Friday scent of the day 9/27

Posted by Robin on 27 September 2019 268 Comments

It's Flavortown Friday! (And don't forget, tomorrow is Freebiemeet Saturday.) Our community project for today: wear a scent that you associate with one of the five basic tastes (sweet, sour, salty, umami or bitter). Triple bonus points for starting on Monday and doing all 5. Thank you to Regina for the idea!

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I'm taking triple bonus points in Hermès Brin de Réglisse.

Reminder: 10/4 is World Animal Day...do what you like with the theme.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Happy Friday! I will be wearing Tom Ford Black Orchid when I get home after a haircut this morning. Is it savory? It’s big, dark and gorgeous, to me, anyway.

Black Orchid has a GIGANTIC truffle note on my skin. It absolutely counts for umami!

I’m wearing a healthy smudge of Lush All Good Things solid, which starts out with an incredibly bright and vivid pineapple (which is not listed in the notes). It lasts for ages, though it’s gradually swamped by smoky/woody/resinous notes. Still: *so much sweet yummy pineapple!*

I don’t know why I have such poor luck with Lush solids. My skin must not be warm enough or something.

Sometimes the solids start out a little slowly on me, but then I notice them more. I like jasmine, but I can only take the fragrance from the solid version of Lush Lust for so long. I don’t know how I’d do with the perfume. I don’t know if I could take a stronger-than-the-solid version of Breath of God, either. I may have tried the cologne spray on paper at the Lush store at King of Prussia. I think my reaction would have been, “Whoa, strong!”

Over the last year and a half or so, I haven’t had to worry about being too cold. Instead, I ask the people around me if the room is hot, because I’ll suddenly feel terribly overheated. They tell me it’s just me. I’ve gotten medicine for that, but am still running very warm. Solid perfumes seem to melt very easily on my skin now. (And when Mom has cold hands, she can warm them up by touching my skin.
        lol)

I am taking ALL five points with St Clair Scents Eve on one wrist and Pandora on the other. They are so incredibly complex and so chock full of naturals that they morph over time on my skin and smell sweet, sour, salty, bitter and umami at various stages! I told Diane that I cannot pinpoint if they are gourmand, chypre, green or oriental. They are a class unto themselves and absolutely divine!

Also, non perfume related (and mostly for NYers) but I mentioned to OaklandF that I am going to see Antigone in the Park Ave Armory and in the Times today it got a critics pick

OaklandF has been enabler pins for recommending me Greek fiction books to read, so that is where the connection comes from

Apologies if I am wrong but was it you who really liked Pacifica Sandalwood? The Pacifica website has it 30 percent off as it is a discontinued scent. They also have solids of Persian Rose for the same percentage off as all the solids are discontinued as well.

I’m in Ummagumma for the “um” syllable, which is apparently as close to umami as I’m going to get. And it kind of fits the flavor profile … sort of. Well, not really, but I’m going to pretend it does. And maybe go order a bottle, because it’s goooood.

I think of you every time I wear it, Deva, because you were in serially-monogamous relationships with your fragrances for quite a while and Ummagumma was one in that series. I remember being awed that you were able to wear the same scent so many days running. I used to be able to, but now am too fickle. :)

Recovery day 1 after 3 days of adulting. Day 5 of Bengale Rouge. I think it’s love.

Giving a shout out to the post office here because I had a missing package, supposedly delivered yesterday. This morning when I went to pick it up, three people spent about about 20 minutes looking for it. They found it, and then apologized for my wait! What a fabulous group of postal workers. I think I’ll take them some bagels tomorrow morning in thanks.

    As JadainGa says, “Happy FriYAY!”

Si, for sweet, and completely haphazardly. Have been out sick since Tuesday, and today is the first day that I am starting to be able to smell anything. (For reference: had a hot bath Tuesday evening with a Rose Jam Bath Bomb, and smelled…nothing.) Found an unopened carded sample of Si in my bin. What I get right now is sweet candied pears. I cannot perceive any patchouli at all (maybe good, because I often have trouble with that note). Will be interesting to try this again once my faculties have recovered fully and compare.

Confession: bought it blind for $15 for 100ml. (I’ll have a lot to confess October 1st!). I’ve taken a while to warm to it, as it wasn’t as beachy as I expected. More pineapple and pond water, but it really has a nice dry down. I’m sure there are bottles floating around at mall kiosks and such.

Thanks! I just hate it when my body is betraying me. My daughter picks her sotd every morning. It’s fun for me to see what she chooses. Not long ago, she picked MJ Decadence and I said “only two sprays!!” So she sprayed twice on each wrist, neck and hair! ? I’m sure the bus driver was thrilled!

