Friday scent of the day 6/5

Posted by Robin on 5 June 2020 319 Comments

It's Friday and World Environment Day. Our community project for today: wear a perfume with osmanthus, if you have one.

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

Of course I'm in Hermès Osmanthe Yunnan.

Reminder: on 6/12, we're In the garden...wear a perfume that was inspired by a particular garden, or that reminds you of a particular garden, or that just smells like a garden in general. (I think someone suggested this, raise your hand if it was you!)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Since my Osmanthe Yunnan is unavailable right now, I’m in Hiram Green Moon Bloom. Gorgeous sunny day here and perfect for it.

PSA: Hiram Green has just announced a new scent to be released June 11, Vivacious. Notes are bergamot, violet, carnation, iris and amber. Can’t wait!!

I assume the usual spots: Etiket in Canada, Tigerlily/Indigo/Potion Naturals/Luckyscent in USA.

It would be a good one to split…although I’ve found that Hiram Green atomizers are sh-tty for a spray into the atomizer splitting method.

Have you tried syringe splitting? The HG atomizers cooperate very well with syringes + needles. I learned how to do it using YouTube videos a few years ago; it’s really quite simple.

That’s good to know. Tauer’s flash series is also horrible for splitting by spray

          • Koyel says:
            5 June 2020 at 12:10 pm

I got mine on Amazon! They only sell blunt needles, which is exactly what you need for this. I use 25-gauge needles and 3-mL syringes. I think this is the pack I bought (totally overkill, but I didn’t know what would work at the time, and it was cheap enough to be worth getting it and testing it out): https://www.amazon.com/BSTEAN-Pack-Refilling-Measuring-Applicator/dp/B07RSTQ6RV/ref=sr_1_9?dchild=1&keywords=syringe&qid=1591373289&s=industrial&sr=1-9

    Bright and cheerful photo Robin!

Joining the Hermès Osmanthe Yunnan club today. I had forgotten how refreshing and enjoyable it is.

On my second cup of coffee and counting the hours for the working day to finish. Grey and rainy day, but I will still take my lunchtime walk and get some fresh air.

    Happy Friday! ?

I’m totally off the cp with Hermès Mandarine Ambree. It’s a feeling a bit sticky here this morning. I woke up to gray skies, but they are clearing and the sun is trying to peek through. I’m afraid the rain is headed toward lillyjo, sorry my friend.☹️
My son is headed home for the weekend and I am headed out for a long overdue and much needed pedicure. All in all, it’s shaping up to be a good day. Happy Friday everyone!?

Wit is my SOTD. Wish it had made it to the top of my to buy list before it was discontinued. :-(

On this stressful Friday, I have had a Dunkin Donut coffee role and some of their good coffee….

This weekend, i am going to work in my garden no matter what is going on. I took next Monday off, because the next several week will be busy at my work, so I have a long weekend to do stuff in the garden, and I don’t have to do cooking for the week until Monday.

Almost like a vacation… :-) Any excuse to not go to the grocery store until I absolutely have to…

Yesterday, I walked 0.8 miles to Wegmans using the shortest possible route. It was actually difficult keeping the mask on given the humidity but it’s good practice. No line and there and not COVID-crowded. For the first time, I did not feel like having to take a shower right away.

Instead I’m sampling Musc Ravageur from the swapmeet. This smells so familiar and it’s driving me crazy that I can’t point my finger on it. Chergui maybe? Or is it like Ambre Sultan??

Do you have customer contact? Eons ago for 2 months in the summer, I worked at a convenience store where we rotated through different parts (although I would have drawn the line at cleaning the bathroom). I hated the deli but loved the cash register. For some reason, either no customers were mean or I had Teflon skin and just went about my business with a smile on my face.

I am wearing Galop d’Hermes, so I am a house twin of yours, Robin. On Fragrantica, osmanthus is listed as one of the notes. I can also smell a little bit of the Hermes Caleche I put on yesterday evening after a shower.

Was going to look for my sample of Perris Monte Carlo Osmanthus, but the hand went to SL Vitriol d’Oeillet.
I have been on a Serge Lutens kick more or less since the pandemic started. Maybe my soul has been tortured enough to finally mesh with his perfumes? Although, to me, this one could be Bas de Soie’s sister. Polished and easy wearing.

My conclusion after a week of Osmanthus: not my favourite note. It’s been fun to learn more about though.

I’m joining lots of you today in Hermès Osmanthe Yunnan.

I would like to post two freebies (both received in previous swaps), which did not end up working for me.

