Friday scent of the day 9/8

Posted by Robin on 8 September 2023 195 Comments

Happy Friday! It's also Star Trek Day and International Literacy Day. Our community project for today: wear a fragrance with saffron, if you have one.

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

It's hot out there — again! — so I'm happily copying all of you who took saffron points in Hermès Eau de Néroli Doré.

Reminder: on 9/15, we're off to Italy! Wear a perfume that is named for a place in Italy, or that reminds you of a (real or imaginary) trip to Italy, or that features an Italian ingredient, or ?

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2023, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

    Hello and TGIF!
I had to resist BR540 for todays CP and I went for one of my favourites from Amouage, Overture Woman – Apply brandy spiced with saffron, served on a leather table. So, so nice.
It’s been raining giraffes and elephants (forget cats and dogs) as the weather observatory claimed it to be the heaviest rainfall in 140(!) years. I hope everyone else has much nicer weather!
I am in a nostalgic mood these days it seems. Re-watching Downton Abbey for the 3 time.

Funny-I read that as apple brandy, and didn’t understand the correction. Gotta love the auto correct/typo mistakes 🙂

    You smell great, Robin!

I thought about wearing Saffran Troublant today, but as Hajusuuri said yesterday it is TOO HOT AND HUMID for it. So I am wearing OJ Ta’if for the CP.

Having my second cup of coffee and a guava turnover.
    Happy Friday! ☕️

I was thinking about Safran Troublant, too, but it’s supposed to be getting quite hot here too-so Neroli Dore bath wash and that excellent body balm they make. I like the Hermes body products – they cleanse well, and the scent really lasts. My bathroom smelt fantastic when I left.

Only six hours left in the work day and I’ll be reaching for caffeine and sugar to get through-hope Friday is good to the NST community.

Damn the heat and humidity, I’m going for Songe d’un Bois d’Été.

Got to smello Tobacco Honey, Deep Dark Vanilla and Heaven Can Wait yesterday. Tobacco Honey was the winner. Heaven reminds me of Guerlain Lui and Deep Dark Vanilla was just woody on me.

    Good Morning-
This morning I am boiling some water to blanch the tomatoes to make sauce today. I am volunteering today, but not at the library, another organization I am involved with.

Question: I see the city exclusive scents are at Le Labo-does anyone have one that I must try as I will be down that way next week. Is there one that has beautiful silage..or something unique?

Black Saffron today for the CP. Points!

Enjoy the “second summer” weather for my new englanders

Safran Troublant. It has that sort of medicinal smell that I love, bolstered with rosy vanilla. It’s fascinatingly unsettled. When I got that set of three spicy L’Artisan scents (before they eventually added them all to the main line), my first love was the chocolate/red-pepper one, but then ST took over: I traded away the other two and their brocade case, but kept ST and eventually emptied it — thank goodness I had already bought a backup bottle.

Speaking of which: the bottle is that 7-sided one with the matching cap, so different from the rounded cap from the previous octagonal bottle. It’s made of zamac and so extraordinarily heavy that this morning I weighed it: the almost-full bottle without the cap is 143 grams, the cap itself 71 — so just the cap makes up a third of the weight of the capped bottle!

Butting in to say Piment Brulant is a favorite of mine. Fruity red pepper, tomato stem, and the barest dusting of butter cocoa. It smells like rain to me!

Personally, I cannot smell any cocoa/chocolate at all in Piment Brulant. It is a fresh peppery scent – it smells of pepper flesh, not the dry powder. I love it.

Also in the Hermès Eau de Neroli Doré, since I remembered my husband had some once. I pawed through his scent drawer and found it. I may have to steal this one. Not a lot left in the bottle, and I don’t think he wears it much.

It’s amazing how the weather here knew that summer tourist season is over. Boom! We are in 60s, and yesterday was decently chilly. I had trouble sleeping last night and heard our heat/AC come on, which was confusing. My husband, the temperature wimp, had set it to heat at 70 degrees. What?? I fixed it.

