Lazy weekend poll ~ open thread, International Day of Happiness 2022

Posted by Robin on 19 March 2022 161 Comments

Saturday is National Corn Dog Day. Sunday is the first day of Spring plus the International Day of Happiness, UN French Language Day, World Sparrow Day, and Fred McFeely Rogers' birthday.

(PSA: if you need another reason to celebrate the International Day of Happiness, reader Glannys, along with her mom and her cat, is safely out of Ukraine. A group of fellow perfumistas is going to see what they can do to help her get established in Malmö. If you'd like to be part of the effort, you can get added to the list by contacting Elisa P at Instagram or via email.)

We're celebrating everything with our usual open thread poll. Talk about anything you like — the fragrance you’re wearing today, the fragrance that always makes you feel happy, whatever.

Or, ask a question about fragrance, then see if anyone else has asked a question that you can answer…

Such excellent news about Glannys and a testament to how the perfume community is always more then simply about perfume ❤️

Well color me in sunshine today!
Glorious sunny day with blue skies,a perfect late summers’ day!
    SOTD!
WICK Fabulous Human. This is so gorgeous.I started my day using the “Fabulous Human” body scrub,it leaves a perfect scenttrail on my skin, topped up with the perfume:Perfection!
Tested the new-new Iris Porcelana from Ex Nihilo as mentioned. If you are a lover(like me!!) of the(I think?) discontinued Bois Farine from L’Artisan Parfumeur, this is for you!It is gorgeous.
My thoughts are dual sadly, because in all honesty, this IS Bois Farine, just under a new label in a new bottle from a new brand. And there-in lies my gripe. It’s fine when things smell like “cousins” or familiar, but exactly like a already-excisting perfume irks me a lot.I know very few people would be familiar with Bois Farine(talking about in South Africa),so this woupd be new amd fresh and wonderful to them, and I hope it does well.Ex Nihilo seems fairly popular here.
Great news about Glannys, that makes me happy that you are safe with your mom and cat!
    XO’s!!
    ??✌?

I do not know if BF is discontinued but it is still sold on their site at the moment:

      https://www.artisanparfumeur.com/fragrance/all-fragrances/bois-farine-eau-de-toilette-1243137.html

It is one of several I really regret not buying when it was in 15 ml. I don’t think they’ve ever done it in the new 10 ml travel size.

Enjoy your perfect day, we are going to steal your summer very soon!!

Oh wonderful!Glad BF is not officially discontinued, although I have never seen it at the local retailers selling the supposed entire lineup of L’Artisans.
But if someone does want something freakily similar:Iris Porcelana, there you go!(It’s worth sniffing Robin, and they do have travel sets that are not *too pricey, although the 50/100mls over here are $$$$$$$$$!!

Possibly they don’t distribute it? Possibly it is discontinued and they are selling what is left? I really don’t pay enough attention.

And thank you, but I prefer to just sit tight…I do NOT need more fragrances to love!

So, SO happy to hear about Glannys — thank you so much for that bit of fantastic news. And of course perfumistas are rallying to help!

SOTM is a combination of Feu Secret over last night’s lingering traces of Wazamba. I’m an incense junkie lately.

Wonderful news about Glannys! Another reason to welcome Spring with feelings of hope, happiness, and gratitude.

Beautiful day yesterday with sunny skies and temperatures in the 70’s. I took the afternoon off from work to have coffee and pastries with a friend from high school and her two sons. They live overseas and even though we have been in touch lately, we had not met for the past 30+ years. It was an afternoon full of emotions, memories, laughs. A wonderful break in the middle of stressful times for me. We were sitting outdoors with the great view of the Statue of Liberty and the hours went by too fast. We don’t know when we will see each other again, but the whole afternoon was so peaceful and comforting. I wore Prada Infusion de Mimosa and today I am wearing it again to keep the cheerful feeling around. That and Glanny’s news are good reasons for me to be positive and celebrate the arrival of a new season!

Happy weekend, happy Spring and happy Nowruz for those who celebrate! ??????????

Oeillet Bengale as we get sleet off and on. I do love this scent and am very glad I have a back up set of travel sprays. It feels so vintage to me…spicy carnation-like scent that hangs around a nice length of time, especially compared to a lot of modern scents.

All basketball all the time here. The local boys’ HS team went to state and lost handily yesterday. But another school my husband went to is playing in the HS championship later. Then it’s all March Madness…my hometown team is still in there. Best moment of the tourney so far was the IN cheerleaders retrieving the stuck ball. It was wonderful.

Really thrilled to see the news about Glannys and family. I think of her every day as I read the news.

