Friday scent of the day 1/27

Posted by Robin on 27 January 2023 202 Comments

It’s Friday! Also, National Chocolate Cake Day and International Holocaust Remembrance Day. Birthdays: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Lewis Carroll, Jerome Kern, Bobby Blue Bland, Narciso Rodriguez and Alan Cumming. Our community project: wear a fragrance by Narciso Rodriguez, if you have one.

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I suspect I will not be the only one in Narciso by Narciso Rodriguez aka White Cube. (Also, I'm still catching up after spending most of yesterday in bed recovering from my shingles shot. I'll read the Thursday comments by the end of the day.)

Reminder: on 2/3 we're doing Picture Challenge, edition 8: Yayoi Kusama, detail from Women of Shangri-La, 2002. You can see the entire installation if you scroll down here (I cannot post it for copyright reasons). Extra reading: Yayoi Kusama at Wikipedia, Dot on: The rise and rise of Yayoi Kusama at Thames and Hudson, 'Determined to have her story told': Retrospective casts new light on Yayoi Kusama's seven-decade career at CNN, Yayoi Kusama: the world's favourite artist? at The Guardian.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2023, where I'll try (but obviously sometimes fail) to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I am wearing an old sample of Bois de Iles. Boy I wish I had a bottle of this. So understatedly beautiful.

Joining Robin and others in NR White Cube. It goes well with the sparkly piles of snow and ice everywhere. And the sun is shining! It’s not expected to last but I’ll enjoy it while it’s here. Have a great Friday, everyone.

I am wearing Narciso Rodriguez for Her in Color, the only NR in my collection.

Finally, the sun is out and the strong winds are gone. It looks like this is the last week in the 40s. Next week, temperatures will drop to the low 30s. Welcome, February! 🥶😫

    Happy Friday! 🌞

I think we will finally see snow in February. Right now, I can see thru the window snow flurries falling very fast. It was sunny in the morning and then suddenly it became very cloudy. According to the forecast it was supposed to be a sunny day! It is crazy!

Today I am in Songes-I just feel like wearing something up lifting these days.
I tried to do a week of Annick Goutal but I couldn’t because I only have 3 scents, and I drained my sample of Chèvrefeuile.

My plan today is to run some errands and curl up with one of my books

To the best of my knowledge, I have never smelled one single NR scent. Not even on my radar. No points for me in late-nineties Guerlain Samsara EDT, more angular than the plush, sanded-smooth EDP, but still wonderful.

    Hello all!

Tired and working a long day soon! I was sure I didn’t have a NR perfume until this morning when I remembered: Essence! I found a bottle last year for a good price and jumped on it. Sadly it doesn’t last as long as my day will be but it’s very pretty while it lasts.

    Have a great Friday everyone!

Not sure I want to actually WEAR Narciso. I may just sniff the roller ball and wear something I like better. Anyway, it will have to wait until after my exam this afternoon.

I love that article on the Australian aquilaria plantation!

Just checking again if anyone has tried this line:

I don’t have anything by Narciso, so I’m wearing Bijan for women. I finished watching We Are Lady Parts last night, which I highly recommend – it’s a comedy (or maybe a dramedy) about four Muslim women in London who form a punk band. Glad it’s Friday and looking forward to a nice lunch and pedicure on the weekend.

Taking CP points in Narciso Rodriguez For Her. My sample is the EDP acquired in 2015, according to the packing list (good grief, how time flies). I like NRFH, but can barely smell it. I was going to say that I had found other fragrances in its genre that I like better, but it turns out I haven’t — things that I thought were similar are all ambers according to fragrantica. So much for my discernment!

I just found out that there exists a perfume called La Belle et l’Ocelot by Salvador Dali

I fell in love with it’s bottle and I ordered it blindly, I don’t know the scent at all

Lots of reviewers say it is somewhat similar to Coco or Coco Noir and that it has a vintage vibe to it

It shares my all time favorite perfume Vol de Nuit scent family – chypre oriental, and it ought to have an animalistic note I guess, why else it would be an ocelot?

