Lazy weekend poll ~ open thread, early October 2021

Posted by Robin on 2 October 2021 218 Comments

A few quick PSAs: The freebiemeet is open! And Donatella will be stopping by Monday, followed by the fall reading poll next Saturday. The next splitmeet will be on the 23rd.

Meantime, talk about anything you like — the fragrance you’re wearing today, the dream fragrance you'd love to get for free, whatever.

Or, ask a question about fragrance, then see if anyone else has asked a question that you can answer…

    Wearing Hermes Ambre Narguile.
Burning a Trader Joe’s Honeycrisp Apple soy candle.

I am spending the weekend at home and planning to relax after I finish running my errands early in the afternoon. Pizza in the menu for dinner.
I woke up pretty early this morning and rotated my bar soaps and shower gels in the bathroom for the fall season. Currently in the shower: A la Maison de Provence Honey Crisp Apple french milled bar soap, Yardley Pumpkin Cream& Cinnamon limited edition bar soap, BBW Champagne, Apple & Honey shower gel and BBW Marshmallow Pumpkin Latte shower gel. Trying to have some nice and relaxing fall season vibe around.

Happy and healthy weekend, everyone! ??

You always have the best Yardley soaps! All I ever see here is lavender and almond.
      Have a relaxing weekend!

LOL! I usually get my Yardley soaps from my local supermarket. As soon as see the seasonal ones, I grab a couple of them, since they may not show up anymore.
You too have a nice weekend! ?

We usually don’t think about local supermarkets or stores to carry nice or limited edition soaps, but sometimes you can find them.

I sniffed that candle at TJ’s yesterday, it’s really apple-y. I like it.

The TJ candle is straightforward apple. However, the scent when burning and the throw are very soft, which is a good choice for my dog’s allergies.

The candle scent is strong when smelled directly from the tin, but pretty soft when burning.

My sister moved to a new place farther away from me. I took a drive out there early this morning so I could learn my way with no traffic to make me nervous. Now I am getting ready for work. Sampling RL Woman. Too much ambroxan for me, but otherwise it’s pretty nice.
I forgot about the freebiemeet but will hopefully get it together before it ends, lol.

I tried RL Woman, too. I didn’t care for the juice, but the bottle is elegant. At first, I thought you tried RL “Woman Too”, and it was a flanker that Fragrantica didn’t have listed yet. Miscue! ?

Good morning! I actually had a decent night’s sleep, miraculous. Today is our Papillon dog club’s monthly walk in Balboa Park, then we will have afternoon tea with SIL & BIL. The dog is going to be thrilled, she’s been so deprived of social interaction for most of her puppyhood due to the plague.

I will be wearing Cruel Gardenia after my shower. I’m having a real Guerlain-fest lately.

Speaking of which, I will be offering splits at the splitmeet of my new bee bottles: Bois d’Armenie, Tonka Imperiale, Spiritueuse Double Vanille and Cuir Beluga. Are there any other Guerlain scents people would prefer splitting?

Sounds like a great day ahead for you and your dog!

Glad you slept well! Sleep is so important…I suffered from insomnia and poor sleep for years, stress related. It helped me to take magnesium supplements, try to get up early and go out for early morning sun exposure (as it increases the amount of melatonin you produce which is key for getting sleepy at night). Also trying to reduce my screen time and putting my phone on night mode after 8-9.

Yes, I’d do NO, too! But I am sure whatever you offer will be tempting. I once worked with a lady who had Papillons, and her girl love the song “Rock and Roll Part 2” by Gary Glitter. When Janet played the song, and waved her fingers, the pup would stand on her hind legs and wave her front paws and hop! It was so cute.

oh I try to go by house and also by season
I have box issues – should I keep or recycle? some of the boxes are so beautiful and I keep bell jars boxed because they seem fragile.
Clearly these HUGE decisions are what keeps me from tackling this.

          2 October 2021 at 4:48 pm

They are huge decisions, IMHO. Without a organizational scheme that makes sense, we can’t find things. I reorganized everything a couple of years ago, and the samples quickly overwhelmed me.

I have the box dilemma too. They take up so much space, and since I don’t sell anything, I’m not seeing the benefit of keeping the boxes except for the vintage stuff, which I keep in their boxes.

