Tuesday scent of the day 7/6

Posted by Robin on 6 July 2021 162 Comments

It's Tuesday and National Fried Chicken Day. Birthdays: Frida Kahlo, Hilary Mantel. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Berdoues Assam of India for today's heat advisory (we're expecting heat index values between 100 to 104). Tea at the moment is an iced latte with a bit of nutmeg.

Reminder: on 7/9 we're honoring Ice Cream month. Tell us your favorite flavor, share a recipe if you like, and wear any perfume that you think fits the project.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2021, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: shown is Earl Grey Tea & Shortbread Cookies ice cream from McConnell's Fine Ice Creams at Facebook.

I guess it’s licorice week for me since my favourite ice cream has licorice ribbons in it (and I have fond memories of Swensen’s licorice ice cream, black as tar but much tastier). Today I’m wearing 1999-vintage Yohji Homme: the top is starting to go a bit haywire but the rest of it is sublime, black licorice, coffee, leather, and carnation. It’s just intoxicating.

I don’t remember ever eating licorice ice cream, ever. I do not know if it is because it was never on offer, or ? Seems like I would eat if if I saw it.

If I recall correctly, you’re as devoted to Marvis Amarelli Licorice toothpaste as I am, so I think you would enjoy licorice ice cream. You should come to Canada some time, get some Tiger Tail ice cream. You’ll like it. You can try butter-tart ice cream while you’re at it.

I love Jeni’s peanut butter chocolate chip, and I love it even more because everyone else in my family hates it. There is nothing worse than going for your ice cream and discovering someone else ate it all. (My favorite used to be Graeter’s black cherry chocolate chip, but that one is impossible to keep safe in my house, even hidden inside other containers in the freezer — yes, I’ve tried.)

I vaguely remember seeing licorice ice cream *somewhere* when I was a kid. But I hated that flavor then. Now I would definitely try it!

Another heat wave is here. Heat index in the 100’s, so I am drenched in Serge Lutens L’Eau Froide. Such a great refreshing citrus, incense scent! It has become one of my favorites for unbearable hot days.
Having iced coffee and a handful of plantain chips.

I should stop reading these posts as my shopping list (for my personal as well as mr f’s use) is getting longer and longer. I wish he would be quicker with finishing his bottles:)

Great SOTD Robin, I have only tested the Assam out of the Berdoues line. How is the rest of the line?

Today’s pick from the sample glass was Rivières de Cartier – Allégresse. It helped me survive the 8km bike ride to work (snail speed) but did not make it through the ride back home so had to reapply.

I really love the cute three-pack of the Rivières samples but at least this one will not be upgraded to a full bottle although it is nice and refreshing. Another 113€ saved to Saint Donatella’s horror?

    Happy Tuesday!

The ones I have tried have been fine / wearable, which is what I would call Assam of India. I would not say I love any of them. If the Assam of India did not have elephants on the bottle I would not care about it, insofar as citrus tea scents are not hard to come by, and I already have the brilliant Carthusia Mediterrano.

Interestingly, Robin, that one (Mediterraneo) is among the ones I’ve found in searching for something with the combination of lemon and thyme. I even have a small bottle of it, but somehow it doesn’t conjure up my beloved lemon thyme ice cream. I think that might be because there’s too much of a tea note in it.

No, there is not enough thyme for that. Oyedo has more thyme, but also more of other things…that wouldn’t quite be lemon thyme ice cream either.

We are having a tropical storm/almost a hurricane passing us as I’m writing this, lots of wind and rain (but our town will be ok). To compliment this stormy weather I’m wearing SQUID. I have been craving squid lately and finally it is the perfect day to wear it. You know how for example Herba Fresca is a genius fragrance in the fresh category? Squid is just genius in a oceanic/marine inspired class. The best of it? There is zero ozonic or aquatic notes just deep, dark and murky ocean depths…

Believe it or not out of my window I noticed some sparks out of the power lines that run parallel to our house. Now we are in the middle of 70mph winds and tons of rain. We lost power in PARTS of the home. Weird. One fridge and one bathroom light are the ones that stopped working after I noticed these electric sparks outside.

Back to work after a long weekend. I already miss the beach, the picnic, and the fireworks. OK, maybe not the fireworks. They are still going off in my neighborhood, and have been since mid-June. Thankfully, they are more subdued than last year, when they began at the beginning of May and continued to September.

Anyway, Pomelo Paradis for a hot day.

Morning all, My SOTD is Vanille d’Iris by Ormond Jayne, beautiful powdery iris.
Yesterday, I discovered a pile of samples that I didn’t realize I had. I’ll pull one from the basket each day this week. Some don’t have labels so this could be an adventure!

I have an excess of buckwheat flour, I found an interesting recipe for French Galettes that I’ll make for supper tonight. :)

On my second cup of coffee and commando so far – have to head out to the yard and pull a mess o’ weeds pretty soon, and don’t want to attract bunches of bees. We planted a new tree in the front yard yesterday and it’s adorable – hope it survives the summer. It’s a stewartia pseudocamellia (in case anyone is wondering).

