Friday scent of the day 7/10

Posted by Robin on 10 July 2020 298 Comments

Happy Piña Colada Day! (Also, Nikola Tesla Day and more birthdays: Mavis Staples,* Arlo Guthrie, Alice Munro, Arthur Ashe.) Our community project for today: wear a perfume with pineapple, coconut, rum, or any combination of the three.

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I'm wearing what was already on my desk: L'Artisan Parfumeur Ananas Fizz over Estee Lauder Bronze Goddess body cream.

Reminder: on 7/17, we're doing Nouveau Niche, updated...wear a perfume from a new (2015+) niche brand. (A repeat from 2015.)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

*A fun read: Mavis Staples: ‘I often think what would have happened if I’d married Dylan’ in The Guardian, from 2016. From last year: In 'We Get By,' Mavis Staples Keeps Singing For 'Change' at NPR.

    Hello hello
    First one!

An eBay impulse buy that largely fits the SOTD prompt : Boho Green – Goa. It’s a lovely mix of coconut, vanilla and tiare flower on me. I don’t like pineapple so I don’t mind to miss it! Very nice and sweet would be lovely in the summer.

(I’ve never heard of this company but they are French so maybe easier to get in France and Canada.)

So overcast this week but we’ve had a nice morning in the park.

Hope you are all well and have a lovely weekend.

I’m wearing Gallagher Villainess Vanilla. It is supposed to feature top notes of pineapple and cucumber. When one of my staff came into my office, she said I smelled like baby powder. Not what I was going for. Oh well, I’ve already determined that this weekend is for wearing Demeter Tomato and Beetroot. Certainly not baby powderish.

Baby powder. . . LOL! My hubby, the wonderful Mr. Spicebomb, has only a few descriptors for my fragrances. “Vanilla,” “spicy,” and “like baby powder” being near the top of the list! I think when it doesn’t fit the list, he just goes with “oh, you smell good!”

Hedonist by Viktoria Minya. This is luscious honeyed flowers with a bit of rum on me.

My bottle arrived yesterday (so fancy!), the second perfume I bought after selling some of my collection online. As with Lyric, I pulled out my old sample and fell in love. Years ago, I was in the process of learning about perfume and determined to find the best honey fragrance. Undecided between Hedonist, Botrytis, and Yvresse, I ended up with none. I’m done overthinking, on to enjoying.

I am inspired by your selling. My brother is a video game collector and has been selling on Ebay this year and things have been selling like hotcakes no doubt helped by Covid.

I need to sell a few old bottles myself this year…I had a goal at the beginning of the year to part w/ 6 bottles. I swapped away 3 during the Swapmeet so come up w/ a new goal for this year now that we are in the 2nd half of it.

My 7 year old said of the blue the other day…”The year is halfway done…” Brought tears to my eyes w/ everything going on…what a year it is has been. :) :(

And I am completely agree about overthinking…I overthink most things and sometimes perfume too. ;) Enjoy your new finds!

Thank you! I was surprised how quick and easy it was to sell my perfumes and make a good amount of money. And it was interesting to see my own reaction to my collection. I instantly knew which ones I would never sell, even if I don’t wear them much anymore.

So strange and sad to think that the year is halfway over. This is one for the history books, for sure, and yet personally everything is on pause.

They are quite similar…kind makes me wonder about the development of both by the house as part of that collection. I love pouring over Fragrantica reviews and several folks talked about the similarities and I agree.

1932 is more floral than 31 RC and doesn’t have the patchouli but considerable overlap…makes me ponder parting w/ 1932.

I agree with that assessment, but I hadn’t really thought about the similarity. There is something in 1932 that I didn’t love on me. And 31 RC only works on certain days for me, but I still think it’s incredible for those days!

I’m wearing Cococabana for coconut (quelle surprise) and Le Rivage des Syrtes for pineapple, so I think I’m good for today’s CP.
Although very different they seem to get along very nicely, perhaps because they were created by the same perfumer.

Tea is Thé vert Earl Grey Primeur by DF.

