Monday scent of the day 9/20

Posted by Robin on 20 September 2021 236 Comments

It's Monday, and tonight will be the Harvest Moon (it has already looked full here for the last two nights). What fragrance are you wearing?

I've been at the beach all weekend, and I'm commando at the moment. My fragrance plan for the drive home later today is Hermès Eau de Néroli Doré.

Reminder: 9/24 is the birth date of Jim Henson and F. Scott Fitzgerald. Wear whatever fits for whatever reason — scent a muppet or a Fitzgerald character, maybe?

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2021, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Robin, you’ve been at the beach so much this summer I am going to start calling for you Annette! Lol. I’m glad for you!
I am commando too. I am heading out to get my second shot and am very nervous. I took 2 days off in case I get sick. Neither one of my kids did. Fingers crossed!

Getting the second shot was a big relief for me, and I did feel it more than the first, but mostly in how tired it made me. The soreness was about the same as what I get some years from the regular flu shot, but it lasted longer. Hope it goes well for you!!

I am just starting out, but so far I am intrigued! Also the author has a nice way of story telling..and bringing you into this world.

Scent: Goutal Un Matin d’Orage. Evidently released in 2009? Urg! Anyway, at the time, Goutal released perfume pens – or whatever they called it – it was a rollerball, and IIRC they cost $28. At that price, I couldn’t say no. As it turns out, I couldn’t say yes to the aquatic note. (Perhaps this was too soon after finishing off a bottle of Acqua di Gio, and then disliking the replacement.) Today, I still have about half of the rollerball left, and I like it *much* more than I did when it was released.

I’m wearing Nicolai Fig-Tea. Interestingly enough, the info with the box (I bought a full bottle) does not include any mention of figs. However, I checked both Fragrantica and Basenotes and both listed figs in the notes section. Anyway this is the only fig fragrance that I really like, other than Philosykos.

I’m entirely with you on fig scents — the only ones I’ve found that work for me are the Nicolai and the Diptyque. I wanted to love Yesterday Haze (and do love the scent of the sprayer) but there’s something icky in what it does on my skin, and that makes me hesitant to try other fig scents.

I didn’t enjoy Yesterday’s Haze either… smelled too “synthetic” on me/ to my nose. And my favourite fig is Phylosikos too!

I think a lot of fig scents include or seem to recall the scent of coconut, which may be what puts people off them. In my own case, that’s a plus! I especially adore L’Artisan Premier Figuier.

So yesterday I wore Eau de Rhubarbe Ecarlate, I thought it was a very nice powdery-floral, and today I will be putting on Eau de Velours, of the Bottega variety. I did a little moon-gazing after I got home from my double last night, and indeed that moon looked quite full, and bright too.
Question: does anybody else have evaporation problems with their samples? I store mine in little plastic baggies and I’ll go to wear one that’s almost full and find that it had evaporated almost half way, like yesterday’s. I wonder if I am storing them wrong or something?

Yes, most of them don’t seal well so they evaporate. Happens with decants & samples regularly, I’ve even had it with full bottles if the sprayer mechanism wasn’t crimped on properly.

Hmm, I guess there’s nothing I can do about that except make sure the plastic is sealed tight enough. Or maybe just keep the loose ones out. And I had taken off the atomizer pouf from one of my FB’s and replaced it with the cap. Thanks for replying! 🙂

Also this seems to be a tea loving group, if any of you have kids around the ages of 9:00 to 11:00 may I recommend the graphic novel The Tea Dragon Society? Paestum Rose for me today. This one always reminds me of fall and Oktoberfest (I bought it during Oktoberfest time in Munich). Just taking a moment now to enjoy the silence — the kid had volleyball practice before school, which led to a whirlwind of agitated people trying to get out the door, and then blessed quiet. One of the advantages of working from home.

Up early for 7am yoga and planning on a bike ride at 10. My number one goal this winter is fitness, I’ve lost most of my strength due to pandemic staying at home and am determined to get back as much as I can, despite my age. It’s going to be a hard slog.

Wearing Guerlain Nuit d’Amour, one of those sweeter fruitier scents that is a bit much for full summer heat, but perfect for our transitional weather.

I spent all day yesterday rearranging my perfumes and reviewing the perfumes that came back to San Diego from Montreal. One more cupboard to go through and then I’m going to call it finished. I should really catalogue my backup bottles but that is something I’d rather not face right now. Will think about it….

