Friday scent of the day 9/18

Posted by Robin on 18 September 2020 315 Comments

Happy Soft Spot Friday! Our community project for today: wear a perfume that you may or may not wear often, and may or may not really love, but that remains dear to you for some other reason. Thanks go to Kanuka for the suggestion!

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I am in Comptoir Sud Pacifique Aqua Motu, which I prize past its worth because it reminds me of Southern California beaches. It is making me especially wistful this morning because it is unusually chilly in my house for a mid-September day.

Reminder: TBA, again! I am sorry I am so behind lately; I will try to get the Friday projects updated this weekend.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try (but frequently fail) to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

    Hi all!

Sadly up earlier than normal today. Had to go to a doctor’s appointment. I’m in Chanel No 18 which works for my appointment as well as the pole. My mother gave me this bottle for my birthday last December and I treasure every spray. Of course I had a heavy hand in suggesting this perfume as my gift. ?

    Stay safe all!

I’m lacing up my Big Boots and heading out into the still-smoldering woods today to do some ecological assessment work. It’ll be a day of 4WD trucks, hard hats, chainsaws, firefighter moustaches, *and* the Big Boots, so I’m countering the manliness of it all in Galop — I’m reasonably certain it’s what Helen was wearing on that fateful evening with Paris. Doesn’t qualify for the CP, though, since it’s one I love with open-hearted abandon.

Your job sounds interesting/meaningful and hands-on – I’m probably romanticizing it big time (also don’t really know what you do), but I’m weirdly envious! I hope you have a good, safe day!

I’m with you on that. Although I’m sure with all of the necessary gear and current environment, it won’t be easy going or comfortable, there’s something very purposeful about the day’s work that sounds quite gratifying.

I have soft spot for that one too. My (then) teenaged son found a huge bottle in a thrift shop while he was on holiday one time, and had the good sense to buy it for me although he didn’t know if I would like it. I don’t love it; it’s too sweet for me really, but I treasure it all the same.

Not doing the CP, but I’m happy today in my first experience of Kyoto, from a decant I received this week. Next up is Avignon. I have to buy decants of the others in the incense series.

    For my Friday Community Project
Cartier II L’Heure Convoitée. It is a great love of mine. Bought at the Cartier in Prague on Jin and my first holiday together. It’s arctic powderiness blended so well with the cold snowy winter adventure. Every time I spritz it takes me back to the mad joyful crazy new love and discovering how easily and happily we travel together.

Oh I’m glad it was beautiful! Such a bummer you didn’t have the best weather, maybe next time.? Lake Michigan really is something. When we lived on the northshore of Milwaukee we could walk over to the lake which I sometimes miss, it does mess with the weather though, so I don’t miss that. There was a saying in Milwaukee “cooler by the lake” which is great in the heat of summer but not in spring or fall.

There’s such a huge difference between the Green Bay side of the Peninsula from the Lake Michigan side. Both are beautiful. Cave Point, on the Lake, was stunning…but water was much more wild.

Friday thank goodness. Long week. I think we will see a bit of sun today the air is clearing of smoke, bit my eyes are gritty and swollen.

Interviewing for two new job possibilities. I didn’t get furloughed but am deeply unhappy with being underutilized. Time is linear and I reached a point a few years back where no one gets to waste my time. Now if I choose to while away a day, that’s on me.

Post shower maybe some Chergui. Always a soft spot.

Henri Bendel Pink Grapefruit & Vetiver from a time when this store had a good fragrance department. And great cashmere sweaters. It’s long discontinued, and I got this bottle in Los Angeles on a trip to the Breeder’s Cup not long after getting married. Wow. That makes it almost 23 years old.

It’s a really good summer scent, so a little late in the season. Crisp grapefruit…maybe with a bit of sprinkled sugar. I don’t get a lot of vetiver..it just adds some depth..

Many many years ago I bought my white (for my mother), mini (for me) wedding dress at Henri Bendel in Chicago. It was such a beautiful store. We had a tiny wedding, but my mother insisted on 1) a priest; 2) a white dress; 3) flowers; and 4) a cake. Since we were doing the entire thing for her, I complied. Ha.

Good morning Y’all, and I couldn’t be happier that it’s FriYAY FriYAY FriYAY! It’s been a long week! Tomorrow my oldest and I are going into Atlanta to go perfume sniffin’, so looking forward to that….She has been saving her money for a bottle of Jo Malone Poppy and Barley. (It smells really great on her!)