    1. Dior Privée Oud Ispahan (about 15 mLs)
    2. Robert Piguet Knightsbridge (about 8 mLs)
Please call dibs here and then contact me at arzeznik in the land of comcast with a dot and a net.

SOTD is OJ Osmanthus Elixir. Saved the best of my osmanthus scents for last.

I haven’t logged in to work yet and am dreading it. My boss is out, and so is my partner on my main work task, so yesterday I was juggling three jobs. Not looking forward to doing that again today, urg.

But TGIF!!! And it has cooled off! The fog is back, so it’s supposed to be 20 degrees cooler today. Ahhhhh

Not much commenting from me lately but I had a staycation this week.

Under pre-covid circumstances we probably would have visited France, italy or spain for 2 weeks.
But now we shortened the period to 1 week and we stayed at home mostly (after a short stay in a B&B in the woods).
And it was pretty nice actually!

I made another horseback riding tour through the woods (on a wonderful Andalusian horse).

I started reading a book about one of my favourite directors Hayao Miyazaki. Its very insightful.

And I watched some interesting movies: The Lodge (a thriller/horror with a nice twist on the evil stepmother trope), The Killing of A Sacred Deer and (for 2nd time) The Favourite.

And yay!!! We are finally getting much needed rain in the Netherlands. ?️?️?️

    My SotD is Vetiver Extraordinaire.

    Happy weekend everyone!

            Tea!
Do you know some good tea suppliers/stores/brands available in NL?

i drink more coffee than tea, and I am definitely not a tea connaisseur, but I can always do with some new suggestions.

I love all kinds of teas, from earthy greens to darjeeling, also like smoky. And i dont mind fruits or flowers thrown in.

Oh and I hate pickwick with a passion ? (urgh those things give me a stomach ache).

I have ordered/bought from Thee van Sander (currently out of stock for the most part), Theemaas in Rotterdam, Hotsoup, Betjeman and Barton (Den Haag).

This order was from Mariage Frères. Still my holy grail for perfumed tea.

A leetle to headachy this am for wearing a proper fume. Leaf-blowers, trimmers, and saws began at 7:45 this AM, next door. The noise did nothing for my growing migraine. Inherited Raw Spirit samples from a generous NSTer recently. So scenting the air with Winter Oak only.

My Habinta journey: So, several years ago I bought a bottle, blind, of Habinita on eBay because it was so admired in The Guide. (This was shortly after I really fell down the rabbit hole, entirely due to The Guide, which turned my love for perfume into a full on obsession.) Well, I hated it so much that I promptly turned around and resold it on eBay. However, I only sold it for the shipping price, with the caveat that I thought it smelled horrible and that it might be off. The person who bought it was kind enough to write me that she thought it smelled fine, wonderful even! Years later, I was curious about what I would think of the perfume now. Ordered a decant from StC. Oh glory! To me, it is like cigarettes, powder, leather, and flowers. I love it!

I also like perfumes like Habanita. I call them “matronly” perfumes, the smell of human, flawed but warmhearted women – definitely not girls. Apart from Habanita, I love PR La Nuit, Theo Fennell and for spine stiffening: Cabochard.

SOTD = Atelier Cologne Love Osmanthus

Meh. It smelled like what I imagine warm watery orange juice tastes like. It got better because I made it disappear with

SOTD = Jo Malone Myrrh & Tonka

This is one of my take no prisoners perfumes. It will take over and hide any perfume you don’t enjoy and fix the problem. Maybe it could be a future CP?

In other news, I bought ingredients to make banana pudding to use up my sad looking bananas; however, I may have accidentally mentally spliced together the ingredients for banana pudding and Rocky Road ice cream. Could be interesting ????.

I wore all my osmanthus perfumes earlier this week and didn’t feel like a repeat, so today I’m wearing Teatro alla Scala. Ate the first raspberries of the season off the canes yesterday in the back yard, but the slugs got the first strawberries. I sprinkled some diatomaceous earth in the bed so that should help.

Ugh, slugs. They’ve been ravaging out strawberry patch, too, and a bunch of the berries also have squirrel-like nibbles on them >:o Still, we were able to make a leetle berry salad out of our homegrown strawberries, raspberries, and blueberries yesterday :)

You guys are way ahead of us here in the woods – I have a bunch of semi-feral raspberries that are just blooming now. I was thinking I should take a couple metal posts out there this weekend and run a line of wire and tame some of them so it will be easier to pick the berries instead of crawling through a thicket!

I’m ruthless at ripping out canes anywhere I don’t want them. I have posts with wire running between them, and anything not behind the wire and six inches from the next cane gets pulled out.

