Friday scent of the day 12/14

Posted by Robin on 14 December 2018 224 Comments

It's Friday and it's World Monkey Day! Our (monkey-free) community project for today: wear a fragrance by Dame Perfumery, Dawn Spencer Hurwitz, Divine or DS & Durga, if you have one. Partial credit for any other small-ish brand that starts with the letter D.

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I'm still out of town, and so have no access to any of my D fragrances. Zero points for me! But I smell awfully good in Aftelier Candide, day 5.

Reminder: on 12/21 we're doing What's your number...wear a perfume with a number in the name, if you have one. Suggested by thegoddessrena.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I’m in Dame Cactus Orchid, which was a sample I hadn’t tried yet. This is in the form of a perfume oil, although they have it as an EDT. I’m not really getting anything other than the oil base. I should have gone with one of my faves from this house, like Dark Horse or New Musk Man, but I wanted to stick with an untouched sample. Oh well…

Hi all – happy Friday! Today’s SOTD is Alessandro Dell’ Acqua, a beautiful herbal dry floral with Geranium, coriander, sweet pea, peony with incense, sandalwood/musk dry down. One of my favorites!

SOTD is DSH Lumiere. This is supposed to be a coffee scent, but I never seem to get coffee from it, What I do get is a warm, spicy scent with a note that makes me think of candle wax, which I find quite appropriate for the Christmas season.

    SotD = Dyptique Tam Dao

Welp, at least Dyptique starts with D. My last name does too, so I couldn’t bear to miss trying to get in sync with today’s theme. At school my little students sometimes can’t say my last name, so I tell them they can call me “Mrs. D.” I like it when they do that. :D

My week has been completely nuts, feeling relieved and so glad it’s FriYAY (hi Jada!), and can’t wait to read what everyone chooses for today. I’m going to dig out my Dame samples this afternoon and have a quiet solo sniff-a-thon.

I enjoy Black Flower Mexican Vanilla and Dark Horse. I was surprised when I tried them!

The floral eaux line, like Lime, Gardenia & Benzoin, don’t work for me even though I am a floral girl at heart. They smell harsh on my skin, but that’s just me.

    TGIF!
Wearing the last drops of my fb of DSH Cafe Noir. The opening has a gorgeous coffee flavored brandy note with lots of cinnamon. Few minutes later it calms down to spices and vanilla. A spicy coffee perfume which is so warm and delicious. If I were not on a
“no-buy” commitment I would replace this bottle, but there are so many other beauties waiting for me on my collection.

    Happy Friday everyone!

No points for me (again), but of course I have an excuse. I’ve been lemming after Olfactive Studio Autoportrait for months and not being able to find it anywhere. But yesterday I got an email saying it was back in stock at LuckyScent, and I pounced immediately. Celebrating today in Autoportrait from my dwindling, tiny sample, and have a philosophical question: does a thunk count as a thunk if one has simultaneously ordered a FB of the same scent?

Yes, it should still count–but maybe it’s a softer thunk? ;). And when you finish the new bottle, that will be another thunk!

I am wearing Damien Bash Lucifer No. 3 from a sample (thunk!), for partial credit. It starts as a light scent, but then it turns into a rich mix of frankincense and myrrh. I like it.
Considering the name of the scent, its main notes and the fact that now is mid-December, Christmas with the Devil by Spinal Tap could be a good musical match for this scent. :)

Oh, and my SOTD has a number in the name, so I begin the next week’s CP early (CP crossover again).

I’m wearing the wonderful DSH Coeur de Vanille. It’s a non-sweet boozy vanilla that turns spicy mid-development. Sadly it’s no longer offered on her website, but in the past she’s stated to contact her if there’s a perfume you’re interested in that isn’t in the site. Since I still have 10-15ml of this one and 500,000 other perfumes (approximately ?), I’ll probably be fine with what I have.

I read comments from yesterday this morning and want to assure everyone that in the case of the short notice I was given to meet a deadline at work, it was only due to my coworker taking on more than she could manage and not my company taking advantage of me. While piling lots of work on the most capable workers does happen at times, I work for a pretty good company and boss. I’m very lucky! A big project I’m on is winding down so I did have the capacity to pitch in and get things done, though I wish she had thought to ask me for help sooner.

Not participating in the community project today. I am in my Andy Tauer Noontide Petals. It was really horrible at work yesterday. The opener stood around and did absolutely nothing, our new girl didn’t do much at all. That meant I had to do everything and still needed to get someone from another department to help out. I swear that dead people could accomplish more. I am happy that I have a actual help in my department today. Good thing I am off tomorrow and Sunday to relax and finish my Christmas shopping.