YSL Cinema for a gray but springish day – the cherry trees are blossoming here which is always a wonderful harbinger of warmer weather and longer days. I bought a couple of small parsley plants to put in the garden now as the beginning of my gardening. Have a great weekend, everyone.

I was so happy to see the news about Glannys last night and this morning!

SOTD is, basically Bois de Violette, afte a misfire. I was inspired by Deva to rummage through my samples and find the box of SSS samples. Forest Walk had, sadly, evaporated, so I grabbed Voile de Violette and dabbed fairly liberally before discovering that it has gone off. I probably should have just scrubbed but instead tried to cover it with Bois de Violette, which has been mostly successful but there’s still an undercurrent of the off scent on one wrist.

Popping in to say Hi to everyone
So glad to hear Glannys is OK. Such scary times. I was helping a co-worker to bring her parents from the Eastern Part of Ukraine to the e US – she visited Ukraine in January and it is scary how everything escalated. Parents are safe in US but her brother and sisters cannot leave which is super scary!!!
Testing a new NY based house, Clandestine Laboratories and color me impressed!!!! The owner is self trained and has been working on his current lineup for the last 8 years. Each and everyone of them are amazing and I have a hard time choosing a winner. I do believe work is up there with Kerosene, Slumberhouse and others self trained and passionate creators doing amazing things for indie and niche frags!!

Good news about Glannys! It must have been terrifying for her. I’m wearing vintage DVF Tatiana this morning, acquired at a Portland swapathon from a very kind swapper. I wore this scent as a “signature” for at least five years and it’s still lovely, mostly white flowers on a woody musk base.

Such good news about Glannys. International day of whatever small happiness can be extracted from a grim situation like that.

I’m in a single spritz of (20-year-old?) Chanel No. 5 edt. Talk about happiness: there’s something immensely cheerful about that aldehydic zoom when it first hits your skin. I’ll never understand how people think it smells old-fashioned or even old-lady: it’s a timeless work of art, the Mona Lisa of perfumery.

      I 100% agree with you about No.5.
I would not have agreed in my pre-perfumista days when I wore Le Male exclusively for years and years and years(1997-2008-ish!!)
Nobody I knew wore No.5,so I wasn’t that familiar with it,only it’s reputation as THE perfume of old money/old ladies/old worlds.
      Boy was I wrong.

I use a little hand held frother I found on Amazon several years ago. It was less then $20 I do remember that. It doesn’t heat anything, just froths, but I’ve used it with both almond and oat milk and it works fine.

I got a order of samples yesterday. So I’m wearing Jovay Fire at Will.
It’s nice. A nice vanilla scent. Nothing special, nothing interesting. Vanilla. I wish I could be more enthusiastic. I don’t dislike it, but I have plenty of vanilla mainstays and FAW isn’t cheap. I’ll finish out the sample and not give this one another thought.
And even though I don’t know her, I’m very happy to hear Glannys and her mom and cat are safe. I hope they find a peaceful place to land.

Thank you, Robin and everyone who rooted for us. And the fact that you started a fundraiser… I am deeply moved and grateful.

It was a long, arduous journey via Slovakia, Czech Republic and Germany. My mom is in her late sixties and her health is not good, and my Kora is an indoor cat who was very stressed by the journey. Still, I felt quite lucky and privileged when I heard other people’s story. A lady we met at the Kyiv station who was going South to stay with her 90-year old mother, who would not leave her home despite shellings and bombings. A Roma woman from Ukraine and her numerous family who travelled to Germany hoping to get treatment for her schizophrenic son. A group of women from Kharkiv we met on the border. To get out of Kharkiv, they had spent hours on a train weeping, shivering from cold and not having a drop of water. And so many people on social media asking for help….

Now I am lying on the bed in Sweden, with my mother sleeping next to me and my kitty lying on my legs. We made it.

I did not have a chance to post yesterday so I’m still doing green with Jean-Louis Scherrer edp today.

I’m in Azemour les Oranges which is one of just a few perfumes I’ve brought with me to my friend’s (one-story) house where I’ll be staying two weeks while I continue to recover from surgery. I’m very lucky to have the family welcome me back again after I already stayed here for two weeks in February after my previous surgery. Plus one daughter is a nursing student and the other is studying to be a pastry chef, so I’m quite well taken care of here! I miss my cats but managed to hire what I think is a very good pet-sitting agency and they already sent me pictures from today’s visit! It comforts me. And although some might make light of the plight of animals and pets in Ukraine, I would personally feel so sad and stressed, and saw some news and photos of Glannys’s cute black kitty on Insta and am very very happy that she, Mom, and kitty all made it out safely to Sweden! It was quite an ordeal. Hard to imagine, really. My hostess’s daughter complimented me on my perfume!