Teatro all Scala is one of the all time great orientals, and a proper 80s powerhouse. I was very pleasantly surprised to find out Luca Turin had such high opinion of it – it does not have an individual entry, but he mentions it twice in the original Perfume Guide. Are you wearing EdT / EdP or something more intense? I actually have a bottle of the Extrait, but I don’t know if I will ever have enough hazmat equipment on hand to pull that one off.

My SOTD is Rahele, I don’t get a lot of Osmanthus out of this, it seems to be very much blended with the other notes. It’s a lovely scent though and one I got on a whim this January as it was heavily discounted. No regrets, it is now my most worn NV.

Tea is a tropical green tea from Palais des Thés. The weather is not very tropical, it’s chilly and raining, but as this country is in desperate need of water I don’t mind.

Love Osmanthe Yunnan, a bit too fleeting for me to wear often, but stunningly beautiful.

Yes, three times, that’s how much I loved it. It’s got the largest collection of Marc Chagall’s work I believe.
Last May we took a day trip to the very picturesque and very touristy St-Paul-de-Vence, about 1 hour bus ride north of Nice, where Chagall spent his last twenty years and where he is buried.
          Have you seen the museum?

I have visited the Musée Biblique and loved it. Nice is a great place for museums all round.
I was also lucky enough to visit the large Chagall exhibition in Brussels in I think 2015.
I haven’t (yet) visited St.Paul de Vence. I would love to.

Lush 100 Kisses Deep solid, which is kind of detergenty at the top but mostly osmanthus marmalade, sweet and stewed. (Stacks well with Rose Jam, too, but not today.)

It must be that I don’t care much for osmanthus, since I found only one perfume with it as a listed note. I’m wearing Good girl gone bad. Honestly, I don’t really like it.
I went to the post office today to mail out a swap, and overheard the man next to me say he was mailing perfume. It took all I had to not interrupt his transaction with “what perfume are you mailing?!” I was so curious as to what was in that box!
I will never know, since I chose to not be a weirdo ?

Like Robin and probably 25 % of all NSTers, I am in Osmanthe Yunnan today. I don’t know, though, the tea really screams on my skin and drowns everyone else out. I don’t reach for it that much, and given how universally loved it is, perhaps I should pass it on. But those travel sprays are just so dang cute, and I love having a full row of Hermessence travel sprays :)

On another note, my latest workout spree is doing Chloe Ting’s 28-day summer shred challenge or whatever it’s called. She is really kicking my butt. I do well in a structured workout environment, and having her tell me what to do for four weeks will be good for me. Let’s see if I can turn this four-pack into a six-pack, eh? (No, that’s not going to happen, but I do hope my four-pack will be more clearly defined!)

I’ve been trying to figure out why I work out so much, given that I hate it. I’ve decided that it’s because it lets me control what my body looks like. I’ve worked out a good system for getting tangible results through working out (weight loss, muscle definition), and in such an uncertain time, with rampant death at the hands of viruses and bad people, it helps to have something to control.

I used to get this same result from Osmanthe Yunnan; all I got for a while was a fairly rough tea whenever I wore it. And then things just changed, and the osmanthus returned. I don’t know why – maybe different body lotion? Anyway, maybe you can keep your full row for a while yet…

My daughter is doing one of these by her as well – a two week ab one? Made my poor husband join her for a couple sessions, too!
I do a lot of Pilates workouts these days, from a subscription I have had for years to a German studio. Because of bandwidth issues, I can only do them when nobody else in the house is online yet – here’s an advantage to teenager who sleep until noon. It helps with mood boosting for me (any exercise really, but I really like those German trainers).

It was a hard video, or maybe several videos (I took a video of them working out, but nobody appreciated that).
I think what I like about the German trainers is that they speak German. They are mostly studio owners, probably often in their 30s – 50s. And culturally, they just aren’t as perky as the young and fabulous people that my daughter likes. :)

Yesterday I wore SL Datura Noir just because I saw it and was in the mood for it. I sprayed with abandon. I just find it so beautiful–I adore datura as a note. Then I got curious about something and looked up the notes for it on Fragrantica and, sure enough, it lists “Chinese osmanthus” among them! I seem to be one of the few real osmanthus lovers on this board, and I have a lot of fragrances with it in. It’s funny, I don’t understand at all why anyone could not love it. But that’s how it is among this wonderful world of smells!

P.S. On another note, my poor sweet kitty not only has a very nasty problem with her gut/digestive system, but also likely cancerous tumor in a lymph node. The doctor has advised against trying to do surgery on it due to her general age and ill health. Meanwhile I’m trying to make her gut more happy, by among other things, giving (or trying to give her) Metamucil (psyllium). He said be sure not to buy the orange flavored kind!

