Monday scent of the day 12/21

Posted by Robin on 21 December 2020 209 Comments

Happy Monday and happy Winter Solstice — watch for the Christmas star. Birthdays: Rebecca West, Frank Zappa, Samuel L Jackson. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm staying warm in Serge Lutens Rousse.

Reminder: 12/25 is Christmas. We will not have a community project, but there will be a holiday open thread (it will probably start on the 23rd or 24th).

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2021, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Exactly. All these dark winter days made me want to wear a red lipstick and spring floral perfumes.

Many thanks to Robin & other NSTers who recommended Numi’s Aged Earl Grey tea as a substitute for one of my giftee’s preferred unavailable earl greys. She likes it!
Ordered a new Chanel lipstain/gloss, and got to request samples of La Pausa and Cuir de Russie, so am looking forward to trying those.

Wearing my favorite sample of the pack, Le Pavillon d’Or by Dusita. It is really good but toooo expensive. I’m curious about the other perfumes, might sample some more in the future.

I keep seeing so many mentions of Le Lion here that I am going to have to try this one out. There is no way I need a FB though, not even 75 mL and certainly not 200. If I really like it, maybe I can snag a decant of it somehow?

Enough people are buying FBs on here, there may be someone interested in providing decants, plus I’m sure they’ll start being offered on the site that shall not be named.

I’ve noticed many of the decanting sites don’t stock Chanel, not sure why. Chanel may be more aggressively litigious? I did recently order some small decant from a site called perfUUm, haven’t gotten them yet. Maybe someone else has ordered from them and can report?

I have a whole bunch of stuff that I am gathering together for freebies/swaps, so I am hoping someone with a FB might be interested in swapping a decant for one of my unloved bottles.

Need to power through my day!

In other first world news, my two advent calendars are still going. I have skipped a few days here and there and had to double up on some of the chocolate (the tea can wait) but I will absolutely try to be timely this week. I consider this a victory since my last advent calendar lasted me only 1 day and then I got bored ?.

The M. Micallef advent calendar from 2016 which seemed like forever ago and for perfumista cred, I should not be bored with one perfume a day. I think I was just too busy to appreciate the set! I still have it so maybe I’ll just think of them as “vintage”.

Is it possible to have book frustrations?
Venting so feel free to skip..
Early December Mr L wanted an out of print book that is expensive so I ordered online through book only website I have used in the past and I also ordered myself a book at the same time. Its shipped under the same shipping number and arrived yesterday. I was surprised at the packaging since his book is quit expensive, alas, I open it and there was only my book. I contact the bookseller and they are not able to provide an explanation to where the book is located. So I have nothing for Mr L for the holidays. Rats.

Hi all, my SOTD is Shiseido’s Feminite du Bois, perfect holiday scent for me. Espresso and breakfast consumed, shoes on, and I’m headed out for a walk in a few minutes. I walked a total of 35 miles last week. Feeling rather accomplished (and pleasantly surprised).
No makeup save for sunscreen, I did a chemical peel yesterday, two layers each of Jessners and TCA 13%, so keeping it minimal until I’ve finished peeling. 🙂
Organizing the books I’ve read on Good Reads – turns out I hadn’t read as many books as initially thought and some need to be marked as ‘read’. I’m off December 24th through January 4th, which will give me plenty of time to clean up my account and work through my list.

Winter Solstice greetings to all in the northern hemisphere, and Summer Solstice greetings to the many of you in the southern hemisphere! The solstices and equinoxes are my favorite events to mark. I pulled the trigger (finally!) on two small Soivohle bottles last night, Cuir Beurre and the very lovely Paracelsus, so I will celebrate the solstice in dabs from the sample vial of one of those.

Woke up in Coco Mademoiselle Intense this morning and wore it all day yesterday. Post shower is no 5 bath products. Nobody really says anything about the perfume I wear but my mom complimented me on it. I might layer on some vintage extrait too. Going to finish up the stocking stuffers today. Have a strict budget of $20.

It’s funny….I never really wear No. 5 (I do like L’Eau and Eau Premiere) but I love the bath products! I don’t buy them for myself but I do buy them for my aunt and I always use them when I stay with her! You smell great.

It’s a flanker done right like Eau Premiere was. Noticed a faint but noticeable vanilla note. The citrus seems different but a little subdued. Will be blogging about it tonight.

No scent yet, hmm, where is my bottle of Ginger Piccante? Must find.

I think I’m about done with making Christmas cookies. And my stand mixer (which is dying) (again) (repaired it once before) held out just long enough. New stand mixer is ordered but who knows when it will show up. DH insisted that the new mixer be RED. Who knew he had a preference??? So RED it is.