    Hoping for the best here)

I do have some perfumes, travel-size, from NR. They all have sort of the same name, annoyingly. But this morning I am in the slightly obscure but totally amazing Vachi by DSH. I think her website describes it best: “A luxurious sandalwood ‘gourmand’, of sorts, designed to impart nourishment, beauty, and comfort with notes of stone fruit, black sesame, and gorgeous florals of osmanthus, rose de mai, and champaca.”

How do you like the new Guerlain please?

I tried it this week and have mixed feelings. It has a retro/vintage vibe to me and I don’t discern the Guerlainade or Guerlain feeling from it. I get a greenness from it…maybe galbanum or something else which may be contributing to the vintage vibe too. If I had to define in 10 word or less..retro smelling sour, green jasmine powder bomb with ambroxan ;) ehaehaeh I shall have to try again.

I agree with your assessment, it does not smell like a Guerlain. There is a floral sharpness to it, with a green edge. My husband likes it, but I am less excited by it. I want to try it layered over my Korres Jasmine body cream.

For today’s cp I’m wearing Narciso Rodriguez For Her edt from a sample. Like Robin and several others, I really couldn’t smell it when I first sniffed it, tried a few of the others when they came out, couldn’t really smell much, and never bothered with them again. I’m not a big fan of musk anyway.

Getting ready to shower and change into something more appropriate for the day: it finally feels like January in Chicago with snow and cold temps ahead for the week. SOTD will be Caswell Massey Pure Frost edt, soap and body lotion. Its bergamot, Indian jasmine, Casablanca lily and vanilla add much-needed warm and comfort to the day. A winter favorite of mine. ❤️

Looking forward to our favorite Chicago folk singer tonight in his tribute concert to Pete Seeger 🎶, then we’ll be tucking in for the rest of a 🥶 ❄️ weekend. I’ll be making my favorite easy oven pot roast- it bakes slowly for 3 hours and the house smells so-o-o-o good! 😋

Wishing everyone a wonderful weekend ahead!

    I have nothing from NR.
I did have 12 hours sleep.
That makes 6 days in a row.
    It’s great!
post shower some Henry Rose Char – which I am kinda loving.

I was planning to wear Narciso white cube but then I got distracted with the idea of going to an estate sale.
It was opening at 11.00 am so after I drove my daughter to the metro , I went to this house filled with all kind of vintage items, lots of stuff, vintage heaven !! I was there specifically for the perfumes of course! After waiting outside in the cold for 30 minutes and yelled after because I forgot my mask in the car which I parked far because of the snow, they were panicked and sold me all the perfumes for a very reasonable price to get rid of me as soon as possible.
I got Mitsouko extrait never opened, Rumeur extrait, Miss Dior extrait and Dioressence edt for an amazing price.
I am wearing Rumeur which I find out of this world.

I wore White Cube this morning for the cp. Now I am wearing No.19 Poudre from my almost empty decant. I think I will wear it the next 3 days and thunk it over the weekend.
I received a notice to appear for jury duty in a few weeks. I am a proud American and understand the importance of my duty but ugh… the thought of being in a room with and having to talk with strangers has given me much anxiety.

There’s usually a lottery of sorts where potential jurors are selected randomly by number, and if your number is selected, you and the others selected will probably be asked some basic questions as a group by both the prosecuting attorney and the defending attorney — the process is called voir dire, and it’s how the attorneys weed out people they don’t want on the jury for one reason or another. They’ll describe the case in general terms, and ask potential jurors to raise their hands if, for example, the potential juror doesn’t feel they can be impartial given the type of case it is. One or both attorneys might want to ask a small number of follow-up questions individually of those who raise their hands, and those questions are asked and answered still in the large group of all the potential jurors. In my experience, the attorneys are very polite and reasonably kind to all potential jurors, and they understand that voir dire can be stressful for some people. But with any luck, your number won’t get called and all you’ll have to do is watch an orientation presentation and then while away a few hours in a jury pool room.

Hope this helps — good luck!