Since I haven’t really got the hang of what osmanthus smells like yet, I just had to go with what it said on the tin (or, at least, on the website). I therefore opted for Oliver & Co.’s Vetiverus which is supposed to be just as much an osmanthus scent than it is a vetiver one.

    SotD = Osmanthe Yunnan

because Yes to Hermes! and because I’m predictable like that. ;)

OY wasn’t my thing when I first smelled it long ago (leathery tea? no thanks), but today it’s very appealing. There’s a bit of a hairspray thing going on for the first 30 seconds, which I don’t mind. Hairspray brings childhood memories of my mum’s teased hair-do. Once the alcohol evaporates the pretty florals and fruit come out strong (for a Hermessence scent).

This OY sample is among the very first samples I bought way, way back (from The Perfumed Court!) as a new little fume bunny. I’m glad I saved the sample, and that it didn’t evaporate.

Wearing OY gave me an excuse to get out all the Hermessence samples and sniff. For days I’ve been trying to remember which one got on my nerves. It’s Epice Marine, gosh that’s a weird scent, something I’d love to get someone to wear on a dare.

Happy Friday, fragrance friends. Let’s keep it real, you smell like heaven.

Lovely NSTers, thanks so much for your kind and sympathetic comments yesterday. You do my heart good. :)

Not having worn perfume for months, I decided to take it easy on my re-entry today, with a small spray of vintage Houbigant Le Parfum Ideal, shared by a sweet NSTer some time last year, I think. It’s a soft powdery carnation to my nose, especially pleasing as I look at the dianthus blooming in the back yard.

    Waves and hugs to all.

      Hi FearsMice,
I didn’t see your post yesterday (just went back to find it). I join the others in sending you a hug and hope that you’ll continue to visit when you can and spray away if it helps at all – sometimes it does help me “decorate” my day (was that Tania who said that?) and sometimes I just can’t. But I miss seeing you around and hope you can hang in and come back to us soon.

I’d used up my sample of Fig Tea, so instead I did a sniff-off of Hermes Agar Ebene and Heeley Agarwood. The Hermes smells just like Cuir d’Ange to my nose. The Heeley has a bit more complexity to it, although it smells like it would better suit an autumn day.

I tried an Agar Ebene sample – found it really unique, hard to describe. I both liked it and didn’t like it. Probably should have kept it, but I passed it on so someone else could try.

I didn’t like Cuir d’Ange although I can’t tell you why except that leathers are always iffy for me.

Participating in Daim Blond but I had planned to layer it with AP l’Agent for even more osmanthus but could’t locate my bottle, anyway DB is behaving very elegantly, it’s a tailored kind of scent and fits well with the rainy weather today.

After long perusal of Fragrantica’s list of perfumes containing osmanthus notes, I realized I don’t own a single one. I do have a small sample of Papillon Angelique, and I was all set to wear that, but then completely forgot it was Friday, and sprayed Jardin sur le Nil liberally instead.

    Good afternoon, folks! :)

Found the little decant of Ormonde Jayne Osmanthus that a lovely NST person sent to me. (Thank you!) This is one of the ones I get what I perceive as a “Play-Doh” note from. Maybe that’s how I’m interpreting what others get as a soft leathery/fruity note? idk

I hope everyone has a decent weekend!

Happy Friday, everyone! I’m requesting double points: wearing Ashoka on my left and Rahele on my right. Both of them started out rather beeeeeg, but I’m getting the osmanthus in the drydown of both, especially the Rahele. I’ve noticed that the note shows up on my skin during the drydown more than the initial spray.

Big hugs to all of you today. ?

I started reading Ndre Leon Talley’s memoir yesterday (US Vogue/ fashion) and he used the adjective ‘tony’ to describe a neighbourhood ( as in swanky ) . I have never heard anyone use that word here and wonder how common it is in America?
I am off on an adventure for the weekend, about 3 hours inland to my brothers, just checking snowfall warnings…should be okay ….but wintery and beautiful. We have to sort out my mother’s estate a bit now that business is resuming. Dreading it. But it is also his birthday so there will be wine!

People used to say it, but maybe 20-ish years ago? But I have not heard anybody say it in a long time.

Kanuka, I ordered that oolong today, I should get it next week. It was a bit expensive but hopefully like most oolongs will stand up to multiple infusions.

Hope the trip goes better than you’re expecting, or that the wine really helps :-)

    Osmanthe Yunnan for the win!