I hesitated a long time between Rivage and Un cœur en Mai when I allowed myself to buy one MDCI. But cœur won in the end.
Cococabana is interesting. The drydown is a bit rich but it is an unusual fragrance, a mix of tuberose and coconut and quite bitter on top.

I’m testing Heeley Note de Yuzu.
It’s pleasant, I especially like the refreshing bitter citrus in the opening but after some time it becomes quite flat. I won’t go beyond the sample.

I haven’t tried that one, but I have found many yuzu scents struggle the way orange scents do to carry over into the heart notes. It always makes me sad, since that zing is usually what draws me in to a scent in the first place!

Bronze Goddess (2011 version), which I spritzed over a Hawaiian plumeria floral mister. I need to use the latter more often…it’s fading a bit. And so refreshing in the summer.

Need to consider if I have errands to run before the tropical storm arrives. We are in for nasty weather this afternoon apparently. Good day to do lots of laundry.

I get mostly white florals, and something sweet. Sits pretty close to the skin. I’ve never tried the oil, so can’t really compare.
I don’t think it smells like terracotta though or Bronze Goddess. It’s much softer.

SOTD will be Keiko Mecheri Un Jour d’Ete – Fragrantica includes coconut as a note (although I don’t really smell it, maybe it’s the underlying creaminess?), but Keiko’s site doesn’t.

But I’m currently sampling Teo Cabanel Barkhane thanks to a super generous NST swapper and I LOVE it. I’ve only tried this and Cafe Cabanel from this house, but now looking forward to trying others.

Welcome back Deva! It’s nice to see you again. I read your post late yesterday, so I think I’m up to speed now.

        Thanks for the welcome back!

Yes, Luckyscent will not be getting any more of my money.

        Abbreviated version:
No movement for 7 days from tracking number I was provided when I placed order. Contacted LS, who stated sometimes tracking is manual and not entered into system and to wait a few more days. Another week went by, I contacted them again and was told they’d open an investigation. I asked if they could send me replacement order? No, they had to wait for the investigation to be completed first. Another week went by and I heard nothing and so contacted them for the THIRD time. Three weeks have gone by at this point. They emailed me back and said, oh yes we already sent you a replacement, you’ll have it any day. I asked for tracking number, and was told they would email me with that info as he was unable to access it right then. Got another email that basically said Oops! We didn’t send a replacement and now we have no stock. Additionally, one scent has been discontinued and was no longer available. So sorry!

A complete joke when it comes to even a modicum of customer service. They did not reach out even ONCE in the 4 weeks this was going on. I rarely say never, but I am now saying NEVER AGAIN!

I placed an order with Indigo Perfumery and had my order in my mailbox in 3 DAYS! Guess who’ll be getting my perfume money from now on? ?

Honestly, it’s not that things got lost that made me vow never. It was their unwillingness to make things right. Plus, I just don’t think they know WHAT they’re doing because they told me Bengale Rouge was out of stock (still showing in their website as available) and that it had been discontinued by the perfumer…which is not true as far as I know.

Out of curiosity I looked up reactions to this one on Fragrantica—interesting that a number of folks hate it. They get urine and cheap rose. Nope. Still a beauty to me. Oh well. I have regular zoom and facetime meetings, and before EVERY ONE I give myself 10 minutes to fuss with the placement of my iPad or laptop for the best possible lighting, angles, etc. I’m not particularly vain, I think (I hope?!) but I can’t stand being distracted by the sight of deep shadows over half my face, or an angle up my nostrils!

You smell perfect and I bet you looked perfect and did perfectly well. 99% of the time, I use the same device for work and the only thing I need to be concerned about is lighting since I face the window. I finally got blackout curtains and they made a huge difference! My face used to be bathed in blinding light and now, i just shift the curtain depending upon the lighting conditions. I sometimes increase or lower the intensity of my laptop screen (which I don’t use for Zoom) but that light tends to be on the bluish side. For the more important calls, I practice before (like Marjorie Rose above) although only for a minute or two.

Hope the job interview went well! My teenager recently had a zoom interview for a hs thing and a parent needed to be present – my husband was laughing because all the boys kept fussing with their hair! I have terrible lighting in my designated zoom space and look terrible no matter what, so I’ve pretty much stopped trying very hard.

