Wednesday scent of the day 5/13

Posted by Robin on 13 May 2020 288 Comments

Hump Day and World Cocktail Day, plus a very happy birthday to Stevie Wonder! What fragrance are you wearing?

My fragrance family for the rest of the week: new wave summer colognes. Today I'm in Guerlain Mandarin Basilic.

Reminder: 5/15 is the International Day of Families. Name your favorite fragrance family, and wear one or more fragrances in that family, OR, make up your own fragrance family (like, say, wood pudding), define it for us, and wear the best example of that family.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Hope it turned out! I cooked a new recipe tonight as well: lamb tagine, though I don’t have a tagine so just did it in a dutch oven. Plus, not enough lamb so did half beef.

Ehh, it’s okay but lacking some oomph. Too watery, and I used only 4 cups vs the requested 6. I’ll do some more recipe research and keep tweaking!

This Shalimar is the vanille flanker, forgot to add.
I wore this one for our date night (at home) on Saturday and Mr L, who has no sense of smell, said to me ‘wow you smell good’
Are you reading this Guerlain. Must. Bring. Vanille flanker. Back.

Well, I made tuna casserole. It is nostalgic comfort food for both of us, and low-stress to make, but won’t win any medals for daring or for international flair.

I think these days its just comforting and sexy, all at the same time.

Starting today in Bottega Veneta Bottega Veneta. After doing a bunch of sampling, felt the need for a known (loved) quantity.

Beaufort London Iron Duke yesterday was scrubber territory. Has some super strong wood note that overpowers all else for my nose. Wood isn’t listed, but a review mentioned oud as a possibility.

I think my problem with woods mostly arises when used in concentration. Because there are plenty of scents in the “woody” category our with wood supporting notes that I like. Trying to pin this down is so hard!

MONDAY: Chanel Cuir de Russie, Naomi Goodsir Cuir Velours, Memo Moroccan Leather
TUESDAY: Knize Ten, J.F. Schwarzlose Berlin Leder 6, Molinard Cuir, ELDO Tom of Finland, Beaufort London Iron Duke

Happy hump day! I haven’t decided on my fragrance family but happily wearing SSS Winter Woods today – from a lovely NST perfumista – yay!

Ironically, Wednesdays were always my one day per week to work from home and today I’m driving into the office for the first time in over two months. Just a brief stop (with mask!) to pick up plants/clothes/files/tidy desk. It will feel a little odd. I don’t expect anyone else to be there. On the plus side, parking is free for a bit.

I guess my fragrance family this week has been “Easy Like A Sunday Morning” . It started with Monday, Chanel No 5 and then Tuesday, AG Nuit Etoilee. And now with Chasse aux Papillons today. These fragrances are not “in my face”, just easy to wear and easy to love — for me, at least :)

Love the category and La Chasse. Chanel No5 has never been easy for me, I always feel like it wears me rather than the other way around even if it smells sooo beautiful.

I agree on No. 5 and La Chasse, but I haven’t tried Nuit Etoilee. I think i should make it a priority!
I should say, , I struggled with No 5 until I hit 40, then suddenly I NEEDED it.

Woke up bathed in vintage BaV but I am in LADDM post shower. My friend and I decided to hold off getting together on Friday. Too many people got up in arms on his side. We both got a little annoyed with that. Looking at Tauer offerings on Luckyscent right now.

Still doing spring scents here. Yesterday was Vilhelm A Lilac A Day. Today is Eric Buterbaugh Apollo Hyacinth, which I adore.

We’re scheduled to get a fighter jet flyover around 11am. One of my neighbors posted the info on our community FB group and specifically tagged another neighbor who routinely has a FB spaz about airplane noise but somehow can’t tell the difference between a single 737 and an entire squadron of fighter jets, lol. Maybe if she looked out the window…

Hey Pixel! I’ve been meaning to email you to check in. So funny about the flyover. It was quite loud here in dingley dell. My younger son came running down the stairs wanting to know what on earth was all that racket. I didn’t know about the scheduled flight, but it was definitely fighter jets. Makes me feel like we are neighbors :-)

SotAM = Guerlain Cologne du Parfumeur
SotPM = Prada Infusion d’Amande is on deck for later today.

I woke up this morning thinking of Cologne du Parfumeur. It’s fun when that happens.

