Friday scent of the day 7/17

Posted by Robin on 17 July 2020 368 Comments

It's Nouveau Niche Friday! (Also, ? Emoji Day, World Day for International Justice, David Hasselhoff's birthday). Our community project for today (an updated version of a poll from 2015): wear a perfume from a new (2015+) niche brand.

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I do not have many choices, but you don't have to twist my arm to get me to wear Arielle Shoshana Saturday.

Reminder: on 7/24, wear a perfume by Zoologist, Xerjoff, Worth Paris or Yosh if you have one. Partial credit for any other small-ish brand that starts with the letters W, X, Y or Z.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Happy Friday! My scent of the day, is a Niche Brand.
    Parfums de Marly Delina
It is sparkling and joyful. Unfortunately I am not feeling well. But I still must wear a scent to make me feel happy.

At the tippy top is Paris Deauville. I was gifted the Shampoo and body wash for my birthday but middle one stole it. I loved how it made my hair smell so I am certain I would enjoy the EDT.

Oh, I was wondering about that–wasn’t the first scent just called “Arielle Shoshana?” That was my memory, and then I was surprised to see it called “Saturday.” Thought maybe I was having perfumista dementia. (You know, when we get so old in our perfumistahood that we slowly lose the present memories and regress into our old scent memories!)

Bengale Rouge again today. I’m so smitten!

Home closing was yesterday, money is in the bank today and I’m so relieved to be done! I know owning a home is the American dream that is sadly out of reach for many these days, but for me it was just a huge burden. Good bye money pit, is what I say!

    Have a great weekend, all!

I’m sorry to hear that. That must have been a very difficult process to go through.

Dignity and self- worth are always internal structures in my experience. I’m glad you realized how important and valuable you are, home or no home.

Strangely, I’ve always had an irrational fear of being homeless. I had a very secure childhood, so I’m not sure why I had this issue. However, now that I’m officially “homeless,” it feels like I confronted and won against an unseen enemy.

I’m here until the first week in October, unless my contract get cancelled before then. After that I was planning on heading west to do some fall camping and hiking, but this is very tentative due the precarious position this country is in right now. I may just head west and start another contract ASAP because the fall and winter here in the US are going to be horrendous. The best part of all this (if there can be a positive) is that I don’t feel pushed to make any decision based monetary need. The worst part is that now, US citizens will be getting inaccurate information from the government regarding this virus, so really, we’re working blind. ?

Well done! As I listen to some drips coming in from a leak in my chimney, during what appears to be a tremendously bad thunderstorm, I can definitely feel you when you refer to a home as a “money pit.” Freedom would be nice! But I don’t think I could manage to live a life with all of my cats either in an RV or a rented apartment, so I stay here.
(Actually, I do like my home, but it’s just so much trouble!)

Hope your leak gets sorted sooner rather than later! I think your kitties love that porch packed with plants too much to leave it. ?

I have seen people that travel with cats and even birds. These folks are masters of creating “kitty condos” and aviaries outside their rig. Some are very imaginative..!

Giggle. Years ago, when I got out of a longterm, unhealthy relationship, I was able to finally do the work to properly take care of myself. Started working out, eating better, and although I didn’t have any particular weightloss goal in mind, I *did* become a smaller size over the next handful of years. Whenever folks would ask me about it, I would tell them that the first 200lbs (ie. my former partner) were the easiest to lose. ?

I really like Ciel d’Opale. It is such a sunlit fragrance. Too bad Ann Gérard had to give up her perfume. I don’t even know whether she is still in business with her jewellery.

Those are the two I own as well. I do have samples of Rose Cut and Cuir de Nacre as well. But I like Perles and Ciel much more.
I loved some of the earrings she did. I would never spend that much on jewellery myself but her stuff was very nice, understated and elegant.

Good to hear! One day I’ll break down and get a sample set before they all disappear.

I do remember seeing a few pieces in an article right when her perfume line came out. I got the distinct impression she is a less-is-more designer

In Parle Moi de Parfum Orris Tattoo for the CP.

I am on my way to the office. First time since March. I need to work on some detailed graphics and it is almost impossible for me to do it in the small laptop screen. I need my 2 big screen monitors for it. Let’s see how it feels to be back just for a couple of hours. I hope the long commute is safe. I am glad is already Friday.