This happened to me! You may want to reset your “appearance” setting. Also, light coming from behind you or strong light facing you is not good. I gave a window that gets a lot of natural light during the day and I ended up getting blackout curtains and adjusting the sides to let in enough light .

Hi friends, yesterday morning my fiance went for a 50-mile bike ride (he does a >35mi bike ride 1-2x a week) and ran into a bee forehead-first at 38mph. He looked all funny and puffy last night, and we had a good laugh and went to sleep. This morning he looks like an alien and his phone’s facial recognition software doesn’t recognize him anymore (frankly I wouldn’t either if all I saw were his face). He talked to the doctor, who doesn’t sound terribly concerned, but gosh, this has been quite the morning. Anyway, I’m in CDG Kyoto to calm my nerves.

On the upside, thank you all for your nighttime coughing recommendations! Amyitis, I took your asthma advice and gave myself a good puff of my inhaler at bedtime, and it worked really, really well. No coughing until like 4am, and even then, not so much that I didn’t manage to fall back asleep until 7 :)

Happy Friday, folks. Stay away from bees.

A few years back, I would wake up randomly looking like someone had punched me in the mouth–swolen lips, cheek, sometimes inside my mouth, too. Turns out I had a kind of angioedema (just means swelling of the soft tissues). There’s lots types of them, caused by various reasons, some more serious than others. In my case, it’s likely autoimmune, since I have a few other conditions already swirling around my system. I take regular medication now to prevent it from happening, since it can narrow my airway and throat, which, you know, seems bad. I hope it proves to be nothing serious for your boyfriend, Koyel! Sounds like it was “just” his face, so that’s at least less dangerous (although I bet it was uncomfortable–poor thing!).

I’ve had that happen and it would happen randomly for a period of time. I finally realised that I’m allergic to aspirin. It was getting worse each time and I even had to do some ER visits and get an EpiPen. And Koyel, I would suggest getting Benadryl just to have on hand in case of future emergencies like this bee sting.

Wow, that’s so scary! Yeah, seems like “just” his face (looks terrifying, feels uncomfortable but not painful to him), and the doctor said that there was nothing to worry about unless he has trouble breathing. Luckily, we have my inhaler if we need to keep things open on the way to the hospital! I’m glad you have it under control.

Yeah but difficulty with breathing is life-threatening! Don’t ignore or under-estimate it! Sorry for all the exclamation points (maybe you were being satirical), but when I went into the ER on the several visits I needed with my angiodema (see above), I went to the top of the triage line, behind only one other category, the heart attack victims. They take it VERY seriously and I’m glad they did. I had to get injections to help.

I totally agree it is dangerous – all my BF had was big red welts, but no breathing difficulties. Had he had trouble breathing, the pharmacist would have sent us to the nearest hospital. Fortunately all he needed was Benadryl.

Bee stings are the worst! One summer, both my daughter and I scooped them up with our sandals and I had to go to the zoo a couple of days after that – lots of miserable limping around. Glad you’re better oh no about the fiancé! Hope he’s better. I’m not a doctor but will mention that if he is using topical medication that is similar to the OTC drug, he needs to be careful as the effects from the topical medication and the one taken orally may cause over medication.

Another thought which is more far fetched since it was his face that puffed up and nowhere else — could the bee sting reaction have been exacerbated by eating the berries the day before?

I’m not in a particularly perfumey mood today but am coconutty in Mountain Ocean Skin Trip lotion, which a college roommate turned me on to back in the day. To me it’s the scent of a warm day on the Cental Coast with the prospect of a trip to the beach — where I grew up, the beach was only about 8 minutes away so I was there more days than not.

Another very slow start for me this morning. I was going to be out the door, picking berries by now. Still nursing my coffee, instead. . .

I “attended” the school board meeting last night until after 9pm, so it took a while for me to wind down, and I went to bed late. They were presenting their plans for reopening in September–which they hadn’t yet shared or coordinated with the union. Seems to me that if they want to reopen, maybe they should be sure they’re not breaching contracts? Likely, I will not be able to return to school in the fall. My health history is long and rocky. I have very conflicted feelings about it.

