Wednesday scent of the day 11/28

Posted by Robin on 28 November 2018 231 Comments

It's Hump Day and French Toast Day. Birthdays: Jon Stewart, Martin Clunes. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm going with L’Artisan Parfumeur Skin on Skin.

Reminder: 11/30 will be Renegades Friday...wear a perfume by Mark Buxton, Bertrand Duchaufour or Geza Schoen, if you have one.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

French toast and Jon Stewart – two of my favorite things! SOTD is Chanel 19 EDP.

OJ Woman. This one always reminds me of home. I think that’s why I like it so much.
Yesterday on a whim, I emailed OJ customer service to ask if one could customize their own travel lab set that is offered on the website. I got a response back within a few hours, and guess what? You can!?

I loooooove OJ Woman. I’ve been wearing it quite a bit lately now that it’s cooling off some. You smell gorgeous!

That’s so exciting that you can customize. What are you going to get?? Do tell!

Thanks! It really is so good.

Well, I already have a 10 ml decant of this one so I’m good on Woman. I also love Champaca and Osmanthus. Then maybe Frangipani, Ta’if and Tolu…..I still have a handful of OJ samples from Luckyscent I need to try.

I am wearing Burberry Brit Gold – I love the gingery note. I layered with a orange & clove body butter from Trader Joe’s (special from last year during the holidays). I sure hope they do that body butter again, or I will have to find a suitable substitute.

Today it’s a winter favorite by BD, Vanille Absolument aka Havana Vanille. I love the narcissus note–which is actually more prominent in warm weather. Why oh why was it discontinued?! It’s a beauty.

    SotD = Myrrh Eglantine

The potted Mister Lincoln rose on my back patio surprised me with a bloom this morning. It is very fragrant in the cold air. The rose note in ME is mingling nicely with the real thing.

Have a wonderful Wednesday, perfumed peeps!

    Love all, trust a few,

    Rather in power than use,
    and keep thy friend

Giving Dzongkha the old college try, since it’s one of Duchaufour’s most beloved… I struggle with this one because a sample once leaked all over my L’Artisan mini-drawer, and so every time I wore L’Artisan for like a year my fingers picked up traces of Dzongkha which always, in the usual fashion of perfumes you don’t really like, seemed to smell stronger than whatever I was actually wearing. I’ve taken a long break though and now that I’m wearing it voluntarily, I do like it, though I fear it will never be love for me.

Dzongkha should be a joy for me, but it always ends up being a bit of a scrubber. There’s something about it that I just can’t take, despite loving the list of notes.

Good morning Y’all…..Brrrrrrrrrrrrrr……I’d rather be hiberating, but here we are….

Wearing a forgotten sample of Neela Vermiere Mohur. Very nice and elegant to my nose!

Spent about an hour digging thru my samples for the Friday challenge, so by the time I got to bed, I had dabbed or sprayed on at least 6 goodies. About an hour later my hubs crawled into bed and started laughing….and said, “WHAT ARE YOU WEARING? It smells like a bordello in here! ” HA HA HA HA HA I had on some potent goodies: Alien Eau Extraordinaire, Tresor Midnight Rose, and so forth….I have to say, this morning I smelled pretty amazing!

How does the hubs know what a bordello smells like anyway????? :)

I am having cinnamon raisin toast, not exactly french toast, but I get points.

I am reading the New Yorker this morning, and the Shouts & Murmurs are my favorite section. This week, they have it on “Explaining US Holidays to Extraterrestrails”
I have to share this one since its hysterical:

New Year’s Eve: Human life is terribly short, so on this day we celebrate staving off death for another revolution around the sun. Lots of people smash their mouths together and drink poison. Our nation’s largest clump of people drops a big, shiny ball that costs more than a million dollars—and it’s not even a bomb!

Vanilla tea this morning, if any makes it into my mouth since I keep laughing.

    Sotd is Vitrum, Sammarco.

Received very sad news about my father in law. He was diagnosed years ago with leukaemia, but they were able to control it so far. But it has transgressed and he probably has no more than a few weeks, a month or so left. Sad times. Just like last year (when my mom was in ICU) christmas time will be uncanny and uncertain – even if he makes it to the end of December…
We are sad, but I hope we will be given enough time to enjoy his company, arrange things and talk the important things over.

Hug your loved ones everyone, life is too short!

First day back at work after Thanksgiving, and it’s going to be a very long day. We’re doing a system switch that will affect the public, and I’ll be in the “war room” all day to help communicate with employees about what’s going on. Wearing Queen of the Night. I need to wear it more often because my decant is evaporating. Ugh evaporating decants, am I right?

Hate finding evaporated decants. It has really discouraged me from buying more. I know I won’t finish a full bottle, but at the same time I can be confident it will last for many years, so I continue buying bottles.

I smell wonderful in Eau d’Italie Paestum Rose, thanks to the swapmeet! <3 BD. I'll be very sad when my decant runs dry.

