Friday scent of the day 1/24

Posted by Robin on 24 January 2025 196 Comments

Happy Friday and happy National Peanut Butter Day! Birthdays: Edith Wharton, Neil Diamond, Aaron Neville, John Belushi. Our community project for today: wear a fragrance with benzoin, if you have one.

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I'm joining the Prada Candy train.

Reminder: on 1/31, we'll honor the Lunar New Year (coming up on Wednesday) by wearing a fragrance that reflects the qualities of the (Wood) Snake: wisdom, patience, elegance, charm and mystery.*

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2025, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image is Carey Mulligan (x 3) for Prada's Spring Summer 2025 campaign.

*A random list compiled from various articles about the 2025 Lunar New Year. Do your own research if you prefer!

    Hello and tgif!
Sotd is Guerlain Imagine. Orange blossoms dipped in gold upon a bed of creamy, resinous benzoin.
I have always preferred smooth peanut butter. Does chunky really make it better? Honest question.

Only smooth for me too. When I want chunks, I’d rather eat whole nuts (or chocolate with chunks of nuts).

My husband and I bought smooth peanut butter for years and years before discovering that we both preferred crunchy. He switched back to smooth for boring medical reasons but I still love the chunky peanutty kind — more textural interest equals more enjoyment, to me. Sometimes I’m tempted to get some dry-roasted peanuts, chop them coarsely, and stir them in for even more flavour and texture, and now that I’ve actually written it out, I think I will.

I like smooth and hubby likes crunchy so we buy both peanut butters. I’m like Glannys. If I want crunchy I’d rather have the nuts thus I usually have a jar of them too.

I used to like the crunchy more, and will happily eat it, but I only buy creamy these days. My preference is the natural, only peanuts and salt, kind. I eat a lot of nuts of all kinds, so I guess I am getting my crunchy fill that way.

I like the natural style also. I find that sometimes recipes using peanut butter recommend the regular peanut butter that you don’t need to stir but I’m not sure why. I’ve never had any issues with the natural style.

I eat toast with peanut butter as my breakfast most mornings. I like smooth.

Team Crunchy for peanut butter here. I agree with pyramus that it adds some much needed textural interest, especially in a classic PB&J.

But I have switched to almond butter in the past couple of years because I think it tastes even better than peanut butter.

Woke up with my hair still smelling of yesterday’s orange blossom combo – yum! After showering, it was time for my final layering of the week. I knew it had to include Candy, the queen of benzoin in my opinion. The question was: what would pair well with Candy? I decided to keep piling on the sweet and gourmand notes, risking an olfactory sugar coma.

Name of the layering: Bewitching Benzoin, Voluptuous Vanilla
Scents: Prada Candy + Guerlain Spiritueuse Double Vanille + Le Couvent Maison de Parfum Cologne of the Missions

It turned out to be not as overpowering as I had feared! Lots of fun with benzoin-vanilla goodness.

ChatGPT originally suggested just Prada Candy + Guerlain Spiritueuse Double Vanille and named it “Benzoin Decadence.” I added another scent and renamed it, but I admit that “Benzoin Decadence” sums up the whole community project very well.

These 2 are the main ones. I sprayed a bit of Cologne of the Missions near the collarbone as a sort of foundation for Guerlain and Prada, but I think this pair will work well without it.

Today I’m in the benzoin-iest thing I know, Givenchy Pi. It was yet another one of those instant-love things for me: I bought it as soon as I smelled it because I just knew, and I’m still working on that same bottle over a quarter of a century later. There are lots of interesting things going on up top, but by the time you reach the basement it’s like 90% pure benjamin.

I’m wearing Voleur de Roses, which has a base note of benzoin. I looked for benzoin in my full bottles, and then in my decants, but didn’t find anything I really wanted to wear. I’ve been on a rose kick this month, so when I found benzoin listed in VdeR, I went with that.

I’m in Coromandel EDT 🙂 It was that, or Le Lion.

We have a break from polar vortex-now it’s much warmer and snowing. I have a countdown to spring on – someone here said it was 55 days, and they said this maybe two days ago. But in my head it’s 42 days or so. Snow math is like perfume math-unique to the individual, so pls leave me with my delusions 🙂 I’m happier that way.

I was going to do Bois d’Armenie but instead went with Tiger by Her Side from Sana Jardin, which lists benzoin as a note in the sampler pack that a friend loaned me. It’s very pretty and reminds me of a lighter Coromandel, with which is shares a chocolatey patchouli note. Thanks to others here who have mentioned it, which made me reach for it this morning.

