5 perfumes: wood pudding

Posted by Robin on 24 January 2017 55 Comments

Peterman Round Bowls, wood

As a way of classifying perfumes, fragrance families are useful, and most of them have enough of an “official” status that we understand what they imply. Fragrance families don’t tell the whole story, but they help us understand a bit better what a perfume might smell like, or more to the point around here probably, they help us to understand if we can be bothered to try something at all. If I tell you a perfume with berries, jasmine and patchouli is a fruity floral, which of course it could be, you might imagine a certain kind of smell, quite different than if I told you it was an oriental, or a chypre, or a green floral, or an aldehydic floral. What you imagine, of course, could be quite wrong, but it never hurts to know how Michael Edwards classified something after he smelled it.1

Many perfumistas, of course, have their own categories or subcategories, like creamsicle or skank or booze, or we might classify by specific notes we’re interested in, from mimosa to ylang ylang. Wood pudding™ is one of my own favorite personal / unofficial categories, especially in deep winter. A decent wood pudding fragrance is spicy and creamy, and comforting, but the relatively heavy woods temper the sweetness enough to keep the fragrance from falling into a more general gourmand or foody category. Here are 5 of my favorites, and do add your own in the comments!

Givenchy Organza Indecence very nearly defines the category…

Ego Facto Piege a Filles, Sacre Coeur and Jamais le Dimanche ~ fragrance reviews

Ego Facto fragrance bottles

Ego Facto (Paris) was founded by Pierre Aulas, who is described on the Ego Facto website as a “free spirit and olfactory expert.” Aulas feels he is a “conductor” working with “virtuosos” (perfumers) in the creation of the Ego Facto fragrances. Aulas says: “Ego Facto is my tribute to self affirmation, to the acceptance of one’s own contradictions. It is a declaration of freedom.” I’m ‘translating’ that to mean Aulas develops perfumes that appeal to him — he doesn’t have to worry about pleasing a corporate board, focus groups, or design teams. I assume the Ego Facto perfumes smell just like Monsieur Aulas wants them to smell.

Piège à Filles (Girl Trap)

(citrus, heliotrope, almond, cumin, orange blossom, tobacco, musk, vetiver)

Piège à Filles smells like a distorted, old-fashioned barbershop powder; the scents of heliotrope, orange blossom, scorched almond and cumin mix to create a “difficult” accord…

Ego Facto Poopoo Pidoo ~ perfume review

Ego Facto Poopoo Pidoo advertEgo Facto Poopoo Pidoo perfume bottle

Remember that lovely “rice steam” note from Kenzo Amour? Poopoo Pidoo, one of the debut fragrances from French niche line Ego Facto, takes that idea and brings it into sharper focus.1 Poopoo Pidoo is a powdery floral by perfumer Dominique Ropion, and I take it it’s supposed to be sexy — the tag line is “declare that you’re not just the girl they think you are” and the brand description notes that “…just like the person wearing it, it is not that well-behaved”. I haven’t made up my mind about the sexy part, but I love Poopoo Pidoo.

It starts with a sharp, citrus-y orange blossom, and very quickly moves into the gauzy, rice powder/heliotrope heart, which smells like a dusty blend of marshmallow cream, basmati rice and crushed toasted almonds…