Last night, the boyfriend had an udon craving, so we got some from a sushi place down the street from us that's always been meh and overpriced but very convenient. The udon was really bad, so I wrote a negative review on Yelp, whereupon the restaurant owner let loose the most vituperative response I've ever seen, one you'd never expect in any kind of professional setting, especially one as customer facing as a restaurant! I reported her ad-hominem attacks and threats (she threatened to call the police on me and sue me for libel, I think), and I do hope Yelp will take action, but it still left a bad taste in my mouth. I reread my review to make sure I hadn't accidentally said something unfair, and nope, looks like a pretty standard two-star review (which I obviously downgraded to one star after her responses). I even read through past reviews, and there were plenty of two-star reviews that didn't receive such vitriol. Someone said their udon was an u-don't, and yet my review was the one worthy of irrational wrath?

Anyway, I’m a little worried because I ordered through Grubhub, so she knows my address, so if anything happens to me, you know where to look first.

That’s what I figured. In fact (and I know this isn’t really in the spirit of all you lovely people on NST), reminding myself that there was probably some external reason why she was acting like that, and knowing that she must feel worse than I did, is what helped me get to sleep.

That’s unnerving for sure. Maybe it was the pressure cooker thing where after other negative reviews, yours was the one to finally cause her to explode? Who knows, but sad that some businesses can’t use criticism to improve and need to be defensive. It hurts them more in the end, especially when other people can see how they responded to you.
I’ve left a couple of negative reviews and got a full refund from a hotel stay that was deeply unsatisfying and an offer for a free meal in a restaurant that had bad service (they completely forgot about me-1 of about 4 other customers) because the wait staff were busy on their cell phones and I had to get up and interrupt every time I needed something. Point being, sometimes the business listens.
And of course you smell great, twin!

I’m wearing Eau Duelle today – I love it, but I feel it needs to be below 40 F to wear it without it wearing me, and it rarely gets that cold here. However, today is sunny and chilly and perfect Eau Duelle weather!

My sister-in-law is going to Japan and very sweetly offered to bring me back a bottle of perfume. I know nothing about the Japanese perfume scene – does anyone have any recommendations for special perfumes I should look into that are not easily available in North America or Europe?

I am feeling extremely satisfied this morning. My holiday present to myself was to give donations to every organization I wanted to give to. Usually I cut it down to three or four, but yesterday I made eight sizable (for us!) donations to my favorite charities. Still have not paid off the credit cards—but that will come.

Duchaufour, eh? One of my favorites! I could easily go for two weeks wearing his perfumes alone. Haven’t put on perfume yet (wanted to check the CP), but am thinking about Nuit de Tubereuse…

Yesterday I went a little crazy spraying my Lilac Love sample. Not recommended. At those concentrations it is weirdly a metallic floral. But then it mellowed and smoothed, and by the end of the day I could hardly pull my wrist away from my nose. Cocoa powder, skin, and rose jam.

That’s a really good present. Without getting into the politics are most of the organisations local (Californian) or international?

Since I was just “going for it” I hadn’t thought about any themes. This year my donations are not terribly political. Looking at my list, 4 orgs are not only in California but are within 100 miles of my home (breast cancer, cancer camp, digital divide in poorer communities, and a school) and earlier in the month I contributed to the LA fire dept and my local public radio station–so that is a lot of California, 2 are national (fighting racism, and fighting a brain disorder), and 2 are international (human rights and MSF). But now I have thought of several more–next pay check perhaps. :-)

I meant to do that yesterday when there were lots of matching programs, but did not get to it until today — luckily a few orgs are doing matching even today. We do not give large sums but even giving small amounts of money to organizations I care about is really satisfying.

But I am flabbergasted at how many organizations still do not take paypal donations! Get with it people!

It’s still raining! Feels like week 3 of murk and now two takahe chicks at the local bird ecosanctuary have died from the wet which is pretty sad as there are only 345 takahe in the world. These birds were thought to be extinct in the 1880s but then were rediscovered in the 1940s in a remote mountain range. They are actually a bit bland as birds go, they potter about (flightless) doing their thing ( eating). I think I may be focussed on birds at the moment as I am reading Jonathan Franzen’s essays The End if the End of the World which is pretty birdy in scope. I saw that the creator of Sponge Bob died yesterday at the age of 57. I watched a lot of sponge bob when my son was small.
Right, time to get up! JM Snowdrop and moss…lasts better when sprayed on my jumper. The spice aspect comes through. Happy toast day!

That’s sad about the chicks, but the good news is that while 345 is a small number, it is not too small to save a species. The whooping cranes in North America were found to be down to just over 20 individuals in the early 1940s when conservation efforts began to save them. There are now estimated to be around 800. They are still endangered, of course, but at least they are increasing in number.

Not in the mood for my two scents, which would fit the CP, as i don’t like them in cold weather (Timbuktu and Eccentric Molecule 01 are summer scents for me)
So wore the last of a sample of Lipstick On by Margiela. Got not as much lipstick and powder than the last try and was just a tad too sweet.
    But the sample is thunked!
Got some Papillon Salome from a split and just a drop smells really strong. Such a great animalic chypre…. Boyfriend was not enthusiastic. I think my 5ml will last the whole winter.