I saved a very old and dear favorite for today’s CP, and it was a challenge finding it because I have it double-ziplocked and tucked in among some non-perfume items. But unearth it I did, and it’s still its glorious floral-ambery self. Of course I’m referring to Teo Cabanel’s Alahine. I have the original glass bottle with the fine red cord around the neck, and it off-gasses from somewhere so the bottle is always a bit sticky and a danger to whatever it sits on (hence the ziplocking), but I love it anyway.

The “problem” (not really) with NST is that I end up wanting to try all the fragrances I read about! It’s a good problem to have, though, and you all smell marvelous! I rediscovered my tiny decant of Bois des Iles parfum and am wearing a very small drop of it. I can’t say I detect the benzoin it allegedly contains; when a fragrance has significant sandalwood in it the sandalwood is usually mostly what I can smell.

    Happy Friday!

I love NST for many many reasons and I’m especially grateful this morning for the CP and SheriG’s inspiration to wear Alahine. I bought a bottle several years ago, found I didn’t like it as much as I thought I would, split most of the bottle and today, I’m really enjoying it. Go figure! Is it me? Is it the fragrance aging? Both of us aging? Whatever it is, thank you SheriG and thank the perfume gods that I left some for myself🥰

I ask the same question. The aspect of my perfume collecting that makes me feel most guilty is not the new acquisitions but the older ones which languish. However, the next question is why, even when my tastes change, there are a few that keep my interest – Chanel No. 5 Eau Premiere is circa 2010 and still a favorite.

I totally relate to the guilt about languishing perfumes. I definitely feel a pang of guilt each time I spray a neglected bottle and love it. As a therapist, I really have to take a look at this strange phenomenon🤔

I love benzoin as a note, and I have quite a few perfumes with it. Today I am going with one of my winter staples, Aftelier Cepes & Tuberose. Although it’s all about the heady mix of tuberose and earthy mushrooms, there is a beautiful and distinct benzoin note in the base. I have a bottle of pure parfum concentration and I’m enjoying it gently wafting off my wrist today. I will likely spritz another perfume where benzoin is featured, Strange Invisible Perfumes Etrange, later on. Both are all natural perfumes, my favourite kind of scent. Commando for now because I have a medical procedure later today, but I wore Coromandel yesterday and I’m very much looking forward to wearing something later, I probably won’t be able to resist jumping on the Alahine train!

I remember all the hoopla surrounding Alahine for a while and I succumbed to FOMO and bought a bottle blind. I liked it the first one or two times I wore it, but then the appeal faded. I either swapped it here or sold it, I can’t remember which, but no regrets.
I enjoyed Cologne pour le Soir yesterday, so today I am wearing its Big Sister, Absolue pour le Soir. I think I heard a rumor that FK was re-releasing this. I might need a backup bottle if it hasn’t been reformulated.

OMG I finally finished 28 discs of A Little Life.
Now I can move along to Harry Bosch, another LA person ( even if he is fictional). I love to drive listening to Michael Connolly.

House twins with Desirae today in a bit of vintage L’Origan. Tons of benzoin, and perfect for a cold and sunny day. It’s amazing how gorgeous those older formulations of Coty fragrances were. This is one of the most gorgeous frags I own! I bought this as part of a set of three teeny mini bottles. This makes me so happy, since I can wear it and not have to worry about the rest of it going off.
    Happy Friday, everyone!

Green Drinks is an offshoot of the Go Green movement and meets in many countries. Ours gets together once a month informally in an Irish pub nearby and always features a speaker on a nature/environmental topic. You can find more info and where you can meet up with like-minded people here:

I’m thinking of SL’s A La Nuit today, I bought it way back in 2013, so it’s probably classed as vintage by now – vintage used to mean really old, now the term seems to be used for anything older than last week 🙂 .

Tonka bean + benzoin + labdanum = a warm, comforting hug on yet another very 🥶 day in my SOTD and choice for today’s cp, YR Sable Fauve. Like many of you, I didn’t realize I had so many fragrances with a benzoin note and, quite frankly, even know what benzoin was until I looked it up this week. The one blessing with all this cold weather is the abundance of ☀️; my house has many windows on all sides and it’s actually warmer inside when the temps are bitter cold but 🌞 than when it’s warmer outside but cloudy and gloomy.

Despite the cold, it’s been a very social week for us. Our monthly Green Drinks get-together featured a wonderful insect photographer – so many beautiful creatures in our neighborhood we’re unaware of! Our monthly classic film series on the mega screen in our historic movie theater featured Seven Samurai – what a great film to see on the big screen!