Spent the morning in Memoir today. All I have done so far today was doing the dishes and ordered some stuff from Ulta. I like Ulta much better than Sephora. Ulta has a better rewards program, more sales and coupons and the prices are better. Had to get my shampoo and hair conditioner (on sale) and there was a mini of the Too Faced Damn Girl mascara that was on sale that I want to try. Now it’s off to put a fancy hamper together that doubles as a seat together and shower. I think Frapin 1270 will be the SOTD.

I was looking at that too but I am still working on some of the eyeshadow palettes that I have. I don’t know why Urban Decay fooled around with the Naked line. Too many shimmery eyeshadows in their palettes. The Too Faced palettes are fabulous though.

I curently have a decant of the vintage EDT (1986), but I think I first tried this scent in the modern version and quite liked it. But it was three years ago, a small sample, so I am not 100% sure whether it was modern or vintage. Based on my notes, the sample was a crisp green aldehydic floral, while the vintage version has more oakmoss and generally smells more ‘mature’.

    Seattle Chocolate – bitter
    Amouse Bouche – sweet

Couple samples of Bengale Rouge because I’m a lemming…. Au Dela Narcisse because I remember liking it and wanted to try again. Hot Milk because that sounds interesting… they threw in Ithaka also.

Here’s the link for the yarn crawl. The places in Brooklyn look interesting. I think it’s a big deal. I may head uptown soon. https://yarncrawlnyc.com/

    Happy Friday guys!

    1) I am in Angel Food Cake body cream by Carol’s Daughter followed by Fresh Cream Warm Cashmere, so I smell subtly and warmly sweet and rather cuddly sexy.

1b) The body cream by Carol’s Daughter LAST AND LAST, and a little goes a long way, with no greasy afterfeel (to me). I think that they are an excellent value.

    2) Will need to cover the seedlings in the garden right after work: I saw my breath this morning when I stepped outside, and we will get a low of 39F (4C) this weekend- a little to close to frost for me!

Nobile 1942 Le Petite Chocolatier EdT # 3: Noir Intense

I figured there might be some bitter notes in a scent meant to have notes of dark chocolate. I think there are. It’s not bitter like fragrances with oakmoss and such in it, but it’s a fairly bitter chocolate.

As for the week, I did sweet several times, sour a couple of times, tried salty with JM Wood Sage and Sea Salt, and am now trying for bitter. I never did figure out umami. When I told someone about this project, and what foods had umami as a flavor, she said, “You could just dab some soy sauce behind your ears.” lol. No, I didn’t take her teasing advice. :)

If the project for a Friday is pretty straightforward, I remember about it (that’s the tough part), and have the fragrances for it, I’ll try. Sometimes I don’t visit here on a given day, and I’m not trying to count points at all. I enjoy the interactions with people, though. :)

And yes. That was in the later part of last week’s spending spree. I will have much to confess to Donatella just from one week, let alone the rest of the quarter. That’s why I’m going to try to do a no-buy for the rest of the year or so.

I’m trying # 2, Praline, tonight. I’m mostly getting a salty scent from it at the moment.

Sometimes leather scents can work for umami. But maybe you aren’t a fan of those?

I have a couple of samples of leather scents now, which I will try at some point. You know that I wasn’t a fan of the HdP Marquis de Sade cologne. I got leather permeated through with cigarette smoke from that one. You and others likely have different perceptions of it.

Apparently leather fragrances used to be made with rectified birch tar. I’m quite allergic to birch, the allergist tells me. That may just be the pollen. But, as I said above, sometime I’ll experiment with leather colognes.

I love salt notes so much I opted for it twice today: JH Sel Marin on one arm, JM Wood Sage and Sea Salt on the other. I almost joined some of you in wearing a Merveilles scent but I wear those all the time so I opted for something different. Smelling seaworthy today, apropos of a stormy, wet day here.

I only had time to quickly scan posts this week, but add my recommendation to the Ken Burns’ Country Music documentary some of you enjoyed. Aside from the early Appalachian music we encountered and fell in love with years ago when we serendipitously stumbled upon a mountain music fest in Kentucky, we’re not really country music fans. But we were glued to this series. The evolution of country music mirrors the history of our country and was fascinating, as were the wonderfully detailed stories of the musicians and the incredible footage. Well worth watching!

Last night we went to a 3-guitar chamber music performance and enjoyed it immensely. Whatever your musical tastes, I hope its ability to touch one’s heart and lift one’s spirit finds you this weekend.