My husband doesn’t get this either. Every time I wear it I’m like “smell me and die of happiness!” and he’s like, “eh”. He is not shy of strong scents, either (he loves Rhinoceros) so his failure to swoon for Salome is a great mystery.

I went thrift shopping recently and bought $100 worth of clothes and just as I was starting to feel a little guilty the cashier said, “and it’s half off day, so that will be $50”. I love thrift stores.

Actually, yes…a pair of black jeans (Lee jeans always work for me), a hoodie, three short sleeve gym shirts and two long sleeved shirts that will be great for layering.

Do you know, there was a fur coat for $99 and two leather jackets on the coat rack?? Amazing. Did not need or want them, but they will be a great find for someone.

I’m always a bit envious of those who can find things at thrift shops. I don’t know whether other areas have better thrift shops than we have here, or if I am just hard to please, as I consistently find nothing. Of course, everything is always too short on me (I am 5’9″), as I never find tall sizes in thrift shops. I see plenty of jeans, for example, but they are always short or average inseams.

I feel your pain. I’m 5’8”, and don’t often find jeans that are long enough. I tried on ~15 pairs of jeans and pants today, and found one pair that fit right. It’s a struggle!

In a now thunked vial (thanks swapmeet extra!) of Rahele. I liked Niral better – this has a mild “cologne” note to me that I don’t really appreciate. I wish I had better olfactory vocabulary to identify what that note is!
Oh, also, don’t ever forget two ripe avocados in your work bag over thanksgiving break….

Haha! Oy. Must smell great ? I remember in high school I left a green bell pepper in a bag in my locker for probably a month until I noticed the smell was coming from MY locker. Oof, that was bad.

Your avocado experience sounds a little like what happened with my blueberries today, except that I ate a few that were perhaps a little moldy before I realized they were bad. I just started popping them in, swallowed and didn’t sense the taste until it was too late! Ugh!

I’m sampling JHAG Liquid Illusion today. There seems to be a lot going on here and it’s good in colder weather. The sample didn’t look blue, the way the bottle looks online.

It’s gray, wet, and gloomy here so I am cheering myself up in the lemon-lime goodness of April Aromatics’ Ray of Light. Plus Bertie Wooster is sleeping on my lap.

No SOTD for me today. Went to the gym and just back from a walking round of golf, well, 9 holes plus a replay of 3 for a total of 12 holes. Not sure if they are common here, but my brother-in-law saw an armadillo on one of the holes.

I need a foot massage but that won’t happen so I will have to settle for a bubble bath and will probably spray on some Vol de Nuit for bedtime.

Posting late today! So far, this has been a weird week. Not quite sure what is going on, just that things feel a little “off”.

SOTD = back in Dior Poison Girl EdT. The sample is still with me, and even spritzed better than it did yesterday. Hopefully this one won’t be one of those samples that takes forever to use the last little bit of.

SOTD this morning was PPC Branch & Vine; I am trying to decide whether I “need” a FB of this. I could use a light, not overpowering scent that is not a citrus EdC, for all the hot weather in this part of the woods. SOTD for the afternoon was PPC Love-in-a-Mist. I am not sure I like this enough to buy a bottle, but I wish I did, as I love the name.
SOTE is April Aromatics Liquid Dreams, from the bottle that just arrived today. This was a not-exactly-blind buy, as I had a sample before, but I couldn’t remember what it smelled like, only that I really liked it. Fortunately, I still really like it, so I expect to wear it quite often. I think this will be another one good for warm weather.

I’ll have to read everyone’s comments, it has been so intense at work lately I have to remember to breathe! But breathe I will tonight, my samole of Hyde arrived today. I’ve been so excited to try it. On first swipe, I was a bit scared…very smoky. In just a few minutes the smoke softens and some sunshine starts to peak through. I’m looking forward to seeing how this goes…

    SOTD = NVC Mohur EDP

I’ll take a vat of this and the extrait!

A while back, I inadvertently turned my sister towards more mainstream perfumes in lieu of scented goodies from Dawn Spencer Hurwitz – see the 3rd story in this link to the post in Undina’s blog:

    https://undina.com/2014/05/31/are-you-a-perfume-extrovert-or-introvert/

This past weekend, my sister told me that she sold off her perfume collection and will revert back to using DSH scents exclusively. Having learned my lesson, I gave her the sparkle2018 discount code (thank you Holly) and she was able to get 20%. I have yet to place my order but will do so shortly as Upstate Moonbeam sounds fantastic!

I have 2 calls tonight with Asia colleageues and will read the comments later.

I send you the same Lillyjo. Cherish your memories, keep them alive & close to you.
The holidays really bring it all to the forefront, do you have little customs or habits of theirs that you can do in memory of them to keep you company? We do those things all the time at my house- silly or serious it really helps.