Anyway, good luck! Hopefully it’s a task completed now.

I am another with the box dilemma for all kinds of things. I tried keeping the box for my sewing machine and a Le Creuset pot, but they took up so much space and after a couple years in the attic silver fish found them so out they went. Also, I sometimes find perfume boxes a bit too much when getting it for me. But, for instance with the Iris Torrefie and the Amouage Myths I got recently, I did see how delightful the boxes would be as part of the gift. Sigh; I have gone to keeping the boxes for now.

Good morning NSTers! It’s afternoon for me but I’ve had a very slow start to the day and still feeling a bit sleepy from a long week. Reading with my cat on my lap and trying out a new perfume sample I got on the mail- Anamcara. I’m in an orangey orange blossom cloud. So far my thoughts are – nicer Jo Malone Orange Blossom version.

Have any of you tried it- and if so what did you think of it?

I tried it twice. First time it smelled super fruity. Second time I was able to smell the orange blossom more amongst the fruit. I find it cheerful and pleasant, and I can see your favorable comparison to the Jo Malone.

Scent of the Day RL Safari, for a frantic morning of trying to get the grass mowed before the rain came. That did not quite happen, and I and the mower got quite wet as we finished up. Fortunately, part of the yard is under trees, so the grass stayed mowable a little longer there. Later I notice some green fluid under the mower and I thought oh no, it’s leaking. But then I thought mowers don’t have any fluids other than gas and oil, and that it was a rain-grass “cold brew!” D’oh! But Safari was the perfect scent. All summer I’ve been using patchouli-heavy scent around my ankles and I think that works to keep biting bugs away.

My last free weekend before returning to absolute insanity. The hospital I’m contracted with has hired 3X the travelers they usually do and scrambling to try and get everyone credentialed before Monday. It’s a hot mess, so my expectations are fairly low. ?

So MANY folks wore Montale Intense Cafe yesterday, everyone seeming to enjoy it immensely, prompting me to go on a hunt. I don’t have any coffee forward perfumes. I ❤️ coffee. The lack of a coffee scent seemed to be a gross error on my part. I used to have one by lush (CC) but swapped or freebied it away because I found it too dry. Surely, I had to rectify this lack in my teeny tiny “collection.” I didn’t want to commit to a 50ml, so as I was browsing Twisted Lily,
I saw a Montale Discovery set with 25 2ml spray samples. It included Intense Cafe and many others I’ve been wanting to try…so $65/25 samples = $2.60 per spritz sample vial. I thought this was fairly reasonable. Most of the 25 are “orientals,” “woody,” “citrus,” with a few “florals” thrown in, so very likely I will enjoy quite a few of them.

Donatella certainly won’t be impressed with my minuscule purchase, so I won’t bother disturbing her with it. ?

Today I’m back in a mushroom cloud of l’Elephant, enjoying the overload of spices and sweet fruits while I can. Stupendously beautiful day yesterday, long hike in the morning and remembered my bear spray to boot!

    Happy weekend, stay well! ?

I absolutely love autumn, but must admit to bit of sadness to see the shorter, grayer days after our sunny summer.

I’m in Mx. today which I think fits the fall better than the summer although I loved it then, too. Pondering whether I want to try to split anything at our upcoming splitmeet.

I have housework catch-up this weekend but looking forward to cooking as well: potato leek soup tonight, chili and biscuits tomorrow. Maybe a pumpkin pie!

Mx. is a pretty one, I have a sample I should re-sniff. You smell goooood. :)

I’m hankering for pumpkin pie. Last autumn was off kilter in so many ways, I never baked one. I usually bake three or four during pumpkin season.

    sotd = Luci ed Ombre

I’m wafting and swanning about in a gentle cloud of prettiness, imho! :) Feels good. I love tuberose. Miss the old version of OdlR Oscar.

Wanted to let everyone know I’m still breathing and sniffing and enjoying everyone’s scent choices day to day. I miss spending time here, and hope my work situation will be less demanding in a few weeks so I can catch up. If you know a teacher, please give them a virtual hug or a socially distant high-five. It’s a jungle in education right now.

It’s my birthday today and I’m turning double-something this year. ;) My mum was 22 years old when I was born, so she had a lucky doubles birthday last week. :)

Let’s hope October brings the start of an auspicious season for all of us. Bring on the pumpkins!