We got a good view of the ‘Christmas star’ last night, could even see 4 of Saturn’s moons. Looking forward to seeing it again tonight.

I miiight have gifted myself some perfume for Xmas this year 🙂

I have a red stand mixer too, would have preferred something else, but you rarely get a choice at Costco.

So inquiring minds want to know, what might be under the tree for you this year? 🙂

Honestly, nothing fancy (at least so far). I think I am feeling modest or nostalgic or something. My holiday purchases are a couple of small bottles from Lush (Fresh As and Ginger), Estee Lauder Tuscany per Donna, and Ralph Lauren Lauren. Yeah I know the latter two are shadows of their former selves but, well, nostalgia.

Rose de Petra, from a small decant someone gifted me. Nice, and I like the Kardamom nite, but not a must have.
Did our holiday grocery shopping in a big delicatessen supermarket, so we also bought a loup de mer for dinner today. Fresh fish is hard to find here, so we will enjoy it with a good white wine, fresh baguette and a bit of spinach.

Goodness, 2020 and the holidays have me all out of whack with commenting. I thunked my Bohemian Spice decant on Friday. Sad but enjoyed it while it lasted! Wore Shalimar both weekend days just because I should wear it more. Working from home today and haven’t even showered yet. Will probably wear something from a decant since I’m attempting to use them up.

I made cinnamon roll popcorn, peanut butter fudge, homemade Chex mix on Saturday. Then yesterday I made chocolate chip cookies (my hub’s fav), chewy chocolate espresso cookies, and bizcochitos (a traditional New Mexican cookie) yesterday. And yes, there are only two of us in the house haha. So I packaged some up and dropped them off on porches of some friends/coworkers.

    Happy Solstice!

    1) Am in Laura Mercier Creme Brulee in generous sprays- perfect for after a early morning spin & flow workout!

    2) Installed my Christmas gift to myself- the induction range and microwave/convection oven. I got both from IKEA. Guys, now I am cooking with magnetic waves! *cue Star Trek theme*
I am VERY pleased: you get boiling water in 1 minute ; cooking oil to temp in about 45 secs! I did need to buy new pots and pans (my old pots failed the magnet test) but very worth it! I made fried shrimp- screwing up the first batch (the oil got way too hot) and then the second batch was perfect after fiddling with the controls.

The microwave/convection oven makes frozen dinners like lasagna and frozen pizza taste really good and really fast to prepare. The induction range included a convection oven as well, and I made roasted Brussels sprouts and fingerling potatoes- all really fast and crisp outside, tender inside.

The difference in range capabilities is astounding. I am very grateful.

If your appliances are serving you well, leave them be! I know people who bought MCM homes and still have the original kitchen appliances- and they work superbly!

What I got in my house was basically the most basic and cheapest models for this house, which was used as a rental by the previous owners. It was time to switch out.

Last working day of the year!! Day-by-day, a lot of the year has dragged, but overall it has vanished very quickly. We have a long summer close-down, so I’m not back at work until 11 January. I think this will be the longest break I’ve ever taken at Christmas.
Celebrating the day with Majda Bekkali’s Mon Nom est Rouge, it’s gingery and sort of Christmassy, but also not a wintery scent.

In Cartier’s Oud & Rose, courtesy of Pixel, amped up very slightly with a spritz of A la rose–more to drain the dregs in my fb than that the Oud & Rose needs any amping.

In backyard bird news, we have an errant chickadee. Out back, we have two large, well-stock bird feeders that mostly make hundreds of passerine very happy–and occasionally contribute to their death by cat. We also have a hummingbird feeder set up on the side of the house, right outside the kitchen window. It too gets quite a lot of traffic, and makes washing dishes fun. Well. A single chickadee has now decided that the hummingbird feeder is his/hers, and spends its time roosting on the top, or pecking at the yellow plastic flowers at its base. The hummingbirds buzz it, dive bomb it, and click madly–but this chickadee is completely unperturbed. It can’t be getting a food from the feeder, so I think it must simply be enjoying annoying the hummingbirds. This has been going on for about a week, and the hummingbirds are getting more and more aggressive. Our younger cat has now taken note of the bird battles, and I am a little worried that it will end in tears for one or another of our feathered friends.

Omg standing up to aggressive hummingbirds is quite a bold move, they’re battle-ready little flying nuggets! Brave chickadee! It must be quite the scene out there. Hope they manage to steer clear of the cats.