    SOTD: Encens Divin by Givenchy

Heading off to give blood shortly. I learned I’m O- which is highly desirable as the universal blood type and can be given to any other blood type in emergency situations when they don’t know what blood type one might be. I feel special 🙂
I’m committing to giving every 8 weeks; no biggy, and just 6 blocks away + good snacks.

What scent does one wear to give blood??? Lol. Sounds very ghoulish.

O- is pretty special indeed. I say drink a lot of water before as that will make the donation go much faster.

I have O+ but it is lacking one of the letters that come after the blood type that makes it ideal for people who have had transfusions in the past.

I was/am hanging around the I5 corridor trying to make an appointment for pre-employment drug screen and physical, which proved to be harder than it should. Very busy and backed up, which is maybe good, possibly meaning people are getting back to work..? Headed for the coast after my appointment tomorrow. The Oregon coast is my favorite place on earth and now that kids are back in school, I’m hoping the area will be less packed.

I did pass a LUSH yesterday (at a very nice outdoor mall just south of Portland) and stopped in. Unable to smell any perfumes unless you did it through your mask or spritzed on your arm and stepped outside to remove mask and sniff. I really couldn’t be bothered, but did spot a few new-to-me scents I may explore in the future.

Ended up with a leave in conditioner for curly hair, a moisturizing bar (forget what they’re called) and a sample of some honey shampoo. Has anyone used the “Curl Power” leave in? I purchased the smallest tub in case it doesn’t work for me.

    Blah, blah, blah!

The point of this post is that I’m CP compliant in En Voyage Zelda! I love this dark, voluptuous, humid perfume. It’s even better on cooler mornings, though it works in warm weather for me as well. I may wear it all week!

Happy Monday and stay well NSTers!

Oh yes! So many! Will you be road tripping and hoteling or camping? I would really take your time meandering down 101. I love the Cape Perpetua area the most, but that just me. It’s minimally developed, has a couple lovely campgrounds, some good short hikes (The Hobbit Trail), plus I love small towns like Yachates and Florence. I haven’t explored 101 in northern Oregon as much as the southern part because the southern part was more accessible when I was contracted for a couple of winters in Salem. You can’t go wrong ANYWHERE on the coast!
        An example:

??This was in Brookings, on the southern coast, but really, the ENTIRE coast is lovely!

Yes, I did! I cut very conservatively, just to see if I was going to get the shape I wanted and it worked well. The next time I’m in a hotel/motel, I’ll take another inch or two off. I used regular ✂️ which I cannot recommend! Planning on using a better pair next time.

Excellent — so glad it worked! I watched a few of the guy’s videos and was entertained. He does recommend “actual haircutting scissors” several times ? so that might be a good idea. That said, I often trim my own bangs using tiny nail scissors, and my hairdresser (bless her heart) swears that I do a decent job. I choose to believe her. ?

What a great picture Robin, and so happy you’ve had so much beach time this summer! I’m hoping to get back one more time this year, too. I think our full moon will be hidden tonight but we are having much needed rain, so that is fine. I’m staying in and baking cookies. SotD my recent purchase of Cuir Beluga – I blame Undina for her post about the end of the L’Art et La Matiere line. I was not going to miss any of them, but when I saw they are still around at regular price, and given that I love Iris Torrefie, I did lemming on for sentimental reasons. I will be hoping until proven otherwise that the new apothecary bottles will have the same good stuff, but that’s for next year’s purchases. I guess I think Cuir Beluga (mine is a new bottle) is very pricey for a scent I find quite soft. However it is also very enjoyable, and not like anything else I have, so no regrets. Iris Torrefie remains a real love. Like several people very near and dear to me, it is not as shy as it seems when given the right setting! 😀

I can see that being the case – after reading many reviews, someone got me thinking (overthinking?) that the Cuir Beluga is for the living whale – his white, vanilla parfait, pure and sweet self, not some cured leather hide.

I think you smell great! I thought the same about Cuir Beluga in the beginning and took me a decant to properly sample and appreciate its glory. If you like L’Heure Bleue, the combination is really nice (I find). 2 sprays Cuir Beluga 1 or half of LHB 🙂

I’m trying to breathe shallowly all day — more fires have been sending smoke to blanket my little town…….