I chose Ganymede for the CPF. Right now it’s in its “gorgeously beautiful” phase, which alternates with a “weirdly wonderful” phase that is, to borrow a phrase from pyramus, fascinatingly unsettled. I love it, as long as I’m in the mood for it, and remember to spray very lightly as it’s powerful. Hey, happy Friday everyone!

I’m wearing Felanilla for the CP today. It’s going well with a cool morning.

If I get very, very lucky (but I am not holding my breath), I may get the last panel of glass for the shower today, and have the vanities finished tomorrow (with the exception of the pulls, which the designer waited way too long on and now I have to wait 4-6 weeks for). I hate this end phase of renovations, where there are just one or two last things that need to get done and it seems to take much longer than the rest of the renovation for them to get finished.

EONS. Panel went in today and the silicone has to dry until Sunday.

Newly painted vanities and lights were slated for tomorrow, but no, almost 3 weeks after ordering the lights are still in a suburb and won’t be in town until Monday.

These last bits take forever. But I am loving Felanilla to getme through it. 🙂

    Hello all!

I’m in a tiny drop of Saffron Hamra, the uber spendy attar from Amouage. It was apparently inspired by wet clay and somehow it rather luxuriously does. It lasts forever, which it would need to for that price.

Only one class today but I’ve got in my head to finish a good amount of homework before the weekend officially starts. I’m going to get started right after my breakfast.

    Have a great weekend, everyone!

No points in Lubin Kismet today, but blessedly cooler after the rain yesterday.

BF and I are foolishly trying to renovate my apartment during the hottest summer LOL. We’ve painted, installed new flooring and baseboards, and built a buffet out of two kitchen cabinets. After avoiding big box home improvement stores my whole life, Lowe’s is now my happy place.

I’m also on a decluttering journey and trying to live with less. Maybe by 2025 I’ll have it all done 🙂

Ah, decluttering. I find it’s easier with time. After the last reno 2 years ago, we put a bunch of stuff into the storage space, and I’ve just now realized that I’ve never missed it since, so it’s time to go. Also, after the bathroom reno I had a sudden realization in the storage space that all those random paint cans I was keeping because all the eco paint companies went out of business after the 2018 lawsuits and I needed those paints for touch-ups…are no longer needed, since we’ve redone the bathrooms. Also the leftover paint from when we painted Ockeghem Teen’s room when we moved in, 13 years ago, and have long since redone.

Renos are great for that — kudos to you!

The temps may not feel like Autumn, but the sky has changed over to an autumn hue. And it’s dark about 45 minutes earlier now.

SOTD = L’Artisan Parfumeur Safran Troublant

I am scent twins with many of us. Lucky to have these remnants plus a BUB. Points for the CP as well!

It’s been so hot and humid that I’ve taken to only open a sliver of my kitchen window black out curtains. This too shall pass as jalapeño reminded me of a cooling trend; however, even though the path is still uncertain, I am keeping watch over my friend Lee.

I recently discovered I had an unsniffed sample of Saffron Veil by Phoenix Botanicals. I tried a tiny bit about a week ago and am giving it a full wearing today. It’s a nicely spicy scent, very warming, with a detectable tuberose absolute note under the spices. It’s an easygoing companion for a busy workday.

I will caution that this smells like pure tuberose absolute, which is more medicinal and spicy, a bit hard to describe. It’s not the big in your face sweet narcotic tuberose.

I was saving BR540 for the cp, but it’s still quite humid here even with the cooler temps and I just wasn’t feeling it so I’m in 31 RC.
It was overcast this morning, then it sprinkled, now the sun is trying to peek out.🌞

After the Labor Day cp last Friday I got to thinking about Abel Nurture again. I checked the bay where there just happened to be a mostly full bottle up for auction with an extremely low starting price. I just won it this morning for 7.50!😳🤩 Plus the five dollars for shipping, I’m gonna call that perfumemath free! I hope it’s real, but even if it’s not, I’m out the price equivalent of two lattes.