Teachers! So unappreciated and underpaid! I had some wonderful ones that really made a difference for me when I was in middle and HS. I hated school (loved college, so weird!) and I think it’s entirely due to these teachers I didn’t drop out and get lost somewhere. They showed more interest in me than my parents most of the time, and we’re always encouraging. So, a big THANK YOU from me to all teachers/educators out there. The job is difficult in the best of times, and those certainly aren’t the times we’re in right now. ?

Lazy Sunday morning here, so much I could be doing, but slumped on the couch is very appealing right now. It’s a dull day, we’ve had a few lovely spring days, but only here and there, the weather hasn’t settled at all.
I’m wearing a tiny dab of Zoologist Bee, it’s insanely powerful stuff. I like it, but I think it’s a little sweet. I’ve been wondering how it compares with Hiram Green’s Slowdive, my sample of that is long gone, so I’ve ordered another.

LV Dans la Peau from a sample I didn’t know I had. Sprayed it, sniffed lightly, then went to check the notes. Boy, on me this is very apricot-forward. We will see if the leather develops. I like it so far, and it’s working for me as I lounge watching football.

Glad to see the splitmeet come up soon. As soon as Cazaubon acquired the Baiser de Russie for me, I knew I’d offered up splits. I considered it for last splitmeet, and Lovestosmellgood, AngelaB and maybe Yasmina seemed interested. Thought I’d give a heads up if you still are.

SOTD = Nina Ricci Nina Extra Rouge

Finally! I got the wrong one initially and it was righted to my great satisfaction with a very reasonable solution. It’s an amped up fruity floral. While I wore it solo this afternoon, I smelled it on paper strip yesterday and improved it by a spritz of vanilla.

The bottle is not flocked. It has a rubbery texture and is matte red. This and the bottle for Nina Rouge are so cute and I am happy to add them to my red bottle collection!

Stay tuned for a separate post on freebies. My definition of regular is different from the official rules.

Freebies post. U.S. only. Regulars only – which means you posted 4x in the September 2021 SOTD and/or September 2021 Lazy Weekend Poll, all on or before September 30, 2021.

In 2019, Lucas started the Magical Traveling Box of Perfumes. As far as I can tell, there were 7 recipients based on the notes left. Each person kept whichever perfume they wanted and recharged the box with more samples, decants and/or bottles. The overflowing box got to me in 3Q 2019 IIRC; if you had been reading for a while, you know it was a very difficult time for my family. Anyway, the box has been sitting in my basement for 2 years and it’s time for it to see the light of day.

I will make 10 packages with the items randomly distributed. Each package will also contain samples from me and perhaps something extra based on our correspondence.

Please call dibs here first, then send me an email (click on my username) with your NST username. Due to the irreplaceable nature of the contents, I cannot be held responsible for missing or damaged packages. I will endeavor to mail the packages by the second week of November.

Happy Weekend, all. I do have a grab bag of random samples and a couple of half decants etc. that I’ll post in the freebiemeet. Just need to get it together to post tomorrow!

Didn’t have any coffee to wear yesterday (though plenty to drink) so wore OJ Woman which really hit the spot. In Geisha Noire today. Again, hitting the spot. It’s been cool here and I’m excited to wear some cool weather favs.

I’ve had the most disturbing dreams since caring for and losing my aunt. Mostly random death stuff or even a regular dream but all the sudden a song from her funeral will play as background music. And they’re sooooo vivid. Sorry to be morbid but ugh. I guess my brain is just firing trying to process it all?

I’m sorry your brain isn’t giving you a chance to relax a bit – it can definitely take a while to process such intense events. I hope the intensity and frequency of the dreams ease and you can remember the good moments with your aunt instead.

Winding down for the night after a busy day. The dogs are shedding their summer coats and vacuuming was a must along with bathroom and kitchen cleaning. Did spend some time putting some things away and spent some time with a friend this evening. All of this is while I wore Memoir. I noticed on my Facebook feed is that it looks like Amouage is doing some kind of line shake up. Haven’t really kept up with Amouage since either Honour or Beloved was released. Sunday will be a lazy day of doing absolutely nothing.

