Friday scent of the day 10/20

Posted by Robin on 20 October 2023 198 Comments

It's Friday! It’s also International Chefs Day, World Osteoporosis Day and Information Overload Day. Birthdays: Arthur Rimbaud, Jelly Roll Morton, Bela Lugosi, Tom Petty, Viggo Mortensen. Our community project for today: wear a fragrance that evokes one of Pantone's picks for the Autumn/Winter 2023/2024 NYFW Color Palette. (If you like, click through to the article and pick your fragrance based on the color name or description rather than the color itself, as in "Exuding the warmth and splendor of the sun, High Visibility expresses joy and good cheer." or "Sturdy and steady Burnt Sienna conveys a sophisticated earthiness." Also note that the set includes Viva Magenta, the color of the year...you could cheat and wear what you picked for that project.)

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I had Tender Peach plans for today, but instead I’m getting through the tail end of Covid. I'm commando and I slept in, again.

Reminder: on 10/27 we're doing Specialty woods... wear a perfume with guaiac, cypress, oak, or some other specialty wood note we haven't already done (we've covered oud, sandalwood, cedar and evergreens).

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2023, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

    Hello all!

I’m in Y-06S today. After that initial crush of banana, it’s a lovely jasmine. More Tender Peach than High Visibility in my humble opinion. I’m up earlier than usual getting an oil change.

    Have a great weekend, everyone.

I’m opting out of the CP (no imagination) but I’m wearing Purple Fig, a new decant for me. I generally hate fig scents, but I like this one. So far, with Philosykos, that’s two fig scents that I like.

Sounds like you’re on the mend, Robin, and good to hear it.

Last day in Amsterdam before we head back to Paris by train. It rained alllll day and still is raining: we have unlimited transit passes so we took some light rail to a few places and then got tired of the cold and wind and rain, picked up sandwiches and drinks for supper, and headed back to the hotel. I don’t really have anything with me that calls to mind a colour: I’m in Gaultier Scandal Le Parfum, which is mostly sweet candied things, so no points for me.

But maybe half points for toothpaste! I know you like offbeat toothpastes as much as I do, Robin, and I know you’d want to hear about the Dontodent I got in Germany a few days ago (it’s the Drogerie Markt house brand, and they can be relied on to come up with some oddities): it’s Fresh Peach. Huh! I haven’t even tried it yet but I’m sure it will be strange in a good way.

I hope so too! It might be raining a little when we arrive tomorrow afternoon but the remainder of the trip should be fine.

Some cities I instantly love — Tokyo, Edinburgh — and others are more of a slow burn. Amsterdam was like San Francisco for me; it took me a while to warm to its particular charms, but the longer I’m here the more I love it. It’s a city like no other, and I’m so happy I came here. I’d recommend it to anybody.

It is slow! This has really been like having mono. But I think I am a wee bit better today.

Sorry for crappy weather on your last day.

And do report back on the toothpaste! I just bought Boka’s children’s flavor, Orange Cream, and am enjoying it but maybe not as strong a creamsicle flavor as I’d hoped. I still have not tried the Marvis tea trio, I need to get on the ball but I do possibly have too many flavors at the moment (just counted: 9 open tubes at the moment, although several of those are travel sizes).

I did NOT particularly care for either of the Lebon flavors I tried: Tropical Crush (pineapple & rooibos) and Back to Pampelonne (mango & mint). I have one more I haven’t opened yet: Villa Noacarlina (cinnamon & mint).

The worst thing about toothpaste for me is that my dental hygienist says I’m caries-prone and need to use Prevident 5000, a toothpaste with 5 times the usual amount of fluoride, which means I don’t get to use all the delicious ones like the Marvis very often (she was shocked, shocked I say, to discover that it has no fluoride whatsoever). I mostly brush with the boring SPF-5000 (as I derisively call it) and save the nice ones for occasional use.

I would definitely try an orange-Creamsicle toothpaste!

Some of the Marvis do have fluoride…my Black Forest and Orange Blossom Bloom both say “fluoride toothpaste” right on the front. So it is worth checking! My favorite, Karakum, does not have fluoride.

Ask your dentist what they think of Nano Hydroxyapatite for cavities…my regular toothpaste (I use it every night) is a Japanese toothpaste with Hydroxyapatite (it is by Apagard), and that is what Boka uses as an active ingredient too. I have seen studies saying that are comparable in terms of efficacy but I’m sure your dentist knows more than I do!

