentably discontinued) Amouage attars?

OTOH, if The Night does for rose-oud what Portrait of a Lady did for rose-patchouli, LOOK OUT!

Well, maybe. But presumably people shopping in Harvey Nicks or Bloomies in Dubai are after a more luxury experience, right? I don’t think it matters. Also wouldn’t necessarily assume that the Middle East customer is even their only intended market…their market is probably anyone with tons of extra $. Launching in Dubai first gives them that extra little bit of authenticity.

It isn’t the amount of oud but the quality and the talent of the one using it. That is why I love Mona’s Oud.

Frederic Malle tends to do well in the “quality and talent” department, though…not worried this will be crap. Just don’t care 🙂

Oh. Look. Another overpriced rose/oud with a middle eastern theme. Super. What a trailblazer this Malle guy is, daring to go where no man has gone before!

Yup, trailblazer..I still like Lipstick Rose and kinda like Musc Rav though. I haven’t liked many from Freddie Malle, some are well done.. but most just not for me. I tend to like the packaging more than anything.

I still have to try the Iris Poudre..but it’s not my priority list.

*yawn* The name was intriguing, then when I read where it was going to launch, I thought, “Oud. Don’t care.” The possible price just reinforces how much I don’t care. All this oud is making me miss the days of pink pepper listed as every other note. :/

But let’s not forget that an oud (done well) and a malle (almost always) are oudorable! Like a cliche – we tire of it, but we do recognize the grains of truth.

I know there’s a lot of Oud out there, but I’m always taken aback at the almost vicious reaction towards it. I personally like the smell of oud, and appreciate a good quality rendition of it.
It just seems strange to me that there are plenty other ubiquitous notes out there that don’t seem to unleash the snobbery/boredom/ire of perfumedom… rose everything. Iris is getting there. Vanilla. Citrus. Would a flood of leathers evoke such a reaction?
