Tuesday scent of the day 11/13

Posted by Robin on 13 November 2018 152 Comments

It's World Kindness Day. RIP Stan Lee. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Aftelier Vanilla Smoke. My cup at the moment is Upton English Breakfast with a tiny dash of Mariage Fréres French Breakfast.

Reminder: on 11/16, wear a savory perfume (something spicy, herbal, salty, or otherwise foody but not sweet). Suggested by Jalapeno.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the Marvel Comics Avengers teapot ("Made of high-quality ceramic, the spiffy decal design turns a humble teapot into one the Super Soldier would be proud to brew in") is $12 at Amazon.

It is actually snowing in East Texas today. No accumulation expected, but this is very unusual for us in Mid-November. I’m wearing Arquiste J. Crew No.31.

Snow and Texas in the same sentence just sounds wrong to me, lol.

I first put on some Laboratorio Olfattivo Alambar which I don’t enjoy at all. I then added Geranium Odorata, which is nice but a bit fleeting. Greatly enjoying the geranium though I added some Géranium pour monsieur, which is beautiful.

I really dislike it and it lasts and lasts and lasts……. It’s even overpowering the geranium combo.
No accounting for tastes I guess. I didn’t like the other LO that I tried either. Can’t even remember the name.

I had a sample so I wanted to try it. And please don’t feel offended, I didn’t mean to be rude, just that I sprayed it on my wrist this morning and it has only just left me, and it outstayed its welcome. I’ve since put it in a bag with other samples in need of a better home ;)

It happens to me quite often when I’m testing things. Of course if it’s truly horrible to me, I try to wash it off, but that’s not always possible. And if it’s just a dislike, I might persevere because I want to give it a chance/follow the development. I’ve always thought it’s one of the main differences between perfume nerds and normal people: the latter almost never wear scents they don’t like :)

Sampling Corvin’s Smoked Apple from Solstice Scents which is just about exactly as named but the smoke might be a little too heavy for me. Reminds me of the time at college where there was some fall celebration that involved making applesauce in a pot over a bonfire

Found a sample of Sammarco’s Bond-T last night, and since the weather finally turned cold(er) it’s smelling great.

Maybe half credit for this week’s theme? It’s not savory, but the dark chocolate is not very sweet either…

I tried to be on theme in Providence Perfume Co’s Bay Rum, but the lime and allspice give it a kind of cola feeling so I don’t think it’s really savory. Very pleasant though!

I honestly don’t know what bay smells/tastes like; I dutifully put bay leaves into recipes that call for them but can’t pick out the flavor. I think I might make myself a cup of bay leaf tea just to try to figure it out!

This may sound disgusting but it gives food with bay leaves have that extra character. To me, dried bay leaves taste like what musty wood smells like. My mom used to make pork stewed in bay leaves and whole peppercorns.

When I smelled fresh bay leaves in Trinidad, I realized what the dry ones were supposed to smell/taste like and don’t imo.

Another cool, sunny morning. My puppy is drving me crazy by suddenly becoming a finicky eater. Sigh. She did so well for the first month and now I can’t get her to eat anything she’s previously been enjoying.

Anyway, I’m wearing Salome, which is always satisfying.

Otto Mi Gato does that on the reg. The home cooked chicken I’ve been prepping for the last month or so is no longer edible, apparently. He has a lot more willpower than I do, so I will eventually end up tying myself in knots trying to find something that he will eat that isn’t primarily cornmeal.

She’s been on a raw diet since weaning and up until the past week ate it with no problem. Not sure why all of a sudden it’s unacceptable. She will eat Stella & Chewy’s freeze-dried raw when she gets quite hungry, but the frozen raw is better for her. Of course if she won’t eat it then it’s of no value. Will discuss with the vet tomorrow.

I’m less familiar with puppies, so I’ll ask: can’t you just wait until she gets hungry? Are healthy puppies known to starve while having food accessible?

My cat does this on the regular. The only time he’ll eat chicken is when I’ve made soup stock, he’ll deign to have some white meat but only just after I’ve deboned the chicken. OTOH, the dog is a walking stomach. I think she’d eat lettuce if I put it in her dish.