It would be lovely if they approached it in a collaborative way. That is not the history we have, unfortunately, but I am willing to be hopeful that worldwide pandemics would warrant a reconsideration of approach!

    Rum, anyone?

Sweet as can be and I love it❣️

I’ve mentioned the Bruno Fazzolari ScentBridge Sample Program all week because I think it’s a good deal. We now have two sets of matched pairs! Can we make it three, four or five sets? Yes, but only if more people participate. Essentially, for $9, which includes shipping, you get a customizable 3-sample set. A 2nd set with the same exact perfumes will be sent to another person for an additional $9. You need to have 2 people to create the bridge, and thus, total spend of $18 split between 2 people. I am offering to match people based on their sample wish list. If interested, check out the details on my post from last week’s Lazy Weekend Poll around the 12:23PM Eastern mark. The link is below. The only change is that I’ve extended the deadline to Sunday, July 12, to be included in the matching. The ScentBridge offer is only good for July, hence the deadline to allow pairs to work out logistics.

In other news, it is swamplandia here in NJ. We have Tropical Storm Fay working its way around these here parts. I went outside this morning to bring in my one piece of deck furniture – a plastic resin Adirondack chair (I do have a matching table but it has never been outside yet) and whoa…not good – it was like breathing in hot breath. We have all sorts of lightning and thunder and rain and the wind is starting to whip up!

Oh true. It is faux terra-cotta plastic and soil. I had a decorative windmilly thing that I removed and threw away a few weeks ago. So if the wind is strong enough it will not be the first item flying around here. I may end up dumping it so I don’t have to deal with it next time!

In an effort to be CP compliant (and test some new to me perfumes of which I have managed to acquire samples), I am wearing Idole de Lubin (EDP) on my right arm and Frapin 1270 on the other.
Idole is supposed to have a rum note but I cannot detect that at all. I can smell frankincense and something woody and ambery and I like it but not enough for a FB (this is only my first wearing so I should probably not rule that out).
Frapin 1270 started off with a pineapple note which faded quickly (much to my relief, as I am not a fan) and then turned to a nice, boozy, vanillic fruit concoction. Also not bad.
A nice NSTer sent me recently a sample of Frapin 1697 and I really liked that one (also a rum/vanilla combo), but it was a limited edition perfume and is no longer available. Still, I’m glad I had a chance to smell it. Thank you!
    Wishing everyone a wonderful weekend!

    SotD = Terracotta Le Parfum

because it’s the only thing in my perfume cupboard I can think of with coconut, though I can’t smell much coconut at all,

and because I love wearing Terracotta and remembering all the excitement I felt when I first tried it,

and because I’m a Guerlain fan through and through! It’s amazing how often Guerlain scents are at least pleasantly agreeable or knock my socks off wonderful at best.

And it’s fun to think how many beautiful perfumes I have experienced because of all of you! :D :D :D :D :D You are a fantast group of perfumistas. Hope you enjoy your fragrant Friday.

Terracotta is an odd perfume. I get sweet white flowers (I guess tiare flower and jasmine) with a little citrus up top, nothing indolic at all. After a few hours all that is left is a sheer vanilla plus a bit of very gentle clean musk. Funny thing is when I wear Terracotta around some people they think it’s super strong, other people can hardly smell it at all. I think it’s a musk anosmia thing. ;)

Going to my aunt’s house for the weekend. Pulled out my bottle of Courtesan from my closet today. Something is up with the bottle. I take off the cap and perfume dribbled all down the side of it and I noticed condensation around the top, especially around the base of the spray mechanism. I have no idea what that all means. I just don’t want to lose the whole bottle. Courtesan isn’t so easily found in the US, I can find the lotion on Amazon but not the perfume itself. Do have a backup though.