CdP has a dry-herbal-green note that is a surprise every time I wear it. Some reviews say it’s rosemary, some say grass. For me it’s sage, a smell I often encounter while hiking. Sage grows wild around here. :D

I will go for a hike one day soon. The trails near me have opened. I’m not sure how I feel about that. I want to get out, but I wonder how mobbed the trail areas will be after a couple months closed.

Monday was L’air du Temps, Tuesday was CBIHP Tea Rose Water perfume, today is a straight up cologne. Something tells me my perfume family for the community project is colognes and cologne-adjacent perfumes.

    In other silly news:

Breakfast was oatmeal + oat milk + frozen blueberries with a cup of sturdy Twinings Irish Breakfast tea to warm me up.

It’s cold this morning, but I refuse to run the furnace in May. The sun will heat up the house very soon.

I’m obsessing about Hermes scarves again. Thank you, Dr. Birx, for keeping things classy:

I pushed my exhausted self through an hour of yoga yesterday, and it paid off in boosted energy today! Time to git-a-move-on.

Hope everyone finds a moment of peace/calm/rest/joy/whatever you need today. And don’t touch your face! :D

I have discovered that I literally can’t avoid touching my face short of tying my hands behind my back. Argh.

I have also discovered that if it is cold in May, I am going to turn on the heat every single day! My lame excuse: the sun does not warm up my stone house fast enough. More truthful: it makes me mad to have to bundle up inside in May.

We might go for a hike this afternoon, as it’s supposed to warm up, but if not hopefully I will copy your yoga workout!

same for me, the last time I went food shopping I kept count and touched my face THREE TIMES, at least that’s how many I noticed. Ugh.

Hope you enjoyed an outdoor afternoon warm up with hiking, or maybe warm indoor yoga! I decided to bike today, I’ll save the hiking trails for next week.

Its sunny but quite chilly here at the moment…at night temps even drop to freezing point ?

Yup Indian food is so good!

In the Netherlands lots of people associate roti with Surinam kitchen.
But it arrived in Surinam when Hindu Indians migrated there. ?

When Dutch people say, ‘we eat roti’, we mean a whole meal (bread including the potatoes, greens and proteins).

Nicest day we have had this week. Yesterday I wore La Chasse de Papillions, and it was lost in the cold. Today, I over compensated with a liberal 5 sprays of Memo Sham’s Oud, which sometimes seems so smoky I am not sure I like it, but today, I am happy in a perfume I continue to be aware of as the day wafts on, and I have all those associations with Oud as being health protective, so I am good. It is warmer today, I mulched some more of my blueberry bushes at noon (only 9 left to go, and the buds are starting to split all pink and pretty, so the bushes I worked on were not hit too hard by the frost last week.) Working from home is great – I can DO something over my lunch hour…

I’m still doing my series of non-stewed-fruit Serge perfumes, wearing Nuit de Cellophane today. It does have fruit (mandarin orange) but it’s more fresh, not stewed, light not heavy, and no spices (only some almond). I experience the osmanthus the most of all the florals. It’s just another example of the more light and clear kind of category that he can be good at when he tries. I’m also avoiding all the sandalwood ones (I think I have three or four actually of those!–including some very old Mysore Sandalwood).
My adventure for today will be picking up my bag of goodies from the local co-op. It’s mostly vegetables but I also ordered some duck eggs, just for fun!

My NSFW (not safe for work) perfume of the day is Dior Oud Ispahan. I finished off the small decant I’ve had for years, yay! I’m not sure if this has been reformulated, but this decant was made back in 2013-2014 from an early batch of bottles. I like it more than I expected to, but I don’t need any more. It’s rose with smoky oud and patchouli, and it’s STRONG.

Been meaning to comment about Zoologist Bat and Sloth that I got samples of and tried the weekend before last. I wasn’t really impressed with either of them, and just sniffing the sample of Sloth made me not want to put it on my skin. Luckily, out didn’t smell the same on skin, but I didn’t really get a clear scent from it. It felt muddled. I also found the dry down of both perfumes to be quite similar (they’re from the same perfumer). They were slightly traditionally masculine fuzzy dry downs and reminded me a bit of Gris Clair. Sadly, neither was remarkable or compelling. Still looking forward to trying Bee soon. Luckyscent was sold out of samples when I orderd a few weeks ago.