Wearing my favourite Divine, the original Divine. In extrait de parfum which is has been given the lovely name of L’éternel feminin. I would love a bloke to wear this though, like Fracas.
So glad it’s Friday. The short days are taking their toll, but only a few more weeks to go before they’ll start getting longer again.

      And I get your Divine/Fracas-for-guys-wish.

No points for me. I was convinced I had no D-scents… completely forgetting about the delicious decant of Tempo that the fabulous hajusuuri sent me earlier this year was from Diptyque. I’ll wear it tomorrow instead.

Today, I am mostly smelling of Rozy VdP, roast chicken, relief, Feliway, vet smells, gratitude, and warm cat… as I finally got to bring my moggy Herschel home after 5 days with the vets. With some fantastic care, she’s survived a collapse caused by acute pancreatitis and extra kidney issues that joined in for the no-fun party and is now well enough again to recuperate at home.

In case any of you is overwhelmed by Dawn’s website, when I first started exploring the line I found searching by note useful. Recently, there’s also a series of reviews on the blog “take one thing off” based on scent families which is beautifully written and quite helpful as well.

I don’t know if I’ll continue on a regular basis! I was gifted with a buncha perfume in November and am enjoying exploring those when the spirit moves me to do so. Since many were from DSH, I pulled out all of hers that I already own so I guess I now have a school of DSH swimming together in The Sample Sea. If one swims into my consciousness, I’ll wear it.

Oh yay! I love it too! Palo santo can often veer off into an uncomfortable minty realm which always perplexes me in what is supposed to be a sacred ceremonial material. I liked sampling Carner Barcelona’s Palo Santo, but don’t recall that it actually smelled of its namesake.

I’m still in my one single spray of l’Elephant from yesterday. I burrowed under the covers last night and enjoyed my own personal tent of rapturous fragrance!

After the PO refused my overnight delivery (Why? WHY?!?), I was able to talk with the knowledgeable and helpful folks at FedEx, who told me what truck my delivery was on and that is had just returned to the distribution center. I hightailed it over there and finally got my van tags!! Don’t have drivers license, SS card, or CC’s, but now I can LEAVE! So that’s what I’m doing today, as soon I get a few last minute things completed. Leaving and never coming back??

In other good news, my recruiter was able to arrange for a phone call between myself and the unit manager at the hospital in Oregon where I was submitted earlier for the incorrect position. The end result was, “Sure, we can get you on days!”

So I AM headed back there after all. It’s only for 10 weeks, but what a relief! These last couple of weeks have been a wild ride. Thanks to everyone who offered encouraging words. I love perfume, but the main reason I continue to read and comment here is because the PEOPLE here are the kindest ever. Happy Holidays to ALL and for those that are struggling right now, please remember to read NST everyday to get your fix of “Good.” It really does help get you through some bumpy times. ✌?

I finally got atomisers to decant the splash bottle into. I must say spraying vs dabbing doth make the difference. I get a lot more of the spicy, middle notes vs the massive rose. I wore a lot ot Coco as a wee lassie in the 90s. Any current reformulation is a sacrilege . . . even the colour of the juice is lighter *brr*.

Since yesterday was Hot Cocoa day and today is Dame Perfumery day, I’ve chosen his Chocolate Man in oil form layered over BBW’s new Hot Cocoa and Cream, and I must say, I smell delicious! Later, I’ll add Black Flower Mexican Vanilla to the mix . . . Mmmmmm! I sometimes feel that there are only 5 corporations that own every single business in the world, and so I look for every opportunity to support small businesses. Jeffrey’s attention to detail, generosity with samples, and lovely fragrances that work with my chemistry, coupled with the contributions from his other family members, make me a strong supporter. I have several full bottles but probably have a sample of every one of his scents, thanks to his generosity.

We may have to change Little Bear’s name soon, as she’s growing by leaps and bounds (as well as in her ability to leap and bound!) and is no longer roly-poly and bearlike. Instead she is long and sleek with a very shiny, very black coat and resembles a young panther. Except for the little white star at the base of her throat and the sometimes crazed look in her eyes – which makes her look like Bad Kitty incarnate! If you’re not familiar with Nick Bruel’s hilarious books, I urge you to check them out – although geared for children, any adult who’s ever known a ‘bad’ kitty will smile! My grandkids, at age 11, like to act his stories out, complete with ‘bad kitty’ sound effects.

Wishing everyone a wonderful weekend ahead and sending hugs to all in need of one!

Lalia Amen to what you said. I have little discretionary income with two at university and one more to go next year but any perfume purchase I make I would rather support indie lines if I can. We have a multitude of Dames around the house ( and as an aside he just launched a new line) but I also really love the fragrances of Jessica September Buchanan of 1000 Flowers and Diane St. Clair of St. Clair Scents. SSS was also a n indie I adored.