Is is possible to set up a temporary sleep space in your downstairs area until you are fully recovered with good strength and mobility? Stairs are so difficult after any kind of lower body surgery or injury…

Yes, I did try that out when I was home for a week while my brother and his wife were here visiting. I did OK, but I have a constant fall risk due to my weak leg, and being alone just isn’t really reasonable for me now with such a risk. Thanks for the well wishes!

The dog woke me earlier than I wanted, then after I was up, promptly jumped in the bed and tunneled under the covers. Yeesh! I gave her the eye and she just wagged her tail, sighed and snuggled down into the pillow.

I haven’t picked a SOTD just yet but am heavily leaning towards Kalemat because it’s so easy and soothing. Like a little lullaby in olfactory form….

    Hi All,
It’s been a minute. I’m repainting my bedroom. So far I have the room prepped but haven’t managed any actual painting.
Has anyone here sold perfume online through a “Sell Your Unloved Items” website? I have a fairly expensive perfume that doesn’t work for me and decided to sell it. However, the website won’t let me post it without entering my credit card info. Why would they require that information to sell? I asked then and they said it was a verification of who I am. I fail to see how having someone’s credit card information authenticates who they are. People have their credit hacked all the time. I’m utterly confused by this policy. I don’t trust these sites to protect my information either. This is ridiculous. I’d appreciates any thoughts. Robin, please remove this if you feel it is inappropriate.
Scents of the day were several Including L’Eau, which I can’t decide if I like, Dragon Boat, and Luxury. It was a weird day.

Yeah, I’d say if you have reservations about the site, give it a strong pass. Is there any other avenue you can use to sell it? E-Bay seems popular with perfume people…

Tonight post shower it is Maison Crivelli Santal Volcanique from my super cute travel spray. Will be buying a FB in the near future. The website markets it towards, well unisex maybe but describes it as so musculine… I don’t know I find it very unisex or feminine with this lovely “oooomph”. I am head over heals with that one.

In other news, I got my favorite cashier at Whole Foods today. When I loaded the belt, I grouped things so that when she bags them, there’s a logical order. She bagged the first set and then started to count the number of items inside the bag – 3x! I had to tell her that 3 of the items rang up as 1 “item” because the pricing was 3 to a pack. Had I not said anything I may still be there a few hours later!

I hope I’m wrong but now that we’ve loosened COVID restrictions, I fear that we’re .5 variant away from having some restrictions revived.

I’m with you. This new variant will be very telling given the rampant widespread infections happening in China, Hong Kong and South Korea, and Europe starting to see numbers jump, I really really hope we’re not 2 months behind a similar trajectory in the U.S. We know more about it now, so there’s that.

I just read an article that said numbers may be higher than reported because of positive home tests not reported. If people get sick at home, don’t end up in hospital and don’t report it, does it matter (to regular, non-healthcare folks)? It’s like that age old question about whether the falling tree makes a noise if there’s no one to hear it….

Gabrielle Essence today. First day of spring and our weather decided to really cooperate. Bright sun, relatively balmy temperatures. Gorgeous day. Of course, we will have rain the next few days. I guess mud season has started. But, it basically means I survived my first Wisconsin winter! I deserve a pin or something. Like in the days of San Francisco Giants baseball at Candlestick. If you attended an extra-inning night game, you received a Croix de Candlestick button, with an icicle over the SF logo. Coveted badges of honor.

You must have liked my fragrance yesterday since you are wearing it today. It’s a nice spring fragrance. I am guessing the winter wasn’t too bad in Wisconsin this year as it was pretty mild with little snow in South Dakota. In the 70’s here today. Rain is coming this week, but we need the moisture.

I did…you get a mini enabler pin. I have no reference in the winter. Some said it was mild, another said it felt like a cold one. I had expected temps mostly below 10, which did happen. But there was a lot above that. It seemed mostly higher teens and 20s.

This reminds me of T-Rex even though it’s a cat. I’m pretty sure my little cow dog is at least 25% meow…

SotD Samsara Shine. I just looked on u-no-ware-Bay; since mine was purchased some few months ago, and smells fabulous, I think this vintage is worth a chance. If anyone, that is, is as curious about vintage scents as am I. I am all behind on comments but here’s hoping all had a good weekend.

Another great sunny holiday day. Tried out my e-bike today, because i had a repair of the control panel. Thankfully it works again, so i biked over the fields for an hour in glorious sunshine.
Todays scent was Azuree, dealers choice is : Give love to your decants and samples.
We wanted to bike the Neckar bikeway, but today my Covid app gave me a warning, so i don ´t want to stay overnight in a hotel and put. others at risk. My test today was negative, so i will test daily the next days. Hope i don ´t catch this again, the first time was awful.
