Friday scent of the day 1/17

Posted by Robin on 17 January 2025 179 Comments

Happy Friday! Birthdays today: Benjamin Franklin, Anne Brontë, Betty White, Eartha Kitt. RIP David Lynch. Our community project for today: we're focusing on Betty White (1922-2021). Do absolutely whatever you like with the theme. If you need it: Betty White: A legacy of saucy joy that never grew old at The Christian Science Monitor, Why Betty White is so awesome at Today, Betty White, Progressive Superhero of TV History at Peabody Awards.

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

Huge thanks to therabbitsflower for reminding me that Betty White did a cameo on the TV series Community way back in 2010. She was only in 2 episodes, primarily in the Season 2 opener "Anthropology 101", where she played Professor June Bauer. (She was also in a brief end tag at the end of episode 3). I decided that called for silly, so I'm in Jean Paul Gaultier Ma Dame.

Reminder: on 1/24, wear a fragrance with benzoin, if you have one.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2025, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Bonus watch for Community fans: Dani Pudi, Betty White and Donald Glover perform the Anthropology Rap. Sorry if you have to sit through a commercial.

    Hello and tgif!
Sotd is based on this fact: Betty “White” played “Rose” Nylund in “Golden” Girls = Rose perfume in White and Gold bottle = Aerin Rose de Grasse.

A few dabs of Shalimar for another cold day.
Headed to the library later to volunteer.

Coffee with a lot of half and half

I have been searching but I think the tresor nuit vanilla flanker is not in the US yet. I am wanting to try , but mostly I like the bottle

Like your choice of silly, Robin. When I think of Betty White, I think of Password. There’s a game show channel called Buzzr that used to air Password reruns. Betty’s husband Allen Ludden was my fave Password host, and it was always entertaining when Betty was a guest. It occurred to me a good tie-in would be something with a cherry note (Ludden, like Luden cough drops, natch😉) but nothing in my collection seems a good match. In Rose Cherie for the Rose connection, but have never seen Golden Girls!

My parents became religious watchers of Golden Girls at some point, but I never joined in. However, when my mother came to live with me as her health was deteriorating, we began watching it in reruns every night, and I found it was sometimes silly but often truly hilarious. There are such funny episodes and each of the women on the show was a superb comic actress. It’s also fun if you can find a program with bloopers. Hope you can try it some time!

Big love to Betty White in the great hereafter! 🥰 Who doesn’t love this woman? No one, that’s who!

I’m just getting off shift and still wafting the lovely Angel’s Share. But, I can tell you I was no angel and have spoken with the house supervisor and unit manager regarding patient care issues. I’m true to form! 😎

Hope everyone has fond memories of Beautiful Betty. Loved her interactions with everyone but especially Lucille Ball, Joan Rivers, and many other female comedians. Also, her game show era was the bomb! Do we have a National Betty White Day? If not, we NEED one.

    Happy Friday NST!
The love of Betty’s life was her husband Alan Ludden. When asked why she never married again, she said “I’ve had the best, why would I want the rest?”
The fragrance that has scented my marriage is Chanel Coco, so I’m wearing it in honor of Betty and Alan.

I’m wearing Narcisse Noir today, which might seem like an odd choice if you don’t know that a large bottle of the same can be seen wandering through the ladies bedrooms on The Golden Girls. Perhaps they all shared it, or perhaps the set dressers just really liked the look of the famous bottle.

I went with Francesca Bianchi’s Under My Skin because that’s exactly where many of Betty White’s characters were meant to get. Sue Ellen on The Mary Tyler Moore Show for sure, but also my love-to-hate-her favorite, Catherine Piper in Boston Legal. Oh, but she was good at portraying passive aggression!

I’m in Bandit today because, like Germaine Cellier, Betty White was a trailblazer, who committed fully to every role, took risks and modeled the best of what it means to be full of one’s self.

    And she stole our hearts💕

I decided to honor Betty White (Rose Nylund) in Portrait of a Lady. This is such a gorgeous rose.

On The Golden Girls, Rose frequently talked about her hometown of St. Olaf. Due to Rose’s stories, people basically got the idea that it was a town of idiots. In reality, there actually is a Norwegian Lutheran private college south of Minneapolis named St. Olaf. Both of my parents went there. It is a highly respected college in the Midwest that tends to admit very intelligent students. No “idiots” are in that St. Olaf. 🤣

On weekends when I didn’t fly home I went to the Mall of America to see a film or shop. Also hit the IKEA cafeteria nearby. Then there was a wonderful supermarket where you could grab dinner before shopping, but I can’t recall the name. The end of the project overlapped with the start of the baseball season so we caught a Twins-Brewers game under the dome.

Betty White was born in 1922, the same year that Chanel 22 was created. I have a sample for the CP. Yesterday I culled my perfumes and sent a box off to my friend up north . She lives in a town with no perfume shops ( pretty much like me) and loves perfume so it’s a win-win . She loves rose perfumes which is the one note that I don’t often wear. I sometimes buy a rose perfume only to be reminded that I really don’t like it despite ‘trying’.

