Friday scent of the day 1/6

Posted by Robin on 6 January 2023 216 Comments

It’s the first Friday of 2023, plus Three Kings Day. RIP Fay Weldon. Our community project for today: wear a fragrance to match Viva Magenta, Pantone's color of the year for 2023.

Viva Magenta is brave and fearless, and a pulsating color whose exuberance promotes a joyous and optimistic celebration, writing a new narrative. [It] is powerful and empowering. It is a new animated red that revels in pure joy, encouraging experimentation and self-expression without restraint, an electrifying, and a boundaryless shade that is manifesting as a stand-out statement.

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I'm taking points for the cherry cough syrup + raspberry macaron in Guerlain La Petite Robe Noire Black Perfecto.

Reminder: 1/13 will be True Colors Friday. Tell us your favorite color, and wear a fragrance with that color in the name, or that reminds you of that color, or that has juice in that color, or ... ?

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2023, where I'll try (but obviously sometimes fail) to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I won’t be alone in wearing SL La Fille de Berlin, which is not only a dark magenta in colour but also smells of dark, slightly scary roses, thorns and all, my favourite sort of rose.

The local Yves Rocher closed up shop on the 31st. I went there hoping to find some clearance bargains but they hadn’t marked anything down, not even the Christmas limited-edition things in any significant way. They were boxing it all up instead, to send back to corporate, presumably. I likely would have bought a couple of the newer scents (Cuir de Nuit and Sable Fauve) if the price had been right. RIP YR.

Fille de Berlin here, too. I love this scent, and I love the new limited edition bottle. This is a case of the colour of the scent matching the scent itself.

Too bad about the YR closing-I like their products, and I think the price is pretty good.

Hope everyone has a decent Friday, and I look forward to reading what everyone is wearing :)

I wish we had Yves Rocher out here. Instead the only place I ever see them is Germany. That’s annoying that they didn’t mark anything down, though.

All the YR holiday stuff is on sale online, the only way I’ve ever been able to purchase. Since you seem to like many of the same scents I do, I highly recommend the Cuir de Nuit and Sable Fauve – my favorites of that line. I’ve bought them in the past when they were on sale.

    Hello all!

🌹Rose Tonnere for me, which might be lacking a bit of fruitiness for true Magenta but I think it works. I’ve been using this bottle a surprising amount. Fabulous stuff.

I’m off to work but tonight I’m going to see a screening of the new Tilda Swinton movie, The Eternal Daughter. I’ve been looking forward to it but it didn’t get a theatrical release here!

    Stay safe!

Jealous — I want to see that one. A local indie theatre is going to have it soon, though, I think. The problem is that they always play movies for just one or two nights, and they’re usually nights I can’t get away.

I’m wearing Jacomo # 08 today. I confess I thought of it because of the magenta design on the cap and magenta letters, but I actually think it fits. It’s an upbeat and confident sort of scent with its combination of fruit and spice. Lots of cardamom and ginger, tea, milk, and honey. Like I said, it’s confident and not aggressive. It has a sense of fun to it. Might be a tad too sweet for my taste on many days, but it’ll work today.

Very much want to see The Eternal Daughter! I watched the official trailer and was, of course, enthralled by Tilda Swinton’ s performance.
Enjoy and report back if you don’t mind.
P.S. E-mail me if you’d like to try Mohur Extrait. I’m at arzeznik in the insufferable land of comcast which also has a dot and a net at the end.

Chanel Egoiste for me. The sweet, stewed red fruit in this is spiced with cinnamon and sandalwood, and it conjures up a shade close to Viva Magenta.

I’m claiming CP points in Lush Rose Jam. It’s maybe a bit more pink than a true magenta, but it certainly has the volume tuned to the same level.

It looks like this CP will shape up to be the battle of cherries and roses!

    Happy Magenta Friday!

I’m in SL Tubereuse Criminelle because the color could be considered magenta-ish (well enough to get CP points at least 😊) and I love it. Because of the opaque gratte ciel bottle, I didn’t fully appreciate the color until I decanted some to carry in my purse.

FYI-I corresponded with Jeffrey Dame yesterday via email and he will have Cassis, Rose and Sandalwood again this summer. I know some of us thought it was discontinued. Also, in January (now) he is offering a new gardenia scent in small bottles.

Going along with Socks’ idea for CP points with Amouage Myths Woman. I love the ombre with magenta bottle, and the scent is warming to me. But given some of the reviews it has on Fragrantica, I’d say one does need some boldness to wear it! It was love at first sniff for me, carnation, ambergris, and some sweetness coming from some of the other notes. An elegant animalic floral – and with oakmoss. Robin, you smell wonderful in Black Perfecto. I think Guerlain created a great signature perfume with BP, for people who like a cheerful, lingering scent.