    • LizzieB says:

In my experience, people are just reading or doing their own thing if they’re not in a courtroom and just in the main jury room (they may even ask people to be quiet). If you are called into a courtroom, they may ask you to put reading materials away in order to pay attention. You’d only be spoken to or speak directly if your name is called as they are seating people on the jury (voir dire). Then the lawyers and possibly judge would ask you questions.

I’ve been called a number of times in different places. Sat on a civil case once. Both times I was called in NYC, everyone was excused within a hour or two because they had more people than needed. I was excused (tossed?) once after voir dire because both sides agreed they didn’t like me. Lol.

I’ve always managed to be dismissed in advance, but Mr. Ockeghem had to do jury duty years ago. He got called into the courtroom and it was some case involving a dog biting someone. He told them that he doesn’t like dogs (only sort of true, but he is a true cat person) and he was gone in a heartbeat.

Woot! I was thinking of wearing my almost thunking bottles until I thunk them so maybe.

Jury Duty – I’ve gotten called quite a few times and I usually take the opportunity to go out for lunch (from really cheap to the somewhat expensive), read a book or even a glossy magazine, or just scroll through my phone. One time I actually saw someone from the office (different group but we worked on several projects together); I gave him an earful (hushed, of course) about someone in his team who outright lied to me about why he was on our floor (he said he reported to someone on the floor which made no sense as I know this person and all his team members).

I’ve been called for Jury Duty about half a dozen times since age 21. Most of the time, I have been dismissed without having to appear at a courthouse.

The one time I did end up at court, I was in a big room with a bunch of other prospective jurors waiting assignment. Most of us were either watching a TV or reading books. No one really interacted. Then someone came into the room and said “All jurors above number blah de blah are dismissed. Your service is over and you can go home.” So I did.

Still sporting Angel’s Share today. Did make it to a Nordstrom and tested all the TF Cherry series, but when I asked about Bois Marocain (there was a huge poster in the TF beauty department) it was just crickets. The sales person had no clue what I was asking about and never offered to investigate. I didn’t see it with their sample bottles so maybe they hadn’t gotten it in yet? Anyway, it seems lately whenever I ask a question to just about anyone I get a blank stare back. Do these folks really known nothing about what their selling? Or are my expectations too high?

Was in my hotel room this morning and BAM! Someone unlocked my door with a key card and tried to barge in unannounced. I was getting dressed. No knock, no “hello,” no nothing. The only reason they didn’t get in was because I had the slide lock engaged. Turned out it was the manager who told me the room I was in was vacant..? Umm, no, I’m right here! Turned out they had messed up the room assignment. They should be grateful I had the slide lock engaged or they might have been blinded for life! 🫣

    Happy FriYAY!

I waited on a couple recently in our luggage area. After they made their decision they triple thanked me for helping them and expressed lack of service everywhere now. No training and so much turnover in jobs — almost no one has knows what they are doing.

I bought a pillow this week at a longstanding department store near me that is closing. Older SA knew how to use the remaining inadequately sized shopping bags to make a handle so I could carry it easily. This made me so sad because end of an era.

Yikes. Don’t get me started on hotel security…. I was once given a room that was connected to a meeting space. The main room had a big conference table. Two bedrooms in the “suite”. And, of course, it was one time where I forgot to pack my sleeping attire. Just as I’m falling asleep I hear the meeting room door open and see a light go on. Turned out they assigned the other bedroom to some guy who ran away quickly when he heard my voice call out. I hadn’t noticed there were two doors with different room #s to the same main room. I called the front desk and was almost in tears. Do you think I got any sleep??? Since then I’ve always thrown the slide lock.

Holy Krakatoa, that would have freaked me out, too! You know, it’s rare that I ever even turn the deadbolt unless I’m actually going to sleep, and I almost NEVER use the slide bolt because I feel they are completely ineffective. Lesson learned by this nitwit! 😯

I’ve been the person on the other side — with a key card that I’m trying to use to open the door for my newly assigned room, and then I hear a voice on the other side. Stupid hotel.

