Thursday scent of the day 10/21

Posted by Robin on 21 October 2021 271 Comments

It's Almost-Friday and National Apple Day. Today is also Ursula Le Guin's birthday, and her estate (she died in 2018) has announced the Ursula K Le Guin prize for fiction, to be awarded starting next year. (More birthdays: Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Celia Cruz, Dizzy Gillespie, Carrie Fisher.) What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Thierry Mugler Aura for Pantone 18-6022 Leprechaun.

Reminder: on 10/22, wear a fragrance that evokes one of Pantone's picks for the Autumn/Winter 2021/2022 NYFW Color Palette. (If you like, click through to the article and pick your fragrance based on the color name or description rather than the color itself, as in "Leprechaun is a wondrous green hue emblematic of the mythical imps featured in Irish folklore" or "Friendly and joyful, an optimistic yellow offering the promise of a sunny day.")

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2021, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Such a lovely, peaceful picture Robin!

Another chilly start to the workday. BUT it’s payday.

Think Cuir de Russie again since I waited so long to open the bottle and smelled so fab all day yesterday.

The pantones aren’t working for me this week.

Beautiful choice. And ditto on the Pantones. I think of lots of my perfumes in terms of colours, usually, but not this week!

    I’m wearing Armani Mania

15 years ago when I was an 19 year old girl I thought that it was the most perfect fragrance in the world.

I asked my mother to buy it for me and she came to store with me to y me a 30ml bottle. It was an expensive gift for our family and I really treasured it.

Guys loved it. I lived in the dorm and I was asked constantly what perfume I was wearing. People in store lines also asked what was this perfume I wore.

It was the only perfume that actually made compliments. I thought that I would wear Armani Mania for the rest of my life as a signature scent. It was so ambery-peppery nice. I used up 3 bottles.
But then I started to try other perfumes and things got complicated))

Now I don’t think that Armani Mania is that great. It is rather boring. It has a fresh note of calone probably, pink pepper and a synthetic base.

I respect it as my first grown up perfume. But I won’t wear it again for sure

She deserves a special place in my heart though) As my first real perfume and as the only one that got me complements on how I smell)

Wearing Bois des Iles, EdT. This has been a challenging scent for me for many years. The sandalwood becomes very prominent on skin and that’s a note so difficult for me to wear. However, after a long time, I decided to give it a try again and it finally clicked. I have been wearing it daily for almost a week and its beauty is very comforting.

I have been away because my mom was admitted again to the hospital last Friday. She is in very serious condition. She is scheduled for surgery next Wednesday, but not sure if she will be able to make it by then. The past week has been full of sadness and stress. I just want her to be out of this situation soon, no matter the outcome.
I have been lightly spraying on BdI for comfort. My sisters associate perfumes with pleasant or happy moments. They don’t understand how I can be wearing a scent under the current circumstances. My youngest sister, especially finds it insensitive. Only I know how scents have helped me through the toughest times of my life and I will not stop, unless I am not in the mood for it. I made some damage to my wallet a few nights ago and purchased a couple of full bottles. Waiting for them to be delivered today.
Planning to have a relaxing day at home on Saturday, when my younger sister and nephew will be spending the day with mom. We are all looking forward to a quiet, peaceful holiday season full of health, peace and gratitude and hopefully celebrating life!

Sorry for the long post! Happy almost Friday, everyone! ☕

Sorry you are going through this!
      What FB did you purchase?
I would say, take comfort in perfume or a nice cup of Joe..whatever it takes to get through these times. Your family may not understand whom you truly are, seldom family members do, so don’t take their criticism to heart. Just my humble unsolicited advice

I know this is a difficult time for you, and you must take care of yourself, so that you can face the outcome of your mother’s situation with a clear heart. If perfume makes you feel better, wear it.

      pl67,
I am sorry to hear this about your mother and I will keep her and you in my thoughts.
I never wore BdI until around 2016 – then my mother died and I wore it to her funeral, the days before and the days after. It brought me comfort and when everything was over, I actually purchased the EDP on my flight home.
So, it has a special meaning to me and while I am sorry your sister doesn’t quite get it, we do.