For today’s cp, I chose Givenchy Ange ou Demon, which I never knew had a saffron note. Haven’t worn it in awhile and it’s smellin’ good today!

Luckily I had 2 samples to take with me today as I’m posting this from deep in the foothills of Appalachia in NE Kentucky at a mountain music festival. We’re on our way to a fiddle gather’n, followed by an old time banjo gather’n, followed by a dulcimer gather’n (which I’m hoping will inspire my [very] slow and [not very] steady progress in learning this beautiful instrument when I return home. The performances are held in a small outdoor amphitheater nestled deep within the woods. But there’s always lots of jammin’ everywhere, with much of the music the tunes brought here by the original settlers from England, Ireland, and Scotland and played – and learned – in each other’s homes cuz it was never written down.

Wishing everyone a beautiful weekend ahead!🎻🪕🎶

Greetings from Nyons, late last evening when I arrived the main square smelled of lavender, the distillery must have been in use during the day.

There will be no smoothie of the day, the blender is at home, instead fresh fruit from the market, tonight it was green gages, I think it’s the right translation, we call them reine claudes, they are plums and delicious, also picked up figs from a wild tree. Weather is gorgeous, while some parts of France are experiencing a late heatwave.

Proud to have thought of the CP, I packed a mini dab bottle of Néroli Doré, it smells so good, I hope it won’t get discontinued.

Chilly Friday here. I dug out my bottle of DK Black Cashmere for the CP. I know how much love it gets from so many, but sadly I am not among you the appreciators. (Rec’d my bottle as a gift from a generous perfumista some years back.) I have never been able to get past my perception that it smells just like spice gumdrops taste. I’m wearing Cuir by Lancôme. Someone was wearing it yesterday and mentioned it had saffron, so here I am.

I’m completely knackered. Work is busy, finishing a big translation which has had quite a few hiccups over time. Plus the person reviewing is keeps delaying. He is a brilliant translator but crap at time management. On top of that my very elderly parents need help, but refuse to get any, and kind of forbid us (their 3 children) to organise it for them. It’s both annoying and very concerning. I hope I will be more reasonable and realistic at that age, if I manage to get that old, of course.

On the bright side, I have two weeks of holiday planned and I will be leaving next weekend. I’m so looking forward to it.

Busy busy week, and I totally forgot the theme of the cp this week.
    SOTD!
Donna Karan Gold.Lovely lily fragrance on a lovely sunny day!
Finally got down to Skins and tested some newbies:
Ganymede Extrait:heavy on the immortelle but lovely.
Heaven can Wait:Definitely has the JCE sheer signature, but a lovely Iris-Geranium note.Something also carries the iris-note quite far in the drydown and I love that.
The 4 perfumes from Off White(Solution 1-Solution 4).I ADORE the bottles, one of them smells pretty much like Elizabeth Arden Blue Grass, but they are overall nicely done!(and I like the 4×7,5/15ml discovery sets offered)
D.S.&Durga I don’t know what was extremely forgettable.
Penhaligons Legacy of Petra is also well done, but it smells too familiar to a thousand perfumes that came before it.
All in all a great-smelling day!

Productive day today, despite it being hot and steamy once again. Mailed some things at the Post Office, filled the truck up with gas, and made a batch of chili. Teflon kitty was begging for both the meat I used in the chili and the sour cream, but I couldn’t give her either. She’s on a limited diet until late Sunday. I feel like such a meanie…

Yesterday we had the Realtor over looking at our place. He was happy with the placement of all our furniture, so all that’s left is decluttering. Then we can take photos to start the sale process.

SOTD = L’Artisan Safran Troublant, from the Sample Stash. This blooms beautifully in hot weather! I like it much better than the first time I tried it.

There are guidelines for how your place should look for those real estate photos. I have the handout on the dining room table.

Teflon kitty! Glad to hear she’s wanting chili ingredients!