I honestly think Nordstrom may be trying to go in a different direction. When I was getting my MBA, they used to hold up Nordstrom as the prime example of using service as a differentiator. But every time I’ve been into a Nordstrom in the last five years, the service has been…unengaged at best. So maybe they’re trying to compete on…I don’t know what? It’s to the point now that in Canada, I just don’t bother with them, though my lizard brain still has it drilled in that they’re great for shoes. Their house lines are cheaply made, they carry very…ahem…curated selections of better lines, and their teen section only carries clothes that look as cheap as the polyester they’re made of. (On the other hand, their kids section is nothing but Burberry and Dolce & Gabbana…also no.) Basically, they don’t serve anyone in my family any longer.

The Nordstrom nearest me was originally so amazing — there was a grand piano on the ground floor and a live pianist! Now the restrooms are filthy and broken down, even though there are few shoppers. I’m not even sure why, because Macy’s in this same mall is always busy.

I’m commando because I’m going to my PT soon and don’t like to wear perfume there. I’ll think of something to put on later. No NR because I can’t find any–I am sure I have a sample or two but who knows where. I organized my samples alphabetically awhile back but then that project sort of fell by the wayside (as many do, alas!).

Nancyleandros wrote about our Galleria sniffing expedition the other day and covered most of the bases. We had a great time! A few added notes. We visited the fairly new luxe store Arabian Oud and discovered their bottle prices were not as exorbitant as expected either from the displays or the general ambience of the store, indeed, some a “mere” $150! There was a big variety and some were floral or had other notes, like fresh citrus, with barely any noticeable oud. I would like to go back sometime and try more. Also they had bins of our wood chips that you could buy–we smelled some but they don’t have any scent until they are burned (like incense, I gather). Interesting place and a good addition to the mall.

In Saks we were left alone to take our own good time to sample all the fancy Guerlains we could want, and we did! I fell in love with Angelique Noire. What a beautiful scent! I also tried MFK Gentle Fluidity Gold and Silver which I had not sampled before and really liked Silver. We tried a lot of the Ex Nihilo line which I’ve also not explored and I wound up buying (on impulse) a bottle of their Devil Tender. It’s a peach-suede combination with some other stuff in there, and somehow it just appealed to me as lovely and sort of gentle (also a very pretty bottle). They also have a quite beautiful lilac scent (but on the sweet side, as is probably inevitable).

Neiman-Marcus has dropped a few lines including Memo–that surprised me–and will be dropping Jo Malone (an SA told Nancy that). Interesting that they still have an enormous display of Creed. There are other more niche lines there like Amouage and the new exclusive (to them) Mind Games, with rather striking metallic and black bottles in chess piece shapes (their caps at least). I didn’t find any one of those I especially loved, which was good because they’re expensive. Overall we had good experiences with SA’s who were knowledgeable or, if they didn’t know something, would ask someone else who did (as when I asked about scents with a plum note).

Have a good weekend everyone! It’s chilly here but of course nothing compared to what you folks in the north have to deal with. I like having the chance to wear a long-sleeved top and a jacket for a change!

After some glorious days, we have rain for Saturday. We had a huge amount of rain a few weeks back, but not much recently, so gardens need it.
We’ve only been a bit damp, but Auckland, New Zealand’s largest city, is a real mess. Yesterday was record rainfall for a day, and Auckland gets heavy rain anyway, so it was extreme.
I’m contemplating my new bottle of Colony post-shower, but I’m having a very lazy start to the day, and I haven’t got to the point of an actual decsion yet.

I’m in La Curie Ossuary today, needing a bit of calm. We listed our condo for sale earlier this week so I’ve been a bit busy and preoccupied.

Working with our realtor this morning, I had to run out of our unit to catch my hubby before he went golfing so we could discuss an offer we received. I had my phone and keycard for the door, completely forgetting to put something on my feet. Caught my hubby by a millisecond and then came back to the condo after we discussed. Well, that’s the time my keycard failed. I then had to go to the Clubhouse for a new key. I was asked, “Do you have your id”? Um, no. Just my keycard and phone. I probably looked homeless or like a trespasser as I had no makeup on and was barefoot. Then I was asked what his phone # was. Thankfully I knew that answer and got my card. Off I went!