I am mostly in the garage today, painting bookcases with DIY chalk paint. I got it into my head to “refresh” the decor in my bedroom, and I’m going for lots and lots of neutral creams, beiges and whites. I’m at that point where I’ve gone too far to turn back, but regret actually starting such a silly project.

2nd Eschmeling, hope it looks gorgeous when you’re done! I detest painting, which is all I do lately, but I am SO pleased when things look fresh and new. My husband likes to point out that the sense of being pleased doesn’t last, but a new color or coat usually pleases me for 4-5 years, so I think that is worth it.

TDC Osmanthus. I was looking for something else in The Sample Sea and bumped into this one. Meh. I was looking for Pavillon d’Or, then also saw Geisha Botan. My brain insists that both Dusita and Aroma M have an osmanthus in the line, but it’s not these. Lacking the bandwidth to research, I just went ahead and added a dab of both. I’m fondly remembering my days of Reeking Havoc. Hugs to all…

I’m off topic, even though I love Osmanthus in theory. In Nuits a Doha, from the swapmeet, which I just love! I could wear this every day, hot, cold, work, home….I tried finding more afforable clones, but so far, no dice. Hdp Marquis de Sade has similar notes, but I don’t like it as much.
Other “feminine-ish” tobaccos I should look for? Or is the immortelle that is making me swoon?
In other notes, finally went to the mountains yesterday for a hike, it was lovely, devoid of people, and we got terribly lost. Luckily, husband has better map-reading skills than I do.

If it is the immortelle, I’d recommend checking out Goutal’s Sables, or Atelier Cologne’s Blanche Immortelle. For a really inexpensive alternative to Nuit a Doha, I’d also suggest Vertigo Cuir, by Kyse Perfumes, which to my nose has a similar vibe, with its combo of leather and caramel. Eschmeling, are you in the US? If so, I can send you a sample of the Vertigo Cuir, to see if it strikes you in a similar manner.

I am in the US, thanks for offering! I think I have figured out what it is – the drydown smells like the high sierras on a hot day. Or any dry, hot pine-heavy woods. I’d love to try Vertigo Cuir, although I am justifying to myself that a scent that replicates the Sierras is worth splurging on…
Thanks for the other suggestions as well.

SOTD is YR Naturelle Osmanthus layered over Dame Perfumery Osmanthus Perfume Oil to heighten that suede/y, apricot-y note I love so much. Count me in the among the osmanthus lovers! The Dame osmanthus oil is a must for osmanthus lovers, and both of YR’s Naturelle scents are summer favorites of mine- light and breezy, a bit citrussy, a bit floral, and a little grassy – like a sunshiney afternoon in a meadow.

Although my lilacs are gone, bonus lilacs hanging over the fence from my neighbor’s yard have joined my peonies and iris that are finally in bloom. They sure do look pretty in their vases and give my heart a lift each time I see them. Like many of you, recent events and the civil unrest that followed (so close here in one of Chicago’s inner-ring suburbs) after all the Covid-19 stress has left me emotionally exhausted this week. But a few words from my wise yoga teacher the other day once again helped me put things in perspective: ‘observe but don’t absorb.’ Yes, that definitely helped; hope it helps you.

Hot and sticky this week but should be a beautiful cool and sunny weekend. Can’t wait to turn off the a/c and open the windows. Hope your weekend is a beautiful one, too!

Totally off CP all week as my fledgling perfume collection has no osmanthus, but did burn my Diptyque Shanghai candle with its osmanthus note for today’s work Zoom tho. It helped me maintain outward equilibrium, if not inward.

The show creation I’m helping with has had to push dates at least 6mo but is looking to “Covid-proof”… by turning from a more tightly structured 75-min show format into a 120-min performance-art installation that would balloon the set and props budget and potentially necessitate hiring 1-2 more artists, in an environment where no one has money right now.

I get why that structure may work better for a socially-distanced cast and audience but I think I need to bail on this one and put my cards on going back to school this fall. I love the artistic director and the artists involved in this project, but I just can’t see them being able to pay me for my work when the budget was already scraped bare.

But, that makes my decision easier! So next week will be about getting my transcript printed and scanned somewhere, so I can apply to the program I’m looking at!

Hi all! Wearing Liquid Dreams for the cp. It’s very pretty and has excellent development while it lives its short life, but it’s gone in 3 hours. Would never have known osmanthus was there if Fragrantica didn’t tell me so. Also I thought Boxeuses did have osmanthus but apparently not. I guess I don’t really know osmanthus despite trying several scents with the flower in the name
