Friday scent of the day 5/19

Posted by Robin on 19 May 2023 182 Comments

It's Friday and National Notebook Day. Our community project for today: Dealer's Choice, edition 7. Propose a theme for a Friday community project, and wear a fragrance that fits your theme.

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

Continuing with my (lame, I know!) theme of “wear what you never got around to putting away since last time you wore it”, I’m in Kenzo Air.

Reminder: on 5/26, there will be a community project, and I will announce it by Monday! Sorry I am behind.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2023, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Had several CP possibilities in mind, and have been enjoying reading everyone’s. Finally decided on “Perfumes I’d Never Have Tried if Not for NST’s Swapmeet. ” Today’s is Les Indemodables Vanille Havane. Love the crazy-boozy opening, and all the rest of it too. I like Babycat, but I might have picked this instead in a pick-one situation.

Isn’t Vanille Havane soooo delicious? I adore it too, can’t get enough of the opening.

    Scent of the day is

    Safari by Ralph Lauren

for my narcissus focused week Au delà Narcisse, Dryad, Eau de Narcisse Bleu, Romanza

As an option for today I also had Tabac Tabou, but the lovely sunny weather and friday mood just called for Safari.
Safari is so much more than narcissus but the note is quite prominent to me. And its such a happy fragrance to me. Instant good mood when I smell it ☺️

Safari is gorgeous!! I never particularly picked it the narcissus. I adore that green opening though.

One of my favorites, but for the galbanum, rather than the narcissus. I like narcissus, and just got a bottle of Dames soliflore Narcissus, but I haven’t tried it yet.

        I have Dame’s as well… in a rollerball… its been a while since I wore it.
I remember it was lovely but a bit linear and one dimensional on my skin.

I love narcissus as a note, especially if it’s prominent! I have all these scents you mentioned, in some form, minis, samples and big full bottle of Au Dela but I am not familiar with Romanza. Have to look it up now!

I think Romanza is great but I dont think its a crowd pleaser. Its a bit sour and bitter.

Yeah narcissus is great and versatile.
Tomorrow I think I am going to wrap up the theme with Chloe’s Narcisse. That was my signature when I was 18 years old. I still love it and it still reminds me of that transitional phase… going from high school to university…

Safari smell soooo good, and with all those notes, it can be quite different from wearing to wearing. I’ll try and sniff out the narcissus next time I take it out.

    Hello all!

I’m in Emotionelle today, simply because I remembered how lovely it was and how long I searched for a bottle after the line closed. Bois de Paradis and Amoureuse are high on my want list, but since I’m on a no buy, they can just stay hidden for now.

Looking forward to a quiet weekend after the blitzkrieg of this class. I’ve started test-knitting a very cute sweater for a designer on Instagram. I was casting on last night in anticipation of watching a movie and knitting up a storm. And maybe some homework.

Robin, you smell great. My Air is just barely starting to turn but there’s not a lot of room to hide an off note in such a spare composition.

    Have a great day, everyone!

sotd = l’air du desert marocain + l’air du temps edt

Robin, were kinda sorta “air twins” today. 😁😁

My theme is to wear the oldest and newest perfume I could find. Double theme points for accidentally wearing two perfumes that begin with the same word.

laddm is on my wrists, one swipe of the brand spanking new solid perfume on each. It is very pine pitchy at the moment, hope it develops as the day goes on.

L’air du temps is from an old 1970s splash bottle. I dumped some down inside the front of my shirt this morning. I love it. 💞

I either smell like heaven or something else. 😆 Either way, Friday here I come!

My theme this week has been Adjectives: wear something that has an adjective in the name (and for me specifically an adjective-noun one-two). I saved Escada Casual Friday for today, because of course I did. It’s SO good: intensely floral, lots of carnations and jasmine, but butched up with angular spices and herbs up top and a lush chypre base of oakmoss, patchouli, and vanilla. It’s another one in a long list of scents I bought immediately upon smelling it, because I just knew. Discontinued for ages, of course, and so hard to come by that bottles of it are selling for $400ish on eBay (or at least they’re listed for that: I don’t know if anybody’s buying).

I’m continuing with my copycat cp and I’m in No 5 Eau premiere because pfsh wore it yesterday.

Happy Friday and Hakuna Matata!🦁 Oh my gosh you guys, The Lion King was sooo good last night!🤩 I loved every minute of it, it was even better than I remember. We had great seats, first row in the first balcony and even my teenager who was kind of meh about going came out all enthusiastic with a “that was so good!” I think I might even have her talked into going to see Les Miserables and Mamma Mia with me when they come.