    Hey perfume friends!
I’ve been lurking this week. Just trying to get back into the swing of things. I went back to work on Tuesday and I’m so thankful that 1. it was a short week, 2. I no longer have a position where I am on my feet for my whole shift and 3. I no longer work 12 hour shifts! I’ve been reaching for easy scents all week….Tam Dao, no 5 L’eau and Glossier You. I am feeling much better each day, just a little stuffy nose and slightly stiff neck are hanging on for symptoms. Luckily, (knock on wood!) no one else in my family has gotten it.
Today’s my day off and I had a dental cleaning this morning. I’m back in Glossier You and can’t even really smell it on myself, but about half way through my cleaning the hygienist says to me “random question, but what perfume are you wearing?” Me, with shocked face “you can smell it through your mask?!” Hygienist “yes, and you smell fabulous!” You guys, I never get perfume complements! It totally made my day, and helped to make a dentist appointment pleasant.😆

SOTD = Tom Ford Lost Cherry

    CP-compliant!

Thanks for your comments on repurposing wide-mouth candle jars!

I’ve always lamented the fact that I expect all banks to be within a short 10-15 minute drive from my house. One such bank is PNC Bank where I was last at in late 2019 or early 2020 … going through highways and underpasses etc etc even though technically it is not far. Now that interest rates on CDs are quite good, I am not satisfied with nor should I be on getting barely $1 per month on a balance that could buy a decent new car in cash. Anyway, I finally found one on my way home on Tuesday right on Madison Ave. – of course I passed this 99.9% of the time but just never thought to register it on my brain. Anyway, I went today to close my accounts and will be ready to convert them to CDs at another bank. At this time, I wouldn’t accept anything lower than 4% (APR is lower due to how the accrual works).

I have two more banks to deal with but hopefully they will go smoothly and I can convert there, assuming of course that the interest rates ate favorable.

Not sure if you have a financial consultant/planner, but they can also find you good rates on CDs. In fact, ours found us a good rate from a bank we go to, however if you would walk into our bank, they can’t give it to you. How crazy is that??? Pretty bad when the broker can get it for you, but the employees at the bank can’t.

I know it sounds stupid as a consumer, but as someone who’s worked in financial services for a long time, it doesn’t surprise me. Advisors are a different channel and the pricing is different. A bank’s retail pricing for individuals will generally be somewhere around mid-market, looking at what their competitors are offering individuals (unless there’s some reason they really want money in that vehicle or don’t). Advisors will be looking for higher returns on investment vehicles, and so the bank prices competitively for that channel, but what’s “competitive” is different.

No. I have been managing my own finances but one never knows. My relationship bankers keep asking me if I want to have one and the one time I did (to test him out), my investment has not grown much over the past 6 years.

My husband was a financial consultant for years. When he retired, we decided to go to a man he used to work with that went with a different brokerage firm. We have been very happy with him. My husband wanted me to be comfortable with our lawyer, accountant and financial advisor in case something happened to him. It has taken alot of the worry out of things for me.

U.S. savings accounts are priced insanely low, I find (I have a U.S. account that’s paying me 0.01% right now…while the going rate in Canada is 1.5% on a savings account). So yeah, CDs make a lot of sense in this market!

Tell me about it. I wouldn’t cry over my one main checking account as the balance fluctuates quite a bit but the savings – ugh. It almost doesn’t pay to keep a balance in savings.

Yeah. My U.S. bank will pay me more — all of 0.9% — if I keep $1mm in savings. Honestly? If I had $1mm in loose cash, why would it be in a savings account?

Both just because I felt like it, and for the CP…but not for the colour but because I think it ‘revels in pure joy, encouraging experimentation and self-expression without restraint, an electrifying, and a boundaryless [scent] that is manifesting as a stand-out statement’

My pick is April Aromatics Wild Summer crush, with notes of grapefruit, mandarin, yuzu, and other citruses – blood orange, perhaps? – plus Uhuru Rose Otto. All of these bring intense shades of pink, including magenta, to mind. I like grapefruit and blood orange now and then but I do love Cara Cara Oranges and I would like to alert everyone that they are in season right now in US and you owe it to yourself to try them, it you can find them in store. They have beautiful dark pink flesh and unique flavor that’s like a sweet orange with hints of blackberry, raspberry, and rose.

    SOTD!
Givenchy Ysatis, from my vintage bottle. If you squint the color of the packaging could be magenta, but to me it’s more about the description of the color above that ties in with Ysatis.
It’s a joyful exhuberant perfume, and some might say a real challenging experiment for a guy to wear an 80’s powerhouse perfume that was marketed at mostly women.
Love these big bouquets from that time!

I was going to wear Lost Cherry, but last night my samples of the new Guerlain Jasmin Bonheur showed up. So I sprayed myself with the whole 2ml sample this morning to get a really good picture of it.

It is very perfumey, not a fresh jasmine, with no indoles. I definitely smell the rose, lots of bergamot and a bit of iris. In feel (not scent) I would say it is closest to Rose Barbare or Cruel Gardenia. It is being compared to Misia, Après l’Ondée and Insolence on fragrantica but honestly I don’t get that at all, there is no violet and not much iris on me.

It is definitely a spring perfume and I think I will enjoy it in that season, layered with my Korres Jasmine body cream. It hasn’t dethroned all my other favorite jasmines, but I do plan to buy a bottle. There is a limited edition Matisse decorated box and special cap that will be released first, that’s the one I reserved at Bergdorf Goodman.