My soft spot perfume is Marc Jacobs Daisy Dream. It’s not my ultimate favorite, but it’s good and I’m wearing it today. My daughter bought it for my Valentines gift back in 2014 or 2015? She was very young and used a gift card of her own, and figured out how to order online. For that reason it’s always out in my room and it makes me smile. The last time I wore it before today was 2017! Yikes…I need to wear it more often for sure….

My soft spot perfume is LouLou. I think I wore it when I got married in 1987, and then for a few years after, before I switched to Casmir. LouLou was the perfume that made me realize about flankers, because my mother, knowing that I wore LouLou, bought me LouLou Blue for Christmas, not realizing it wasn’t the same scent nor that I had moved on to Casmir. One spray this morning is plenty. It’s still pretty but the style is not me anymore. I like big perfumes but not “heavy” ones these days.
Woke up to drizzle. Going for a walk later and might not come back until I can’t walk any more and have to take a cab home. I need to banish this cabin fever!

I’ve not been to the beach once this summer. So very sad and maybe we’ll have a heat wave (I know, long shot) in the coming weeks AND I’ll be in the mood to trek out to Coney Is. which is my closest beach.
    Don’t think it’s happening but it’s a lovely thought.

SOTD: Marni EDP; too bad they discontinued this one as it’s such a great spice-laced rose.. good for fall!

The beach is beautiful in the winter! I love just sitting in the car, bundled up with the windows slightly cracked. The waves can be heard and the salt air sniffed. Occassionally, heat up the car, if I want to stay longer ?, but I live really close to the beach.
And I count my Blessings. Just started taking my child/dog? to the beach the day after Labor day. She’ll wear her little coat, too.

Sorry you haven’t been to the beach. I’ve been to the beach parking lot, because they don’t allow dogs. And I am that person who brings there dog everywhere.

      Maybe, try in the winter?

SOTD = A Lab On Fire What We Do In Paris is Secret

I remember shortening the name to WWDIPIS and thinking that it sounded dirty. Anyway, I’m on CP! Every time I see it, I remember that it was one of my first purchases from LuckyScent, I loved the packaging and loved (and still do) the perfume. I also feel equal parts guilty because I don’t wear it often enough.

Unfortunately, customer service at Tech companies tend to be nameless and previous efforts to chase down a name ended up with no result. Totally off project today, wearing Rihanna Rebelle from my blind buy package. Goes on with a very chemical vibe, calms down in a few minutes to a sweet cocoa/coffee blend, and then quickly starts getting very faint. It’s kind of like a Demeter cologne in that regard. But, because it comes in a big bottle for a little price, I guess one could reapply with abandon all day.

Groggy today as we had thunderbolts and lightning (very very frightening) at 3 a.m., and had some trouble getting back to sleep after it finally died down. My CP ‘fume is Prada L’Eau Ambree, acquired through a blind swap a while back with a lovely NSTer, so the soft spot is that the scent reminds me of NST itself. I don’t think of myself as a “good” sleeper. I have decades of off-and-on insomnia. However, I can be a deep sleeper at times.

In college, I waited tables in one of the national parks, sleeping with a roommate in terrible little room above guest services. I woke up one morning with no doorknob. According to my roommate, during the night, the lock broke and she got locked out of the room. She banged and rattled the door, but I didn’t let her in, and she assumed I was somewhere else. She got maintenance out there and they removed the doorknob. And there I was, inside, fast asleep. Never heard any of it! She laughed at me for days.

Autumn Walk (or Autumn Woods?) by The Burren Perfumery, which is a lovely perfumery/cafe in the Burren in Co. Clare. Situated in the most glorious setting, too!
I loved this scent in store but this was a bit before my current perfume habit and I found it pricey for 35 euro or so (I know…). I ended up buying it online later (they ship to the US). Anyway, while the blackberry leaves, hedgerow, rainy day vibe is lovely, it would work much better for me in a candle.
    Happy Friday!

Yes, I got an email last night saying the Patchouli one launched I think….yay! Thanks for letting me know. Was planning on getting the 100 ml but I wonder if it due to being natural the shelf life won’t be great. But then I wonder if it might go out of production due to vanilla being unavailable, etc. So much to contemplate this Saturday morning! :) Perfume is my favorite contemplation.

SOTM is leftover Orris Noir from a reapplication last night. I’m working in my pjs, since I don’t have any meetings today. Eventually, I will clean up and find a new scent for the day!

    Friday!

    1) It’s raining, and the air quality is now moderate, going back to good tomorrow. I cannot emphasize how exponentially easier it is to breathe.

