Friday scent of the day 1/3

Posted by Robin on 3 January 2020 259 Comments

It's Friday and the 10th day of Christmas (lords a-leaping). Our community project for today: wear a fragrance to match Classic Blue, Pantone's color of the year for 2020.

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I tried to find a very old sample of Penhaligon's Bluebell, but no dice. I went with Kenzo Air.

Reminder: on 1/10, wear a fragrance by Ormonde Jayne, Olivier Durbano, Odin New York or Olfactive Studio, if you have one. Partial credit for any other small-ish brand that starts with the letter O.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Happy new year to you all!
I’ll be honest I was struggling with today’s project until last night when I opened up the fumedrobe and finally saw the answer right there in front of me. So I’m wearing L’Heure Bleue, Guerlain.

Ditto. But it’s just my sample, this one is not really “me,” so no bottle.

I struggled with the colour as did BobH and oddly enough I came up with the same solution. I’m wearing the beautiful and radiant L’Heure Bleue which might just be my favourite Guerlain.

OMG i am still in pyjamas (its almost 4 PM here) 😂
i slept in and now I am watching Gomorra season 4

I Will probably be wearing something from a blue bottle for this week’s CP

Isnt the blue from the Eau de Narcisse bleu bottle a bit like that pantone colour?

My chai is good this morning..I think I need to give him a bigger thermos, one cup is not enough!
My FIL is turning 71 this weekend, we will take him to lunch and we got him and my MIL tickets to Jersey Boys as well. I like to get out and about this weekend regardless, since its the anniversary of my fathers passing. I always feel melancholy, Songes helps!

In Guerlain L’Heure Bleue which for me evokes all the blue shades, from the lightest to the darkest one, not specifically the Pantone’s Classic Blue. As much as I like the name, inspiration and bottle of this perfume, once again I realize that no matter how many times I go back to it, I only like the opening. After that it is quite difficult for me to wear it. To the “good bye pile” the sample goes once again!

Count me in as another for whom this scent does not work, at all. When I first began reading about fragrances on the internet years ago, I fell in love with L’Heure Bleu based upon everything I read about it. For my birthday that year, I took myself to Nordie’s to test it – and, presumably, treat myself to a bottle – and I’ll never forget my intense disappointment at how much I disliked it! Since then I’ve tried it several times and, nope, it’s not for me. More for those who love it!

I blind bought a full bottle of L’Heure Bleue many years ago, based on the description and the reviews. I dreamt about it for a long time. I didn’t like it at all from the very first spray. I finally fell deeply in love with the gorgeous opening, but that was it. The rest doesn’t work for me. I still hope that some day I might be able to love it in full. For now that doesn’t seem to happen.

AdV’s Copal Azur for many reasons, primarily the color, the color of the bottle, the perfume and the feeling it exudes. It is my top 5.

It’s a lovely powerful perfume. It opens strong with Iris, apple, earth & green and then the lavender joins in and it settles down nicely. There are floral notes generally and some lovely wood again with them and light apple is still present but now I really smell the honey and it is very comfy. I am no expert but it feels very true to the note list.
I literally saw it walk in the front door as I was typing (via hubby) so I don’t know anything about the dry down yet.
I will say it only requires 1 or 2 spritzes.
I chose this one as I was moved by his description on line and it felt so authentic to me. All 3 sound very interesting – I had to honor Mother Earth.

I got nuthin’ for the CP today. The color blue is a bit too cold for my needs. So, it’s Gourmand Coquin on a cloudy, somewhat rainy day.

It’s also a bit of a snoozefest here. Was in bed a long time but slept fitfully, which is my usual in the early stages of a cold. Today is all about the throat. Sore and croaky. Have already cancelled the dinner plans we had.

So much for my determination to not get sick by avoiding people. Problematic when the husband is out and about….and bringing home any number of plagues…. maybe I’ll finish that knitting project today.

Awww! Sorry you’re not feeling well. Sadly, I’m a cold twin with you. Felt it come on New Year’s Eve, and stayed home from work today.
Like you, I tried to avoid all the sick folks at work but somehow the germs jumped on me.

Woke up in the middle of the night so I’ve been up for hours. Binge watching Dr Pol now. Hope we both feel better soon!

I was pretty sure the germ culprit was the guy who got on my fairly empty bus with loads of open seats and decided he had to sit right next to me, sniffling and coughing. I knew right then I was done for, lol.

I chose Rising Phoenix’s heavenly Blue Lotus Attar.
Like some others, I struggled to match a perfume with this color. Honestly, I don’t particularly like this shade of blue and for me it doesn’t evoke what Pantone intends it to. I coulda gone with blue bottles – Je Reviens, Niki de Saint Phalle, Tauer, Hiris, or the name – Olivier Dubrano’s Lapis Lazuli, Blue Grass, L’Heuere Bleue, Copal Azur, etc etc. What this color reminds me of is the tiles in mosques, and so I chose a contemplative and other-worldly fragrance to transport me to that kind of space.