Glad you are getting better Robin! Rest and sleep in all you need. 🙂
My CP pick is Rose Violet and my sotd is Hermes Violette Volynka.
Straight up violet with a suede/leather base. I love it! If only all the Hermessences were edp, then they would last longer…but maybe it’s the edt that gives them that watercolour or airy quality.

I wanted to join the iris gang, but none of my iris perfumes seemed right for Persian Jewel: Shalimar Parfum Initial L’Eau is light pink or mauve, Iris de Nuit is a much darker shade of blue and I imagine Naiviris as greyish purple blue. Clair de Musc is lovely, but I am just not in the mood for musk today.

So my today’s iris is… lilac! En Passant for Persian Jewel – fleeting but very pretty.

I’m here in my jeans and hoodie, wearing Chanel Cuir de Russie. It is paired with Red Dahlia, supposedly exuding “elegance personified.” Elegance, yeah, that’s me. I have an elegant day planned, of swapping out the summer comforter for winter and maybe taking a nap later. I woke up too early.

I chose the color Burnt Sienna today. The color reminds me of both woods and spices. For the woods I chose Diptyque Tam Dao for the sandalwood and woodsy notes. For the spices in the evening on the other wrist I am going to wear Jo Malone Ginger Biscuit which has notes of ginger, nutmeg, and cinnamon and is one I’m currently loving.

I’m matching Une fleur de cassie to the deep yellow of High Visibility (what an awful name by the way). Cassie’s character would probably be better represented by Red Dahlia (elegance personified, Cassie is a very elegant scent) or Viva Magenta (powerful and empowering).

Cassie is a proper old school perfume with plenty of character and a bold attitude. It’s one of my favourite Malles.

It’s very rainy in Luxembourg, which makes for somber days, but the trees needed the water, it’s been quite a dry year.

This morning I’m in Caleche and thinking it pairs well with Doe from the New Classics set. But later today we have a family wedding supper for Mr. G’s older son and bride, and I will be wafting Chanel 19 EDT all over the place. Haven’t worn it in far too long. I think it pairs with Kohlrabi — both the bright green color and the “dash of piquancy” from the description. Happy Friday everyone!

Color of the day is Persian Jewel to match Lutens’ ISM.
Just had a Wild Kingdom moment: something caught my eye outside the kitchen window: a brown hawk, 12″-15″ inches in height,
standing in the back yard, just losing its grip on a chipmunk. Saw the chipmunk darting away, hawk hovering right after it.
No carnage visible–prey either escaped, or was spirited off into the sky. My own personal episode of Nature!

I got TH with my Shalimar MI too. At first it smelled awful on my skin, but the next morning it smelled pretty good. It obviously wasn’t too memorable to me because I don’t remember what it actually smelled like 😂

I’m surprised to see Shalimar MI continues to be available on the Guerlain site. What do you think about it? Reports of it being heavy on caramel to iris have stopped me from ordering so far but I’ve really enjoyed the last two millésimes so I’m wavering here…

I’m one of the rare people who have never gotten caramel. I don’t know why. Maybe try it? If you don’t like it, I’m sure you could either split it or sell the entire bottle, so not a high risk proposition.

I got mostly iris and vanilla but do smell caramel off and on. I loved it so much I got a BUB and I have never seemed to care for Shalimar before. Believe me if you don’t like it there will be someone here who will take it off your hands. I would be happy to have a back up to my back up 😀

Trying Pas Ce Soir Extrait today which I happened to get a sample of. It’s nice and seems better than the original to my nose from what I remember of it.

BDK veers into the poser niche genre for me which is a highly subjective epithet I use to describe prolific niche houses that birthed themselves in the last 5-10 years and charge high prices but don’t necessarily deliver anything truly new or worthy. 🙂 Maybe I am just mad about the general onslaught of niche houses in recent years like fast zombies that keep spawning and can’t be killed..it’s possible. 😉

Loads of sleep, hot showers, drinking copious amounts of water, and fresh clean sheets–! The best one can do to slog through COVID in my totally inexpert, no-nothing opinion! 😇

I’m in 19-69’s Chronic, inspired by the Pantone color Kohlrabi. Vegetal and herbal this one. My husband loves it. It is supposed to have a ganja note–I don’t notice it, at least not like any ganja I have smelled! 🌱

    Update on Royalty Scents:

About 36 hours after my initial email with the documentation showing the double billing (plus messages sent to them via Instagram and Facebook), I received a very gracious email apology and a promise that I will be reimbursed. So far, about 1/3 of what I am owed has been sent to me (they are sending as monthly refunds). I am guessing that they get charged for certain transactions, and the least expensive for them is to send a refund that exactly matches a charge. . . but I don’t know. Will keep you posted. So far so good, if not exactly fast.