I liked the other new one that I didn’t ever expect to, Squid, but no one else does! I thought Sloth was in the green category a bit like Elephant but Elephant is way more juicy and pungent, and I prefer it. Sloth did feel a bit murky.

I mostly liked Squid when I tried it, but it really put my boyfriend off. He doesn’t object to many of my perfumes, so I figured I shouldn’t pursue it any further than a sample. Really too bad especially with the fun blue color of the juice and the squid character on the bottle.

Murky is a good way to describe Sloth.

I agree with your assessment of Sloth. You must have been sampling the new Bat rather than the old Ellen Covey one. I’d like to get the new one to compare, just for S&Gs, but not too motivated… less so with your comparison to Sloth.

I do like the old Bat, which for anyone who missed this news is now available from Olympic Orchids as “Night Flyer”.

Yes, definitely speaking of new Bat! I don’t think anyone could say the original Bat isn’t compelling! It has so much to say and you would never confuse it with a different perfume. My disclaimer is that I worked for Ellen Covey/Olympic Orchids for 3.5 years and got very familiar with that Bat. I may have been predisposed towards the old Bat, and I did enjoy the top notes of the new one. However, the mid-base notes fell flat on me.

Remember the neighbor I mentioned who mowed the dirt in his front yard and then planted things in a couple thousand little holes? I walked past this weekend to see him sitting on the dirt, holding a cordless drill with a brush attachment. He was brushing the dirt. I am seriously wondering about his mental health. If I see him again I think I’ll ask what he’s doing with his yard.

How do you like Sortiledge? I found an old bottle at an antiques fair but the top notes are off. The scent is beautiful once I get past the top notes. If wishes were fishes, I’d love a perfectly preserved bottle of Arpege. I also love Jolie Madame.

It is very well blended, with ylang at the start. That’s what I can identify at first dabbing. Any aldehydes that existed are gone. I have what I think is an old mini of Arpege, and it has more amber than the Sortilege.
It is very pretty, very rich and lasted six hours on my skin.

I understand how you feel about Arpege. The little bit of the old formulation I have is just so magical!

My poor Mr. Teebear is lamenting his waistline a bit more of late with my cornucopia of carb – but my body runs primarily on carbs, so it can’t stop ? I’ll buy more fruit when I get groceries again and try to place them somewhere more immediately accessible than the baked goodies.

Drained my decant of BK’s Amber Oud. I think that was an extra someone tossed into a swap. I would never think to test a By Killian Oud–but goodness this one is addictive. I have enough ambery scents at the moment, so not in the market. But, if those rich ambery ouds are your thing, it is definitely worth trying.

My NST reading lately has been spotty, so perhaps y’all discussed this already–but my most recent 30% at Twisted Lily email had a note at the bottom that said, “And don’t worry. SOTD = Maison Lancôme Haute Parfumarie Paris Iris Dragees

Yes, from the same birthplace as LVEB, only with a more high falutin’ pedigree.

    https://www.instagram.com/p/CAIvYQ-h6M7/?igshid=1ej2lk3i1nb0v

Make sure to read my pet peeve. I did not mention on IG but I’m mentioning here that I had to label the bottle since I have several in the same size and equally illegible text.

In other news, I don’t recall mentioning that this last Sunday, I decided to dip my toe in to using a grocery delivery service. I landed on using Instacart and chose Costco from which to purchase stuff (because they have flour in stock!). Of course I added a few things here and there and before I knew it, BAM, order sent. The estimated delivery was May 10-11 … so imagine my surprise when I got a text saying “Anthony” is now shopping for me and then 15 minutes later, Anthony is in his way to deliver! Wow, talk about underpromise / overdeliver. There was an InstaCart Fee as well as a delivery fee and a tip but when I did the math, it was worth it to not drive there, stand in line to go in and pay and have to drive home. I know it won’t be this perfect every time but I’m glad to have tried it for future reference.

Lancôme by any other name is still Lancôme. Iris Dagrees is from the higher end line of Lancôme but it is not spectacular and should just be branded Lancome, just like LVEB. They don’t smell at all alike, in my opinion.

Holding myself accountable for what I said yesterday and am wearing St. Clair Scents Pandora and Eve – I just now applied one eensy squirt per arm as I recalled that they are quite potent. I searched for the previous four (First Cut, Gardener’s Glove, Frost and Casablanca) to no avail – they’re either nestled somewhere random or I passed them on during one of my massive shareathons.
I hope everyone is having a peaceful day!