Thinking about your mom, you, and your family, pl67, and sending hugs if you want them.

I find wearing perfume causes me to take long deep breaths when I bring my wrist to my nose to smell what I am wearing, and those deep breaths cause my body to relax a bit. So even from just purely physical POV, I agree that perfume can help with stress.

Terribly sorry, PL67. You are such a constant, caring and always there for your mother. Perfume is very healing for some of us. My mother picked out a perfume she loved on me and I wore it every day till she passed. Dad was different. I wore my own different ones till he let me know they were awful. Then, I wore Mom’s and he loved it.

You have no energy or room in your life to deal with whining. If they never had a problem before, leave you alone. It only makes this sad time worse.

Lots of us get it. You just want your mother in no pain and having a good quality of life.

Big hugs. Bigger than you can imagine.???

I’m wearing Cartier Vetiver Bleu. I got a flu shot on Monday evening and it wiped me out. I was home sick Tuesday and Wednesday. Feeling marginally better today, and not feverish, so I’m back at work. This is the first really bad reaction that I’ve had to a flu shot in a couple of years. I did have a really bad reaction to my second COVID vaccine, so maybe it’s just my age and general health.

    Good morning!
To celebrate Apple Day, my sotd is Toy 2, a crisp apple, mixed fruits and clean soap scent.
Currently on my first cup of coffee. Decaf and black.

Knize Ten, “The Gentleman’s Toilet Water”, leathery as heck. There are a great many other things in there, but Knize Ten doesn’t care: it just wants to surround you in leather like the gentleman you secretly are. Such a good cool-fall-weather scent.

SOTD is Nirvana Rose, a find at TJ Maxx for $16.99! First time in a long while that I’ve found any fragrance of interest at any of the brick-and-mortar discount stores — what’s up with that? I guess it can pair with the Pantone color Pale Rosette, but it’s not a “pale” rose fragrance. It’s got a nice dose of vetiver with the Rose de Mai, and it’s a bit spicy. For tomorrow, I’ll probably wear either Rosine’s Clair Matin for Pale Rosette, or one of my beloved green fragrances to go with Leprechaun. Papillon’s Dryad comes to mind!

I know, it has been really scarce pickings for at least a year now. I’m sure it has something to do with supply chain disruptions. Given that department stores can’t or won’t put out testers any more, I keep hoping a lot of them will show up at discounters online.

Kiss Me Intense, which I don’t think pairs with any of the colors since it’s a combo of vanilla and bitter almond, which cuts the sweetness.

Power sleep last night and crazy dreams in the morning hours. Lots of driving and errand running yesterday, so staying close to home in this rainy day. Will take a run up to the big farmers market to see what apples they have…it’s getting close to their seasonal closing time. We won’t see them again until late May. Hard to believe it was a year ago we were here making decisions on flooring, counters, tiling, etc.

Sipping my 2nd cup of coffee, wishing it was a chai tea. I’ll make some later this morning.

Makeup: Chanel foundation and Rouge Bunny Rouge eyeshadow in Abyssinian Catbird (rich, complex bronze with green and gold glints). It seems RBR has stopped production of their makeup, which is a shame, as they had beautiful colors.

I’m asking because I’m wondering if anyone has smelled a strange top note on the TDC version. I returned one bottle and bought another, thinking the top note was off but it’s there on both. I find it very off putting but if I can get past the initial blast, it dries down nicely.

TSC iris is so lovely, sorry to hear about this experience. My bottle is maybe 5 years old and it’s fine from start to finish, but maybe I just can’t smell what you can? The very first note is almost a cheap-sweets-violet to me but it lasts a few seconds, then the whole thing warms up and develops.

