Friday scent of the day 5/22

Posted by Robin on 22 May 2020 318 Comments

Happy World Goth Day! Our community project for today: get your goth on! (Need help? Here's the wikipedia page on Goth subculture.)

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I'm in L'Artisan Parfumeur Timbuktu, which I think is just (barely) weird enough and just earthy enough to qualify, even if it isn't the most obvious goth choice (L'Artisan Voleur de Roses might have been better, but I haven't got any and it doesn't suit me anyway). I also considered doing goth-lite with L'Artisan Passage d'Enfer, but it's just not somber enough, and I am determined to finish my L'Artisan week.

Reminder: on 5/29, wear a perfume by The Different Company, Tauer Perfumes, Tokyo Milk, Tocca or Téo Cabanel, if you have one. Partial credit for any other small-ish brand that starts with the letter T.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I’m wearing the wonderful, and hopefully goth like Eau de Protection. A gorgeous rose and a wonderful fragrance. It’s raining outside, not as heavily as I wished but still; it smells wonderful outside.

We’ve got rain too, probably for the next 2 days. You are happier to see it than I am…

Our countryside is in great need of water, so yes I am. It also helps mitigate my hay fever symptoms a bit.
I think I remember that you have been having loads of rain, and that does get tedious just send some of yours to my country!

Hey Twin! I had the same thought. I’m not hugely into goth perfumes so my choices were limited. My other choice was Bruno Acampora, Sballo, for it musty old stone building vibe. I think we both made a great choice.
We’ll get rain on tomorrow which I can handle as long as it rains and then leaves.. Have a nice weekend!

I love Mon Parfum Chéri, which I think is dark and brooding enough to be considered Goth. And yes we are smelling good. Hope you have a good weekend as well!

Ohhh, I wish it’d rain all weekend here! It’ll be hot in SF this weekend, and living by the beach, we’re expecting to see multitudes flock to our area.
While I love living by the beach, we do get more than our share of drag racers, fireworks and folks whooping it up.
I shouldn’t complain too much, we also have fantastic views and hot surfers in various stages of undress, so there’s that. 😀

Lol about those surfers. We had 5 of them drown a week ago or so, during a storm.

And I obviously don’t mean to laugh at the death of those unfortunate youngsters. Rereading it, it seemed I found that fact amusing and I do not.

So shocking to lose so many obviously fit and skilled-in-the-water folks. If I recall, many of them were instructors? Just goes to show Mother Nature can be unpredictable…

An unfortunate mixture of weather, wind and foam. And young people are not always the most careful. I don’t know whether there will be a big investigation into it. They’ve recovered 4 of the 5 bodies after some intensive searching in difficult circumstances. I feel very sorry for the parents of the one who wasn’t found. It’s always harder to let go, I guess.

I spent a lot of time at the beach back in the day (beach volleyball and triathalon were my sports of choice) – and I fully remember not caring what stage of undress I was in when changing from swim suit into regular clothing and such.
Ahhh, to be 5’9″ and 130 lbs again, my height moved to my girth…. 😀

Happy FriYAY all! My SOTD is a mixture of two sprays of Voleur de Roses by L’ Artisan and one spray of Incense Pure by Sonoma Scent Studio.
Former Goth/Club Kid from the 1980s, channeling my inner goth wearing Ellis Faas 101 Red lipstick and Guerlain Kohl liner in black.
The hubby is off today, so we’re off to walk a few miles!
Favorite goth concert of all time is Peter Murphy (I think in 1989).

Ooooooh, Peter Murphy in 1989 would have been AMAZING!!!!

I saw the Swans in 1990, but they were not my favorite. I saw Sisters waaaaay later, in 1996 or so, but they were still great.

Love the Sisters! I saw them at Webster Hall in like 2005?

Early check-in today or I get swamped with work and forget. Happy to celebrate WGD as a lover of all things goth (I have a goth soul?). I’m wearing 2 things, one in each hand:
Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab (duh) Belonging to the Darkness which smells nothing like its listed notes. Smells to me like dirt, chocolate, and patchouli.

And (of course!) Lush Death &Decay.
Excited they’ve decided to give us Monday off- we were on a no holiday or vacation day allowed for the last 2 months.
    Happy Friday, y’all! It’s Friday, I’m in Love ???