Have a safe day, everyone! ?

I like the idea of a work week that begins and ends on Friday! Hope your project is a success – may the “orris” be with you. Still, I was very happy to be back in the office, though we are very limited in our in-person meetings and banned from break room camaraderie : ( .

I was very grateful to my employer that they made getting our second monitors home with us a priority when we were sent to wfh. It took a couple weeks to get them, though, and working off a laptop screen was soooo hard!

After 4 months those big monitors looked HUGE to me. So wonderful! It is ridiculous how we eventually got used to a small laptop screen. The same with the speed of the computer. I get annoyed at how slow the laptop is, especially when working with large files, which happens to me very, often. Patience!

It went pretty well. I decided to commute late in the morning and before rush hour this
afternoon. Trains were not crowded, which was a relief. At the office only a coworker and me on our floor. There is lots of work going on, like plexiglass barriers and sanitizer dispensers being installed at every single cubicle. Also special areas on each floor and at the entrance of the building to check peoples’ temperature daily. It looks like more construction work is going to be done inside. No idea what it will be, but there are lots of huge, heavy boxes all over the place. We are supposed to start slowly returning to work after Labor day. We are not allowed to be in the building now, unless we have management authorization for urgent matters. Everything is going to look and be surreal when we are back. Protocols are going to be very tough. It is going to be hard to get used to so many restrictions, but health comes first.

Jasmin Antique from Rogue. Was bad & blind bought when the Etsy store ran its July 4 discount. Turned out to be a good decision–if you love jasmine, this is a no-brainer.
Also got a sample of Tuberose & Moss, which is lovely & reminds me of something from decades ago that I can’t put my finger on.

The CP motivated me to find and wear my sample of Plumeria de Orris by Areej Le Dore. Heading into hour four with it and very pleased at the presence it maintains! I have the little sample from Luckyscent – IDK – 3mls? I always feel confused about how much to use – I need a serving suggestion on the labels! I can’t ever get the vials open without getting it on my fingers so I start with dabbing that and a couple swips with the stem. So far it is a tropical flower and creamy orris cloud of happiness!

Commando until after my eye exam this afternoon. Looks like we will have record breaking heat this weekend in the Finger Lakes; I am glad that I managed a walk this morning. Could be the last one for several days (unless I decide to start walking at 3:30 a.m, when I seem always to be awake — but as safe as my neighborhood is, it’s not an appealing idea).

Not sure what I’ll reach for when back from eye exam — maybe a reprise of yesterday’s Ninfeo Mio, since I have nothing that fits the CP.

    Happy Friday, all.

My cats love Fage yogurt??! Does that count? They won’t eat any other brand. Their original owners, their ‘Auntie’ and ’Grandma’,’ are very Greek and fed them that from the time they were little kittens. I continued the practice so they wouldn’t forget their ‘heritage’ (even tho they’re really Maine Coon cats).??

The wait is over – my little bottle of Carthusia 1681 arrived yesterday, and it’s a new love. Robin’s review here on NST is pretty much spot-on (as usual), although my nose appears to interpret the incense note as lavender-y (or maybe it has both notes). Robin probably put this one in her “woods” box, but on me it feels more like a somewhat unusual chypre. So I fail the CP completely, but I don’t mind. 🙂

It’s hard, though, to find a non-sweet Riesling. I have found a few in some local wine stores, and am always pleased to have one, but they tend to be rather expensive. Oddly enough, I got turned on to them while visiting wineries in South Australia. They make some fantastic dry Rieslings there. Again, they’re extremely hard to find here, even though we have some excellent wine stores.

Following a Deva’s lead in Bengale Rouge, since she recommended it for warm weather. It was either that or Cap Neroli, and I was in the mood for something warmer and less herbal.

Was able to have our first restaurant meal in 4 months last night. We went over to our Italian place, and I had my usual linguine with meatballs. Glorious weather. Got home and had a white peach for dessert while on a 2.5 hour Zoom visit with friends in CA. The husband had a raspberry panne cotta from our local French bakery. Nice evening.

SOTD will be Sunday, whenever I wake up enough to get dressed and give myself a spritz. +1 CP pts.