(Side note: I am very much pro testing but it is logistically tough for parents and I wish they would take the rapid result )

It’s a lovely sunny day in SoCal, a brisk 63 degrees. The 80s theme continues. I’m wearing vintage Ysatis by Givenchy as suggested to me by the lovely Lillyjo. It’s all Big White Flower bombs. I feel rich and I’m fantasizing that my bank account is as big as my perfume. I can’t believe I’ve never smelled this before. The Ylang Ylang is quite pronounced which I adore. I’m definitely going to beg my friend for a decant of this powerhouse. I’m matching this to Pantone’s Illuminating because it reminds me of the yellow flowers of Ylang Ylang. Thank you Lillyjo for the suggestion. You are now officially my go-to girl for vintage Big Perfumes. ???????

I’ve also been challenged by matching my perfume to the weather. And picking the wrong days for cooking and baking projects.

My husband was telling me that he visited some chat board about our (new) local area where someone was asking whether it would be warm enough for her kids to play in the sand at the beach on Thanksgiving. Answer was: it could be anywhere from 40-90F.

Sounds about right, if our first year here was any indication. In winter you need both a parka and sandals at the ready.

Cake is totally legit! I tend to make cobblers when I can’t be bothered to make pastry — still very similar flavor profile to a fruit pie, but so quick and easy. My son and I are currently in the process of “forgetting” about the stash of summer blackberries we hid in the freezer for mid-winter cobblers.

May there be many helpings of bananas foster, peach pie, cherries jubilee with ice cream, and glorious berry crumbles in your near culinary future! Hopefully plenty of good things still on the menu…

I’m wearing Montalé Sensual Instinct, which “combines vibrant notes of coffee with the mysteries of the rose and creates a praline balance of mesmerizing sensuality.” Nope, all I get is some sweet rose, no coffee and no praline. I’ll have to wait to see if I like the dry down.

    Stopped at Marshall’s
yesterday to see if I could find a bigger perfume traveling box, but no luck. I DID find a Nars Matte lipstick in Force Specialé which is a beautiful deep berry for 7.99. Don’t know when or where I’ll wear it but it’s a lovely color and their matte formulation is comfortable and doesn’t enhance lip lines or look dry and gross. Also found a full size Laniege Overnight Lip Mask in grapefruit for a song. I now have a backup to my vanilla pot.

It’s my Monday and I’m suitably blue. ?

    Thursday!

    1) In Cloud spray- perfect for this very windy fall day!

    2) FINISHED the deep clean of the former housemate’s – my word- and did the patching and smoothing. Phew, the work!

    3) National Apple Day? I am thinking of making hard cider tomorrow afternoon from apples I gleaned. I have about 2 pecks of apples, and it’s a mix of crab and sweet, so I am gonna make a car jack press, add some Champagne yeast and give this a go!

I’m in PdN’s Vetyver today. I think of vetiver as being a dry note, as if the grass has been cut and left out to dry in the sun, but this one is like just-cut vetiver that that is starting to ooze out its juice. I also get a strong note of coriander and ylang-ylang. I don’t get the caraway, or the cumin that some people say they from this.

Drinking Marco Polo tea, one of the few black teas that I like without milk.

I’m wearing Bohemian Spice by April Aromatics from an old sample. It’s a good match for the Pantone brown color Root Beer. It’s mainly patchouli with incense, not getting much of the orange and spice top notes. I don’t know if it’s gone off because I can’t remember it very well. It’s pleasant as is but not at the top of my patchouli list.
This afternoon I’m going in for a one-week check-up on my knee surgery and plan to ask why I still have so much pain and am almost unable to walk. Ugh!

Well no fragrance yet for me. I am going to take a very late shower today and then decide.
The other day though I tested FM Rose & Cuir. First of all I KNEW it would be a perfume of best quality even before I tried it on. FM makes very elegant, very high-end fragrances. Second of all – Rose & Cuir is just gorgeous. More rose than leather (and great for me) but what a beautiful fresh yet elegant rose!!

Some of the FM fragrances don’t quite suit me, but to quote Elizabeth Bennett, I really cannot laugh at them — they’re so well done. Wondering how Rose & Cuir compares to Galop, which I love immoderately.

My Guerlain Perfumers Set arrived last night and today I’m testing Rose Cherie. I wore it solo for a few hours and concluded that it’s not as bright as French Kiss.