I’m better now that I don’t have a grueling commute (or any commute ?). So now work is just mentally draining, but not physically.
This is my only BPAL made perfume (was made for a goth-y jewelry line). It reminds me of a raw, unpolished Coromandel with a bit of skank.

Good morning all! I’m off to go light things on fire. What perfume does one wear to a prescribed burn? I went with a couple dashes of SMN Caprifoglio, mostly because it was the subtlest and most refreshing of what was handy. Not at all gothy, but “goth” feels like the wrong vibe for high-risk activities.

Lighting things on fire feels slightly more Metal than Goth, but I think a good argument could be made that you are The Gothest Of All since you are deliberately going to light stuff on fire today.

World Goth Day is a really fun project, thanks, Robin!

After much consideration, and a complete lack of any BPAL scents (what is more Goth than BPAL?), I am wearing Devil’s Nightcap by Lush. I smell like brimstone, smoke and whiskey, and could probably fit right in to the Batcave about now.

Also wearing a black tank top and chunky black nail polish with hints of holographic glitter. Someone stop me before I start doing the lightbulb dance!

Late last night/early this morning: went with Nobile 1492 Patchouli Nobile. I wasn’t expecting that the fragrance would be that dirty, but the earthiness seemed very appropriate for a goth sort of scent.

      This afternoon: Profumum Roma Olibanum

I never did get around to trying to reproduce the scent of a clove cigarette, but that’s okay. I think the most gothic scent I wore this week was Voleur de Roses. I hadn’t even seen Robin’s review, where she comments on how goth it is. 🙂 The dirty patchouli of Patchouli Nobile also seemed pretty appropriate to the theme.

I looked at the listed notes again, and they include white pepper, frankincense, jasmine and amber, among others. Maybe the jasmine added to the funkiness.

I’m in the “black clothes happy it’s goth day” crew. My choice for perfume is Smolderose by January Scent Project – rose, incense, roasted seashells. It’s odd but super compelling and I’m really glad it’s a cloudy day because I don’t think it’s a hot weather scent. I really love the scents from this house.

Listening to the Cure and grading online assignments isn’t the worst way to spend the morning. Black coffee, lots of black eyeliner and Ruby Woo lipstick complete the theme.

Have a fabulous (or dark and brooding) goth day!

Joining you in wearing a L’Artisan but going in a totally different direction with Drole De Rose today. Never would have thought I’d wear this type of scent but I enjoy it immensely. I feel quite French and chic wearing it for some reason.

I wish I could say I have some fun Memorial Day weekend plans but, nope. I did buy a watermelon which feels summery and I’ll be watching Jaws which is a tradition in our home, and… ???

Insolence. For some reason I think violets are kind of Goth. Violets bring to mind both romance and decay.

We are planning an adventure today. Tram to ferry…to Wegman’s in Brooklyn. More energy than we likely have but we think we will do it.

It was fun. We could easily have purchased more and likely will next time.

We did it mostly as something to try. Ferry was great. Door to door probably took an hour. There was a line to get into Wegman’s, but it took less time than we thought it would.

If anything, it made us realize we can use the ferry more frequently.

        Yes. Victorian.

Wegman’s was a hoot. Line around the corner, which to my husband made it seem “a huge mistake” for us to go there. I sent him over to sit across the street in the shade and then texted him when I got close. Took far less time than we expected. And we enjoyed the ferry ride.

Chypre Mousse! I should have worn that today.

Instead, I am in Solstice Scents Estate Carnation, which smells awful on me when I first put it on, burned sugar and something rotting in a plastic bag awful, but after a few minutes it turns into a very very dark sort of suggestion of carnations at a funeral, lots of incense, musty curtains, flowers dying, very Goth! Now after several hours, it continues to be a dark sort of floral sort of incense with smoke and wood…I don’t love it, I don’t even like it really, but it is intriguing and smells not at all like anything else in my collection. And it fit the theme here. 🙂
Hope everyone has the best Memorial Day Weekend possible under the circumstances…

I am wearing Jo Malone Pomegranate Noir today and drinking a cup of chai tea. I am not sure Pomegranate Noir fits the goth theme, but it was between this and C&S Dark Rose, which was my community project last week. Dark Rose would definitely been a better fit for the theme, I think. Maybe I’ll wear it later on.

