Tuesday scent of the day 4/6

Posted by Robin on 6 April 2021 194 Comments

It's Tuesday, plus New Beer’s Eve and Tartan Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

Once I wake up a bit more, my plan is vintage Jicky, which I'm pretty sure boasts the earliest launch date (1889!) in my collection.

Reminder: 4/9 will be Antiquities Friday...wear the oldest scent you own (you can interpret this as you like — the one you've owned the longest? worn the longest? the earliest launch date? whatever). Suggested by pyramus.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2021, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the tartan stoneware is by Anta in Scotland. I'm not sure you can still get the exact teapot shown, but they do have lots of teapots (including several tartan models) ranging from £78 to £98.

House twins! I have never even smelled Jicky. Today I am in L’Heure Bleue, a comparative youngster from 1912 (afaik). Reveling in my WFH deliciousness.

Now for another cup of coffee (half-caff espresso). And there will be a long walk today — I have meetings all afternoon but should be able to get out around 5 and enjoy the sunshine.

Skalolazka, I have question about L’Heure Blue Edp. I remember it from my childhood as having a bright note but when I wear it it feels subdued. Is it me or a reformulation?

Hm. I occasionally get something that could be called “bright” but it is a very powdery brightness — or rather, a very slight bright powderiness. I think I remember a family friend wearing LHB when I was very small (early 1970s); she is the person I pictured immediately upon smelling this fragrance again a few years ago. But I am afraid that I cannot answer your question with any confidence. I bet there are some LHB aficionadoes here who could help!

    In Diorissimo today.
Having plain coffee with a big slice of wild berries orchard pie.
Busy morning with meetings and then taking my mother this afternoon to the second dose of the vaccine.
Another warm, sunny and beautiful day in the city.

    Happy Tuesday, everyone! ?

So happy your Mother is done! Fruit pie is *always* a breakfast choice in this house! And, of course you smell wonderful – Diorissimo, Shalimar, and Je Reviens are the scents that gave me my love of perfume. I have a giant patch of lilies of the valley and their green spears are shooting up en masse – looks like a good year for them and me!

LOL! I drink more plain coffee than the flavored ones, especially if I have sweets with it.

I am relieved mom is done with the vaccine. My second one is in almost 3 weeks.

I have one last sample of CK be from 1996, which I liked enough to snag and use several samples of but not enough to buy. You’re supposed to really slosh it on, so a little glass vial would not do the job: these were basically tiny black aluminum milk cans holding about 3 mL — some of them came packaged with a fridge magnet. The scent is… *weird*. It hasn’t gone off: it’s always been weird, less approachable than CK one, a jangle of fizzy fresh notes, abstract florals, greenery, and laundry musk, none of it remotely identifiable — it’s reflected in the funhouse mirror of modern chemistry. It’s bizarrely compelling, though: there’s a reason it’s still in production.

Jicky is another thing I never liked enough to buy: I came close a couple of times, but then I realized, “I’ll never wear this.”

    House triplets!
I am wearing the beautiful Samsara.
I am sipping on some gardenia oolong tea and having a few tea biscuits.
Talking about Guerlain, I still am angry at myself for not buying a bottle of Nahema parfum when I knew it was being discontinued. :(

Sampling Lubin Kismet today. I don’t see any similarity to Shalimar in this, on me it is a pretty floral incense, sweeter than what I generally wear, and it seems suitable for spring somehow. I keep sniffing my hand…I’ll see if it is as attractive on a second wearing. The back story seems silly, is it even true? I like the bottle…
I also love the tartan tea set! You find the most interesting images, Robin.

It’s muggy out there, but blessedly not too warm yet. I’m in White Linen (launch date = 1978) from a mini that smells just like it did back then. When I first started commenting here, I asked for advice about finding vintage perfumes without breaking the bank. A wise NSTer suggested minis, and she was so right! Inexpensive and usually in great shape from being tossed in a drawer and forgotten.

Well, the Magical Box of Assam bit the dust, so I’m drinking Scottish Breakfast + Stash chai this morning. Stepson coming over tomorrow for his birthday celebration, so hubster and I will make applesauce cake with cream cheese icing today. ?

I hope everyone has a safe and happy Tuesday! ?

Be careful. Take prophylactic ibuprofen and if you start feeling bad, take a break immediately! I know someone who spiked a sudden chills and fever reaction at 2:00 in the afternoon the next day. It went away by dinner time, but give your body a chance to adjust and deal if you need to!

I’m in Acqua di Santa Maria Novella today. I think that one was allegedly created in the sixteenth century? Thought of L’Heure Bleue but it didn’t feel right this morning. Maybe tonight.

Back to the grindstone today. At least I can work in relative peace, with the kid back at school. Thanks to the date of Easter, we had two weeks of spring break, then 3.5 days of school, then a four-day weekend (that is only a four-day weekend for the kids and teachers). No one popping into my meetings to introduce herself today!

Thank you all for your well wishes for my #4 over the weekend. I wanted to let you know that all is well. My strange little spot is “in situ,” which apparently is the equivalent of stage 0 cancer—so not very scary. I have a surgery date all lined up. In the scheme of things, hardly worth mentioning. I am really relieved. (So relieved in fact that I just closed the webpage on nearly $200 worth of candles in an online cart. . . ;-) Money saved!)

I’ve had seven of those bad little spots, and now have seven inch-long scars as souvenirs. Scary at first, because your doctors will tell you to make sure your hairdresser, dentist and eye doctor (and masseuse, if you’re lucky enough to have one of those) are all watching out for oddities. Had a nice bout of depression over it all, but eventually it became just another routine annoyance in the back of my brain. And I got really good at removing stitches. :)

That’s wonderful news. I’ve had two stage zero melanomas and have been fine since they were removed. The first one was in 2001, when I was 25.

