Thursday scent of the day 12/31

Posted by Robin on 31 December 2020 433 Comments

It's Almost-Friday and Almost-2021. It's also the seventh day of Christmas and the sixth day of Kwanzaa. (Two PSAs: You still have another day to enter our Aftelier giveaway! And the damage poll is coming up on Tuesday.) What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Frédéric Malle Une Rose.

Reminder: 1/1 is New Years Day...Rabbit rabbit rabbit! Adios, 2020. Wear a perfume that will bring you good luck in 2021.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2021, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

My SOTD is Serge Lutens Un Bois Vanille mixed with a tiny spritz L’ Artisan’s Patchouli Patch. Very cozy combination.
I was woken up by a 3.6 earthquake just north of us in Muir Woods. Smokey is very clingy.
Farewell to Dawn Wells, aka Mary Ann from Gilligan’s Island.
I’m sore from yesterday’s workout. I ran stairs, did calisthenics, and walked four miles.
Latest cheap thrill for my desperately dry, chapped hands, Healing Ointment from Walgreens. Same ingredients as the ointment by CeraVe ($11.99), but it’s only $2.

Muir woods is one of my favorite places on earth – so incredibly beautiful and peaceful. :)

Indeed. I loved being able to drive home and see the outline of Mt. Tam.
But today I am seeing all the snow covered mountains clear to Mt. Baldy.

        Same to you!
Yes, I can’t believe I ran stairs yesterday (15 minutes). My backside is a little sore today! So trying to ease myself into it.
I’ll do the stairs in Sutro Park today. It’s a favorite but it’s a real butt-killer! To avoid knee injury, I’ll do 15 minutes a few times a week, and gradually increase as tolerated. I read somewhere stairs are just as cardio intensive without the risk of injury to hips and knees.

As cardio intensive as? I sometimes put my treadmill on incline but can’t yet do it on a jog 🙊 I do have to remind myself to only compare myself to myself because I need exercise but am extremely Non-athletic. 😅

Yes, stairs are pretty cardio intensive, much like running.
At 53, I remind myself, just be active, every day, and to be kind, I’m not training for the Olympics. I’ve thought of getting a spin cycle, but the $$ is something I’m not sure is a good idea right now.

Sounds like you are more than just active every day – which is fantastic! I’m about ten years and a relative couch potato – but at least evolving!

Muir Woods is one of the most sublime (in the classical sense) places on earth.
I hope that the earth does not add to California’s troubles.

Happy New Year, ST! I have been letting my Fitbit boss me around to getting 10,500 steps in most days. My right hip complained about that some….re: perfume, if you think of it, do you have a favorite patchouli? Also, I will share that I have only ever experienced an earthquake once, in Indiana. We were about 100 mile from the epicenter of the 5.2 quake. It around 5:30 am; I was dozing and about ready to get up for work when I heard and soon felt a rumble; our kitty jumped off the bed which began to shake and the rumble slightly increased. I’ll never forgot how my brain quickly parsed that there was nothing driving or flying close to my house, and that the sound and shaking were under me: “this is an earthquake,” my brain said. I must admit that my fascination outweighed my fear (my brain may have been sorting the fact that I was in a sturdy, one-story house not near a major fault line) but it lasted just long enough for me to be sure of what I had felt and wonder if I should make a run outside. Later when I was at work, there was an aftershock, and so my co-workers and I together could verify what we felt.

I do have several favorite patchouli scents. Most are mossy, green patchouli, like Estee Lauder’s Knowing, Clinique’s Aromatics Elixir (in edt formulation, hard to find, it has less moss and herbs, more patchouli), and Coriandre.

For straight up patchouli, I adore Patchouli Patch by L’Artisan Parfumeur, Classic Patchouli Von Eusersdorff, Patchouli Leaves by Montale, Voleur de Roses L’Artisan Parfumeur, and Patchouli Elixir Reminiscence.
Yes, earthquakes are quite something if you’ve never experienced one previously! I remember one on Long Island, back in the late 1970s, I never realized there is a fault line!

Thanks SmokeyToes; I saved your suggestions. I did not know AE had a edt – good to know. And you reminded me that Von Eusersdorff was on my test list once before. Well, the budget needle resets today soooooo let the lemming list begin!!

I was going to say, Harrods carried Aromatics Elixir in EDT, it was on the website last month – but it’s now gone from the website. Bummers. Perhaps check discount websites.