Yeah, the whole real estate thing — just had this conversation the other day. So many people in our city pay to “stage” their houses to sell them, but then you basically have to move out while they’re staged. (We have a lot of foreign buyers who are investors, and they want generic homes.) We sold our last place unstaged (didn’t have a choice, we had a 1-year-old and trying to erase her crib and toys when we live in a city with no family around was impossible, all we could do was tidy and trust we had decent taste), and it didn’t seem to hurt us. We bought our current home unstaged, because it had personality (though not our personality so we did paint when we moved in).

I just saw an article in the Washington Post citing an academic study that many people now are renovating their houses to be what they think buyers want, even if they’re not selling, because of the influence of HGTV. That’s never been my guiding principle, but I guess I’m against the grain. 🙂

I’d say, definitely put things away, but allow your house to have personality. You never know how that might help others feel like they could live in the space. 🙂

        Thanks for the info!

The Realtor said that we can pretty much keep most of our belongings in place, which was nice to hear. Means a lot less work for us.

It seems that townhouses are quite the hot commodity in my area. People are getting tired of single family detached houses and the yard maintenance that comes along with it. I’ve seen at least 3 new townhouse developments being built in the last year or so here.

Glad for you things are moving along nicely, good luck with organizing clutter, poor Teflon losing on tasty morsels, spoil her a little bit when the treatment is over.

Teflon has only 1 more day left on the bland/restricted diet. She will definitely get a little dab of sour cream when it’s all said and done.

I wore a green tea oil perfume today so I am definitely not cp compliant.

Yesterday I walked the golf course (hubby golfed) with 3 ladies, all with the name “Judy”! They were very fun and we discovered that 2 of them are neighbors to each other, and that they live very close to us. My sotd was sunscreen (my feet are still recovering from the walk).

    Happy Friday, everyone!

A green tea oil perfume sounds perfect for hot and sticky weather.

It really is! Summer is still going to be around here for awhile so I will get some more use out of it. Thankfully the nights are cooler though.

I looked for a clip where he says Judy Judy Judy. Apparently though he never said it 3 times. Only once. It’s a nice clip anyway.

It is a nice clip! I can hear the “Judy Judy Judy” from somewhere so I know it’s a thing.

And that’s also my sister’s name, so it made me chuckle. Very popular name back then!

I have a cousin named Judy. Definitely one of those generational names.

I got a Hermes travel set a couple months ago and added 24 Fauburg into the mix. It is really pretty but a bit overwhelming. I am not a huge white floral person. It is starting to calm down a bit, and I think I like the base. I am kicking myself for not getting on the Neroli Dore bandwagon again.

24 Faubourg is too much for me too, although I do think it smells good. It just isn’t me.

Late to the ‘welcome, weekend!’ party, but claiming double CP points for layering Safran Troublant (in good company) with L’Eau de Tarocco. It was too hot earlier to wear only ST, so I started with just one spritz of that and added the Diptyque. It worked pretty well!
I used to have an original bottle of this, and guess how many times I’ve told myself, “shoulda kept it” since I’ve been wearing it today? 😬 I’m wearing it from a decant which I swapped for with a lovely NSTer because I’ve been missing it for a while before this, too. Remembering that the reason I let it go was because it went too sweet on me, and now it doesn’t seem to be doing that. Huh.
I had no idea that saffron was in so many gorgeous scents! Today has been like reading about a treasure trove of jewels.

I wore Agent Provocateur for the cp today. I also thunked a travel spray of TF Eau de Soliel Blanc.
The weather has turned and I might have to think about turning the furnace on soon.

I have AP, but totally forgot about that one; smelling great! Congrats on the thunk.

It seems early to have to turn up heat. Funnily for our otherwise similar tastes Agent Provocateur didn’t work for me, long time ago, don’t remember why, but I have and love l’Agent.

Pretty sure that L’Agent is high grade Unobtainium at this point. I don’t even see it on Evilbay.
