Friday scent of the day 5/20

Posted by Robin on 20 May 2022 249 Comments

It's Friday and Josephine Baker Day. Happy 76th birthday to Cher! Plus, happy World Bee Day. Our community project for today: wear a fragrance with a honey note or wear a fragrance inspired by wildflowers, or celebrate World Bee Day in some other way. (We did a honey project in 2017.)

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I'm almost forgot there was honey in Astier de Villatte Grand Chalet. I am wearing a drop since I haven't much left, and once again thinking I should really buy a bottle. (Same old story.)

Reminder: 5/27 is the start of Memorial Day weekend in the US. On Monday, we'll observe Memorial Day, but for today, we're celebrating the holiday's other meaning, as the unofficial beginning of summer. (In olden times, you could only wear white shoes between Memorial Day and Labor Day.) Wear something that fits your plans for Summer 2022! (If it's winter where you are, adjust accordingly.)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2022, where I'll try (but obviously sometimes fail) to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Not on project because I’m in Champagne, the obvious choice for such a momentous occasion as closing on one’s first house. It is expected to snow later today when it was in the high 80s yesterday. Our winter things were one of the first things we packed so had to dig through some boxes for a jacket. Since Grand Chalet basically means big house, I ‘m planning on making it the first perfume I buy after we move 😊

Cher! What an icon. I can still remember watching the Sonny & Cher show back in the mid 70’s.
I’d have gone with either Beige or Chergui to be cp compliant, but I’m out of Beige, and wasn’t feeling Chergui with this morning’s humidity so I’m in Sur Le Nil. New bottle! Just in time for the splitmeet.😀
Today is my Saturday and I’m on staycation until the 31st. Woo hoo! Plan on spending some time with my college girl and then I’ll take her up north next week for her summer camp job and visit my parents for a couple of days. I haven’t seen them in person since October. Looking forward to seeing them.
    Happy Friday!

I’m wanting to get to a couple estate sales this morning but my poor kitty was sick all over the place during the night and I now have a ton of laundry to get going. And dishes leftover from last night. Once I get done with everything, then I’ll get going as my reward. Happy Friday NST!

I hope your kitty is OK. I have one who has been throwing up quite a lot lately, but fortunately, only on the floor. I think he simply gobbles down his food too quickly, but I can’t figure out a good way to slow him down. I can try offering him less food, but with other cats around and eating nearby, that’s hard.

    Good morning and TGIF!
Sotd is Bee. Hello to my Bee twins 👋.
My cactuses have been blooming and I stayed up all night watching them. Now I am groggy. 😅
To those that are unfamiliar, the flowers, also called Queen of the Night, blooms for only one night and only during midnight. The blossoms are white and very elegant. Sadly, they wilt by sunrise.
    Currently drinking rooibos with honey.

Scents may be off the table for me, but I always have jars of varietal honey and blends for teas or cooking/baking around. My top two:
        * Big Island bees Wililaiki honey (peppery finish, great for grilled dishes). They have a few Hawaiian flora specific types. My care packages from HI usually include a jar or two, lol.
        * Heemans Watermelon blossom honey (lightly fragrant watermelon scent, lovely in tea or drizzled over yogurt mousse). It’s a local garden center and pick your own berries place that sells a few things for your pantry and bar. Their mead and ciders are really nice too.

I chose Guerlain Rose Barbare for the CP — I figure roses and honey ought to attract a few bees! There aren’t a whole lot of things in my perfume closet that have a honey note, so when I stumbled across mention that Rose Barbare actually has a one I had to unearth the tiny decant (it’s in a very cute little 3 ml rollerball). And it’s a bit of a mystery — I can’t find a record of where or from whom I acquired it, or the dabbers of Jicky and Vol de Nuit that are in the same little ziplock, all with matching labels. 🤷‍♀️ But no matter — it’s fate, I guess, and I’m really enjoying it!

I have always found that some chypres have a honey note to them: whether that’s some inherent quality of oakmoss or because those scents also contain phenylacetate I couldn’t say, but it’s always a pleasant surprise. Today I’m in probably my favourite honey chypre, Boucheron Pour Homme edp, which I thought was *wildly* grownup back in 1991 when I was still in my twenties and knew nothing. Even now, decades later, it strikes me as sophisticated, with the bone structure of a classic men’s cologne but the heart of a seventies floral chypre.

True re the chypres. Do own Ungaro’s Diva, which features a prominent honey note to my nose, but wasn’t up for it this morning (medical appt + fasting for the blood draw). Will now make up for the suffering with a substantial lunch, haha.

I was going to dig through my SL samples today, as that was my best bet at finding something with a honey note, but…no time to pull out all the samples. Cleaners are coming.

So I’m in CBIHP A Room with a View, thinking that it smells like a place bees might like to be.