I got my pedicure yesterday. It felt great ! I had to wear a mask, sign in, and use hand sanitizer when I walked in, but it is a step towards normalcy.

Tonight, we are taking my parents and my husband’s parents to dinner at a restaurant that we used to go to practically every Friday night, back when the world was normal.

GOTH, yes!!! Lol, I dressed goth for a few years, pleather, jet black hair and safety pins…and chokers from Hot Topic, LOL. And my friends and I flirting with guys that worked at Hot Topic or record stores. lol. Guys were hot with eyebrow rings? lol. Nine Inch Nails, Ministry, The Crow Soundtrack, Tool, Skinny Puppy(sometimes, SP was a bit too dark for me a bit! Lol) in my tape player. Also, Concrete Blonde, Tori Amos. I never got into Marilyn Manson, he was not my jam. Evanescence..meh, great voice though. I loved it when Bowie and NIN collaborated on several songs.

My favorite concert was likely A Perfect Circle/Nine Inch Nails back in 2000. It completely rocked. I was in the front row(with a crappy date ugh, LOL) and was too close to the speaker. My ears were messed up for a few hours after. It was all part of it I guess.

For Goth day, I shall layer Poison with Amouage Memoir..why not? Lol

Gosh, you brought back a lot of memories of the mid-1990s for me. lol

I never got to a Nine Inch Nails concert, but I liked a lot of the songs on “The Downward Spiral” album, and a few other NIN songs. This week’s project made me think of the line: “Stale incense, old sweat, and lies, lies, lies!”

My brother was into many of the other bands, too. The only concert I’ve been to (ever) was when he had an extra ticket for a Marilyn Manson concert. I don’t think I was really the target audience for that sort of thing, but it was…different. It struck me as being a shock the bourgeoisie effort. J. managed to alarm our parents, anyway.

Those Hot Topic chokers and other accessories looked cool! LOL. At least, I thought so at the time. That’s probably where I got J. a black-and-white striped scrunchie to go with the black-and-white striped stockings he’d wear then. He said that the girls he hung out with were impressed by how nicely coordinated he was. LOL!

      Wow, brought so much back…

Checked the Wikipedia entry for Nine Inch Nails, which refreshed my memory. I liked a lot of the songs from “Pretty Hate Machine” and a few from “The Downward Spiral.” For a time I only knew them to listen to, and was in blissful ignorance of the imagery of the videos…

My brother recently told me that the 1990s, especially the mid-1990s, were a messed-up time for him. He had weird associations about the people he watched the movie “The Hunger” with. J. introduced me to “The Crow” soundtrack. I don’t think as much personal angst was mixed into his viewings of “The Crow.”

He loved Tori Amos, and I wasn’t all that impressed. It just wasn’t my kind of music. I think part of it for him was the way she rode that piano bench in the videos. He’s still a fan of Tool and some of the other bands you listed above. On a road trip — I think it was a few years later — he played Bad Religion’s “Against the Grain” album. I liked several of the songs on there.

I was a proper Goth from the cohort of late 80s/early 90s, of the Sisters of Mercy/Bauhaus persuasion. I have lots of interesting memories from these days, few photos, plus a copy of Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch signed by Andrew Eldritch. Did not wear perfume in those days save for a dab of original Poison, which would have been too fluffy and sweet in the drydown for any all black clad outings. Plus no Goth I knew would be caught dead or undead wearing anything with vanilla. Or, with apologies to all fans of Voleur de Roses etc, patchouli, which was a dirty hippie 70s thing.
I thought what I would actually wear today if I had to do Goth business to do: hanging out in half-ruined cemetery for photo ops during the day, going out to a concert / club later on, and I think would go for Strange Invisible Perfumes Aquarius which is a beautiful herbal incense skin scent, for the day. Switching to night mode, there is only one choice that hits the trifecta of incense, in this case choya loban, the destructive distillation of frankincense, wild rose and leather, plus a general air of menace: SIP Black Rosette. It’s my big SIP favorite and it is especially stunning in parfum version. I have few bottles of EdP but sadly I don’t have a full bottle of parfum, just few smaller decants but I will wear them happily/gloomily as long as they last ?
Perfume wise, extra points would be granted for dabbing CB I Hate Perfume Black March in few strategic places. Fresh dug grave vibe and all.
    Photo evidence here: https://www.instagram.com/p/CAf2WEEnxKX/?igshid=cbi135erg5ez
One photo of me in full on Goth regalia and warpaint, from an intense sword ? play photo session sometime around 1991, plus Aquarius and Black Rosette next to what I would like to think is a sexy Goth glove accessory, but is in fact, thumb spica splint for my busted hand. Rocking it extra hard today while I smell so nice.