Pulled out some scents from the cabinet to put on my round mirrored plate atop and boxed up and out others back in the cabinet, as I rearranged, I decided to spray OJ Woman, which I haven’t worn in FOREVER. Not since I oversprayed in a small apartment that one time. Think I’ll wear this more often.

And, I decided a walk was in order. So…I walked down to the Trader Joe’s, which is about 1.25 miles away. Figured if it was easy to go in, I would. Well, it was easy. Walked most of the way home with my two bags and backpack, but a bus came so rode the last 10 blocks (which were uphill). First time on a bus in two months.

I am trying so hard to conjure up the perfect scent for me to choose now for 2 days running… i have to confess that I almost blind bought SMN Peau d’espagne but chickened out.i have burned too often in my BB’s.
So I think iI will reach for Cuir de Lancôme and maybe Cuir Beluga decant to see if that scratches my itch. This is getting realllllly old.
    Happy cocktail day.

Maybe a few samples of the SMN scents that you’re curious about would scratch the itch? You can always buy them after sampling and you can enjoy the anticipation.

Thanks Petunia, I did try @ Aedes and they are out of stock! I wonder how much perfume purchasing we are contributing to the consumer spending. Funerie is also quite busy. I hope to try it soon and have others to distract me. In the mean time.

Continuing my Whimsy theme with AA Flora Nymphea. This perfume makes me think of fairies, spring, moss and flowers. It’s a whimsical scent for me. ?‍♀️?‍♂️

I saw your earlier post. I’ve been watching old Steve Martin videos on YT. He makes me laugh. I think we all need a good laugh in these times.

I didn’t have a solid idea for this week, so it took a couple days of Nuit de Tubereuse (my best weirdest tuberose frag), some heavy-duty internet reading about fragrance families) and trying to figure out what family it was in (jury’s still out, best guess, floral oriental?) and decided on just the family “tuberose bombs” this week. I have some samples to use up.
Sun, Mon, Tues – Nuit de Tubereuse, because I wanted to. Tues pm: La Chasse au Papillons from a drench, I mean splash, mini.
Today, Do Son, the last of a sample; pretty but not me (an evil Melon rears its head) then Love Tuberose, the last of that sample, lovely, closer but not me (it’s too pretty)
Unfortunately I am out of Fracas so I can’t blow the doors off Friday, but I’ve got some other heavy-hitters ?

World Cocktail Day and all the bars are closed lol. A watermelon daiquiri sounds like something I would want to try. Last cocktail I had was for my birthday a while back and it was a Godiva chocolate martini, sooo good.

Sotd, Gucci Memoire..it’s nice when a breeze blows and you say to yourself, “Oh my, what smells so good? Oh, that’s me!” I got a sweet, spicy note that smelled of baked goods..realized it was my fume.

Also got a liter of hand sanitizer lol so I guess I am good. It leaked pretty good on shipment, however.

    Perfect weather today, mid80s:).

A couple restaurants near me are doing curbside cocktails with dinner orders…I assume you add your own liquor at home?

I don’t drink enough hard liquor to warrant full bottle purchases in my mind. It just won’t get used up. And my friends at the moment don’t drink much or at all. So, I wouldn’t even really need it for guests. If I get booze for the home, it’s usually a white wine, like a chardonnay. As far as cocktails themselves, I prefer them in a bar or outdoor patio setting:). I like the experience of the bartender shaking it all up and makin it all pretty like:). Cocktails can be pretty pricey though, especially in this town. I do plan on trying the absinthe experience that a local casino has when it reopens. It looks so cool with the sugar cube on fire and everything, plus, I love black licorice so I think I would like it:).

Coty Vanilla Musk. It’s 1995, and I’m young and broke living on South Beach. Skipping down Ocean Drive in cut offs, a baby tee, and bare feet. I sensed someone to my left looking intently at me. It was Gianni Versace leaning on the gate of Casa Casuarina smiling in amusement. I said “Good morning Mr Versace!” And he responded with “Hey! Bon Giorno !”. We waved and I skipped away. I didn’t stop, because it was an unwritten rule on the beach that you didn’t pester Mr Versace, who walked the streets often. After his death, people wondered why he didn’t wall himself up, he would have been safer. Mr Versace was smarter than we are. He knew living a full, free, joyful life was better than a long, fearful one. Something to think about today.