    Ciao a tutti!
Tonight we are ordering Thai food, I am dressing up and don’t know what thrift store find I will wear. I have this purple Missoni suit that I love, but may want to wear a dress. It will just be me and my husband and we will let the kids stay up a little later.

I am making my egg nog cocktail, almond milk egg nog, ameretto and stole vanilla vodka over ice.

Tonight I will wear Shalimar Vanille but I am currently in Shalimar creamsicle version

That sounds like a wonderful New Year’s! I love good Thai food, Thai Time in the inner Richmond district (8th & Clement) has been my favorite for years. We may order Indian food, Kevin and I have a beloved Indian restaurant (Masala Dosa) that we’ve been going to for years. Their Chicken Korma and Vindaloo are favorites.
Now I’m thinking that Egg Nog cocktail sounds like a wonderful treat… Might enjoy one tonight.

    Hi all!

    I’m in a celebratory mood, wearing M
Naga from Vero Profumo from a teeny decant that’s almost dry. I wanted to make sure I enjoyed it as much as I remember, since the EdPs are becoming available again, as well as Naja. Yes, it is even more lovely than I remember; this time I won’t miss out on a bottle. Thank you to the splitter who hosted this split all those years ago.

Stay safe everyone and happy new year!

Goodbye 2020, nobody is going to miss you!
Me & my parents are preparing for a little New Year’s Eve party. After 7 PM people are not allowed to leave their homes tonight but we’ll be seeing our neighbors who live upstairs, so we don’t even need coats and can go in home flip-flops.

I’m ending this year with Parfum d’Empire Eau de Gloire but I plan to change to some Prada for the evening.

Stay well & healthy and here’s to a fast return to normality in 2021!

I grew up going to Notre Dame games, back in the 70s when tickets were affordable. They’ve had a great year but I think the Crimson Tide is going to crush them….hopefully not by too wide a margin so that it will be fun to watch.

    FREEBIE ALERT!

On the seventh day of Christmas, I’m offering for free
    7 Keiko Mecheris

This is seven 1 ml dabber vials of the following Keiko Mecheri scents:

    Camellia
    Grenats
    Loukhoum
    Mihimé
    Mogador
    Scarlett
    Umé

I acquired these in a swap, so I am not the first owner, but each of them has plenty left for testing purposes.

    Also, still unclaimed from Tuesday:

    5 ml of Spring

This is a 5 ml decant of Dasein Spring purchased from Olfactif. It is in a very nice opaque metallic twist-up spray vial. Because it is opaque (and I have no idea how to take it apart) I cannot see the actual level of the perfume inside, but it should contain most of the original 5 ml, as I have only used a few sprays. It came without any label on it to indicate the fragrance, so I have placed a label on it. I do not know how well the label will stick.

That is a great set and I would take it if I hadn’t already tried them all!

But wanted to add that I do think this is how everybody should do their freebies for now — I think we won’t have a freebiemeet until April at least.

I had been hoping for a freebiemeet, but when I looked at how much stuff I had, I figured I could just do it now as the 12 Days of Christmas. Besides, I noticed that a lot of the items I had just fit in naturally with the numbers from 1 to 12–7 samples from one house, 11 from another, a sample set with 6, one with 8, a 5 ml decant, etc. I don’t really need any freebies myself, so as long as I can give away my own stuff, I’m fine.

I’m taking the day off work to hang with the family. Among my Christmas loot I acquired some serious perfume porn: Aphorisms of a Perfumer by Dominique Ropion that I believe was a gwp with a perfume; CHANEL-a massive coffee table book that my younger son got me; and Editions de Parfums Frederic Malle The First Twenty Years with a forward by Jean-Claude Ellena, which is an even more massive coffee table book. These three tomes are spread across my lap at the moment, looking very enticing.

In other scent lit news, my older son gave me a strange, wistful, mystery book-The Scent Keeper. It is not exactly about perfume, but perfume people will enjoy it for the thought the author gives to describing scent.

Still haven’t summoned the courage to test the other Bogue samples I ordered after my Douleur disaster, so am thinking of wearing Chypre Shot today .Yep! That’ll be the one. 🌞🌞🌞

      Happy Hogmanay everyone!

SotD is Rahele! It never disappoints! And I like that bottle, elegant but also functional.

I tried Anubis yesterday evening from a sample, and I could still detect it this morning. That smoky drydown is gorgeous. 😻
It reminded me a little bit of Tuscan Leather. TL is superduper smooth though (my husband wears it). Anubis is a bit rough around the edges and smokier…but thats also good.
    Because why not both? 😄
I mean, i enjoy slick polished Hollywood movies but I also love art house.