Betty White’s birthday is a perfect cp for today for several reasons! In order to use up my too-large collection of fragrances, I have a theme or themes for each month and rotate my scents accordingly. Because January in Chicagoland is often very cold, snowy, gloomy and the longest month of winter with many dark days, my theme is White (for the cold, snowy) – featuring lots of vanilla and is the only time I wear white florals – and Black (for the long gloomy darkness). And I did not know that Betty was born in mid-January and was surprised to learn she was born in Oak Park, a Chicago suburb, so my monthly theme works well for her!

The SOTD I chose is the little-known Caswell Massey Pure Frost, a seasonal release from 2012 which combines both whites – vanilla and white florals in the form of Casablanca lily and Indian jasmine along with bergamot – in a surprisingly comforting combination of a bit of crispness and lots of warmth. It’s perfect for a winter day and one of my favorites; I have the edt, lotion, and bar soap and backups of each. I ❤️ it!

Got all my errands run earlier on a beautiful ☀️ and warm morning with temps up to 40F today. But we’ll be tucked in the next few days as a real frosty blast is due starting tomorrow with temps only in the single digits for numerous days. It is, after all, January ❄️☃️🥶!

    Happy Friday and Happy Weekend!

    Sotd Rose of Dangerous Flamenco.

While Rose Nylund was sweet and naive, originally the producers wanted Betty to play Blanche, similar to Sue Ann Nivens character on The Mary Tyler Moore Show. Was there ever an episode where Sofia had a concussion and imagined all theee actresses were playing different characters? That would have been a tour-de-force episode and so much fun to me.

Oh, I’m glad you linked to the rap video, Robin. That’s the one I was going to share today.

Continuing my inspiration of wearing perfumes I purchased from Anthropologie since BW’s character on Community was an anthropology professor, today I’m in Sweet Anthem Lizie. It has notes of petit grain, tomato leaf, immortelle, neroli, dirt, oakmoss. I thought the professor character would enjoy a dirt note and probably a tomato leaf note too. Unfortunately, I oversprayed and gassed out my nose a bit, but it’s calming down now.

Happy Friday all, and I hope those who work can enjoy a three day weekend for MLK Day on Monday.

That is a bummer. It seems to move around a lot on the streaming services. I am a mega fan so my partner and I bought the Blu Ray set of the complete series when it came out a few years ago. I’ve watched the show more times than I can count! Definitely a comfort show for me.

I am loving everyone’s interpretations of the CP this week! And has me contemplating a re-watch of Community.

I’m wearing In Love Again for Rose Nylund, both because of the rose note and because the character has so much love to give.

Today’s tea is Clipper Ship’s Banana Cream. I thunked the tin of leaves, which gets me two points in the Pantry Foraging Game that Mr. Vee and I are playing. The goal is to make meals from the cans, jars, packages, leftovers, etc. that we already have in the pantry and freezer so we use them up and clear out space. One point if it is something we will eventually restock, and two points if we won’t restock it.

I love your Pantry Foraging Game! I did that with my refrigerator and was kind of done until I got my big shipment of Omaha Steaks stuff (great deal IMHO). I have also been slowly looking through my basement and pantry and using / throwing out stuff as long as it makes sense to do that.

Pantry foraging is such a great idea! I’ve been trying to whittle down some teas and spices. The other day I added some Szechuan peppers I found to a greens and broth soup I threw together. I thought they’d be stale, but they. were. not. My mouth and lips were tingly yet numb in that weird way only Szechuan peppers can do.

It was an idea I read somewhere online. That person called it “January Hunger Games” and the goal was to eat all month without grocery shopping or take out. I refuse to forgo fresh milk and eggs, I we modified it and extended it through February.

In fact, it’s been a bit of a struggle ever since before Christmas when I caught whatever virus it was that lasted almost 3 weeks. I just can’t quite get my chores done and my morning workouts that usually help me feel energized are mostly just exhausting. It’s also Mr. SP’s birthday tomorrow and I’m not ready for that either!

Spent the day traveling and have discovered that I am (to my delight) CP compliant without even having had time to check NST or the CP all week (new job, great, I’m exhausted). I am in three gentle spritzes of Roísín Dubh. Wish I were close enough to Kanuka to send a decant — I generally do t think of myself as someone who likes rose scents, but I completely adore this one.

Mr. Skal and I had the best Thai food we have had in YEARS for (very early) dinner tonight — in Moline, Illinois. The restaurant is called Lemon Grass. It comes up as #1 on the TripAdvisor list for Moline, but what sold me was that it was the first one my Moline – resident seat mate on the flight in mentioned when I asked for recs. She raved about it, and now I will, too.

Chiming in quite late, but I’m in Outremer Rose for Rose, of course. I really like this line of French perfumes. They used to be called L”Aromarine. All under $30 for 50 ML. Their Cola fragrance is the most realistic I’ve smelled, even though it’s gone within an hour. In general, they are cheap and cheerful and lack all the horrible modern aromachemicals that grate and pester my nose.