Hi everyone, I didn’t have time to comment yesterday, my Friday, but I did make best efforts and wore Miss Dior, from the very not-smallish house starting with D. I discovered a colleague used to wear Miss Dior years ago, so that was a very pleasant office conversation.
I’m still lingering perfume-free over breakfast, and contemplating the supermarket shopping.

The original Miss Dior in vintage form has been a favorite of mine for many years. There’s probably even a bit left to accompany your breakfast time, I know on me I could always smell a trace of it many hours later.

Saturday and another drab, cloudy day…hopeless summer down here so far. The linden/lime trees are just flowering. What a beautiful scent …the smell of Christmas for me. Jm Lime Blossom to match.

Mmm, you smell wonderful, as do the flowers. Grey and overcast here on the Pacific coast as well.

Love French Lime Blossom, you smell so pretty, you know it has recently been discontinued, can’t figure why as it had been around since the 1990’s.

I’m a little bit broken-hearted that the KFC yule logs sold out so quickly. I don’t know that I would have bought one, but I certainly would have sniffed the wrapper–deeply. Ah, well, I’m more of a Popeye’s person anyway. Maybe next year. And please, someone, make a Wendy’s chili log?? With cheese and onions.

Finally, finally, I can smell again after a cold that lasted nearly 2 weeks. I’m participating today in DSH Oeillets Rouges, but what I really want to wear is 24, Faubourg. I will save that for tonight’s attendance at a performance of Bach’s Christmas Oratorio.

Enjoy the performance. That sounds lovely.

OR is very spicy. I don’t get much carnation, but that’s okay.

I found it sweet and spicy and the spicy is carnation spicy to my nose. The travel spray of it I got gummed up 3 different atomizers.

I love Wendy’s chili but hold the cheese. I buy 2 every time I get my haircut and eat one over 2 or 3 meals and freeze the other one to eat within a month when I have limited options.

    Dame Earth Mother.
This morning it was sooo gray and cloudy here, so I went to see the new Clint Eastwood movie. When I came out of the theater a couple hours later, Boom! blue skies and sun!? The kind of blue where there is literally not a cloud in the sky. It was like magic. Maybe from now on when it is crummy out, I should just go the the movies.?

Perhaps it wasn’t just ‘magic’ after all . . . perhaps it was Earth Mother working her ‘magic.’ I love this one – it gives me a sense of strength and confidence and yet comfort at the same time.

Thank you all so much for all the kind and caring comments last week.
This is such a great community

Today I had a day off. I wore Bois d’Encens by Armani (from a sample), took a walk in the woods. It was sunny and freezing, the leaves were covered in frost, it was beautiful and soothing. And the scent was a good companion.

Now I am sampling Hyde, by Hiram Green. Dark and smoky wood, with honey and spices. Perfect for cold weather. But at the moment it feels like its wearing me instead of the other way around haha. I think one spray will do next time (i applied generously this afternoon).

Hyde was huge on me. Definitely a one spritz scent. :-) Bois d’Encens on the other hand is a big favourite, perfect for a walk in the woods.

Not on topic with yet another day of Stash body lotion. I was going to layer with something else, then remembered that I have a strict no scent rehearsal tonight and decided against.
Anyway, I finally made my fragrancenet purchase so back to report to everyone – I really appreciated all the suggestions. I ended up getting cheapo, cheapo frags for both girls as stocking stuffers – Moschino Funny for 11 year old, CK Truth for 13 year old (this has been compared to Champaca – can’t wait to sniff!). Plus a bottle of L’instant pour homme for dh. Turns out – this got me to free shipping so I got no extra anything for myself :(
    Happy Friday!

TGIF for sure! It’s always a little disconcerting to hear the buzz of a news helicopter over your quiet suburban neighborhood. Wonder what’s going on? ?

SOTD = Divine EdP by Divine, from the decant stash. I’m scent triplets with Mary Carol and austenfan. Divine has some shared traits with Fracas to me… both are voluptuous, Grande Dames of scent. I likes!

I have the same feeling of unease to noise from the sky which is probably due more to the air activity in lower Manhattan in the aftermath of 9-11.

Last time there was a news helo in my area, there was a major accident on one of the highways close by, like a mile or so. I didn’t hear any sirens this afternoon, though.

Just a quick report, since I’m exhausted now from company, shopping, and PT. I don’t have any of the D scents, so this morning I chose Parfums Delrae Panache. It’s a bit too understated, so tonight I’ve switched to the wondrous Amoureuse. Later tonight will be a Christmas lights tour and then Mexican restaurant dinner. I’ll read everyone’s comments later.