I’m in Demeter Dark chocolate for now, after yoga I’ll sprits some Bronze Goddess, it’s got coconut so I think it counts. And I need something comfy right now. Also really enjoying a $5 Pistachio Macaron candle from Walmart, it’s got a really nice subtle sweet any time of the day/year cookie scent, a nice alternative to vanilla, and a good throw. May have to grab some more next time I’m at the store.

I am wearing L’Artisan Premier Figuier Extreme which has a lot of coconut. Fig alone can smell like coconut. I love this version. This morning I went to see my doctor for some fairly important tests, non-Covid related. I felt extremely anxious the whole time and hope I will not feel later that I’ve made a bad mistake given the current dire state of things here in Houston. Cases are up so high that the major hospitals are refusing entry to ambulances with ER patients. I thought I had adjusted somewhat to our “new normal” but now I’ve gone back into panic mode and having sleep disruption. I wake up wondering who would help take care of my kitties if I become immobilised or hospitalised. I have friends who would be willing to help but who would or should want to come in my house if I am sick and alone in here? I’m just not coping very well. Sorry to moan but thank you all for being here. Perfume, cooking, and good TV shows are the only things helping me get through.

It is understandable. We are back to dealing with the same anxiety sooner than expected. Very deep in my heart I hoped that improvement was going to last longer, but here we are again. Even though here in NY the situation is under control, I wonder for how long. I hope you will be fine and the rest of the NSTers and their families also. It is not easy, but let’s be positive!
      You smell great!

I’m sorry you’re under so much stress, Calypso.
Your moaning is justified. These are trying times, to say the least.
Hopefully your test results will come back ok and you can catch a little break.
Wishing you a restful night and please take care of yourself. Things will eventually improve.

Moan away – it’s good to unload. I hope you got good results from your test.

There was a NYT article on just what you’re concerned about regarding your kitties. Perhaps you can ask your vet if s/he knows of an agency that may be able to help?

Thank you! I have volunteered for an area cat shelter and perhaps should contact them. In prior times I could count on some friends or my brother but they’re all in high-risk categories themselves.

I’m so sorry about your stress and I hope that your sleep improves — stress-induced insomnia can be such a vicious cycle. Take gentle care of yourself! And yes, I love how fig has that ribbon of coconut running through it. I had a birthday dinner at Chez Panisse years ago and one of the courses was a little piece of fish steamed inside a fig leaf. It was subtle and wonderful and I really need to nick a few fig leaves from the neighbor and try it myself sometime.

Sending you a big hug and hope your tests go well. These are such scary times and don’t seem to be getting better. I’ve had many anxious moments and find that the more I stay home the less I want to go anywhere and get nervous when I do. But I think it’s only natural to feel that way as unpleasant as it is for now. Take care.

I hope all of you on the path of the tropical storm stay safe. Here in the Chicago area we’re finally having a tiny bit of a reprieve from the oppressive heat, humidity and drought of the past 2 weeks. The temperature is only 83, the dew point has dropped to only 66, and we had a nice rain last night, so I’m grateful! All I did all week was water and try to keep all the plants in my garden from dying. The only happy plant is the potted jasmine that summers on our little deck; it’s loaded with fragrant blossoms from the tropical weather. I don’t like to wear white floral scents but I love to bury my nose in the real thing and inhale deeply – I don’t quite understand that.

For today’s cp, I kept it simple and enjoyed YR Noix de Coco, a soft/sweet coconut vanilla, earlier today. After a dip in the backyard pool (treated myself to a nice family-size wading pool that arrived this week; can’t live w/o one in the summer and my usual park district one is a no-go), I’m now enjoying vintage EL Azuree Soleil Eau Fraiche Skinscent and looking forward to ‘going’ to Ravinia’s concert tonight (virtually, of course). We’ll be watching from our screened porch to get that outside vibe and sipping . . . Pina coladas, of course!?

Sending peace and ❤️ to all. Stay safe, stay well, stay hopeful!

Only briefly. Scheduled to return to the hot, humid stickies again next week. I hate it. I’m an ‘outside’ person and can’t stand to be outside in that kind of weather.

Have you tried the old-fashioned nicotiana (flowering tobacco)? They scent the night air like nothing else, absolutely intoxicating, but have no fragrance during the day. My very favorite summer plant.