What’s more ‘goth’ than Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab? For World Goth Day, I’m wearing BPAL Zombi, chosen for its name and because I had a sample from my purchase a few years ago of ‘Nasty Woman,’ (remember that one?). But I love Zombi; its notes – dried roses, rose leaf, Spanish moss, oakmoss and deep brown earth – perfectly suit not just today’s cp but the season, the weather, the day, and the mood of the whole week around here and I wish I’d been wearing it all week.

Last weekend’s heavy rains flooded much of the area, left several inches of itself in my basement, a new leak in the roof, and my PBS station (pretty much all I watch) off the air all week due to flooding in the building where they broadcast from. Some roads in my area are still closed, and the forecast for the holiday weekend is for more rain and very warm and humid weather. Yuck!

At least it’s been a temporary diversion from the Covid-19 news. Even my 3 indoor cats are growing tired of seeing only us – if they see us visiting with a neighbor socially distancing through the screen door, they all appear looking sad, not understanding why their former admirer doesn’t come inside and pet them and tell them how beautiful they are. Poor babies!?

So I’m trying to focus instead on a favorite quote from my yoga teacher, ‘Be grateful, not just for what you have, but also for what you’ve escaped.’ I am reminded of the news clip I saw the other day of the flooding in Michigan with houses uprooted from their foundation and literally floating down the river and, yes indeedy, I am grateful!

Wishing everyone a holiday weekend of gratitude for what you have – and also what you haven’t had! Take care; stay safe.

Today’s goth perfume attempt is De Profundis. I know I have gothier perfumes than this, but I think at least the name inspiration match up. Also, I rescued a few of my evaporating oil-separated decants with perfumer’s alcohol this morning, and De Profundis was one of them. The other two were Un Lys and CdH Daphne. I also decided to dress in all black today except for a red coral necklace that was made for me by a friend.

In other news, I found out last week someone fraudulently submitted an unemployment claim with my name/SSN. Luckily, my HR at work sent it back marked as fraud and sent me a checklist to go through to deal with this. I’ve also let the unemployment office know it was fraud and filed a police report. Still need to get in touch with the credit bureaus know that I have a police report number. Sigh, why do people have to do these things…

I’ve never been into goth anything. I am just a rocker chick. I
thought about Mad Madame, and Tokyo Milk Dark Bittersweet. I ended up asking my daughter what I should wear for Goth day. She said Kat Von D, duh. So I’m wearing KVD Sinner, current version. It shares similarities to Mad Madame and Narciso for her L’absolu. The Governor here opened retail by appointment only with ten people or less, starting tues. My manager said that he doubts we will do that, as it didn’t make sense for our store, but we haven’t officially heard yet.

To me, gothic is Byron, and the romantic period, cobwebs and ghosts. So I’ve chosen Tam Dao for the smells like an old cupboard effect.

Imagine an old dark house, with high ceilings and narrow corridors and an old cupboard standing in an empty room. Cobwebs brush the skin while the draw croaks in complaint of being opened. It smells like gentle wood, dust and old paper.

It’s not quite fair to gothisize Tam Dao, because it smells not at all of dust or old paper. But I really didn’t feel like wearing the only other contender I could think of, which was Eau Capitale.

SOTD is a sample of Poesie Perfumes We Shall Be Monsters for the Goth choice.Notes are bitter almond, black licorice, graveyard dirt tinged with blood, green bite of galbanum and forbidden manuscripts. It is a spooky, earthy and green type of scent. The licorice note is not a sweet licorice. Not something I would wear on a daily basis but I appreciate it when I do wear it.