We may end up renting next year here if we do sell it; its only been listed 3 days. We’ve met so many nice people this time (who are also owners) so I’m sure we could rent off of one of them next time. We aren’t in any hurry to buy but if something comes up that’s right, who knows?!

I’m wearing my NR Musc for Her – Parfum Oil. This version is essesntially Egyptian musk oil from 2007? 2008? discontinued in 2011 and really lovely.

ThePerfumeShrine blog has a helpful post about some of the NR versions here (even though it’s a bit old): http://perfumeshrine.blogspot.com/2009/03/frequent-questions-differences-between.html

Happy Friday! No NR here. I’m sampling Olivier Durbano’s Heliotrope and really enjoying it even though I haven’t perceived any heliotrope as of yet. I’m not sure it will be able to emerge out of the incense that’s currently dominating! C’mon, heliotrope!

I read that it’s called heliotrope because there is a stone of that name, not for the flower. There is no heliotrope floral note in it that I remember.

Yep, that’s in the description on his website. He does list heliotrope in the notes, but it never made an appearance on my skin.

Total fail on the CP this week, and total fail on my SotD as well. I thought I was grabbing a sample of Diptyque Orphéon, when it was actually Eau des Sens. Orange blossom is definitely not cutting it today. Oh well!
I think I’ll sniff a few of the AbdesSalaam attar samples I’ve never gotten around to. That should obliterate all traces of the Diptyque, lol!

Continuing vintage week, I’m wearing No. 19 edt. Comparing it to a more recent version, it’s definitely more leathery and woody, less iris centric.

Joining the herd in white cube.

Second week of new job completed. They have been extraordinarily good in training. Just spending lots of time with me. And very organized. Impressive.

Amusingly, I’ve used a virtual background for all the video calls…a cafe with snow falling outside. Today it actually matched the weather here. My husband said the roads were quite nerve wracking…the main road goes through an area of a lot of open space, so blowing snow and drifting is common.

The roads are not great here either. No drifting in the city, but they are quite slippery. Glad the new job is going well!

Heh. My background is a wall with nothing on it. It felt like I was in a living mug shot, so I happily added a background. They’ve come a long way…less jumpy in the effect.

    Joining others in White Cube.
I had a scentless morning for a massage. I am really liking the new massage therapist that I’ve found. She’s like a muscle whisperer.
This afternoon I took myself to see Women Talking. It’s been awhile since I’ve seen a movie in an actual theater. Of course it wasn’t too crowded on a Friday, and it was the perfect way to spend a snowy afternoon. I know it’s up for a few awards and I hope it does win. It was, in a word: powerful.

Trying Yves Rocher My Shiny Vanilla today which was a blind buy around the holidays last year. A lovely, sweet vanilla w/ sandalwood. I detect some fruits and flowers too though they aren’t listed as official notes.

I also indulged in My Vanilla Garden which was the holiday release for 2021 and have no regrets on that one either. ;) Hat tip to Robin as she covered both releases and enabled my vanilla gluttony. 🤣

    So happy it’s Friday!

I’m sampling Jovoy Private Label today. The opening was really interesting: earthy, dusty, dry. It slightly reminded me of Borneo 1834 (although it’s been years since I last sniffed that), and I was eager to compare it to other patchouli scents. But it’s gotten much less compelling in the dry down, kind of a generic woody amber.

Running late today! Woke up with a headache this morning that hung around until lunchtime, so I had a slow start.

SOTD = Narciso Rodriguez Poudree EdT, aka Beige Cube. I smell like rose flavored marshmallows, which is rather fun. There’s a smidge of kitten fur musk in there as well. I would call this one an excellent office scent.

I know some people who have worked in extremely uptight offices in the past, and Beige Cube might easily fly under the radar there.

I was really happy that I didn’t have to take any painkillers for said headache!