The Body Shop Shea edt + Indigo Wild Zum Mist in Sandalwood Citrus.

The Shea edt is nutty with a slightly anisic/licorice note. Does that count as savory? I don’t know, but I’m loving the combination.

SotD is Safran Troublant, because hajusuuri wore it yesterday, which reminded me that I have a decant from the recent swapmeet. I may just do swapmeet scents all week! Has that ever been a cp? Wear your favorite swapmeet perfume?

I am home again today with my pink eye. When I got up this morning I asked my husband how it looked and his response was, “oh god. it’s bad.” Lol. I appreciate his brutal honesty, truly I do.
The sun is actually out today! I feel so inspired I may get some overdue housework done. It’s currently only in the teens here, but if it warms up I need to get out for a walk and soak up some vitamin D.

Robin, I bet you smell great! I should go up to Berkeley and give that one a sniff.

Moonlight Patchouli for me. Not very sweet, but very comforting. I need it to get through another day of high stress at work + painful throat because of the poor air quality in CA. Maybe going to Boise for work tomorrow isn’t such a bad thing; I’ll give my respiratory system a break.

I hear you on the air quality :(. But you smell great!

Unless you’ve done it before, make sure to try Cuir Gardenia and Honey Blossom while you’re at Berkeley. I wonder if there will be an open house this year in December.

(It feels uncomfortable to complain about my air quality when so many people are losing their homes and property and sometimes more, but with each passing day, my lungs are getting sadder :( as I’m sure most people’s are. I don’t even have an outdoor job, thank goodness.)

Hey Koyel, if you’re in the SF/Bay area, did you know Mandy Aftel does an open house at her Berkeley home each December? If you haven’t made it, do try to as it’s a real treat. Her perfume organ is spectacular.

Ah! I did not know. I went to her museum last year, but my nose was so overwhelmed by the museum that I didn’t have nose space for her perfumes. I’ll see if I can go! (I’m South Bay, which is almost as far from Berkeley as it is possible to be in the Bay Area, but still.)

RIP Stan Lee ???? I thought he might live forever!
SOTD Magie Noire current EDT from a small decant I got from the Bay after trying it at Macy’s last week. I’m enjoying it and I do think the name suits it. Dark green, herbal, honeyed concoction with maybe a bit of incense and dried red rose petals. Also just a tad soapy. The vintage was too bitter for me, but this one works!

Very cheerful teapot and a nice homage, Robin.

We’ve been having some typical fall day with some showers interspaced with sunny white clouds weather and quite mild. And I pulled out my bottle of vintage Caleche EDT, it appealed a great deal and didn’t disappoint, I also have the extrait but wanted to remain understated for the office.

I have a story! My friend was over when I opened your package with Jungle l’Elephant in it, so I spritzed some on myself and passed it to her to try on. She’s interested in perfumes, but only has two bottles, and really just wears one at a time for weeks. But she looked at the Jungle bottle and said, “I think I had a mini of this in high school.” She sprayed herself, then went home a few hours later. That night, she texted me to tell me that the scent was bringing back all kinds of high school memories and that she was sure she had worn a mini of Jungle dry as a kid :)

It’s very understated isn’t it? That’s what I love about it though. It doesn’t shout “Look at me!” while banging a metal pot with a spoon. It just says, “Hey, good to see you!” and modestly averts his/her eyes while giving a shy smile.

    Rose, cardamom, sandalwood, spices!

Black Orchid at nuclear levels was a co-worker’s signature scent. I then introduced her to niche and she fell in love with FM Portrait of a Lady and she wafted in a cloud of it for a while. Now, she could not even tell me what she’s wearing!

I’m having a good day with some fun clothes shopping and a nice meal out of lemon pasta. My SOTD is Le Labo Poivre 23. It’s pretty peppery at first. I think it counts, although in the drydown the vanilla dominates. Still, I wouldn’t call it sweet. Lots of labdanum too. Very dark and gray here.

I lurves lemon pasta-I only discovered it last year when we went to eat with some friends and one person ordered it. I thought it sounded boring but his was the tastiest of anyone’s order!
I like Poivre-smelling good! The peppery opening is my favorite part.