I want to catch a picture of the chickadee with a hummingbird hovering. It looks so improbable to see the chickadee on the hummingbird feeder, and a hummingbird trying to shoo him/her. I have yet to have my phone out and ready in time to get the snap.

Our chickadees are very pretty–shiny brown with black caps. Here’s a pic from a website: https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Chestnut-backed_Chickadee/id#

Ha! From time to time we get acorn woodpeckers on our hummingbird feeder. And yes, they’re chugging the sugar water, and of course paying zero attention to the buzzing hummers.

Do you also have a chamomile aversion? A calming, potentially sedating tea would be perfect for me – especially before bed but I just detest it. And I got a sample of Lush’s Dream Cream which soaks into the skin beautifully but it has chamomile in and I can’t take the scent. I use it sometimes for mosquito bites which it magically soothes but I couldn’t use it all over. Most people don’t love chamomile but I thought I was alone in the strength of my aversion!

It’s not an aversion, it’s that it makes me feel weird. It’s hard to explain but if I drink a cup of chamomile tea I don’t feel relaxed, I just feel off, and not in a good way.

Kusmi sent me a sample of their detox tea, and that also makes me feel really weird — it has guarana and mate, and I don’t know which one causes the feeling, so I now avoid both ingredients.

Hello to all my NST friends! Today is the first day of my Winter Break. We are out for two weeks. It was nice not having to wake up with an alarm clock today. I just finished my Christmas shopping last week, and one place I shopped was the Estee Lauder counter. They always give me a lot of extra goodies. One of those treats was a mini spray bottle of Beautiful Belle. I did gift a few people with FB of this, so this is my SOTD. I’ve said it once, and I’ll say it again, EL really does make some good fragrances that don’t break the bank. Hope everyone has a great week!

Two kittens are on the premises now…feeling a bit overwhelmed but they are both sweet, love bugs. I had kind of forgotten all the daily joys that come with living with a cat or dog. My 7 year old said this morning…”it’s a pleasure having cats in the house but they kept us up all night.” We slept with them in her room to limit them to her room and bathroom. So indeed…we were up all night. 😉

Wearing Shalimar Souffle de Lumière from a perfume math free tester from FragranceNet and it’s quite nice for an unseasonably warm day…lots of bergamot and vanilla.

Also going to call and get an appointment with a chiropractor for my upper back. I have never been to one. Never had acupuncture either. ehaeheh since I am naming things not done. They appear to offer both services so maybe now is the time.

I’ve been to chiropractors a few times when I’ve had an urgent pain situation. Both times very helpful.

That said, one of them did a hard pitch for some long-term program to the tune of $5k, financing conveniently available. Yeah, uhh, no.

No acupuncture for me yet, it’s something I’ve wanted to try and has been helpful for friends. On my post-COVID list.

Yes, I am very hopeful as most people who go seem to have very good results.

Skies here are socked in under a grey blanket of clouds, so no star- or planet-gazing for me tonight. (mope) ??⭐?

Other than that, getting things done on a Monday!

SOTD = Wrappings EdP. ‘Tis the season for it… ?

Bottega Veneta. Today is the first official day of my break so I’m cooking chorizo and chickpea soup after taking all out moving boxes to the recycling depot and buying a fancy sourdough loaf at the bakery downtown. It’s been a great day so far.

SotD Zoologist Sloth to celebrate a week of doing just that!

Yesterday’s khachapuri turned out great and today’s task was pizza with sun-dried tomato pesto, sauteed spinach, herbed ricotta and mozzarella.

Ask me if we have anything *besides* carbs in the house and the answer will be awkward silence, lol!

          ha ha, go Team Sloth!

Today I did one thing on my to do list. Then I did another thing. That one wasn’t on my list, so I wrote it down and checked it off.

It was a satisfactory Monday. 😉

SotD = Ambre Narguile + zum mist Frankincense & Myrrh

Spicy! ? Smells like winter treats here. I’m wafting AN from my wrists, all the better for making the perfumista salute, and am enjoying frequent quick sniffs. A few spritzes of zum mist are floating around the house, so nice!

I feel especially festive today because AN comes from a bottle a lovely perfumista shared with me. My heart is full. ❤️

Now if I could just get someone at my house to bake cookies, I’d be in heaven. ??

thank you, cazaubon 😀 Ambre Narguile reminds of spice cookies so I’m covered for both perfume and baked treats today. I feel very lucky.

Maybe the daughter who is slow-poking her way into helping with the Christmas decors can bake the cookies?

Yikes. I don’t miss my days in a retail environment. There were years with no day off from Halloween to Christmas. I don’t miss working Christmas Eve.

Hope your work week improves and minimal holiday shopping drama!