Be kind to yourself – it’s a weird feeling/ situation to deal with!!

Yesterday was a good day and today started out pretty good. One of my friends had messaged me on Facebook asking for money and a place to live. I would like to help but just can’t take anyone else’s problems on. Wearing Deneuve today and trying to enjoy this warm weather in spite of what happened.

Wow, that’s a lot of nerve, unless you’re really close. I’m sure it’s stressful though. I too have a friend in trouble now and in fact in a women’s shelter due to a very bad marital situation. I have thought of offering her temporary space here with me but just am not ready to take all that on. I do worry about her though.

Her husband could never hang onto a job for very long and if she thinks about having to work she freaks out. There are grocery stores that have night shift stockers. I have my problems too and can’t take anyone else’s on. This issue is of their own making compounded with Covid.

It feels rude to say no but you have to put on your own oxygen mask before you help anyone else. If you’re not in a position to offer the help immediately, it’s OK to say no.

I’m enjoying banana bread for breakfast today. I made it yesterday afternoon, and it’s the first “regular” one I’ve made in awhile, delicious! The last few loaves have been experiments in gluten-free for my husband. While they turned out perfectly edible, they weren’t quite what I would have preferred if I had my druthers.

I’m going to wear L’Artisan Mure et Musc today, possibly my oldest bottle of L’Artisan, from around 2000. It’s a set of 3 travel sprays and came in a cute felted grey pouch with purple lining. L’Artisan really had wonderful packaging in the early days!

My husband does make excellent gluten free buckwheat banana walnut pancakes, but I have not even tried to do banana bread.

Gf banana bread (and pumpkin bread and zucchini bread and pretty much any other sweet quick bread) is easy! I have celiac disease, and my son is allergic to milk and wheat, so I’ve made dairy-free versions as well, mostly from just modifying recipes with 1 for 1 gf flours. I’ve even messed around with them when I didn’t have quite the right ingredient here or there, but they always turn out great as long as I err on the side of more banana.

That’s good to know. I should buy some proper 1 for 1 gf flours. The one I use doesn’t have xanthan gum, which seems to be a thing in most gluten-free substitution. Mine turns out decent, but it tends to feel a bit “sludgey” and lacks the airy crumb of a normal bake.

You smell wonderful – I found my vintage 1oz Habinita (guessing it’s ’70’s-’80’s-ish) at a antique mall in the same booth with this fabulous giant conch shell and got both for about $10. The shell is on my fireplace ledge and the Habinita is deep in the less-used part of “The Collection.” Need to change that….

    Hi everyone
Its been a while…. Mostly because work is so busy. And tiresome. The project i am working for is quite a bumpy ride.

if i have spare time / energy left, i spent it on physical activities (walking, running, horse riding) or social stuff (visiting my parents, friends..).
But at the moment there is less time left for perfume or other hobbies.
So I havent tried any new. scents. But for now I am perfectly happy with what I already have.

Sotd is Samsara, edp from a vintageish mini.
    It smells divine.

I hope everyone is healthy and doing well here!
And If the project becomes less bumpy and is on the rails, ill hope to be here more often again!

Not sure if you’ll see this. It still has the same appearance but the canister is made from plastic. It looks okay but has come apart the few times I’ve used it. It does pop back together quite easily. I only bought a 30 ml of the current EDT so maybe the larger bottles still use metal canisters? In any case, I enjoy looking at it as part of my collection.

SOTD is Tauer Au Couer du Desert from LuckyScent’s unisex samples pack. I understand the appeal, but it’s not for me. I think of the main note as amber, because if I had to conjure a substance to match what I’m smelling, it would definitely be amber, but maybe this is actually ambergris? Either way, the frag is too spicy for me.

Drinking 2nd flush Darjeeling from Clippership Tea and having an afternoon snack of almond cake with strawberry jam (surprisingly yummy strawberry jam from from Target’s organic house brand – I got it bc I want to use the empty jar for a candle. I’m a jam snob and didn’t expect to enjoy this as much as I do)

If you are finding Au Coeur de Desert too spicy, then you can steer clear from its parent fragrance, L’Air du Desert Morocain. It has even more heft and spice.

SotD for our first hot day is EL Intuition. It “shows to go ya” that one should never say never about a scent note: grapefruit is usually a big fail for me, but it is so present and so enjoyable to me in Intuition. Work has been taking off again – more calls, more meetings. We staff got a bonus 3 hours pay, or up to three hours paid absence for going to get a shot during the work day. The two things are related in our bosses’ minds, and I don’t know but that I agree!

Another long day. Driving home I noticed what I think was a stink bug in my car. I was so worried it would want to get in my hair! I had to keep one eye on the road and the other eye on the bug. I didn’t want to lose sight of him, because obviously I would never be able to get in my car again ? once I got home he was just sitting on my drivers side panel so I got out on the passenger side!. Left the window down and waited for him to make his way to the outside of the car. I’m ridiculous, I know.

If it’s a stink bug, I’d be concerned about squishing it! They smell terrible after getting swatted… I learned the hard way. ?

I’m with you, lillyjo! I always get a panic feeling when there’s a bug in the car with me. Glad you survived. :D

Not participating again today- I’m Paris Riviera which isn’t old in any way but it sure is good! Goodness it hit the spot today. I’ll get it together for the rest of the week with the project.

Such a lonnnng day at work, I need to crash at like 8:00 tonight, ugh.