My SOTD is Aramis Calligraphy. Not as much oud as one would expect, this seems to me to be reminiscent of a really good 80s masculine. It’s not earth-shatteringly different or swoon-worthy, but it’s solid. I like both the Saffron and Rose flankers better.

I hope you get some rain! I’ve been in the path of drifting smoke and it’s horrible to have to breathe that junk in even a short period of time. Is this all smoke from the California wildfires or is there something burning closer to you home?

For a while, it’s been from the wildfires all over the state, but then we got about a week of reprieve. This time, it’s a small (15 acre) brush fire close to home, combined with the continuing fires in the Sequoia National Forest, which is just over the mountains to the west.

Chanel “Pour Monsieur”, a failsafe choice for a day with zero time to think about perfume before running out the door. TOMK is back to Spanish classes so I met up in town for brunch – sadly the places I had shortlisted either had no tables free or close on Mondays (how would I know? I never do brunch on Mondays!). So in the end it was just coffee and a croissant which IS NOT BRUNCH!

I went to the beach in the evening – few people and a very off-season vibe even though it’s still in the mid-20s C . Well, I will be a crazy foreigner and keep going for a few weeks yet, until the clocks go back and we lose the evening daylight until Spring. :^)

Crazy watching the volcano on La Palma – last night the news was showing the initial explosion and 2 houses caught in the flow; tonight it’s gone up to 100 houses and a school destroyed in the slow, relentless advance towards the sea.

With all with what’s wrong in the world, I will add one more today. I have another one that has to wait.

Bath & Body Works – there’s always some kind of sale going on. Doing the math, I was definitely happier with $3.50 each for a soap (vs. $7.50-$8.50 or vs. 4 for $20 / 6 for $27). I was only able to find 2 that I liked so I brought them to the register and the cashier said $18.13 and I said impossible since it was $3.50 each! I told the cashier that there was a sign with that pricing and she looked at me skeptically. I went back to where I saw the sign and sure enough it was still there. There were 3 other SAs – one said the sign wasn’t there in the afternoon (OKAAAYYY, and where would I have found the sign to place it there???), the other said I can only purchase the soaps that were displayed there (NAH, WRONG, the sign did not say this shelf or display only) and the 3rd said that sale ended yesterday (you’re not doing me any favors, I know my rights as a consumer). Seriously people, they worry too much about stocking shelves, as they should, but they need to 1) do a better job of controlling how many signs and where they post them so there’s no rogue signs and 2) follow the merchandising info so there is no decision to be made as to product placement. Unbelievable!

My state used to have a law that those mistakes had to be honored plus you could get up to 5 dollars back for each item overcharged ( if you had completed the first transaction) they did away with it about ten years ago but most places still will give you the signed price.
I also noticed that bbw changed their usual sale to buy 3 get 1 free instead of 2 free.

hajusuuri, I’m feeling your pain. I went through the drive through pharmacy at Rite-Aid yesterday, to drop off a prescription. The pharmacy clerk told me they were out of that medication, and that I should go to Walmart instead. I asked her why she couldn’t order more, since, um, it’s a pharmacy. She told me she wouldn’t be able to tell me when the new stock would arrive. I expressed my surprise that Rite-Aid was absolutely out of a standard prescription sleep aid, apparently didn’t want to get more of said sleep aid, and even if they did want to, they couldn’t manage to tell me when it would arrive. We went back and forth a few times, until my disgust with the entire situation just made me laugh and tell her, “Never mind. Clearly, I now have to go set up another account at a different pharmacy.”

What on earth is happening, people?

Oh, I had a pharmacy issue, too! I ordered my two regular meds via CVS’s automated phone refill system, and the “man in the machine” told me it would be ready for pick up in SEVEN days..! I called the pharmacy directly to inquire why the refills would take so long, was told “oh, we are filling them right now!” So, me being a self-flagellating idiot, I ask why the MitM told me a week, she says, “oh, don’t pay any attention to that. It’s never right..” So my question to her was “Why does CVS use a system that is inaccurate and plainly doesn’t work?” Just got giggles in return..! How much money did CVS pay for this ? system?! The cost of which is being passed down to consumers, I’m sure!! Omg! I can’t stand inefficient systems. Drives me up a wall ?
If I end up in hell when I kick it, it will filled with all kinds of circuitous calls “press one for his disciple, press two for his minion, etc…” when I’m trying to get a hold of the Devil himself, hurry up and wait in line for said Devil to appear because he’s 3 hours late, and computer programs that explain the rules of Hell but end sending my to the IRS website..!

