Monday scent of the day 10/29

Posted by Robin on 29 October 2018 228 Comments

Monday, plus happy National Cat Day! What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in good old Prada Candy.

Reminder: 11/2 will be To Autumn Friday. Wear a fragrance that matches John Keats, To Autumn. Suggested by happy888cat.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the Prada Flame sandals are $1,100 at Saks.

It’s been a year and a half my cat died, I miss her so much but I know she’s in Heaven. She was a princess.

I’m wearing Serge Lutens Feminite du bois

Awwh thank you SmokeyToes! It was hard, she was everything to me. I found this page online about cats and dogs in Heaven, that helped me a lot:

        https://www.quora.com/My-cat-died-today-Will-she-be-in-heaven-now

Shiseido Feminite pure parfum must be Heaven too :-)

Aw so sorry about your kitty. I had to put mine down around a year and a half ago as well. She was my loving companion for nearly 14 years. But she had diabetes and was really sick. My then husband and I were going through a divorce and we took her to the animal hospital together to put her down. That was quite a low point.
I like to think that she is is playing happily with your loved one in kitty heaven.

Oh hello, I’ll take a pair of those sandals and while you’re at it a palanquin so I don’t have to walk, please and thank you.

Tyrannosaurus Rex today. RRargh! I *almost* felt sorry for my fellow commuters but I ended up sitting next to a guy who clearly thought that by plunking himself down spreadeagled in the middle seat of a 3-seat row, he wouldn’t have to share. Now that is space I don’t mind invading. Evil commuting laugh.

I am in a cloud of fluffy amber- Byredo 1996 on the left arm and Teo Cabanel Barkhane on the right one. Although 1996 is taking over with its sillage, I like Barkhane much more for its complexity and composition- adding to my to get a decant list. I only have enough for one more wearing left and will be thunking my little decant, darn it!
These shoes are just plain ugly, I can’t imagine anyone wearing them and the price… YUCK!

The shoes came out first in 2012 and were apparently a hit. This year you can get them in a bunch of colors and they are said to be selling out quickly.

Perfume is supposed to be the aspirational product for many fashion brands but it is often the only thing I want from the line ;-)

Anyone knows what happened to Teo Cabanel brand? The website says that they are temporarily closed, Luckyscent doesn’t carry the line anymore. I hope that they are still in business…
It always happens to me- I fall for the discontinued fragrances or something impossible to find, as I never try new releases ( I normally test smth thats been on the market 3-4 years). Maybe I should change my strategy and start ordering samples of new stuff?
The problem is I am too picky and from the sea samples I might love/like only one or two.

Hi Glannys! Would you recommend By Killian fragrances? I can get a floral sample pack for a reasonable price, but -again- no testers available where I live. I’ve tried MFK fragrances and feel that they “screech”. (So, agreement with whoever said they did not like Baccarat Rouge, when that topic came up recently!). Byredo is also more miss for me, but Heeley I do like. If this gives you an idea of where my tastes lie!

Chiming in to say that I like several BK fragrances very much (esp earlier ones) and don’t find them screechy (ITA about several MFKs). However, I do think they are very over-priced.

If you can get them for a reasonable price, I’d say go for it.
I only sampled a few MFK scents and have mixed feelings about this house so far. I have tried about ten Byredo scents, and I do not think they make my kind of scents (though I feel oddly intrigued by Byredo, so I still sample some of their scents now and then).
By Kilian’s florals are made in a different style. My favorites are Sweet Redemption and Beyond Love, because they are heady and creamy. I ocassionally enjoy Taste of Heaven and Love and Tears, but they have some screechiness in them, in my opinion.

SOTD is Mona di Orio Carnation. Soft musks with a start that really does remind me of carnations. Not carnations as in the clove perfume note, but the herby smell of carnations when you water them. (I grow carnations in between my roses and it seems to be a match made in heaven, as the roses thrive.)

Wearing Histoires de Parfums 1740, which suits the sudden coldish weather we are having in the Netherlands. It seemed summer only a few days ago, oh well, time to start wearing those scarves and thick coats again.

Kenzo Amour this morning as I had an early dentist appointment for a teeth cleaning. I survived.

Cats are celebrating in the only way they know how…stretching out across half the couch and snoozing.

Enabler pin goes to Ihadanidea on Saturday at Sniffapalooza. She fell for Lancôme Jasmins Marzipane and got a travel size spray, which I sprayed on myself (along with a multitude of other scents). Kept shoving my face in my arm the rest of the day, so I backtracked to Bergdorf’s on my way home and got one for myself.

Really liked a lot of the Bottega Veneta Parco Palladiano scents. Out of my price range, but a decant would be nice….

Enjoyed Tom Ford’s Lost Cherry as a scent…a very familiar cherry almond. But it’s not something I’d want to wear…maybe a room spray.