I’m now comparing it to French Kiss, and my initial evaluation was correct. FK also has a more distinct raspberry note. Someone else here (forgot who – sorry!) said FK is more firmly gourmand and I would concur. FK has always smelled like a raspberry macaron to me, and Rose Cherie lacks the cookie and vanilla, but still has fruity notes and is very similar. But it’s a bit more muddled (like heavier on the mid notes, and fewer higher pitched top notes and effervescence, if that makes sense. )

It would probably make a reasonable substitute for French Kiss for most, but do we need one? I can’t keep track of what Guerlain is up to. Did they discontinue the Charnels altogether? Or rename/reformulate/repackage some but not others? My recollection is that FK was in the Charnels line, which doesn’t seem to exist anymore, but Rose Cherie is part of A &M.

Happy Friday Eve, everybody! I’m in vintage Vol de Nuit EDC, sprayed lightly because of a meeting with a paint estimator earlier this morning. Have finally selected new paint colors for the main rooms and hallways in the house, and there was a LOT to be measured, much of it at heights that are scary … hence hiring someone else to do it. ?

Robin, you smell wonderful. Aura is so much fun to wear – it has for me the smell-good factor while at the same time being oddball. I slightly prefer the Eau Sensuelle or the edt version, but when my edp mini gets the thunk, I might just track down a pre-L’Oreal bottle. Sotd was indecision – finally grabbed Esprit d’Oscar which had too much citrus for me. I think I need to switch to Lolita Lempicka L. as EdO fades away. Burr, chilly all day except when moving about.

Lillyjo, I have no actual information about this, but I heard some rumors that some Muglers won’t be the same after the buyout. I for sure have no insider source. But being a person with many wonderful vintage and older perfumes I always try to find “first editions.” Our small town Macy’s never even got Aura at all, though they did have the Mugler Fountain for Alien and Angel.

Thanks Isabella! Perfumes are kind of like cats to me; they do what they will.

I woke up late today and my daughter missed the bus. Luckily I still made it to work on time. I grabbed and sprayed the first perfume I saw, which was The Body Shop White Musk Smokey Rose. On my lunch I applied Angelique Noire from the purse stash.

I try to only have decants of perfumes that I really love in my purse. Plus a couple that will do fine in a pinch. I rotate them every few months.

I wore Escentric 2 to work today. On my way home I stopped at Lush to buy shower gel and spritzed on Shade, their new sandalwood scent. The notes say sandalwood and guaicwood, but on my skin it reads as slightly burnt caramel and lavender?

It’s nice, but it’s not the sandalwood I was hoping for. Oh well, I smelled good as I drove home.

Oh, I need to smell this. Maybe I’ll stop by the store tomorrow.

So does your Lush store only let you smell things through your mask, and then make you use hand santizer every time you touch something? I did not realize this was the rule when I went in…

I didn’t have to sanitize every time I touched something, just when I came into the store. But yes, mask up the whole time.

    I’m in Root Beer again!

In other news, people do need to take what they hear with the right context. Imagine if you just walked in on a Zoom call, did not see what is being shared and only heard “Joe, wiggle!” (person’s name was changed to protect the innocent). Oh my!!! In reality, a mock up with many columns was being shown on a screen and the facilitator just asked the person sharing his screen to wiggle his mouse pointer to help direct our attention to the correct part of the screen. My opinion: the mock up has too much info, never mind the wiggling!

Was testing Robert Piguet Bandit EdP today. I also have a sample of the EdT (thanks to a WONDERFUL NSTer <3). But when I have a choice between the EdT and EdP of the same perfume I will always go for the latter first… Thoughts on it? Very deep, very perfume-y and soapy. Aldehydes maybe? Most people of today could think it is very vintage smelling so it would take a perfume connoisseur to really enjoy it's beauty – at least I would imagine. Will test the EdT later.

Very late post but I am really enjoying everyone’s fall choices lately! I’m in BV Eau de velours today since I wasn’t doing patient cared at work today. Sweet dreams if you’re still up reading!