Strong, gusty winds today kicking up lots of dirt/dust. Zoologist Bee here, however, my sample has darkened quite a bit and has gotten syrupy. Kinda yucky to spray on. Doesn’t smell too different just looks different lol.

I heard if one wants to attract bees and butterflies, plant some milk thistle. 🐝 Thank you honey bees, for all you do for us:).

Oh..speaking of BEES or related to bees..I saw, what is called, a Tarantula Hawk Bee/ Wasp. Like a week ago. It was HUGE. I thought it was a small bird at first..but as it got closer..the body and orange wings were unmistakable. It’s supposed to be one of the worst stings in the world. It’s prey, tarantulas. A bee that eats a tarantula alive..yep, it’s a pretty large bee. It’s apparently not interested in humans and leave them alone. The one I ran into was very much just focused on it’s own buisness..hovering close to the ground looking for, likely, dinner. Amazing looking but quite intense.

The less intimidating, Blue Mud Dauber Wasp..is another that I have come across not long ago. Quite a pretty color, dark metallic blue.

The bee world is quite fascinating.

Any place that has enough tarantulas to support a species that preys on tarantulas is a place I will actively avoid! I get squeamish with a daddy long-legs.

I love the bee and wasp world. But I struggle to appreciate the *details* of how some live, like one of our giant local wasps called the Cicada Killer. They are frightening to see but ignore humans as they go about…well ‘nuf said. I’ll take honeybees please and thank you. 😀

It’s no accident that the giant creatures in the Alien movies were based on wasps.

I happened to be “lucky” enough to be in AZ in the fall a couple years ago. That’s tarantula breeding season and they were ALL OVER! I find them fascinating so wasn’t bothered but most everyone else was high stepping with their eyes continually sweeping the ground on high alert. A couple didn’t zip their tent up when they got up in the morning and quite a surprise when they found 6 tarantulas in their tent. 🤣

I lived in rural AZ for a year in student housing, where we were *not great* about keeping doors closed, etc. More than once, a tarantula got in the house and caused a roommate fight over whose fault it was and who was going to chase it out. They really were pretty docile tho. It was the scorpions that gave me nightmares. Those monsters are aggressive!

Speaking of odd insects, it’s about time for the hummingbird moths to frequent our garden. It looks like the lovechild of a bumblebee, moth and hummingbird.

Oh yes, I saw one of those last year in the area as well. I thought it was a hummingbird at first..but the wings flapped slower..and just didn’t look quite like a bird. I couldn’t figure out what it was until I googled.

We have tarantula hawks here, and they are, in a word — scary. The first time I saw one, I just couldn’t believe it was real. It was trying to take flight, and you could tell it was an effort because, well, it was almost too big and heavy to get off the ground.

I am so glad is Friday and that the temperature is in the lower 70’s. The weekend will be humid in the 90’s 🥵. I am not complaining, but I do not appreciate those extreme changes.
Having now my third cup of coffee with a slice of peaches & cream tarte.

Thank you for all your well wishes to my doggie Yei and me at the beginning of the week. Things have not changed, but I am trying to come to terms with my current situation. I hope things eventually improve. I need to be positive!

Happy and healthy Friday, everyone! 🌻

I’m back in Kalemat today since I’m wearing the same t-shirt. I amped it up with another couple of sprays to really bring on the honey vibe. 🍯

I was tempted to wear SSS Bees’s Bliss but it’s not as round and smooth as Kalemat and I woke up with a sinus headache, so skipped it.

We may be moving on today, not sure just yet. Out of bed a bit late because doggo wanted extended morning snuggles with belly-rubs, ear scritches, and lots of smooching.🐶🥰

Going for the CP points with Fils de Joie – it really gives me a buzz! Thinking about FdJ for today got me thinking about Teatro alla Scala (I had previously seen it has a beeswax note). Something about FdJ reminded me of it. I put a spritz on my arm, and did not get anything similar at first. But Teatro is one with so many notes, I wonder if there would be a long-drydown match? Fils last forever on me and on clothes, so the two have that in common. Happy Friday – hope you all have some relaxing plans.

Happy Friday and Happy Bee Day!

SOTD: Nectar Blossom from Clean, a limited edition from pre-pandemic 2019.

    1) FINALLY a week of dry days. I will start with the garage with all the stuff from last years construction and get that sorted and recycled. I expect that to take the full weekend. I have shelving that is assembled that will help with this. Gonna see if I can sell old Monocle magazines.

    2) I bought an e-bike! It’s the Gen 3 Stride. I tried other models but decided to do a lower priced entry model. Had a bike mechanic build it out and took it out for an inaugural ride this morning to Starbucks. Smooth and easy to ride on PAS 1- on some parts I got up to 15miles/hour! Gonna really give it a go this week- it’s really fun!