In the end I think I was more entertained by Anubis than by Bengale rouge (i wore that one a few days ago) But Bengale rouge is an easier wear.

Oh If Papillon made a travel spray set, like all fragrances in a 10 ml size, id buy it immediately,
But I realise its not feasible or profitable for a small company to produce them…

    Well,
I hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable new years eve! 🥂🍾🎉

    See you in 2021! 😘

I wore Anubis the other day after not wearing it for a long time and was shocked by how smoky it is, I hadn’t remembered that. It is really good though, and I like it much better than Tuscan Leather on me. Happy new year!

Yup i really love the smokiness. And.its so dry. I can almost see/inhale the fumes. 😄
But its does not feel ‘heavy’ or suffocating. Its so nicely balanced.
Hmmpf… Yeah…i may need a bottle of this stuff 🙂

Tuscan leather smells better on my husband than on me. (Whereas he thinks I wear Ombre Leather better).

L’Artisan Tea for Two to stay cozy. Sad to hear about Dawn Wells – Gilligan’s Island was a regular watch at our house while growing up. I think almost everyone from my generation can sing at least part of that theme song–it was hard to avoid.

Like SmokeyToes above, I am super sore today. HIIT workout then upper body weights plus core, I hit it all. And based on my soreness, I don’t do it often enough! Owie. Today I’m off work so I’ll go for a long walk. Then later a Zoom with former neighbors, all good friends, to ring in the new year. Can’t wait to see people in person again.

LTSG, It’s been a big focus for me this year both for sanity and health. But it was much harder when my 3 sons were young. Just try to get it in when you can–even if it’s 10 minutes a couple of times a day! It is my firm belief that exercise is the best and most underappreciated preventive medicine we have.

No perfume yet today. I am thinking of Bois d’Armenie. Maybe it will help purify the air and get rid of all the bad stuff from 2020. For tomorrow, I’m thinking something understated and restrained. In this part of the country, it is traditional to eat black-eyed peas and greens on New Year’s Day for good luck. One explanation is that these foods are thought to represent money (the peas representing coins and the greens representing paper money), but another is that they are humble foods. The wealthy do not eat peas and greens, rather it is the poor and the working folk who do. The idea being to start the year eating humble foods to show your humility and frugality. I’m trying to decide what perfume would fit. Maybe Violet Ambrosia?

Violet Ambrosia is a rather non-typical violet scent. It feels warm rather than cool or powdery. I love violet scents as well, but I have had trouble with a couple of them causing me to cough or giving me a headache (Le Dix). Violet Ambrosia doesn’t cause me any trouble though. I got the perfume pomander, but I think there is a FB in my future.

I am really enjoying my decant of Bois d’Armenie, and would like a FB, but apparently it is discontinued? I am hoping maybe someone will have some they are willing to swap.

You just reminded me – I will prepare 12 blueberries, in lieu of grapes although I can still run out and get some. It’s a Spanish tradition to eat 12 grapes at the stroke of midnight for 12 months of good luck. For what it’s worth, I had 12 grapes last year too so may not be a bad idea to try a new fruit 😂

    Wearing Guerlain AA Ginger Piccante.
Off from work until Monday, Yay! Taking it easy at home and getting ready to see my family once again tonight to welcome the New Year. We are ordering Lebanese food for dinner. We will continue the tradition of eating 12 grapes at midnight with a glass of champagne and also wearing yellow underwear for luck. Tomorrow we will have lentil soup for prosperity. Not that we believe on these things, but following very old traditions in our family is always fun!.
Tonight I will wear Guerlain Encense Mythique D’Orient.

I have a bottle, and a back up bottle. I was very impressed with it. It smells so good on me, kind of like how Opium back in the day made people stop me and ask what I was wearing (and I mean waaaaay back in the day, when it was a serious perfume).

I also like Calligraphy Rose, and the original Calligraphy, but the Saffron was hands down my favorite.

It was only Calligraphy Rose for me. I think my skin amplifies dry notes so the maxed out sweetness of CR worked fine!

Showered then moisturized with Shalimar body lotion, followed by numerous prays from the EdP sample I scored. Thanks to LtSG, I out a toe in the Shalimar water earlier this year with the Eau de Cologne. And probably wore it more than any other single scent through the summer and into fall. So, seems appropriate to wear the big sister to end the year.

Need to brave the grocery store. The husband wants me to make my tortilla chicken casserole for tonight and to enjoy while watching football tomorrow.