Tonight my thoughts begin to turn to Spring as we celebrate the 2005 World Series Champion Chicago White Sox at the first Soxfest since the pandemic. I can’t believe that was 20 years ago already but I’ll never forget the 2 games I was able to attend! A bonus for me is that it’s being held in another historic movie theater that was closed for many years and recently brought back to life, and it’s the neighborhood theater I attended during all my growing up years, so many memories! And tomorrow, even more springtime in the form of the annual seed exchange at the Chicago Botanic Garden. We look forward to this every year; there’s always an inspirational lecture beforehand and we get most of our seeds for the year as well. 🪴 🌹 🥕.

Wishing everyone a good weekend ahead and special thoughts and prayers go out to those affected by the California wildfires. 🤗 🤗

She told us she started taking photos of flowers but when she enlarged them on her computer she then noticed the insects. So she began focusing on taking photos of the insects on the plants, not knowing what they were until she enlarged them on her computer and only then learning on how to identify them. Each of them were so finely and beautifully detailed in her photos, and there was a great variety of species I’d never heard of, that I’ll bet if you saw them you would be as fascinated as I was and not repulsed at all.

If given a choice, cold vs. hot, I’d choose cold every time. I don’t mind it, as long as I don’t have to drive in ice and snow. ‘Hot’ usually comes with humidity, which I don’t tolerate well at all.

    Frozen berries and yogurt smoothie

For the CP this morning I decided on Louanges Profanes, there was a lot going on in it but I believe part of its pleasant sweetness is thanks to benzoin; again for the CP tonight it’s Brécourt Farah where the benzoin is front and center along with dates, and because I haven’t worn it in a good while, I added Kenzo Amour le Parfum on my sleeve, mostly rice and benzoin in that one.

I’m in Diptyque’s Benjoin Boheme today, thanks to a split Bronyraur hosted a couple years ago. I’m not sure why, but to me this smells like an upscale antique furniture store. It must be a scent memory from childhood of a particular store back when my parents would go antiquing and drag me along. Ironically I enjoying antiquing now, but none of the stores ever smell like this.

Tea today is Clipper Ship’s French Grey. Yum!

I keep meaning to run over to one of the specialty shops in town to see if anyone carries the Papier d’Armenie, out of curiosity to try it. It’s worth looking at the whole campaign with Carey Mulligan and how different she looks in each outfit!

It is worth trying all 3 versions of Papier d’Armenie, but the Year of Armenia one by Francis Kurkdjian is by far my favorite and I love the matching candle. The little strips are great for scenting things…I put them in drawers, and in my purse, etc. I wish he’d do a perfume in the scent. (He might actually have developed the rose version too, I can’t remember now)

Prada Candy was a perfume I kept considering but it never quite made the cut. I guess if I ever see it at Marshall’s.

I am wearing a sample of Matiere Premiere Encens Suave which has a benzoin note. I am comparing samples of Encens Suave to Vanagloria samples for incense-vanilla. Both are nice but I think Vanagloria is winning.

I got 2 compliments on sample of Maison Tahiti Floranilla I wore yesterday. That one smells like Good and Plenty candy to me. It also reminded me a little of Guerlain Insolence – maybe the violet?

It has vanilla orchid and sandalwood so I wasn’t sure that I had anything that would go with it so didn’t buy it. I wear the Bum Bum Body Butter with Indochine and like that.

This year, my brother is working on my birthday. So we figured either an early birthday lunch, or a belated one. Since he has been using Sundays as a veg-out day, we decided on an early birthday lunch. Had lovely weather for it, too.

If you like patchouli or woody perfumes, I think those would go well with Delicia Drench. I am enjoying it with Prada Candy. Matching it with a vanilla scent might be challenging. I’ve noticed that sometimes different kinds of vanilla fight with each other.

I was thinking maybe Shalimar MJ since it could go with a floral.

Supposedly Delicia Drench has sugared violets in it, but I didn’t notice them.

Maybe time to get a sample?

Actually, you are right on time with the birthday salutations!

Prada Candy is probably one of the best gourmands I have in the Perfume Stash.

Thanks Robin! I had some chocolate truffles from Vosges that just happened to be hanging around, so I had a very nice nibble!

    Hey Guys!
I’m sorry I missed so much NST but I was dreadfully sick this past week. I spent my whole staycation on the couch with Vernors and crackers. I finally felt well enough today that I went to work. Silver lining is I didn’t have to go out in the Artic blast. I didn’t wear any perfume and at one point was so congested it wouldn’t have mattered.
Today I put on a few dabs of Eau de Givenchy.

So sorry Lillyjo that you spent your holiday being sick instead of being able to have a good time. Glad you feel more like yourself today.

I was going to email you today if you weren’t on here because Jalapeno mentioned she hadn’t noticed you. I went back and saw you hadn’t posted for a week.

Feel bad you were sick, but glad you are feeling better.

Oh, sorry to hear about your ill staycation, glad you are feeling better and could at least avoid the Arctic blast. Take it easy, take it slow.