I started with Shalimar MI today, but then wanted something stronger so I sprayed Shalimar edp over it. I matched it with Burnt Sienna. When I got to work my coworker had brought her bottle of Melrose Place for me to smell. I told her it was really pretty ( it is!) And she told me she wanted me to have it! How nice is that!? So now I am wearing it too.( it’s about 20% full and she said she would be buying a new one for herself)
In other perfume news.. I saw on the Essentially Dacob channel that Chanel was repackaging Cristalle edp and edt in New bottles! So far this looks to be true only on the U.K website.

I have perfume indecision syndrome because scattered everywhere in the house I glimpse a perfume saying “ pick me”! I don’t know how it happened but I have a perfume sitting on top of the bread bin ( Fiele Viola). I must have got distracted half way through tidying by the thought of a toasted crumpet dripping with butter and honey …okay, wearing Confetti to match all the colours all together, and feeling in awe of all the spring growth and colours…an incredible burst of pinks, yellows, crimsons, orange, purple…and bright green.

Hope you are somewhat better Robin.

A lovely fall day, hope weather holds for the w.e.

ChocolateMarzipan wore it in copious amount yesterday and Cazaubon evoked a 250ml bottle, so I picked Mitsouko today, burnt sienna, I think and I made an experiment: applied vintage EDT on hand, vintage extrait on wrist and Avon Rapture on other wrist. And the little Avon held its own against the mighty Guerlain. It is supposed to resemble both Mitsouko and Ode. I smelled Ode only once with Victoria, so not sure how close it is (I wish I had some but it’s quite rare) and it’s only cologne concentration and lasted well.

I decided to eat more avocados and started this evening with avocado on toast, may have some soup but no smoothie today.

I had to look up that Avon, as it was not one with which I was familiar. Fragrantica gives the launch date as 1961; I find that so many of the “cheap” perfumes of the 1960s and 1970s really do hold up well against against their much pricier counterparts, and often smell much more expensive than they were.

Yes, totally agree, and it’s the case with Rapture, it really doesn’t smell cheap. No way to tell which decade it’s from, I would venture the 70’s by the bottle and spray mechanism. It’s now very faint but 5 sprays lasted 6 hours which is enough in my book, of course the Mitsouko extrait is still going strong, I would expect no less but the EDT has faded too.

I have and enjoy many of the 1960’s Avon perfumes. 10 years ago as I was falling, falling down the rabbit hole, they were a great way to experience Vintage Style for perfume-math free. I think that is still the case. Where I live, every thrift and resale store will have a bottle or two.

So I got a call earlier in the week and just in time I was able to sign up for a class. Apparently, no matter how seasoned you are, you have to take a class every 2 years. In any case, I have zero experience so it was brand new material for me. I was asked which political affiliation I am and I said what it was and of course I was perplexed. It became clear to me at the training where 2 people, one for each major political party, have to sign off on “stuff”. Anyway, I have to review the materials in the next week or so. There are many things to remember! I was assigned to an elementary school on Election and will be there by … 5:15 AM! Stay tuned!

I’m still wafting last night’s perfume, which was one of my Paris holiday purchases in April, Rivalité Impériale from Plume Impression. It’s quite sweet, but in the dried fruit way that I am quite partial to. It comes in the most ridiculously hefty packaging, getting that back home in my suitcase was an effort.
I’m thinking of something lighter post-shower, maybe Le Jardin de Monsieur Li that Kanuka so kindly gave me.

Thanks to everyone for their well wishes about my bad shots today. They’re done and I survived! I’ve only got one more to do–next month will be 12th of 12. The nurse/PA said that other people in my cohort on the same time frame are all doing really well on their bone scans, and I’m due to get mine within this next month. Yay! And yes, Kanuka, I’m still doing my watercolors. In fact, since the nice nurse also does watercolor painting, I took three of them in with me today to show her, and she seemed appreciative. I’m learning how to do more techniques, to put small (blobby) people into landscapes, and to do better perspectives and shading. It’s fun!