Safe and happy New Year to everyone!

Was in a car accident on Xmas Eve. I fractured a vertebrae and have to wear a cervical collar for 6-8 weeks and have some bruising on the right side of my face. No one else in the car was injured. Very lucky the injuries were relatively minimal. It was very scary…I have never been in a car accident before. Feeling sad and mad with moments of acceptance and gratitude. I haven’t worn perfume in a week.

    So thankful for this community.🕊♥️

I’ve been in a multi car accident before, but luckily, we didn’t really have injuries. Still, I avoided that particular street/route for a good while after.

A few years ago we were in an accident, side-swiped by a car sliding towards us on an icy road as he crossed over into our lane. He ended up knocking us into the ditch; we rolled over going down the hill. I ended up getting a homeopathic supplement for the bruising and aconite for my shocked nerves.

Commando so far, because I’ve been working through a headache these past few days. I keep a migraine diary (now there’s some exciting reading!!) and have been scribbling away, but honestly, maybe it is my pillow after all. I think I’ll brave a scent in a little bit….
My husband has been making a New Years quiz for the past 8 years (borne out of one very loooong New years eve get together with friends where midnight just didn’t seem to be arriving). These past two years, we’ve hosted a big party, too – but that’s not possible this year.
Instead, we are trying the quiz via Zoom, and doing it in the afternoon so that other time zone friends can join. I’m excited, but hope my friends will not be like my students and mingle in their breakout rooms! :) The kids/teens are super excited, as their team are the reigning champions from last year.

In my experience, most adults have no idea how to use the breakout rooms, so you’re probably good! I can’t tell you how many calls I’ve been on where the organizer has planned breakouts and they always fail. I’ve never successfully entered a breakout room yet. :D

Well, on the large company meetings where they try to put us into breakouts, the rooms never materialized. I’m pretty sure that if I went into Zoom myself to do a call, I’d be able to find the breakouts, but I’ve never used them myself. With family we talk on FaceTime, mostly. Zoom’s limited at work, too — they use it for large company meetings but only over the strenuous objections of IT, and they’ve locked it down for us otherwise due to security concerns, so we use Skype, which doesn’t have breakout rooms that I know of.

Beyond the technical aspects, I think a lot of people don’t plan breakouts appropriately… you need someone in each group who knows how/what to facilitate, otherwise you’re sitting there saying to each other, “So what did they want us to do exactly?”

Not wearing anything just yet-ill spray on something festive a little later. I was supposed to go to a friend’s party, but I have tooth problems instead, so ill nurse myself back to health with this bottle of cliquot! Am I the only one who prefers the demi sec to brut?

I’m wearing Our Satin Mood, in the hope that I will raise my mood to match it.
I have adopted a new spraying location, since I was scrubbing and sanitizing everything off my wrists and lower arm. I now find the corner of my neck and shoulder is the best place to let the scents waft up. I can always turn and lower my head for a sniff.

    Let lost aquaintances be remembered.
And let’s all sing the Linda Rondstadt classic to 2020:
Feeling Better Now That You’re Through
Feeling Better Now I’m Over You
    You’re No Good
    You’re No Good
    2020, You’re No Good.

Last official day of work yesterday, office is closed today for NYE, and that’s a wrap on my career – we had champagne last night to celebrate. 🍾 🥂 Mr. G even unearthed our wedding flutes for the occasion. 🥲

Hard to decide on one for the theme tomorrow. After the $#!&-show that was this year spilling into next, good luck for 2021 seems like a lot of pressure to put on even my favorite perfumes. Maybe I’ll roll the dice on an untested sample.

Wearing Mugler Alien Musc Mystérieux and enjoyed a long cuddle with one of cats this morning (she REALLY needed belly rubs, apparently!)

Stay vigilant, fragranced friends, until 2020 has gasped its last breath! I’m hearing all sorts of close calls and accidents happening recently, this year is not giving up without trying its worst.

I had a tempered glass dinner plate explode on Monday evening – thankfully it only ruined only my dinner and made for 10 minutes’ cleanup as I had *just* put it down and stepped away from it for 30 seconds. Whew! I was very sad to scrap that eggplant and bok choy stir-fry but it could have been way worse if the plate had been in my hands or on my lap.

Same here! I narrowly avoided a car accident the other day by turning into a snow bank instead. It was either that or the car in front of me. Slipped down the stairs, broke a wine glass, almost pulled the TV off the wall…all over a week. Disaster is just waiting for a chance, it seems.