Our Lucy is shedding a lot too — thank goodness for our little robot vacuum, which wanders around sweeping it all up! I’ll have to look into the Amouage situation. I have decants or minis of several of their classics.

Amouage is issuing flankers of a bunch of their older scents in extrait intense versions. The name + a number, with the number being the percentage of perfume oils, some are over 50%! I haven’t tried any though, as I have the original edps which I’m quite happy with.

In Iris Torrefie today and loving it. It seems to be not a great hit in Fragrantica, I wonder why. I find it an amazing iris which is rooty dry but not too much with a bit of warmth and sweetness.

The only iris I like so far is Iris Poudre. How does it compare to that?

I couldn’t properly help there as I have not smelt Iris Poudre for a long time (earlier perfumista days) but I remember it smelling more makeup like. I actually would like to go back to IP see what I think now.

On first try IT reminded me of the beautiful dry iris I loved so much in Xerjoff Iriss (of which I have a sample, but did not go FB as too dry slightly bitter overall for me) but with a warmer slightly sweet leaning base. A winner for me.

They are very different. When I wore Iris Torrefie on Friday, the iris came out front and center (5 sprays because of commute / in-office day) and it is ambery spicy and leathery. Iris Poudre is definitely iris and fizzy up top and it dries down to the most beautiful soft vanilla.

Yes I love the drydown of IP! That’s interesting about the leathery aspect of IT. I’m not really into leather notes in general or iris notes even so this sounds like something I might not like unless the Guerlain base eventually makes an appearance

You smell wonderful! I think IT needs a little time to get to know, but after I went through a split, I got the full bottle. I just noticed this morning that it is still available at regular price in the 75ml bottle here and there. I am not too worried about reformulation since it is a newer scent and is being offered in the new larger bottles, but I like the original bottle.

Far too much… 360 dollars 100 ml. If you buy the largest size and split it, it’s similar price per ml to the old square golden bottles. I also much prefer those to the current one!

Feeling good about another trip to Goodwill yesterday to drop off clothes, shoes, old vacuum cleaner. Now that our adult kids have moved out again and we’re able to reassemble our house after the last year of repairs, repainting, etc., it’s an opportunity to do some clearing out. Once the big stuff is done, I’ll treat myself to reorganizing my fragrances, which will be much more fun. I’m enjoying hanging art in new places, though — we got a number of pieces from my parents’ former home, after my mom died and we sold it, and most haven’t been displayed yet.

No perfume yet as I am having a lazy Sunday on this rainy day.

Tonight we are having Armenian food thru a local “dinner subscription” meal concept. Every week it’s a different country or city and the meal comes with a playlist, historical information and a paired drink selection. It’s a pretty cool idea and the chefs are very talented

It’s certainly made “date night” alot easier – we just move from kitchen table to formal dining room, light some candles and pretend we can’t hear the kids fighting over the remote control in the background ?

It was so quiet when I took the dog out this morning that I could hear the leaves falling in the woods behind our house. What a glorious gift to have experienced that peace.

I’m in Lush’s Pansy today – I finished up a sample of the lotion and since I have a travel spray of it, figured I’d commit fully. I just love the herbal notes in the perfume that I don’t really get from the lotion.

Sotd is the Nuit de Bakélite from last night. I’m always envious of NSTers who can still enjoy their fragrances the next day because so few of them stay with me. But NdB delivers!

We had a fun time last night – a friend and her husband rented a local theatre called The Jewel Box that was built in 1932. It’s a tiny theatre that was used to sell theatre design back in the day.

The 4 of us watched Scorsese’s Shine a Light, his 2008 film of The Rolling Stones benefit concert at the Beacon Theatre. We had all seen it when it came out but there was nothing like watching Mick strut his stuff on the big screen. And Buddy Guy was a phenom!

Chiming in very late to say that the family wedding celebration this weekend was the most beautiful and perfect wedding I’ve ever attended (aside from my own, of course). Perfect setting, perfect weather, perfect behavior on absolutely everyone’s part, and perfect blending of Baptist and Jewish wedding traditions. I wore the dark-juice Gucci EDP to the evening-before dinner event, and SMN Eva to the late-afternoon celebration itself. Can’t think of a single thing to improve on the experience, and am so happy that my favorite niece found her perfect mate. I need a stronger word than “perfect”. ❤️???