    2) SOTD: Chanel Eau Premiere- I have a soft spot for this fragrance, as I bought it to reward myself for a job and buying a house. It’s the smell of success for me, of bouncing back from BS and doing the thing anyway.

I chose L’temp d’une Fete for comfort and strength today, on my son’s birthday anniversary.
I visited Arthur’s grave and laid sunflowers, which are the flower I associate with him. He would have been 20 today, he was 9 when he died, the age my daughter was yesterday..
It was a beautiful and golden day, L’temp d’une Fete was perfect.
I also collected some conkers for him, from the huge ancient horse chestnut in the little graveyard.
Later after I picked up the kids from school we toasted him with milkshakes at the new cafe in the village, and I shared the rest of the conkers I’d collected with them.

Super busy day! I am sooooo glad is Friday! Counting the
the hours for the day to be over.

Wearing Dana Tabu for the cp. It is a very dear perfume for me, because it has been my mother’s signature scent all her life. I don’t wear it often, but the two violin shaped bottles that I have, I confiscated from her years ago. She has at least 10-15 bottles, minis included, that everybody used to give her for her birthdays, Christmas, mother’s days, etc. All of them are now vintage. Her first bottle was a Valentine’s day present from my father 40 something years ago. The rest is history!

    Happy Friday! ?

I’m doing the CP in Hanae Mori, the butterfly bottle, which I must have had at least 12-15 years. I rarely wear it now but it’s special because it’s one of the first perfumes I bought after bravely venturing into the fancy sections of Neiman-Marcus and coping with sales ladies. I’m not sure why I liked this so much but I suppose its appeal is that it’s easy to lie and the bottle is very pretty. I remember the SA told me she liked it a lot too and often wore it as a bedtime scent as it’s so relaxing. That idea was very surprising to me, that someone might wear perfume to bed! Little did I know!

I’m cheating a bit as my soft spot is Nivea , the thick cream version that comes in a flat round tin. It’s not quite as I remember it but as a kid I used to think it was fabulous, as much for the packaging as the smell. It seemed like something very exotic ( made in Germany, on the other side of the world) and luxurious. I still like the smell. Reminds me of a time when anything to do with “beauty” was new and special.

Bright sunshine but very cool temps today – it’s definitely fall and a perfect day for my choice for the cp, vintage Houbigant Chantilly. I have it in numerous forms and today I’m wearing the edt from the beautiful sunburst splash bottle. I’m amazed at the strength of just a few drops dabbled, not even sprayed, compared to many of today’s much lighter scents. I love it through all its stages, bright opening, floral heart, and woodsy/mossy drydown (my favorite part).

I’ve been wearing Houbigant Chantilly since I was a young teen and it wasn’t yet vintage! It’s literally been with me through most of my major life events. One of my favorite photos is of me in my bridal gown and veil on my wedding day choosing Chantilly from the perfume tray my mom had given me as a birthday gift that year. She’s been gone for many years but I still have that very same tray, and I think of her often when I choose my SOTD from my monthly selection of fragrances arrayed there.

Hoping that all the natural disasters so prevalent this week swiftly diminish and all of you stay safe and well this weekend. And, go White Sox! First team to clinch a playoff berth!

Another gorgeous day here, weather-wise. But this one definitely feels like fall and not late summer.

Some good news here: someone came early this afternoon to patch the ceiling where a hole was cut during the master bath repair. The guy was quick and polite. He also mentioned that today was the first part of the repair. For anyone who hasn’t ever had to patch drywall, usually when someone does it right, they put a piece of drywall in to match the size of the hole, then it’s “mudded” with what’s called a scratch coat of compound. Mesh tape is also used at this point. After things dry for a couple of days, the first repair is sanded down, and a second (or finish) coat of compound is added.

So repairs aren’t quite finished, but the end is in sight!

Something cool: there’s an itty bitty green preying mantis hanging out in my sage planter today. It’s only about an inch from beak to tail, and I think it’s cute! The drywall guy spotted it as he was leaving.

SOTD = Deep Red by Hugo Boss. It’s a cuddly, sweet citrus-vanilla-with sandalwood perfume that is not sophisticated by any means. But I always enjoy it when I wear it. And this is my third bottle.

Oh, I love Deep Red and I loved your Something Cool story – Tom, the last of our butterflies to be born (we keep milkweed cuttings in containers to help the Monarch butterfly population and watch them hatch into caterpillars, then form chrysalises, then finally emerge in their final form.) I was as excited as if I’d given birth myself! (And my grandkids get to name the butterflies, hence ‘Tom.’)