I often stop to visit in a fancy jewelry shop in the big hospital/doctor complex, which also has cafes and restaurants, florists’, etc. it is fun to talk with the people there who are friendly and after my various bone replacement surgeries I’ve sometimes treated myself to a special piece, which is great fun. I didn’t get anything “BIG” today but found some pretty and not too expensive gray coin pearl earrings which they had, and which just happened to match the long necklace I was wearing today. Imagine that! Maybe after next month’s final shot and doctor consultation I’ll find an appropriate celebratory piece!

So my SOTD is Arctic Jade, which is a bit of a cheat to match with the Carnival Glass green. In part it’s because that color is described is icy, and “Arctic” goes with ice, right? And jade is sometimes a vivid bright green. On a deeper level it seems to fit, because this scent has been described as having an incense note that pierces through the initial sweet berry and floral blast. I find the sweetness to be appealing and while it’s quite potent, it’s countered by some kind of spiky note, which I can’t quite identify. It might be orange combined with the woods and resins.

If you want a minor treat I can thoroughly recommend Woody Sticks ( Stabilo brand). They are soft chunky pencil/ pastels that you can draw with, smudge, or turn into watercolour paints by layering on water ( on your drawing) or by mixing with water ( on your palette). They are really fun and handy for using outdoors. Plus you can use then over your watercolour painting for details.
Glad the shots went well. Funny how needles seem to get bigger and more painful the more you have them.

AE is a power house! I had a bottle way back in the day and remember wearing it to work. I have a current version too, it’s slightly different in the opening but morphs mostly back to itself.

Yeah. On the way to work, I’ve seen a family of them on the roadside, looking to cross the street. Please stay where you are!

The one we saw was alone. At first I thought it was a moose, he was pretty big!

No, it was in a foil that you unwrapped and was a solid perfume that you applied on the skin. It was in a glass bottle and you could even lift the entire solid piece out.

It looked like a perfume stick or deodorant. You could buy it in the drugstore.

For today’s cp, Burnt Sienna totally fits my choice of SOTD, YR d/c Nature Millenaire, starting with the color and shape of its autumn leaf bottle, and then moving on to its slightly smoky cedar and sandalwood notes, and a touch of earthy iris and vetiver and some amber labdanum. I’m wearing the women’s version, which is my favorite fall scent ❤️, and I know pyramus is very fond of the men’s.

A busy day today. Yoga class this morning, then a trip to Aldi, went with Mr. Laila to get his Covid booster/flu shots (done with mine), now looking forward to dinner tonight at our favorite local seafood restaurant (family owned and operated since 1951),the next best thing to dinner on the Atlantic coast! Our trees are finally turning beautiful colors here, and we’re hoping to go on a mini-fall-foliage trip early next week.🤞

A special wish for you, Robin, to feel better soon – sorry you had to go through this again! 🤗 And a wish for a beautiful weekend ahead for all NST’rs 🍂🍁🥮

Running really late today! I had an appointment this afternoon that got pushed back by a bit, and it had a cascade effect on everything else. A minor delay that was no big deal.

PSA: for those of you who are TF Cherry+ fans, Nordies has a set of all 3 (Lost, Electric, and Cherry Smoke) in travel sprays. Pricey but tempting!

SOTD = Samsara EdP in the red bottle (as it should be!) for Red Dahlia.

The main notes I smell in Samsara are narcissus, jasmine, and sandalwood. It does have a Guerlain signature to the base.

Wearing Blanc de Courrèges, which to my nose is not white, but Viva Magenta!

It was a successful blind buy, and under my blind-buy limit of $20. Due in part to my sample addiction, by the time I tried Commodity Orris and decided I liked it well enough to check the price, it had been discontinued. I looked for reviews (is anyone else having difficulty getting to blogs through search engines?) and at Fragrantica to find something similar, and was pointed to BdC. It is just as advertised: Commodity Orris (orris and pink pepper) with a big, bright thwack of rose on top. The rose and the pink pepper together make it magenta for me. It’s fun, the pepper isn’t suffocating, the longevity is quite good, and it isn’t like anything else I have. I like it very much. I’ve worn it quite a bit in the last year, although I suspect it would be a bit much on a really hot day.

Excited to read everyone else’s choices for the day. I don’t have synesthesia, but do find that scents suggest colors.

Forgot to wish Robin (and anyone else who’s under the weather) a speedy recovery.

Oh, and many thanks to Colognissimo for the heads-up about the Etro discontinuations. My bottle of Shaal Nur is getting low, but I had been thinking there was no particular rush to get another one. A BUB is now on the way from a discounter, at a price that is still reasonable. There should really be a law that companies have to announce when they are discontinuing or drastically reformulating a perfume.