I have never really had a Goth period in my life but grew up where we could make ” I dare you to” late night visits to EA Poe’s grave. The graveyard reference looking back seems like a good Goth choice!

Not very gothic myself either, but EA Poe… One of his books of short stories crossed my path Somehow or another and I was fascinated. Love his weird tales, but too scared to go anywhere near his (or anyone’s) grave alone at night ?

Hi guys! I had such a busy week, hardly any time to read or comment here. ?

I am wearing The Black Knight
    By Francesca Bianchi

It smells very gothic to me.
(I used to hang out with some goths now and then when i was young)

The orris evokes the makeup/powder vibe . There is some leather in this (yes some of them wore leather chokers, leather jackets and sometimes even leather pants) and i also smell beeswax….(for the candles Goths seem to be fond of ?)
Oh and the notes also mention artemisia…yup there is the absinthe connection.
    Pretty gothic right?

I think there is a bit of a goth in me
I love dark red lipstick, creepy movies and dark scary literature, and i am totally loving the puffed sleeves trend you see everywhere right now.

Some of my fav writers for gloomy dreamy scary stuff are
        Neil Gaiman
        Angela Carter
Margaret Atwood (i only read a few short stories and the Handmaid’s tale)
        HP Lovecraft

But I for really really dark and scary stuff i just read history books or news papers. Sorry. ?

I also love graphic novels…. these are a bit gothic i guess: Monstress, Unwritten, Locke & key

Sorry, that should be 40s! Also, Shirley Jackson …fantastic. I also like the Scottish poet/ written John Burnside ( Devil’s Footsteps , Glister) though not sure he would be called Gothic. And Eleanor Catton The Luminaries is dark and rich, kind of Gothic. Not gothic but gothic-inspired is Frankisstein by Jeanette Winterson. Also…Japanese writers give good unsettling /gothic-like stories…Murakami’s The Strange Library is short and good. A favourite would be Woman of the Dunes but creepy more than gothic. Maybe Mervyn Peake and Shirley Jackson for starters?

I will never forget, in 4th or 5th grade, my teacher reading us Shirley Jackson’s The Lottery.

I also distinctly remember a short story (author I do not recall) about a woman who snaps, beats her husband to death with a frozen leg of lamb, cooks it, then feeds it to the cops investigating his death.

The third book from this class, that I recall, was about a plague that wiped out all the adults, so the kids and tweens had to band together to secure food and defend themselves against other kid gangs.

My teacher was a real grandmotherly type. Realizing she clearly had a dark side!

Thanks for reminding me i need to start reading Peake. ?

Shirley jackson is great as well, i only read the Haunting of Hill House so far.

And I have read 6 or 7 Murakami’s, his stories can be a bit unsettling.

Btw. The Korean movie Burning is a fantastic Murakami adaption. I really recommend that movie.

      Especially music,
Cure, sisters of mercy, dead can dance NIN….. And Nick cave is my hero (btw he married THE GOTH TOP MODEL Susie Bick)
because he is developing and changing his musical style while still being so recognisable Nick. I feel so sorry for what happened to his son.
The documentary ‘One more time with feeling’ is heartbraking, but a must see for every music lover….

I was a bit of a punk back in the day, and never followed through into goth, but there were some great bands that people have mentioned, and there was some awesomely dressed goths around town a few years back.
I’ve got a few suitably dark perfumes, but will wear a new sample instead – Bois Sacré from Arte Profumi, which I got with my recent stupidly-expensive-but-it-was-on-sale purchase of Velvet Rouge.

A very sad, brooding song, Cult by Skinny Puppy

My favorite of theirs was probably Smothered Hope:

And to top it off Brooding Woman, by Picasso:

The use of watercolor in the painting, goodness.

Ok, this was my most depressing post ever haha.

Didn’t go full goth back in the day but did play some Vampire : The Masquerade with my friends… Live-action role playing was as far down the rabbit hole as I was willing to go with my endlessly quirky social set from high school, because at least it was somewhat active.

Definitely had a teenaged photoshoot in a graveyard with my friend though. She styled me with a guitar and white dress and everything. She’s still a photographer and a university professor in the field tho. Man I wish I knew where I’d put those photos!

As goth as I’m going to get in Jorum Studios Nectary today, rose and oud and ambergris!

