Wednesday scent of the day 10/27

Posted by Robin on 27 October 2021 246 Comments

It's Hump Day and the World Day for Audiovisual Heritage. Birthdays: Joe Medicine Crow, Dylan Thomas, Ruby Dee, Roy Lichtenstein, Sylvia Plath, John Cleese, Maxine Hong Kingston, Fran Lebowitz. What fragrance are you wearing?

My day 3 of Pumpkin Spice week: more cinnamon, in Marni.

Reminder: on 10/29, we're celebrating Pumpkin Spice season...wear a fragrance featuring any or all of the elements (cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, clove, allspice, & etc).

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2021, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

    Xerjoff
    Accento Eau de Parfum
I think I love the feel (like velvet) and the shape of this bottle more than I actually like the perfume. One spray doe lasts for eons.

In laws arrived safe and sound in Canada, despite our rainy windy weather here. Missing chai this morning, though I have all the ingredients to do it myself. Including ginger which he sliced and froze for me.

Your FIL is so sweet! A freshly-made chai sounds like just the ticket right now…
I had Xerjoff Irisss, which I loved but it had nuclear staying power. I kind of like to switch out perfumes in late afternoon for a change of scenery…

Nuclear staying power..this is what I think about accento also. Its last and lasts..and if you want it off the clothing you have to throw it in the machine.

My FIL arrives tomorrow for a 10 day stay. He will not be making any food or drinks for me. But he’s good at laying low and staying out of the way ime. That said, I’ve never been around when he’s done an extended stay, so ?

Oh, the first killing frost is always such a bummer. One of my dahlias got wiped out exactly one day after opening its first bloom — everything here was so late this year.

Oh that’s a shame, dahlias are so beautiful! My mom’s neighbors raise dahlias and travel all over for flower shows. They let me come and take pictures at the end of the season and I’m always fascinated how some flowers are the size of a ping pong ball and others are like dinner plates.

Today it’s Rousse, aka All The Cinnamon. Probably the most autumnal scent Lutens ever did, and I think maybe in the top five most purely Lutens-esque scents: it has all the hallmarks of his style, as instantly recognizable as a Mondrian.

CP adjacent with Shalimar by way of Mexico, which is supposed to have cinnamon and vanilla, but I mainly just get mildly less Shalimary Shalimar from this. I love it, but I don’t wear it so much in the summer. Now that it is winter, I will put in in regular rotation and retire the summer vanilla I have been wearing, Vanilla Woods by 7 Virtues of Afghanistan. 🙂 I need a perfume that is mainly tolu, nutmeg and clove. Does such a beast exist out there?

Cinnabar for the CP: cloves, carnation, incense and lots of other spicy goodness. I have tried both new (2019) and various older versions and all are very good. First Fall frost here, but not too serious. The ground was only heavily dewed, though a couple neighbors had some windshield frost. I think my creeping sedum got nipped and I was glad I threw a sheet over the jasmine, but I think the porch roof would have been protection enough. Anyway, the big pots of tropical plants will be moving indoors this week. Looking forward to everyone’s spicy choices; but I think so many favorites have been mentioned already that I am able to participate each day.

So nice! A great spicy scent. I used up the last of my (nineties-ish?) Cinnabar earlier this year and I don’t regret it, though I miss it a little: I have a million other things to wear, but Cinnabar really was special.

I’m wearing La Danza Delle Libellule from a sample this morning. Not a pumpkin, but more apple pie (not much cinnamon) and vanilla ice cream.

My experience with this one changes by season; it didn’t work for me at all in warm weather. I got visions of the waxy plastic fruit that folks decorated with in the 70s, but my imagination conjured up that said waxy fruit was also scented. That doesn’t seem likely, but I was a kid, so who knows? Much better results in cool weather with tiny dabs. Accidently kind of poured it on this morning, and that ghost of wax fruits past is lurking about… I’ll wait to see what happens.

    Have a great day, everyone!

I needed some retail therapy yesterday, and B&BW came through. The body sprays were $6.50 each, so I, um, picked up four. Joy smells like snickerdoodles (left arm) and Golden Clementine & Amber is a nice, sweet citrus.

Drinking MF Earl Grey Paris this rainy, cool morning. I’m grateful for the weather. It moved all the muggies out! ?

I went back and forth on buying it because it would be a blind buy (I am not someone who has really bad luck with blind buys–it is worse. I wind up “liking” the perfume, and then just never wear it. So it can take me months to realize my mistake.) And now I see it is sold out again. Well, scarcity makes it more desirable I guess. What do you love about it? Tell us more!

I’ve loved all the other Fenty products I’ve tried, so I ordered a decant from Surrender to Chance. I had no idea what to expect. I was not expecting the magnolia and other flowers to be so prominent – it’s just a really surprising blend but so successful.

A break from the pumpkin spices today for Bandit. I accidentally put WAY more on that I meant from a dropper, luckily I’m in my home office by myself today haha.