    SOTD = Papillon Bengale Rouge

Doing my tandem CP of new acquisition and taste. To 4 sprays of Bengale Rouge, I added a teeny tiny spray of Indult Tihota to amp up the vanilla. Ahhhh, so satisfying. I will categorize this as umami even though it does not fit the definition ?.

***** Off-topic. ? don’t read if not interested in my Medicare appeal. I almost had a conniption on Wednesday when I saw via USPS tracking that my 3.5 pounds worth of new evidence could not be delivered because there’s no one to receive it. Oh for goodness sake, it’s not like it’s a 1 person shop! It’s a government agency with big operations and it was 1:30 in the afternoon! When I got home last night to check, I breathed a sigh of relief that it was indeed successfully delivered. Paying for Priority Mail did not help one bit. In any case, I hope it’s still considered timely as I want to get this over and done with!

I’m not familiar with your Medicare appeal but my husband has been fighting with Medicare and social security for 18 months and a favorable resolution was finally reached last week. There’s hope!

I’m glad your husband got a favorable resolution. My mom stayed at sub-acute rehab for 62 days (before we moved her to a Senior Home run by nuns) and Medicare only paid for 21 days. I am appealing for Medicare to pay for the entire 62 days, the OT/PT and, if it falls within Medicare guidelines, the private duty aide we had to hire because the facility was very understaffed. Ultimately, while I hope we win, it’s not for the money (I am donating 100% of my share of mom’s estate from the appeal win) but to introduce into the system that the little guys can and will fight the system and expose the cracks AND also, specifically, the facility where my mom stayed at had serious issues that need to be addressed (for which I already had a face to face talk with the administrator). The profit motive behind Medicare Advantage and for-profit Skilled Nursing Facilities encourages collusion and fraud when they can target consumers whom they think have the ability to continue paying privately – win-win for Medicare Advantage (no $s out the door to pay for the contracted SNF) and the SNF (can collect more $s than the rate negotiated with Medicare Advantage). By my calculation, the SNF can get almost $5,000 MORE per person per month from a private payer at the lowest level of care ($11,500 vs. $6,500 they get paid by Medicare). The SNF was a 300 bed facility so even if only 5% fall into the same situation as mom, the SNF can pocket an extra almost $900k a year. Multiply the $900k by the number of facilities owned by the same company and you can see how quickly the $s add up.

More power to you and your fight. It’s a necessary one. We faced some similarities in one of my father’s 21 day stays that needed to be 2 months. Too many feelings and frustrations to think about, still.

I hope not! If they haven’t already, they should just keep asking questions and be suspicious of the answer. Even though the facility knows the family is asking specifically about their loved one, the nurse or whoever works there would typically answer with a generalized statement. For example:
Family-“How often do / did you turn / reposition my mom / dad?”
Facility-“Our protocol is to reposition patients every 2 hours.”
If you accept that as an answer, you don’t really know if they applied this to mom / dad. And unless they observe what they really do, you can’t verify that what they’re saying is true.

I had intended to do Sacrebleu Intense for spicy, but another new sample begged me to try it: Amouage Portrayal, which I guess counts as sweet. The drydown smells like a fancy vanilla custard to me, though the elemi in the base keeps it interesting. I really enjoyed the evolution of this one today.

Three cheers for round two! Good luck! I was the same way about family get togethers when I was younger. Now that I have no family left, I remember my long suffering signs of resentment at having to “dress up” and tolerate the horrendous celebratory dinners and events. I still don’t miss them- the get togethers, that is- although I DO miss a very specific few of my family members.

Hello! I’m having so much fun seeing what everyone is wearing. I saved my big umami fragrance for today: CBIHP Here, Piggy, with mushroom and truffle notes. Weirdly I love truffles but hate mushrooms, so I was nervous to wear this full-on because on paper it smelled VERY mushroomy, but on skin it was more truffle than mushroom and that blended well with the overall masculine-aromatic thing, so I ended up liking it a lot more than I expected.

I do 4-6 grams of vitamin C and 25mg of zinc and almost all the colds I get only last 3-4 days. I normally take 2-3 grams of C/day on a regular and hoping that’s why I only get 1-2 colds a year, but who knows, and I probably just jinxed myself, lol.

I went with sweet yesterday, in the relaunch of Anne Klein II! I was stunned to see a bottle at TJ Maxx, since the original (which I wore in the 1980s) was discontinued years ago, then I realized it was a new version, by a new owner. It’s very nice! I wore it yesterday with the vintage, and they are very similar. For $12.99, I’m happy to have it! Buyers beware — the new owners have the rights to everything, so the packaging looks almost identical to the original vintage, which sells for hundreds of dollars online. This relaunch is labeled Made In China, and the new owner is palmbeachbeaute.