That is a very pretty tree! It seems like a combination of a crepe myrtle and a magnolia, with extra pretty fall color thrown in for good measure! I hope it will do well. I am hiding inside today, but I will say that yesterday, once I got outside and acclimated, I really enjoyed my weeding, etc. and the heat! Kinda the opposite of a polar plunge!

Got my second shot today and junior (14) got her first. Our contribution to getting rid of this coronavirus!

Loving and wearing Perris Monte Carlo Vanille de Tahiti, which was love at second sight. Isn’t that always surprising when you write off a perfume and then fall in love with it later?

Received a cheap thrill bottle of Zara Holistic Flow today. Passion fruit that turns sweet just when you think it is turning (too) tart. Yummmm!

Today’s scents so far: native blackberries that we amended our breakfast with and that smelled surprisingly like Mure et Musc; vanilla-laden cinnamon-walnut bread warming in the toaster; the cool damp of the still-foggy earth (but warming up fast!). Sadly, I think I’m going to have to cancel our big summer-vacation trip to Yosemite next week as it’s supposed to get dangerously hot again — hiking in 97-degree heat does *not* sound pleasant, nor potentially getting stuck in traffic jams when it’s pushing 110 near our hotel…

Perfume-wise, I can feel two conflicting impulses shouldering at each other in my psyche — one still wanting to avoid perfume because of its emotionality, and one starting to want to reclaim it for myself. I know the latter will eventually win! :)

I’m in the Zara/Jo Malone Amalfi Sunray today because a sheer, linear orange blossom + citrus sounded refreshing on this 96-degree scorcher of a day. I ordered the discovery set of these from Zara weeks ago and it finally arrived yesterday (in a damaged box with no cushioning!) Luckily the samples were ok.

Drinking a pot of Earl Gray.

Hi everyone! It’s my day off. My daughter and I took a trip to the local Zoo. We went early before it became too hot or crowded. We just finished lunch, and will have to run errands in a bit. I only wore sunscreen at the Zoo, but now I am wearing Miami Glow body mist.

I’m wearing O de Lancome again today just because it’s so refreshing and I enjoyed it yesterday. I’m expecting an HVAC repairman any time soon and didn’t want to wear anything too overbearing.
I remembered another kind of good ice cream. Back in the day some 30+ years ago when I made ice cream, I tried some fun flavors, among them pumpkin spice which turned out quite well. But the best one was cranberry! It was not only tart and delicious but came out the most beautiful rich deep pink color. That one was a hit. I’m not sure it would make a good fragrance to wear, though, so I’ll stick with my search for something with lemon and thyme.

    1) SOTD: Petals fragrance from Beauty Pie. It’s gonna hit the 90s today but the morning is perfect and this scent is really lovely right now.

    2) Welp, the company cancelled our meetings and we have not received any notices that we were told we would get today. But our paychecks arrived perfectly on time so….

I’ve been busy and so have not been posting or even reading much, but my SOTD is for one of the recent CPs I missed — EL Private Collection Tuberose Gardenia. This is one that I bought some years ago, unsniffed, and decided I didn’t like on me. I grabbed it yesterday thinking it was White Linen (both are in their boxes in my stuffed-to-capacity wooden perfume chest) and didn’t realize my error until I sprayed it. And guess what? It’s beautiful on me now. I sprayed with abandon this morning (or at least, with what I thought was abandon for a white floral — but now, five hours on, it is wearing very light and close to the skin).

I don’t know if the shift in my assessment is because it’s hot and muggy and that suits this fragrance, or if my tastes are changing, or if my body chemistry is. Of course, now I am thinking I should NEVER get rid of a scent because I don’t like it; things change. ;)

    SOTD = Guerlain Ginger Piccante

I think ginger would make a great ice cream flavor enhancer. I believe Aftelier has fresh ginger Chef Essence and you can use a drop to add to your ice cream du jour.

Francesca Bianchi Tyger Tyger today for the peach note. I was using an ice cream I recently ate as inspiration: Jeni’s Sweet Cream Biscuits & Peach Jam. My partner gave me a Jeni’s gift card for my birthday in April so I took it upon myself to have 8 pints shipped to me. That was in May, and now there are only two pints left in my freezer. ?

Well, Google says yes because of bacterial contamination, but the timeframe is all over place. I also checked my two remaining Jeni’s pints, and they both have freezer burn ice crystals. Grr, definitely going to finish them this week after scraping off the ice.

Ice cream can get freezer burn in an opened container. It it’s still sealed, I wouldn’t worry. Voice of experience on the freezer burn, BTW.

I’ve heard that if you place a layer of waxed paper over the top of the ice cream after it’s opened, then it can create a “seal” on it. I’ve done that and it seemed to work. I pressed it gently on the top of the ice cream so that no air can reach it.