I think it’s overworked people and new people coming in are not trained properly. Plus the systems implemented per Deva’s comment below are illogical.

SOTD- Mademoiselle Guerlain (galbanum and marshmallows)
And coming home after work, a spray of Vamp a New York. I find this one almost gourmand… I think it’s my favourite tuberose.

Wearing Bottega Veneta, I have been craving it and couldn’t locate my bottle, finally dug it out yesterday. Such a perfect transitional scent. Someone mentioned Cuir de Lacombe recently and it got me craving pretty leathers.

    Afternoon edition!

Day off due to migraines- my body’s way of saying too much, too soon, too much!

Am testing Perfect Intense. It’s very lovely, actually – warm, ambery amd almondy- jasmin-y . It dries down to a rich almond/floral powder. Really unisex- this would smell amazing on those who identify as male!

But is it $138 perfect? I mean, the bottle is tacky and clumsy? I don’t know! I rolled my eyes at Decadence- the tacky weird bottle design, the weird dumb title- but it was really good plummy loveliness, and it has lasted for a couple of years after buying the small bottle.

I would suggest getting the small $30 bottle! I think this would be a pretty scent for early fall, and it seems to last on pulse points.

I haven’t smelled that one yet, but I got my daughter a travel spray of the regular Perfect for her birthday. She got a sample from Sephora and whenever she wore it, I was always asking her what she was wearing because she smelled so good!
Hope your migraine is gone soon, Ede.

Perfect is a scent that is more “Oh gosh, you smell so good” than a Grand Perfume, and Perfect Intense is very much more of “You smell so good, let me hug you” type of fragrance.

I took some medicine, and I am just taking it slow. Thank you!

Another gorgeous late summer day in my neck of the woods, so to speak. I enjoyed the weekend commentary on transitional scents, but haven’t given any thought about them personally. I am just going to wear whatever moves me and wafts gently about me. Not wearing any perfume blockbusters yet.

Went grocery shopping today, only to discover that some things that had never been out earlier during the pandemic were missing from store shelves this time. ? Time to try another store, I guess.

SOTD = more Passage d’Enfer. I did see at least one NSTer refer to this as a transitional scent, so maybe partial credit for me as of late?

We are having weird things running out here too Jalapeño. Last week there was hardly any cheeses and yesterday the milk! We still have irregular bouts of toilet paper/tissue/kitchen paper towels shortages.
One excellent pandemic related overload is avocados! They are the cheapest they’ve been infers because no cafes are open, so no smashed avo toasts or BLATs. We are loving it.

Envious of your avocado surplus! The ones I got today are hard as rocks and will need a few days to soften up before they are edible. Not seeing ones from Cali or Mexico… today’s were Peruvian.

Cat food has been another thing that is erratic in supply. I’ve learned that when I see the stuff my cats like (and won’t make them throw up), I should get it while I can.

I’ve got Bottega Parco Palladiano III (Pera) on one wrist and V (Lauro) on the other for comparison since they are both herb-focused.

The III is fresh herbs, including a sweet garden mint, blended with woody notes and a hint of pear skin (not really the pulp). The rose and musc add an underlying fullness and softness. This is sweeter and more floral than the V.

The V is fresh herbs with vetiver underneath. The laurel is the most prominent herb, followed by mint, and the herbs are present and rounding it out, but not individually identifiable to my nose. Like holding an herb bouquet outside on a crisp, dry morning. This is crisper and cooler than the III.

Drinking Fortnum & Mason’s Rwandan tea.

I found a bag of TF samples in my rummaging this weekend, so I’m in Mandarino Neroli di Amalfi Acqua la Portofino di Positano la Sole Forte today. They all seem nice, some are soapy, some are a little too aquatic, some are too sweet. It’s just too confusing, and they are pricey, so it’s a no from me. ??

I’m sampling Florentine Iris from Ermenegildo Zegna. I received a set of their samples when ordering something and was initially really turned off that these were so strongly labeled for men, why not unisex or not state the sex? But they are a mensware brand, so I should cut them some slack! Pun intended! Lol. But back to the Iris, I really do quite like it since I’m a huge fan of iris. It reminds me of Prada’s Infusion d’Iris but with more heft and a hint of ambroxan (that warm woody-ness).
