L’Entropiste ~ new niche brand

Posted by Robin on 25 March 2025 8 Comments

L’Entropiste is the new-ish Paris-based niche brand of perfumer Bertrand Duchaufour. They debut with six unisex fragrances: Altamura, Blanc Sada, Dawn Whispers, Dorian’s Spleen, Jodhpur 6am and Semence Douce.

Entropy, a universal law that drives imbalance and leads to chaos, has become the core principle of my creations. I deliberately introduce imbalance to initiate dynamics. Harmony emerges from unexpected contrasts and a deliberate tension between the forces of the scents I work with. — Bertrand Duchaufour

Altamura ~ "« I cannot see them, but I feel their endless dance deep within me. The dance of atoms, of stars, of snowflakes, of attic dust. » // This fragrance draws inspiration from such unexpected phenomena, from the chance of a revelation somewhere on our Earth, which immediately echoes what might manifest in the far reaches of the cosmos. The initial breath, almost cosmic, is accompanied by sparkling notes of sweet orange, mixed with strong alcohol, reminiscent of the warm, amber transparency of Cointreau. // The fragrance constantly evolves, transporting us to a nebula of incense expanding in the void, like an ascending cloud in space."

Blanc Sada (shown above) ~ "On her lips, the tangy taste of lychee. Her languid body, shamelessly powdered, stretched out directly on the tatami… // The milky rice powder contrasts with subtle notes reminiscent of crimson red on her lips. The elegance of iris enhances the refined character of the perfume, evoking the delicate makeup of a geisha. // At the heart of this white veil, a fresh green accord of straw and tatami appears, upon which her satisfied body rests. Blanc Sada reinvents the color of purity through a powdery, sensual, and delicate fragrance…"

Dawn Whispers ~ "A déjà-vu feeling emerges at the edge of my consciousness. Like a whisper in my ear, the cool dawn breeze carries the dream of another time. I am Orion, always in search of my past, my future. I hunt endlessly. Dawn Whispers invites reflection on the enigmatic connection between our reality and the unknown. // Dawn Whispers opens with a cold and ozonic note, like an echo suspended between two worlds. // Gradually, the fragrance softens, shifting toward subtle, enveloping milky tones. A warm-white base emerges, composed of rare, elusive woods, supported by musky and amber touches."

Dorian’s Spleen ~ "Fed by an eternal melancholy, Dorian spices up his life as best he can, indulging in strong drugs and alcohol. // It’s a rich whisky aroma, intertwined with the sweetness of caramel, coffee, and dark chocolate, that truly awakens our senses. Elegant and refined, it carries the sophistication of a dandy. // The fragrance evolves and transforms. Gradually, the delicate aromas give way to hints of ash and smoke."

Jodhpur 6am ~ "« Jodhpur awakens, and all of India resonates through my senses. » // « Jodhpur at dawn. My face weary from a grueling night of travel, I step off the bus as the first light begins to break. The city is draped in shades of gray and blue, and my tired eyes marvel at the sight. A chai vendor hands me a cup. Its unusual flavor and sweet fragrance blends with the myriad of flowers displayed along a bustling market just starting to awaken... A gentle balm to the soul. » // An unexpected fragrance, a contrast of spicy, fruity, and tangy notes, all mastered by the creaminess of tuberose. // Ginger and cardamom play with our taste buds, while the delicate aroma of black tea blends into a warm milk accord."

Semence Douce ~ "As the tulip bends and reveals its suggestive movements, its delicate and captivating fragrance subtly weaves the threads of life. // Slowly, its white, fleshy curves unfold, majestic yet fleeting, before dissolving into pearly pleasure. Semence Douce embodies the eternal cycle, the oscillation between birth and decline, between brilliance and fulfillment. The fragrance pays tribute to its first chapter and the ultimate beauty of its finitude. // A delectable, almost savory blend that combines the warm and comforting notes of almond milk with an exceptionally rare and precious saffron. // These aromas merge with the green freshness of tulip, evoking the slightly sticky tones of its sap."

L’Entropiste Altamura, Blanc Sada, Dawn Whispers, Dorian’s Spleen, Jodhpur 6am and Semence Douce are available in 50 (€210) and 100 (€295) ml Eau de Parfum. A discovery set with six 2 ml samples is €54, or choose your own 3 samples for €27, with the price redeemable on a full bottle purchase.*

I thought my eyes were seeing things and then I realized I wasn’t. I am also not so sure about the flowery prose …

I can totally do without the prose…

Well, I like that he has the confidence to claim to be different. And digging through the flowery prose, there do seem to be some interesting and more or less unusual juxapositions here. I would like to sniff these. Maybe this should be my project for Paris, to find where these live?

I went to the website, which is so exclusive, it doesn’t list an address for this enterprise. There was a contact email, so I emailed them and asked where I might be able to sniff these things when I am in Paris in May. I don’t know, excessive preciousness always puts me off somehow. I wrote in English. We’ll see what they say.

I think the store just opened less than a month ago. From Google:

59 Rue des Francs Bourgeois, 75004 Paris, France

Oh my. Well, the guy is very, very talented, more at perfumery than prose lol. The sample set will have to be mine at some point. That first one, with the “nebula of incense expanding in the void” 😵‍💫 sounds gorgeous and a couple of others do too.

He says in an interview that he will devote less time now to making perfumes for other brands, so that part is a shame.

And I would not assume he wrote all that, although possibly!