I canned 20 quarts of berries yesterday, and they didn’t seal. I’m guessing I didn’t process them with enough of a rolling boil, so back into the pot they go.

I can the raspberries with raspberry wine, and the blackberries (marionberries, actually) with blackberry wine, which gives the juice a wonderful flavor. Unfortunately, the raspberry wine EXPLODED on me, and I ended up with half of the bottle sprayed all over my kitchen. It looked like a scene from Dexter.

They really are luscious! I got the recipe from a local blogger, who suggested using wine instead of juice, or worse (and often suggested by extension services), WATER! I don’t drink, but I don’t mind cooking with alcohol. The wine lends a wonderful richness to the filling.

I was literally showered in wine–had it all over my hair, my tshirt, and of course, all over the kitchen. Cannot fathom why there was so much pressure built up in that bottle! It was like shaking up a bottle of sparkling wine before letting loose the cork!

Yes. Kinda still is. I cleaned up the cabinets, fridge, walls, doorway down to the basement, floor, etc. Then my husband came home and commented on “all the wine everywhere,” and he did it himself, too. Pretty sure the floor is STILL sticky with it! We’ll have to mop again today, I think.

Oh no. Awful. It reminds me of the time I meant to warm up maple syrup in the microwave in one of those plastic jugs. I meant to run it for 10 seconds but ran it for a full minute. It boiled out all over everything and as I’m sure you can imagine, THAT was a true sticky mess.

And thank you, they are! Something I can preserve and will actually eat! (As opposed to jams and jellies, which I hardly ever consume, and can sit on a shelf for YEARS!)

I’m wearing the brand new in 2020 St. Clair Scents perfume Pharaoh’s Passion. It’s lovely. I don’t feel a strong need to purchase a bottle. It’s got a lot of spices listed in its ingredients but I’m mainly getting a very gentle natural rose. We’ve needed rain but this thunderstorm is scary! I don’t have much going on except for my Zoom discussion meeting this afternoon on Camus’s The Plague. I look forward to that.

Playing the CP in one my newly fave perfumes, Chronic by 19-69. I enjoy everything about this line. Their aesthetic (the bottles are very satisfying, with a splash of colored glass at their base creating the perception that the juice is tinted), the font on the labels is satisfyingly very 1960s, and the caps fit on well), to their English-language names, to their fragrances–which are not cheap, but are also not ridiculously expensive. Chronic is a buzzy green, herbally scent, that my husband (who is politely supportive of my addiction) absolutely loves.

Yes, some of our surrounding districts are doing that. I understand everyone has to gauge their own comfort level. I just feel bad for my daughter. We live 4 blocks from the high school and she was so looking forward to no longer riding the bus and just walking with her friends. When my other daughter leaves for college she essentially becomes an only child and now she won’t even get to see her friends everyday.☹️ Sorry for the long, rambling response, lol.

I think everyone should be the same – all online or all in person. I don’t see that it works well to do some of each. Not to mention that those at home might start feeling like second class citizens. I’m trying to stay positive, but all of this is pretty discouraging.

I agree uniformity, at least withint a metro area, would be best. Our district is floating the idea of letting each school decide for themselves. Seems like the worst of both options, since siblings might have different offerings–not sure how families are supposed to plan if that’s the situation.

Oh no! Sorry your daughter is in pain. Hope it’s better tomorrow.

I’m finding a week’s holiday goes way too fast. I can be very good at doing nothing although earlier in the week we got rid of some no longer working, accumulated electronic stuff and gained some space back.

I got out my samples of indie and niche houses mostly from the lovely Ajda freebie. I’m pretty sure it’s older than 2015 but I picked Alexis Body Made Luminous, I’ve read nothing about it, too tired this evening, but it’s a luscious dark chocolate perfume to my nose, quite happy with it.

Honestly, it’s great. I love it. It strongly reminds me of the Herbal Essences of the 90s. Bright, cheerful, cheap.
No weird musk or syrup or funky smell.

It cooled off here substantially and is cloudy so I went with Francesca Bianchi Lost in Heaven for the CP. So glad I remembered that this is a brand that fits the CP. It is one that I think is well matched to my perfume tastes with more perfume wins than fails for me. The last couple days I’ve worn two perfumes by Füm that I adore, Jurassic Flower and Nerola.