For today’s cp, when I looked at the color itself, my immediate response was ‘raspberry,’ not rose nor red. And to me, as a seasonal fragrance wearer, ‘winter’ + ‘raspberry’ = Givenchy’s original Hot Couture, and that is my SOTD. It is just as warm and comforting yet sensual and sexy as I found it to be when it debuted. Although I do like the color Viva Magenta and I do wear this color sometimes, I don’t think the written description fits this scent; to me it describes a true, clear, vibrant ‘red’ fragrance and that is not what this one is.

No special plans for the weekend, just pizza tonight and putting away some of the holiday decorations this weekend – at least half of them are ‘winter’ decorations so they will stay up til Valentine’s Day. Weatherwise, while I’m grateful to not be living in California or Buffalo, our news is reporting that despite our mild temps we’ve had only 90 minutes of 🌞thus far in 2023 but are promising some this weekend. Boy, do I ever need it!🤞

May the ☀️ shine on all NST’ers this weekend!

The almost record breaking warm temperatures have moved on from my location. The temps are now back at a seasonal average. No more running around without a coat or jacket for me!

SOTD = Atelier Cologne Rose Anonyme. I always think of Lucasai whenever I wear this one. I sniffed Samsara, and that one wasn’t the right color, even though it smelled fantastic. I couldn’t find either of my samples of La Fille de Berlin but came across Rose Anonyme during my search. One little whiff was all it took to convince me that YES! We have a winner and a color/perfume match! 🌹🌹🌹

More rain, but the temps are above 50 so quite comfortable other than that.

I’m in Une Rose de Kandahar from my lovely big cobalt pentagonal bottle. Such lovely stuff, not really magenta to me, but as previously mentioned, more of a deep beet, cranberry, raspberry damask colored scent. For some reason I always picture a medieval dress a la John Williams Waterhouse’s Jason and Medea, as well as many other examples of dresses painted by the pre-Raphaelites. I think I’m just a frustrated romantic at heart.

Commando for no good reason. Kept meaning to put on Borneo 1834 but was so focused on an unprecedented desire to organize my home office that the fragrance never happened. But there was much shredding.

Wanted to post a link to an essay on the new Pantone magenta by Kate Davies, one of my favorite knitwear designers and a historian. Apologies if it’s already been shared here.

Shredding is a very under rated sport! 😀

You are welcome! Kate is a terrific scholar and writer; if you are interested in textile history and knitwear design, her blog and books are a treat.

I already wore Lost Cherry on Monday because I had a craving after seeing that TF is releasing two more cherry perfumes. So today I opted for DSH Eau Cerise to still cover the cherry bases. Thanks to another NSTer for mentioning it earlier in the week thus reminding me about it!

On an unrelated note, I’m curious what you thought of your new Stroopwaffel fragrance?

I like Stroopwaffel, but I don’t love it, at least not yet. It’s less overtly gourmand than I was expecting and more perfumey gourmand. It smells very nice though, but so far the two times I’ve worn it have been during busy days where I can’t pay much attention to it. I’ll wear it again soon on a work from home day when I’ll remember to really sniff it and gather my thoughts better.

Well, I chose to indulge in a bit of fantasy for the CP. I’m imagining myself in a black velvet sheath gown (and imagining that I have the physique to pull that off, which I emphatically do not), accessorized with a deep magenta feather boa, elbow-length magenta kid gloves, and magenta silk stiletto heels, and I’m holding a raspberry martini in one begloved hand and a magenta silk fan in the other. My scent? Cuir de Russie, of course.

Well, you look AND smell fabulous! Magenta gloves sound divine. (I am now imagining a pair for myself!)

Magenta reminds me of the 80’s.
This morning I put on a dab of LouLou. I thought it was a pretty good match. After it wore off I decided to switch to Flowerbomb Ruby Orchid. I would say the bottle is magenta.
After working tonight I will have the weekend off. I need the rest because next week is the dreaded INVENTORY! Yes… again. Lol.
    Happy Weekend everyone!

Dang! That inventory seems to roll around about every 6 weeks! I HATED it when I was in retail. Absolutely HATED it! I hope it goes fast for you! 👍🏼

This reminded me of a job I had when I was barely 21, working for a beer and wine distributorship. Once a month we had to do after-hours inventory, and the warehouse manager usually plied me with a small dixiecupful of something like cold duck, which was a kind of wine sweet enough to go down really easily for 21-year-old me. Ahh, good times.

Taurerville Rose Flash over here. Definitely qualifies as self expression without restraint. One spray last at least a full day. I was considering it for last week’s Jane Austen theme for Lydia Bennett, the epitome of romantic self expression without restraint!

    sotd = Myrrh Eglantine

not really a magenta scent, but roses seem to me a best choice (of many best possibilities) for a fun Friday playing with perfume.

I tossed the stash of bottles and samples, looked for something else, but ME grasped at my fickle heart. Thank you, NSTers and Robin, for the scented adventures. :)

Late to the game today…. I wore Kenzo Amour from the magenta bottle, so I think that works. I rarely wear it, but it’s a nice scent.