Enabler pin for Strathmore notebooks. I found someone in NZ a who sells them ($30) so I ordered a visual diary/ drawing 5×8. So excited!

I have a bowl of sugar water on my deck that I watch as I write at the kitchen table. It attracts a huge cloud of bees, almost a swarm and I’m always intrigued at the way the nectar feeding birds ( and the now sugar addicted sparrows) negotiate the swarm to feed from the syrup. There seems to be such an element of harmony between them. I resupply the water during the day and although the bees all fly up from the water and land on my hands or hair they seem totally chilled. It’s really lovely. I prefer just using an open bowl to a sugar bird feeder as fewer bees drown. With the original bird feeder the bees would squeeze through the tiny holes meant for the birds’ beaks/tongues and then get trapped inside and I found it quite distressing. With the bowl I have a few island( stones) that they can scramble up if they fall in the syrup. I get such a load of pleasure watching them. Wearing A La Nuit which has honey and will move to Praire Nymph later. We eat honey from hives in our neighbourhood made by a work colleague of Alex. It changes from season to season: Manuka, Manuka, pittosporum, clover, willow etc. blend.

Wearing Smell Bent’s Prairie Nymph for the CP today with its honey, beeswax, and carnations. I have a tester but am debating a full bottle. I love beeswax notes, and it’s rare for me to be a fan of carnation-focused frags, so I’m thinking I should go for it while I still can. But I’m weary that the decision is being driven by fomo.

Drinking a pot of Marco Polo black tea today and its making me crave a good belgian dubbel.

Bee or a woodsy perfume, even a palo santo oil. My carpenter bees need representation.

Do you think Chipmunk could be discontinued? For sentimental reasons, I’m on a hunt for a perfume. I’m not sure if my fountain of perfumes needs BUBS or if this is even the one. Just wondering if it would be discontinued. I have gone through some of the sentimental bottles and have ‘saved’ some BUBs. So its not that I haven’t used the juice.
    Thoughts?

The brand often discontinues scents or totally reformulates a new scent under the same name.

They’ve said they won’t do any more reformulations, but discontinuations are always a risk. Their line is large and at some point they will probably have to discontinue the slow sellers. But Chipmunk is rather recent so probably no rush.

Good points on the discontinuations as they grow larger and Chipmunk is a newer release. Didn’t think of it like that. Thanks!

Would you be horribly upset if you didn’t have Chipmunk anymore? And are you using what you do have of it? If you said yes to both questions, then a BUB might be in order (no pun intended).

A good enough amount. I’m thinking this is always going to remind me of someone.

I’m claiming extra points for today’s cp in Marc Jacobs ‘Honey,’ not just for the scent alone but also for its adorable yellow-and-white polka-dotted ‘bee’ bottle that always brings a smile to my face. The fragrance itself is actually a light fruity-floral with a slight honey edge to it, luckily not a heavy, syrupy honey, since today is very warm and humid and anything more than this would be stultifying. Even without wearing a ‘honey’ scent, I could get points just for sitting outside on my little deck, for the 2 black locust trees in my yard are in full bloom, their pendulous hanging creamy white blossoms emitting a strong honey-like fragrance in the humid air. My lilacs nearby are full and just beginning to open up, and I’m saying a prayer 🙏 that the rain predicted for later doesn’t ruin what I’ve been waiting for so long!

We were hoping to go to our first outdoor concert of the year tonight but that’s cancelled due to the weather. 🤬. Garden club plant sale tomorrow morning and hoping to get more herbs and annuals planted this weekend. The migrating birds have mostly come and gone but we were luckily treated to the beautiful iridescent hues of a visiting Indigo Bunting, and yesterday I saw the first Baltimore Oriole add its colorful orange and black plumage to our garden when it was the first visitor to the Oriole feeder I had just hung the day before. 🤞the hummingbirds will soon follow!

Wishing everyone a lovely weekend ahead, hope you all can step outside a bit and revel in nature’s splendor!

I read that they can be invasive. I didn’t plant the ones I have but their feathery fronds and incredible blooms are most welcome! Especially today while it’s warm and humid, their fragrance just fills the air!

I would never have known that Absolue pour le soir contains a honey note, but apparently it does. So that is what I’m wearing today.

You smell great Robin, I love Grand Chalet and it reminds me of the wonderful Astier de Villatte shop near the Jardin du Luxembourg. I didn’t actually buy any Astiers there but I did get both of my lovely Bourdons.

Not wearing a scent today, but definitely participating in observing nature! I wanted to wear Bengale Rouge when I saw it has a honey note, but it’s way to warm for it.

I went on a long walk with a couple of friends this morning and saw a lot of wildlife. Geese and their chicks, turkey vultures, jack rabbits, and even a tiny snake.
