Frederic Malle Rose & Cuir ~ new fragrance

Posted by Robin on 21 August 2019 33 Comments

French niche line Frédéric Malle will launch Rose & Cuir, a new floral leather fragrance from perfumer Jean-Claude Ellena.

The fragrance Rose et Cuir reveals a unique simplicity imagined by Jean-Claude Ellena. The floral beauty brought by the rose accompanied by blackcurrant and geranium plunges us into a minimalist universe. Leather brings mystery to this world and completes this fragrance that seduces us with subtlety.

Frédéric Malle Rose & Cuir can be pre-ordered now from Nose in France, in 50 and 100 ml Eau de Parfum.

(via nose.fr)

Update: additional notes include vetiver, pepper and cedar. It reportedly smells like rose, but has no actual rose in the ingredients. (via Elle Spain August 2019)

Another update: the description from Liberty London...

On the surface, this rose is pure, streamlined and uncompromisingly modern, blended with a unique extraction of timut pepper, geranium bourbon and a note of cassis. Peel back the layers, and a quiet storm reveals itself; a dark and mysterious bed of earthy vetiver, cedar and leather, with IsoButyl Quinoline at the centre – an intensely bitter synthetic molecule resurrected from its since-forgotten debut in the daring perfumery of the Jazz Age. Equal parts sparkling and sober, perfumery's most iconic floral is shadowed by a dramatic yet controlled sensuality.

I wonder if this will be similar to Galop

Hooboy. Between this and the Nars, I better start burying money in the backyard.

Does your backyard offer interest? Maybe I’ll move my savings there too ;-)

    Add to cart!

Honestly, between this and the 11 Celine scents (ALL of which i need) – the fragrance gods are being very kind to me for fall this year.

I’m very excited for this. I cannot imagine how it’ll smell but I’m very tempted to pre-order a smaller bottle.

I reread the blurb. I thought JCE didn’t like “minimalist.” ;)

I thought so too, but I’d guess he did not write the blurb.

Do you think he created the scent first, and then named it? Or did he have the name and concept first, and then created the scent? I am guessing that the final product includes the scents of rose and leather? But oddly neither are listed in the notes, which is doubly odd regarding the rose, if, as Elle Spain says, rose is not listed in the notes (I am differentiating notes from ingredients–presumably lots of rose scents don’t have any actual rose in their ingredients) but the perfume smells like rose–why not include rose in the notes? When we say a wine has notes of raspberry, chocolate and mushroom, we don’t for a moment believe the wine was made with raspberry, chocolate and mushroom, right?

But in fact rose is mentioned in the quoted description above, as is leather.

I got to smell this last week. I did not really get rose, it was more of a cool vegetal leather. Do not blind buy this!! It is very sheer and similar in feel to his minimalistic Hermessences.

Is it at all like his Cuir d’Ange? I love that one.
Oh, and thanks for reporting back!

It’s been a while since I smelled Cuir d’Ange, so I’m not sure, but offhand I’d say no. I did get some tomato leaf.

“Cool vegetal leather” sounds just like his Hermessences line-up.

That sounds perfect for me but I could easily own (not buy) all of his Hermessences. Save AN. :)

Blackcurrant is usually a no go for me as is heavy geranium a good amount of time. I would want to sample Lipstick Rose and Leather though:).