Thanks to everyone for the well wishes for me leading that meeting yesterday. It went just fine in spite of the lack of time to prep. I always seem to pull it off which is probably why they throw things my way in those circumstances – perhaps I should flub it once or twice ha!

And glad I did; I’m finding it uplifting as well as cozy, and there’s some lifting to be done in my psyche today.

Thank you! I’m okay, just a bit grumpy and out-of-sorts after a mentally fatiguing day yesterday and a few too many lurking stressors. Trayee is interesting — the drydown at the moment is a ringer for Traversée du Bosphore, although the initial fragrance is nothing like it.

Wow. October 27 produced a lot of brilliant people. Quite a list of birthdays.

In other news, I’m in Corso Como, which keeps fading rather quickly. This is a new bottle, a gift from my mum. I’ve tested this one before and didn’t think it was a fast fader. In fact, I distinctly recall getting wonderful wafts of the scent throughout the day. I have applied about 10 sprays and it is only 9:30 in the morning! I wonder if the reformulators have had at it. Still a gorgeous perfume though, while it lasts.

No, I don’t bike when it rains and will stop in winter, because I hate biking in the dark over the lonely fields. I try to bike twice a week when the weather permits and I am not on the early shift. I have 22 km one way, so biking is a real commitment. Otherwise it’s exercise, which I usually hate to do…

Not even close to compliant in morning sprays of Narciso Poudree.

I keep looking at the weather forecast and thinking we’ll need to turn the heat on and pull out the down duvet any minute. But I think my concept of cold is just warped from 3 months of 100 degree heat this summer. I’m sitting out in the sun and it turns out 69F really isn’t quite sweaters & boots weather ? But it will be next week, if the forecast is accurate. Lows in the 40s surely mean the radiators come on.

New Zealand’s first radio transmission in the early 1920s ( and also the first voice/music broadcast earlier) was made by a physics professor , Professor Jack, from Dunedin so I will wear Copper in his honour…a bit of a stretch …actually might wear Cloud instead for airwaves. Just after WW2 mobile recording units travelled through parts of small town NZ recording Maori and NZ English. These made up some of the very first recordings of indigenous speakers but also helped linguists figure out the New Zealand accent ( with its strains of English, Irish, Scottish, Australian). Have a happy day everyone.

My aunt is on the South Island (not sure where you are located), where she said there have been no covid cases at all. She’s been vaccinated, but is really missing her annual globe trotting to Ireland (her birthplace) and England (she has a home and a daughter there). Most of her compatriots in Ireland are quite elderly (as is she, but very vibrant and active) so every season away from them is one that will never be made up. Are people able to return to NZ if they exit out at this time? She staying with her son and grandchildren on the South Island, they have even built her her own little apartment, but she’s really missing family in Ireland and England.

I live in the South Island and had no COVID cases for 300+ days – though last week a weak positive was detected in the top of the island. So far, NZ has had 28 COVID deaths since the start of 2020 . The plan is to get vaccination rates above 90% so lockdowns and travel can open without devastating the hospitals. Our ICU capabilities are quite small. I think we have five people in ICU in the country at present. So, all arrivals to the country have to spend 14 days in govt. run quarantine units. This has been really hard as there are more people wanting to come to NZ than there are quarantine beds, and travel is more or less restricted to NZ citizens/ residents and essential workers. Once vaccination rates increase travel will become easier. Modellers figure that with 80% vaccinated we will have 60000 hospitalisation and 7000 deaths so it’s pretty desperate. Currently, we’re close to 86%.

Yes, she is wanting to avoid quarantine with two grandchildren under the age of 5. That would be a nightmare! At the beginning of the pandemic, she was on the South Island getting ready to leave for Ireland. I emailed her asking her to just stay there because is was definitely going to be safer than London or Ireland. This before we even knew how bad it was going to be. I didn’t hear from her for months and thought the worst. Recently got an email, and thankfully she stayed in NZ all this time and is doing fine, as well as her immediate family there. Sorry to hear there are cases cropping up there, but hopefully with high vaccination rates, the hospitals there won’t feel the deluge like other spots around the globe.

Day two of Angel Muse for me.
It fits the cool weather and I am always happy to wear it.
I bought a new fall table cloth with apples on it, and some fake fall flowers for my table. Figured I will try and embrace the season. BBW sent me a coupon for a free full size product, so I will be sniffing there later.

I honestly don’t recall the difference between the men’s and women’s version. Then again, I never met anyone wearing the men’s version back in the day. It sure was easy to tell who was wearing the fem version, though!

Well, the men version is spicier, cinnamon and nutmeg, that’s why I chose it and the female version more ambery and yes, it was everywhere in the eighties.

I was all set for a spicy perfume, but then I decided to wear a dress with a geometric pattern in grey, black and turquoise. I just can’t wear a warm spicy scent with that, so I’ll be wearing Sortilège from Le Galion.