Wow! Third bottle! When you’re stuck, you’re stuck good. Was this a signature scent at one point?

On a ceiling repair, we needed work done to a portion of the basement ceiling and it took several days of curing / drying with an industrial-sized contraption (it was big but small enough to be able to brought in through normal size doors) before it was painted.

Nope, not a signature. By the time I found Deep Red, I had a small perfume wardrobe. But it was definitely before I fell down the perfume rabbit hole!

Also, I have always tried to get the 30mL bottles whenever I can. I grumble a bit about 50mLs, and scowl if the only option is 100mLs.

We had a front come through, so the humidity has dropped considerably and the breeze is almost cool. I’ll take what I can get!

Spent a couple of hours cleaning out the spare room today. Lots more hours needed. The floors need to be dust mopped, but I didn’t get to it. Maybe tomorrow.

I started out in Elixir des Merveilles for the walk this morning (plink), and am now cp compliant in vintage Coco. My mom drained one of the black rectangular bottles that takes the refills. When I found it, I was simultaneously happy that she’d enjoyed it so much, but a little sad that she didn’t get more of it. She might not have known it was refillable. I will never know. ?

A very cool fall day, went for a walk with a friend and had a good chat. I was planning on 4160 Tuesdays Over the Chocolate Shop but the bottle was inaccessible so I ended up in Maria Candida Gentile Noir Tropical.

Givenchy Dahlia Noir. No special reason for choosing it today, just curiosity. Very pretty and springlike for the temp-droppin’ weather here as well.

    SotD = Nicolai Patchouli Intense

I keep this sample to remind me that it’s worth trying anything once (or more). I don’t usually get along well with patchouli, but this one has lavender and rose and cinnamon. So I do enjoy smelling it, though I don’t often want to wear it.

Patchouli Intense is a beauty, and it has that Nicolai feeling that I like. Maybe it’s a French perfume thing? There’s a mineral-ic, bracing feel to the base of some Nicolai scents, also some of the Rochas scents I’ve tried.

Wishing everyone a happy weekend! :)

Lavender is usually a tricky note for me, but I’ve learned to never say never about it… I have 2 bottles of perfume that prominently feature lavender. Funny how that works.

Patchouli Intense sounds like it would be up my alley!

Patchouli Intense is unusual, it doesn’t smell like other patchouli-rose scents. I hope you will seek it out and give it a try.

I love love love lavender, especially dried lavender buds and straight up essential oil, though I must agree that it can be iffy in perfume.

I wish I had several soft spot perfumes. My mom wore things like Red Door, Gloria Vanderbilt, Oscar de la Renta and such when I was young. At some point in the late 90s she got some Allure and has been wearing it ever since. Alas, I have none of that.

For myself, I have a few but for today I’m in Baccarat Rouge 540 because that’s what I got married in.

    Happy Friday, everyone!

Yay for Oscar! I adore it.

Your perfume choice makes me smile, it’s such a wonderful thing to have a scent memory like that.

I have a soft spot for ambergris, meaning I always find it interesting, usually in a good way. Rouge 540 has been on my perpetual sample list, so I just this moment put a sample in my cart. Gonna place an order this weeeeekend. ;)

Ariana Grande REM mostly because it just arrived today but that is one of my favorite songs off that album so I’ll count it.

I sprayed the air once, then once on each arm before going to sit next to my boyfriend on the couch and he immediately commented it was a lot! I was shocked because I can’t really smell it unless I lift my arm but I was like a foot away from him. I knew my sense of smell was bad but I didn’t think it was *this* bad! ? At least REM smells nice, I’ll just do 1 next time.

This happens at our place a lot. I can’t go near Jin when I originally spritz, the top notes seem to attack him. It’s a 10 minute waiting period between spritz and sit.

One spritz of Sticky Cake on my left wrist, one spritz of Nomad Tea on my right. When I bring my wrists together I smell EXACTLY like perfume version of my favorite indulgence… My sweet mint tea and this wonderful cake dough I could just even eat raw with the tip of my finger… ummmm I am in heaven!! If I had to go to a deserted island forever and could bring only ONE perfume I would… Ask for letting me take two, please. Sticky Cake and Nomad Tea of course:) I don’t want to sound boring but I love them so much they are worth their weight in gold to me. Seriously.

I sprayed this but did not wear it as it can be a bit much – Covet by Sarah Jessica Parker. I bought this when it first came out and my dog, Harry, did not appreciate it. He chewed the little brown flower cap right up. Now that he’s gone, seeing the bottle always makes me think of him.