Swap offer: I posted this on Jessica’s Vivacious review but didn’t get any takers there. Would anyone like to swap with me for 5ml (less 6 sprays) Hiram Green Vivacious? It’s from the split that hajusuuri did last month. It’s a nice perfume, but it just doesn’t do it for me. Let me know here, and then we can email about details.

Oh, and update on my car… still in talks with insurance after contacting a local shop for a couple quotes. Got one quote for doing minimal repairs to get my car in legal driving condition again (new driver side mirror and door handles) and another for a full insurance quality repair. Based on amount of minimal repairs estimate, I should be able to come to a solution where I keep driving this car. I really don’t want to deal with getting a new car, so I’m glad things will work out in my favor after all.

    SotD = Sunday!

Joining the Arielle Shoshana love train today 😀 Thank you again to the lovely NSTer who shared their bottle with me.

I am surprised! First because the notes are so unusual, and even more that I enjoy this scent. I’m not often fond of sweet milky smells and tastes (I’ve never liked to drink milk), but it all works so well here. The spicy cinnamon and bitter matcha are wonderful.

Pink’s A Million Dreams is playing on my speaker, a random choice by the AI overlords at Amazon music. 😉 It’s a sweet reminder to live life with eyes looking up and out into the future.

Fantastic fragrant Friday wishes to you, my perfume pals! 😀

It’s quite nice. I get mostly heliotrope to start but the mate and patchouli show up and are there for the dry down. What I like about his Woman line where they all have 3 notes in the name is they actually do smell like the notes 😉 ehaehh b/c many perfumes as you know will be named something but leave you wondering where is the rose? vanilla? lemon?etc. b/c the title is misleading and/or marketing perhaps. I wore Minty Man yesterday and it’s wonderful if you like mate. That one is mint, mate and citrus mostly with some sweetness and light florals in the background…completely unisex and I will probably get a FB of it. I also quite like the Peach Blossom, Violet and Vanilla one. What’s great is the 5 ml sprays are $9.50 so you can sample and spray without breaking the bank…and we all should be spraying more to help get us through these hard times Spray early, spray often. ?

Hey everyone, I hope things are going well. I did the CP today! Heretic Dirty Neroli. Very long lasting for a natural. Has quite a large dash of cumin, so avoid if that’s a problem note.
Otherwise I wore Dune Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday was Chanel No. 19, Thurs I wore Anubis; some are pretty heavy stuff for summer but I liked it.

Ugh! Swamplandia sounds awful. I’m in semi-desert typically but the last few days have been THAT!

Yesterday you asked about the kitty cat; short story is she lives 2 doors down and is normally an indoor cat. I think she was left out too long on the back deck and escaped but couldn’t find her way back home. We posted an ad online and had a ‘hit’ at suppertime. Mommy and kitty were reunited shortly thereafter. Glad it ended very happily and so quickly.

SOTD is JD Duality. Fragrantica describes JD as a new post-modern brand from Jeffrey Dame, niche designer and founder of Dame Perfumery, with its first scent released in 2018, so I believe this qualifies for today’s cp. First time wearing it, and although it’s not one I’d choose to wear on a blisteringly hot day, I love it! With more notes than I could possibly post, it’s creamy and warm with a little bit of spice yet surprisingly not too heavy. I look forward to wearing it again in more ‘normal’ temps.

Trying hard not to focus on the pandemic that keeps getting worse and this upcoming weekend’s temps in the upper 90’s and, instead, focus on the highlights of this week: a visit from my grandkids and son (hadn’t seen them all month), my son and DIL’s 21st wedding anniversary today, three fantastic live-streams this week from my three favorite local musicians, and three wonderful virtual yoga classes. Great stuff to be thankful for!

Wishing all a wonderful weekend ahead. Stay strong, stay safe, stay hopeful!

Hiya twin! I’m considering the 10mL of Saturday, even though it is a rollerball. 100mLs of anything is just a freaking ginormous amount of perfume.

I know! Maybe I’ll do a split! I can’t take much over 30 or 50 ml these days! But I really do enjoy it because I don’t have anything else like it!