Happy New Year honey! I know you’re familiar with some of JK’s stuff, and this bears the same signature style. Here are the listed ingredients:

        2019 Thai Blue Lotus Absolute
        2017 Omani Frank Special Reserve
        2019 Kush Myrrh
        2019 Mysore Deep and Buttery
        Cambodi Oud Reserve
        Socotoran Ambergris

Since you’re familiar with frankincense, myrrh, sandalwood, oud and ambergris, here’s Ayala Moriel’s description of blue lotus: “a sheer, light woody-floral, nutty, musky, aquatic/watery, subtle, slightly green, refreshing, hyacinth-like, violet-like, sweet-aromatic, clear, light, effervescent, ephemeral.” I’d add that on its own, it is slightly spicy and narcotic in the way that hyacinths are. The history of the use of blue lotus is fascinating!

Encens et Lavande, my best attempt at matching Classic Blue. Based on the Pantone decryption calling it a reflective color, I thought of incense perfumes plus the lavender I mentioned yesterday. A calming scent was a good idea for a busy Friday at work.

I had no idea what perfumes would go with 2019’s color, living coral, but I thought it was a very pretty color, and had meaning. Blue was easier to match, but I agree with the commenters above who feel that it’s not a particularly nice shade.

Sometime in the early evening: Tried a sample of The Different Company’s I Miss Violet. That one struck me as a cold violet. I still have Violetas Francescas (sp?) splash cologne from some years ago when I shopped at a Mexican grocery in Delaware every so often, and Royal Violet cologne, plus various samples of violet fragrances. I go for the sweeter fragrances (of course). But I’m glad I tried the sample, so I know.

For those who wished me a safe flight home, thank you! I arrived home around 9pm. As to drama-free, that’s another story. We got to the airport so early we had a lot of time to walk around. The gate printed on the boarding pass was 36 but, unbeknownst to me (although I would have checked at least an hour before) was changed . I lucked out seeing fellow travelers walking towards a different direction. About 20 minutes before boarding, we lined up to turn in the 2nd half of a visa. A guy came running by cursing the change in gates and how there was no announcement and he was at gate 36 for quite a while. A fellow traveler said there were 4 announcements. The guy told her she was lying and kept muttering about how it always happens at this particular airport. He also made a comment that he thought she lied but because she’s old, she is always right and this is why the U.S. had gone to shreds. We wisely just left it alone because 1) he was clearly inebriated 2) he was possibly on some type of drug and 3) hello, if it ALWAYS happens at this airport, shouldn’t he have been more alert to a change? Whatever. The other drama was a passenger who originally had an exit row seat but due to the assistance during an emergency expected of a passenger seated at exit rows, he would not have qualified due to his size. He ended up at my row (I had the window seat), with a guy in the middle seat built like a football player who had gone soft (I believe they knew each other). Before takeoff, a flight attendant came by and said that due to the logistics of the snack cart, would he mind moving to a seat at the back of the plane. He asked if the middle seat was empty (it was) and agreed to move. I was hoping this meant that the guy next to me would be able to move to the aisle seat, but no such luck. I just decided to take this in stride because the plane was full and there really was not another seat and if I complain, it would just foster animosity; however, if I had the seat next to him, I would have asked to move elsewhere because the arm rest had to be lifted and he spilled over to at least half of the middle seat – I would have objected vehemently to this because I paid for a seat, not half of one. In any case, I suppose there really is no way for an airline to know if accommodations may be required unless the passenger volunteers the info.

BTW, I will continue to post pictures on IG and will include links when it makes sense.

Despite how much fun it was to be on vacation, I am glad to be back! I have a busy weekend ahead and I am happy to be home today to recover.

I’m so glad it’s Friday: working after holidays/vacation/being sick (all together :( ) seems especially tiring.

I thunked a decant of Hiris but I have a blue bottle backup. It was chosen solely for the bottle color but I keep forgetting how very nice the fragrance is.

The sun keeps going in and out of the clouds but it’s not raining, so I’m going outside for a bit, the next week is supposed to be all rain, but snow in the mountains, yay! Ski season starts for me on Thursday and there should be a couple feet of new snow. Skiers native to this area refer to it as “Cascade cement” but I learned to ski on the mud, ice, and rocks of Vermont, so anyplace that has the bushes covered up is heaven to me.

Enjoy your skiing and I hope you get a good dump of snow. We had interesting photos of our glaciers and alps the other day…all a pinky caramel colour instead of white because they are covered in ash from Australia. It is predicted the ash cover will speed melting of the glaciers over the summer as it captures heat rather than reflecting it ( as bright white would)

CDG Blue Cedrat ( from off-site storage, yesterday) a nice citrus, juniper, cedar for summer. I tried Blue Encens as well , which is a decent summer incense. When I get up I will wear Un Jardin de Nil for the Blue Nile
I was in Lush yesterday and they had some new perfumes in store: Pansy, 1000 Flowers, Love, Ginger ( I am guessing at the names as I have not checked them before commenting). They were okay but there was an element of sameness between them, or to previous Lush perfumes in my collection.