Looking forward to the splitmeet tomorrow, I might have something being delivered today that I will be splitting.😉

In the final (knock wood) installment of my Whatever Will Feel Dry theme this week, I chose Papillon’s Spell 125. Incense scents always feel fairly dry to me, and this is a gorgeous one. I’ve been dabbing generously from a sample vial while holding myself back from purchasing a FB, but I can feel the caving beginning. 🥴

My mother informed me that she’s almost out of perfume so I gave her SJP Lovely and my partial bottle of White Cube since I have a backup. I don’t think she can smell Lovely which to my nose is mainly musk but she’s loving White Cube 😊

I’ve had an issue with a number of TDC bottles, including Jasmin de Nuit and Bois d’Iris. The top note seems to go off quickly and I wonder if it’s the bottle design (where the sprayer and bottle connect). Once the top note evaporates, the fragrance smells fine but it’s rough going until then.

Day 4 of Poetry and Perfume! Can I do it…? 😅

    The Envoy
    BY JANE HIRSHFIELD

One day in that room, a small rat.
    Two days later, a snake.

    Who, seeing me enter,
whipped the long stripe of his
    body under the bed,
then curled like a docile house-pet.

I don’t know how either came or left.
    Later, the flashlight found nothing.

    For a year I watched
    It as something—terror? happiness? grief?—
entered and then left my body.

Not knowing how it came in,
Not knowing how it went out.

It hung where words could not reach it.
It slept where light could not go.
Its scent was neither snake nor rat,
    neither sensualist nor ascetic.

There are openings in our lives
    of which we know nothing.

    Through them
the belled herds travel at will,
long-legged and thirsty, covered with foreign dust.

My SOTD is based entirely on that last stanza which evokes images of goats and their herders in the Middle East who often put bells around the necks of some goats in the herd because no fences. It’s dry and dusty in the region, which is where saffron was originally cultivated. So that means Safran Troublant for me today.

    Happy Friday!

I picked up a book of Hirshfield’s essays in the library yesterday called Ten Windows: How Great Poems Transform the World and started reading . It’s so interesting and there’s a chapter on haiku that ties in nicely with the weekend challenge. Thanks again for your week of poems. Sadly our library had none of her poetry books. Do you have a favourite volume of poems so I can “blind buy” a copy somewhere.

My theme is Living Dangerously. I’m doing the final check and securing my perfume boxes for the transport to the new house and as much as I love the modern all natural perfumes, my box of vintage perfumes loaded with currently banned and dangerous chemicals I calling to me. I went for vintage Mitsouko and dabbed it on my hand. It’s so glorious. Oakmoss was totally worth it even if it was going to make me reach for my asthma inhaler. Which it didn’t. I have super sensitive skin too and yet I’m not getting any reaction from it. I am glad phthalates and nitro musks were phased out, though. I’m going with a version of MossyBerry’s theme: wearing bottles/decants that I have thanks to NST — whether from a review on the site, a swap/split or the generosity of a perfumista here. Today I am in Eris Mx (also have been wearing Angelique Noire, Covet, Ashoka, Lost Alice, Fendi edt, and Eau de Gaga). I haven’t posted for a couple of weeks but I’ve been wearing fragrance as always!

We had a great time on my birthday camping trip a couple of weekends ago — winetasting, kayaking, hiking and campfires (even a yoga class). So much fun. Then after we returned, we had a guest for several days and then I got sick. Still recovering (COVID tests have been negative, so some sort of nasty head cold, but so far I can still smell!).

For the CP I decided on the theme ‘it’s over’ a perfume you used to enjoy but don’t like anymore. I would be wearing Youth Dew Amber Nude except that I so dislike it now that I couldn’t face it.

Today I wore Must de Cartier, made me happy all day and even though it was still going strong, tonight I am in Bellodgia or rather Au Bellodgia as my very vintage bottle of EDT indicates and it smells so lovely right now.

It’s amazing the turn around you did with Amber Nude. I’ve done that with a more than a few perfumes. For me it’s because of negative association. When that happens there is rarely going back. It becomes like wearing clothes that don’t fit right anymore.

It’s a beautiful fruity rose, though I actually smell more of the fruity notes than the rose in this first phase. Very nice!

It’s the last day of Whatever Gets You Going In The Morning–notes of coffee, tea, or chocolate. Today I’m wearing Zoologist Civet, for the coffee note. I follow PGA golf and if you haven’t seen it yet, Google Tom Kim to see the lengths to which a golfer will go to save a shot.

I have been watching the PGA for years and started watching the tournament yesterday but hadn’t seen that by Tom Kim. Yes, they will go to any lengths.

I guess my theme today is wear a perfume that is low-key and chill. I’m in Diptyque L’Eau Papier today, which I got my 50 mL bottle from Bloomingdale’s for $80.75 when it retails for $125 (they had the price at $95 on their site for a few days and they also gave me a 15% off offer). It doesn’t really smell like paper, but there’s something comforting about it to me in the combo of rice steam accord, mimosa, blonde woods, and white musk.

It’s been quite a week for me so I haven’t been able to comment since Monday. Tuesday morning we had my aunt and uncle’s old couch that still has a lot of life in it moved in and our old couch hauled away. It was a pretty smooth experience but stressful and busy leading up, as their couch is much bigger than our old one so we had to get rid of some things, clean, and organize to make room. We used the app TaskRabbit to hire someone to transport both couches and help move them out and in, and that was a great experience. We would definitely use this guy again! We also just got two new Ikea bookshelves to help finally get our books and movies organized, and I think we need to buy one more because we have too much media to fit in the two new shelves and our two old shelves. Time to go through the books to find some to donate!