Commando today…I’m just here to whine about a sinus headache that’s also making my neck feel out of sorts. The good news is the nausea is minimal, so I’m able to get food in me and take Excedrin (with its magical combo of aspirin, acetaminophen and caffeine) to try and knock it out.). My guess is it’s dry air, so I’ll be apsearchjng around for our humidifier.

In other news, we saw Dune last night. Big screen is best if you are willing…it’s visually pretty amazing. It’ll be a long 2 years wait for the second half.

Huh. I am also having sinus issues, the past couple days- probably due to dry air – and have been fighting a tension headache (neck, shoulders) alongside it. It would never have occurred to me that they are related. (I also get sinus-related vertigo but am not there now.)

Do I understand correctly that you try to treat the sinus issue and that that eases the neck pain? Or just that you’re trying to treat all of the above with 1 magic pill?

I guess this is a good reminder that for starters, I should irrigate my sinuses.

I bought some saline nasal spray to use also, since I think that’s part of it. I don’t know if the neck thing is related…may be tension from fighting the headache. I have found that Excedrin is best for these types of headaches…IF the nausea isn’t there….

      • kpaint says:

Excedrin isn’t an option for me, but I did rinse my sinuses and take a mucinex sinus max, which also has acetaminophen.

Tension headache is gone, which just might be from the sinus rinse alone(!)

I dealt with vertigo and nausea (on a regular basis) for many many years before I went to a really good allergist who finally gave me the right Rx to solve the problem. I can share or email you if that’s what you’re dealing with as well.

Today is the day I am trying Eau Dynamisante globally. What I mean by globally is I sprayed it on my arms and neck and rubbed it into my skin since it is a therapeutical fragrance. Oh I want to mention I received it from the most wonderful fellow NSTer <3. I love it!!!!! Will need a large bottle. It has a prominent ginger note and I love ginger. I have a large bag of candied ginger – one of my favorite snacks since childhood and Eau Dynamisante's fragrance smells just like my candied ginger. I have tried many ginger frags but this comes closest to the smell of my candied ginger. Love it. Plus I am CP compliant!!

    Hello NST!

Does anyone else remember the 1990’s era sitcom “Home Improvement”?

This past Sunday, I found myself in the middle of what felt like a missing episode of that show. Mr. Jalapeno had taken it upon himself to replace our kitchen faucet. TBH, it was in dire need of being replaced for a few years… it was corroded in spots and leaky. However, I had Specific Ideas about what said faucet should look and function like. We got one back in May of this year or thereabouts.

Now, one would think that replacing a kitchen faucet is no big deal, right? Wrong. Mr. Jalapeno (to his credit) squeezed himself under the kitchen sink and attempted to remove all the old faucet and its associated hardware. He even went to the hardware store to get a specialized tool to help remove fasteners under the countertop.

For whatever reason, there was were a couple of nuts that he simply Could. Not. Loosen. He ended up taking out the entire kitchen sink and the garbage disposal in order to remove the old faucet. By the time he had the new faucet installed, he was a hurting unit and decided to finish the job the following day. Since the new faucet was functional and the sink had been put more or less back together, I didn’t have a problem with it.

Fast forward to Monday. I’m sure that some of you have probably already figured out what happened. Mr. Jalapeno was too bruised and sore to finish the task.

He did shorten the water lines yesterday, but didn’t put all the clips back that had held the sink to the counter. FWIW, our sink is an over mount, not an under mount. He said something to the effect of a couple of the clips were redundant/extra, so he wasn’t going to bother. I still don’t know how I managed not to facepalm myself. If those clips weren’t needed, why the (bleep) were they there in the first place?

Start playing that “Home Improvement” theme music right now, folks.

SOTD = getting with the CP in Pacifica’s Tibetan Mountain Temple. This has a big honking ginger note in it. I smell like gingerbread, which isn’t a bad thing at all.

I think I have convinced Mr. Jalapeno to hire a plumber the next time we need to install a kitchen faucet.

In all honesty, he didn’t do a bad job. He checked all the water lines for leaks when he attached them. Same with the trash disposal. And he put new plumber’s putty around the sink. But Mr. Jalapeno isn’t as young or as flexible as he used to be. He can afford to hire the help.

We had the same problem removing the original kitchen tap here. Crazy frustrating! Had to get a plumber with the proper tool to remove it. The next tap afterwards was easier to replace ourselves.

Home Improvement was a great show. I was sad when it ended.

We had to replace the sliding door lock in the heat of summer. I’m sure if we videoed it, it would be pretty funny now. There was an extra metal fitting around the lock inside the door frame so it was harder to get the old lock out; this wasn’t explained or shown on the youtube videos we watched.

Sad thing is, the old faucet we had was a replacement for the original one. The original was builder grade (aka junk), and we got rid of it after maybe 4 or 5 years.