The funny thing was that yesterday I got better service in the posh designer shop that sells CDG than I usually do. As I was leaving I looked down and noticed I had my black dog-walking jersey on inside out, with the seams showing ( no labels as it iwas second hand when I bought it, with the labels cut out). I suspect the assistant noticed my holed, laddered, seamed jersey and probably assumed it was vintage Martin Margiela

          That’s a great story! I think you’re right!

When ripped, hole-y clothes first appeared in stores I remember seeing a sweater on the top of a pile thinking it looked like a cat had attacked it. Then as I flipped through the pile I noticed the damage was indentical to each sweater which made me think, gee – that cat is really talented!

Kanuka, I just came back from Lush, and boy do I stink! I have every new one on me, and you are exactly right about how they smell. I will go back and smell them again, maybe 2 at time. I was happy to see Rose Jam in a perfume bottle instead of that body spray bottle.

I liked the Rose Jam body spray the one time I smelled it, but that bottle was just too much volume. Lush could get a lot more of my money if they had travel sprays for their perfumes.

Yes! I didn’t feel like I needed 6+ oz. of their more expensive body sprays, even if it’s relatively cheap per milliliter. But I would go for travel sprays of several of their fragrances.

I thought about blue bottles, I have some of the Thameen range which come in a lovely cube-shaped blue bottle, but the perfumes are so not blue to my nose. They are mkre about spices and wood, which say warm tones to me.
So it will be Hiris – blue bottle and blue iris.

I had planned on wearing Dylan Blue or Dior Addict. I went to Sephora though, and sprayed on Dior H’omme, because I was debating on getting a bottle before the new version comes out. If it stays on the shelf until February, I just might. In case anyone other than me was wondering how Black Opium Neon smells… it is a lighter version of the original. Cool bottle though.

Yeah, apparently a new version comes out this month and I don’t think it has any iris in it. Then the current version that we know will be repackaged as “original ” idk.. but seems dumb all the way around.

Grrrr… I’ve never forgiven them for the “Miss Dior” crap almost a decade ago. Or recently for “Joy” (Patou owns that, in my book.) And now Homme. Without iris. They’ve gone beyond the pale now.

So my dream perfume for today’s classic blue challenge would be Guerlain L’heure Bleue but as I remember it from 1979 and the bottle my parent’s brought back from Paris for me. I am instead wearing Esprit de Oscar which reminds me of this scent memory. I really should look for a vintage bottle of the Guerlain.

I only had to look at the color, read the description, ‘suggestive of the sky at dusk,’ and I didn’t have to think twice about my choice of scent for today’s cp, for it was already on my dresser as one of my favorite winter holiday fragrances. A little sweet from the cacao, a bit spicy from the ginger, soft and powdery from the iris yet with a fresh sparkle from its vodka note, its deep blue bottle and luscious scent of Bvlgari Blv Pour Femme – Fragrantica calls it ‘a sensual and mysterious scent of the night’ – is my choice for SOTD.

Also, according to Fragrantica, I did not know this scent was d/c, so I will treasure my bottle, which I only bring out during the winter holidays, and I also did not know it contained a tobacco blossom – nicotiana – note, another reason to love this fragrance. My favorite night-blooming flower, nicotiana scent my summer night-time garden, where they self-seed and grow even more abundantly each year.

Blv Notte Pour Femme mirrors the quiet and peaceful New Year we’ve had thus far and I think I’ll keep it as my fragrance for the remainder of the last of this holiday weekend, hoping to maintain the zen as long as possible. Wishing peace and beauty to all this weekend!

    SotD = Hiris

Because “Yes to Hermes!” and my blue bottle came to mind as soon as Robin mentioned Pantone Classic Blue a week or so ago.

And Hiris feels like a blue scent to me.

Will go to bed wafting L’Heure Bleue tonight. Thank you to everyone for the inspiration.

Like for many, L’Heure Bleue was my most obvious choice, but I wasn’t in the mood for it (and rarely am).
I went with Lavande Velours today because it smells richly saturated like the blue color, and I thought the Pantone shade would be lovely in velvet 🤷‍♀️

I went with both a note match and a colored bottle match for today’s CP.

SOTD = Dior Midnight Poison. The bottle sure looks like the color swatch at the top of the page, and the camphor note does smell “blue” to me. I think it has something to do with childhood memories of Vick’s Vapo-Rub…

Very much so. No tuberose in Midnight at all. On me it is a bit of bergamot and camphor for top notes, and amber plus patchouli the rest of the time. Other folks get a rose note, but I never have. This one is unisex, and sadly discontinued.