It’s fighting an infelicitous battle with the braised chicken in the oven though. The chicken smells delicious (braising in coconut milk loaded with lemongrass, garlic, ginger, Thai chili, soy sauce and fish sauce) but it is powerful!

I am going to do a kind of NZ Gothic inspired by the film The Piano and the book/series The Luminaries. So, a dark and dripping bush-clad strip of land squeezed in between a wild coast on one side and steep hills on the other. Women who have travelled to the end of the world with trappings of “civilisation”: long dresses, music, books …dark secrets, dark interiors, strange sounds, shadowy characters. Matching with Hyde.

    I got my goth on!

This caps off my patch week too although I may do one more tomorrow. 8 sprays!

The work I was supposed to do this morning got derailed before it got to my small working group. It had to go back to the drawing board with involvement by someone one heartbeat away from the CEO. Meanwhile, we already did part of the work and they now have to think about how to walk things back. Oy! Work deferred to Monday.

In other news, I haven’t been to Costco in 3 months and I literally just downgraded my membership from Executive to regular since I wasn’t spending enough to justify the extra cost of the higher tier membership (and I actually got back the difference between the extra cost and the rebate so it came out to no extra cost). Anyway, I did EPIC shopping today. My cart was filled to the brim, including the bottom of the cart. Costco did a great job with the logistics. Costco set aside one side of the parking lot and had people with their carts line up within the parking lanes (8 per back to back parking lanes) and one lane at a time was released when there was room on the outside perimeter (one side of the structure). When 4 lanes emptied out, the outer lanes rolled over to the first 4 lanes. All told, my wait was under 10 minutes. Inside, there were no traffic jams and the checkout line was reasonable. There were no empty shelves and there was plenty of TP although I had to get a different brand than what I’m used to. The next time I’ll go is when printer ink is on sale as I am all stocked up.

Song of the day = “Lucretia My Reflection” by The Sisters of Mercy. I have a few of their CD’s in my collection.

It’s turned into a rainy day here. On the plus side, it seems that we need the moisture… one of the local meteorologists mentioned that it’s about 2 inches below on precip here. I’ll still try to send some of it over The Pond to Aurora and Austenfan.

On the minus side, it means that the roofers did not replace my roof today. So I still have that to “look forward to”.

Confession time: my latest perfume purchase arrived about 10 minutes ago. It’s a 1 oz bottle of Mon Guerlain EdT. The lavender note in that is sufficiently different to my nose from the Burberry Brit Rhythm for Her that I went ahead and purchased it. So if that was your guess, lillyjo, you were right!

SOTD = Atelier Cologne Rose Anonyme, from the perfume stash. ? Whoever called this “goth light” earlier in the week is spot on. This is also one of the perfumes that I put on and think “Why don’t I wear this more often? So good!” I just wasn’t up for the all-out Goth selections I had picked out today: Aromatics Elixir, Magie Noir, or Niki de Saint Phalle.

I had total forgotten about Black Phoenix Alchemy Labs but it fits perfectly with goth. Unfortunately, though I wanted to like the perfumes, they just did not do it for me.

I almost picked By Killian Back to Black but I think the perfume itself is not really goth, though the name is.

I am wearing Comme des Garcons Avignon. The packaging and the scent is goth to me. When I first bought this as a sample, I did not get it at all. Now I love it and reach for it very often.

I did a whole goth week and I think I didn’t post even once. I could have been a goth in another life. But, you know, corsets, and limited job opportunities. I suppose that means I lack imagination. Oh well.
Monday – Bvlgari Black, because black. and rubbery.
Tuesday – Serge Noire – the gothiest incense I have; I know, what about Avignon? well, I don’t have it. Also Serge Noire doesn’t care if you don’t like him, just like a goth
Wednesday – L’Heure Bleu – nothing smells more like la belle epoque and I should be in a giant brocade dress and corset with a parasol and pointy boots
Thursday – Anubis, death, leather, and Egypt
Today – the last of my vintage Parfum Sacre. So completely inappropriate for the spring weather. I do not get a church vibe from it like I do from Avignon, it’s like church made wrong somehow…which of course makes it perfect for goth life.

Have a lovely weekend, + Monday if your’e in the US.