Then Wednesday I had to go in the office and had a very social and busy day there. Yesterday I had meetings almost nonstop from 8:30 to 4. At least I got a lunch break.

Today is much more calm thankfully. Our weather has cooled down substantially with a high of 74. I’m still wearing a hot weather favorite though, which has been my CP this week. Today I went with Un Jardin Apres la Mousson. Yesterday was Un Jardin en Mediterranee during the day and Philosykos at night. I went commando on Wednesday, but Tuesday I wore Micallef Ylang in Gold.

My CP today is Spread the News, Share the Love. Wear a perfume that you loved so much that you felt the need to share it with someone else ( bought them a bottle, made a decant, gave them your bottle and then replaced your own, made them smell it on you or in the shop). My first thought was Feu D’Issey which I also bought for my mother ( and later stole back). But now it is Ganja which I now share with my husband.

A confluence of recent deaths associated with former coworkers, all from the same employer, has saddened my week. Two weeks ago, a former co-worker passed away followed by his wife’s passing last weekend. Also last weekend, another former co-worker who was my boss for awhile – one of the best – lost both his beloved wife to Alzheimer’s and his dear secretary of many years to heart disease. I worked with all three co-workers for many years, and all were long-time members of our community, so I knew everyone well even outside of work. Four wakes in two weeks is just too many!

A nice escape for me this week was our historic theater’s classic film series’ 60th anniversary showing of the second James Bond film, From Russia With Love. Oh, that Sean Connery ❤️!

And, on a brighter note, my lilacs in bloom this week inspired my cp, Just Look Out the Window! Whether you live in the city, suburbs, small town, or countryside and, regardless of the season, look outside your window and wear a scent that mirrors whatever Nature is doing outside. For me today, it’s YR’s long d/c Pur Desir de Lilas, my favorite lilac fragrance – floral but also green and a bit woody- smells like the real thing (Annick Ménardo, perfumer). Other lilac favorites I’ve been enjoying this week are Pacifica French Lilac, Gucci Guilty, Annie Oakley Morning Dew, and Alfred Sung Sha.

This weekend I’m looking forward to working in the garden, inhaling deeply, and listening to birdsong – my favorite wrens have arrived! Wishing everyone a nice one ahead!🪻🐧 🎵

In doing my chypre week, I’ve realised that my idea of chypre doesn’t always gel with others’ ideas. Looking at Fragrantica, Jubilation 25 isn’t described as a chypre, but to my nose it is very reminiscent of Mitsouko, so I’ll wear Jubilation 25.
Meanwhile, I wore Francesca Bianchi’s Lost in Heaven last night, it will be on my clothes for ever. It even survives the washing machine.

Wearing Chanel Paris-Riviera today. My hubby was up extra early, already moving furniture onto the backyard deck so he could rip out the disgusting carpet! I grabbed the scent I wore last night since it was handy. My theme has not been consistent but I’ve been trying to make some larger dents in my neglected bottles.

I realized this week when we tried to sell things on Market Place that people don’t necessarily want your stuff. We used to be able to sell or free-cycle things much easier a few years ago. No longer the case here.

I guess there’s no going back now with our floors. We have a person coming on Tuesday to give an estimate to install whatever we pick (still not finalized) and the old carpet is out! Temporary furniture is set up inside.

I’m in a townhouse development too, but people leave stuff by the Dumpsters. Sometimes it disappears within an hour or two.

The “pickers” come around here a lot less often than they used to.

So true about it being difficult to find takers for your stuff. Have a friend whose mom recently moved into assisted living, and my friend’s brother thinks a yard sale is in order. It was tough, but managed to keep my mouth shut!

We joked and said the freebies we listed that people would want us to drop them off!

It is hard. Buynothing is not very active in my town. Freecycle is a little more active, so is Craigslist. But luckily we have an active FB group, not part of any national organization, and that often works for me .

We had them on FB Market Place and a local website classifieds that we had great luck with before. I checked today and there’s so much free stuff on there that’s been listed for a few weeks.

I am stealing Nancyleandros cp and wearing a treasured decant.
TF Fleur de Chine. I bet I have been nursing this for about 7 or 8 years? I almost thunked it last year but chickened out. I will continue to enjoy it sparingly until the last drop.

You smell fantastic, lillyjo! I have a little screw top decant of that one too and can’t bring myself to even open the thing. You’ve inspired me to wear it. Thank you!

Better to wear it all and thunk it then have your treasure evaporate or go off!

Cartier Baiser Vole EdT today. I was in the office this morning and didn’t wear anything, then wanted something floral, green and lightly sweet. I got a bottle of the (discontinued) EdT from ebay recently, since I like th EdP but it has more sweetness and less green to it. So now I have both! Can’t go wrong with either but it is disappointing the EdT is discontinued as it is so light and fresh and pretty.