Tropical Storm Fay has been hanging out with me today. At least she is being reasonably well behaved… not much wind at all, just plenty of rain. ? One of those Pina Coladas would be very nice to have right now!

SOTD = TM Angel EdP. for both coconut and pineapple. ??

We’ve gotten everything from swampy air to lighting and thunder and rain and wind. The trees are fully leafed, look heavy and are bendy at the top.

I had a couple rumbles of thunder, and that was all. SO much rain, though… I am curious about rain totals in the area. It got super swampy this afternoon when there was a break in the rain for a while.

With the EdP, I usually get candied pineapple right after I spray it. The coconut is harder to find, IMO.

For the CP, the perfectly acceptable Yves Rocher Noix de Coco EDT. I think if you want a coconut perfume, this will do nicely. Great layered with Manoi.

Taj Sunset for me today for the coconut.

Rough past week. Got to West Virginia last weekend and my son was sick half the time- bad enough to have to go get some fluids and anti-nausea meds in the ER. He was so sick I was worried he could drive back home Monday so I ended up helping him and his gf drive back to Alabama, thus delaying my return to California. Which was further delayed by a day due to canceled flights and such. Was great seeing all our loved ones, but man, it was a heck of a time!

I hope your son is feeling much better! You are a wonderful mom through and through!

How was the flight back? I am not keen on flying as I am seeing very divergent realities from half-full flights to packed ones. Even if the middle seat is empty, it still feels closed in.

Yes he is much better thankfully! It was horrible to watch so much puking ugh.

Flights were honestly varied. From LA to Pittsburg it was about 2/3 full I’d say. Masks required. I had hand sanitizer and disinfectant wipes so we wiped everything down and just hoped for the best. On the way back it was much better, I had a whole row to myself. So I’d say it just depends on the route.

This is such a great summer scent. Those Escadas hit the spot for me in the sunny, hot weather.

    SotD Angela Ciampagna Rosarium.

I love heat, but man, the local heat wave finally broke me today. I had insomnia last night and then had to do my physical training module (my only income right now) on 5 hours sleep in 38° heat. Ouf.

Oh – Robin you had asked yesterday if I liked EldO’s Like This. In the heat it seems pleasant enough but I’m not sure how I’d feel about it in temperate weather – it’s evanescing so fast, and my brain is mush, so I don’t trust my impressions very far right now! ?

I’m definitely going to save some of this sample til the weather gets considerably less crazy and sniff again.

It all just comes rushing as one giant blurry impression of strawberry and ginger currently, but I *know* I smelled it years ago in a department store in Singapore (which blessedly had A/C) and distinctly smelled pumpkin! So I think the heat is just smushing all the notes together, and/or making me a little crazy.

I had a nice cool shower and am sipping some mediocre red wine while wafting Kiehl’s Original Musk. Trying to wind down properly and reset!

Partial CP credit for me today. HDP 1804 (again!) to start, then I had to dress like a grown-up so followed my shower with Jergens coconut lotion, which faded fast but is always nice while it lasts. For my meeting, went off project (unless there’s something I am not smelling — always possible) with Cristalle Eau Verte. I’ve realized that most of my “I mean business” scents are Chanel. (31RC, Cuir de Russie also are in that category for me.)

May everyone have a safe, restful weekend.

I expressed that same worry to a colleague yesterday morning, hours before my meeting. I think I had beginner’s luck — my hair looked acceptably good for not having seen a professional since January (last appointment was to have been March 12, alas, and I have never been very good with the blow dryer, but it went well yesterday) and my lightweight (linen/cotton, loosely knit) cabled pullover read as “pulled together” when “dressed up” would have been too much. First time since early May that I’d worn makeup of any kind — I was a daily foundation/mascara/brows/lip person before March, and I am not sure I will ever go back. Oh, and visible earrings, vs. the tiny comfy hoops I’ve been wearing every couple of weeks to make sure the holes haven’t closed.

I was pared down to mascara when this started, and a swipe of lipstick once in a blue moon, and now I don’t even always do that :-)