So far today, I have done some washing and taken out all the trash I could gather up. In many traditions, it seems that you are supposed to clean your house of New Year’s Eve to get rid of all the remnants and residue of the old year, and you are NOT supposed to clean your house or take anything out of it on New Year’s Day, as by doing so you are throwing away your luck for the year. Not that I am a superstitious person, but I figure it can’t hurt to try it. For me, it feels like a psychological boost as well–get rid of the trash, get the place cleaned up and in order, and get ready for a fresh start. The dishes are washed, the laundry is done, the pantry, fridge, and freezer are well stocked, and I’m ready for a new year.

“We made it. We all survived.”- Inuyasha to Naraku, Inuyasha: The Final Act

SOTD: Cap Neroli- in cold weather, this scent is sparkling, fresh wih a rich soapy/powdery drydown.

    1) 2020 keeps on keeping on: My friends’ marriage is at an end, it seems. TBH, there were serious issues in the marriage, and had they separated last year, it would have not been a surprise. But here we are. I will hosting one of my friends for the forseeable future- so the office will be turned back into a bedroom.

    2) So have been doing the New Year’s clean a couple of days earlier than usual. Am so glad I did the updates to the house when I did. Will be doing the garden clean up later on this afternoon (we have had heavy rains and some wind this past couple of days) and will burn some (homegrown!) sage.

    3) RIP Pierre Cardin, Dawn Wells and all of our fellow citizens this year.

Hello everyone and Good Riddance to 2020. Can’t come soon enough! I’m hanging out at home with the kitties looking for something fun to watch on TV. No excitement here, which is fine by me. I chose Havana Vanille as the SOTD just because, it’s kind of a pleasant upbeat scent that I associate with more lively times. We’ve had rain rain rain and thunderstorms but the weather guy says it’ll all clear up by sunset. Best wishes to everyone for 2021!

I wanted to thank everyone for their condolences yesterday. I showed your messages to my husband, he was very touched. This community is a blessing.

Yesterday afternoon we drove out to the coast. I haven’t been so far from home in ages! Felt so great. We picked up some delicious soups from Duarte’s Tavern in Pescadero… yum.

We have a zoom get-together planned with some friends for late afternoon, then will have the evening to ourselves. The menu will include halibut, Duarte’s artichoke soup, and champagne. We probably won’t stay up til midnight though.

SOTE will be Armani Bois d’Encens, my favorite incense perfume.

Quick post, will come back later and read comments. Planning a very quiet New Year’s Eve, but that’s normal for me, pandemic or no.

SOTD is Rogue Derviche, a pleasant amber acquired during a 20% off sale.

Will be ringing in the New Year in Guerlain Liu, this is becoming a tradition to wear an aldehydic perfume on the last day of the year. Enjoy the celebrations perfume friends and stay safe, we’re in lockdown in London also known as tier 4, what’s new?(sigh)

JHaG Musc Invisible over Lush’s once upon a time lotion. They play well together.
Today was a work day and it really doesn’t feel like New Year’s Eve, although I literally can’t remember the last time we did something special for it. I’ll probably be asleep long before midnight. We’ve got taco dip and cranberry ginger ale in the fridge, lol. Yep, we’ve got a pretty exciting night lined up. All things considered, I will spend it with 3 of my favorite people in the whole wide world, and we are all healthy. So there is that.
    I’m hoping 2021 is better for EVERYone!🥂

Happy New Year to everyone that I missed above. Half day of work in DVF Diane, which my violet loving heart enjoyed. Got off and took a walk over icy streets, then stopped at the store for some samosas to have as NYE “treaty-bits.” Having a quiet night otherwise. Our senior kitty is facing some tests and needs our love and attention until Monday when I hope we get some answers. I am looking forward to what will strike me as my New Year’s Day scent – no traditions about that have yet emerged. But I did treat myself to a jar of Jubilation 25 body cream from Frag’net. I hope it will be richly scented like Guerlain or Mugler creams are so I will probably start with that.

Wearing Hiris layered with C&E Iris lotion. I will top up with something else later.

We had to make a trip out by car, an unusual situation these days. Wouldn’t you know it, dead battery! Why not? Thankfully it was just a boost needed to get out to get business taken care of. Yup, 2020 just can go away any time!

Just settling in now with a blanket on my couch.

SOTD = Estee Lauder Azuree, from my old-style bottle. Noticing some similarities with Wrappings, but it doesn’t smell the same at all. It’s really, really good in cool, wet weather.