It was fun, more as a catch up with friends than for actual sniffing. (Gift bag was very nice, though) The Goutal folks did a very nice presentation in their shop….they always do something special. The new Atelier boutique on Madison is lovely. We did find out that Sous Le Toit is limited. That store doesn’t carry it (other than a single 30 ml bottle) – only the downtown one does.

Nothing really tempted me (at least nothing affordable; price often removes temptation…)

One SA amused me mightily, but only because I knew everything he was saying was just plain BS. I would never purchase from him.

Proud to have earned my enabler pin! I am still so pleasantly surprised that a house like Lancome knew to do travel sized bottles, and at such a reasonable price. I’m on a budget as I save like crazy to move, but even I could do $35 for 14 ml, especially at that price.

Lovestosmellgood, in terms of the scent – it is completely unlike anything else I own or am usually drawn to, but it’s just so beautifully done. It’s a warm, sweet jasmine vanilla that just seems to last and last, even on my scent-eating skin. And I’m not even the biggest fan of either of those notes, but it works. I remember the Guide calling something a “symphonic” floral once, and to me, that applies to this.

Were cost no object I would absolutely buy a full bottle. But I just really love that Lancome seems to have actually listened to the consumer and provided a smaller, travel-sized bottle, which is rare for the big department store brands, I’ve found. (Though perhaps things have changed since I’ve been out of the loop…)

wow….florals are hard for me, but I love Songes so there you have it.
I will have to sniff this one
How is the projection on this one? close to the skin?

For the record, I am not a floral person, save for some roses.

Regarding projection, my skin eats scent, so I’m not a good person to ask. (Unless I douse myself or spray in my hair, most people don’t really smell me.) LizzieB should hopefully be able to give you a normal-skinned person’s assessment :)

Ugh, dang, yes. I have been trying to track my SOTD all year, and the sad truth is that there are months when I sample many more days than I “wear” perfume! Madness, I know. (Working from home as much as I do… 4 days out of 5… doesn’t help.)

To all the cats I’ve loved before…both of them grew up with big, vicious Rottweilers, and the cats ruled the roost (no, in reality, the cockatiel ruled the roost. He even ruled my fiancé at the time. Needless to say, the F hated that bird). T-Rex is part cat I’m sure. The way she uses her paws is very catlike. Thankfully she doesn’t use a litterbox that needs to be cleaned.

In SSS Equestrian today for the yummy fall vibe. Busy day today after sleeping the last 20 out of 24 hours. I’m feeling a bit of energy slowly returning…

For an oil change and light bulb replacement????????‍♀️) and all the people in the waiting room and the counter staff were all over her. She was in heaven, eyes half closed in ecstasy, tail thumping furiously, as all the bipedals ohh’d and ahh’d over her. She went from person to person, and then repeated the circle until it was time to leave. She didn’t want to go and very much wishes I were more social ????

Eau de merveilles today, but at the moment I can only smell the fragrance of the lady sitting next to me on the bus. It smells so familiar, but I just can’t identify it, it’s bugging me a lot.

I haven’t tried layering fragrance yet, but I keep thinking I should give it a go. What would you recommend with EdM?

You can sort of get a hint of what layers well by looking at the flankers — you can rev up the citrus or the amber, those are the easy routes. It layers nicely with Terre d’Hermes too.

The problem with layering EdM to give it more presence, though, is I find many other fragrances eat it right up.

I think neroli goes nicely with EdM, warms it up in a sunny way. Amber or frankinense, or myrrh for a snugglier warmth. Something like Daim Blond , or if you have any Jo Malone scents you could try those as they are quite light…or even some of the Hermes Jardins like Monsieur Li or the Rooftop one ( forget the name). Go big on the EdM and use the layer perfume like a seasoning, adding more for taste.

Awesome, thanks! I have some neroli centered options, I’ll definitely try those. I might also have light frankinsence samples, I’ll have to check.

I bought mine at Ulta, IIRC. QVC does a lot of Philosophy holiday sets, too, and at a better price. Not sure if you can buy the body stuff separately in this scent. Mine is in the tub, and came with a large pump bottle of the body wash/shampoo, and the perfume. If you want just the body cream, your best bet may be going to their website to see if it’s available independent of the other stuff.

Ooooh NST fam. How I have missed you. I hope you’ve all been well.

Went to Sniffapalooza this weekend and hung with the wonderful LizzieB, Hajusuuri and also a lovely friend whose NST handle escapes me at the moment because I can only think of her real name – whoops! (I HAVE been gone a while, haven’t I?) It was such a lovely way to rejoin the community, and I swore I would login today and visit you all.

I bought a travel size of Jasmin Marzipan by Lancome – only $35 for 14 ml! Why don’t they all make travel sizes like this?? I’m not buying anything right now but that one is so pretty I just had to, and it was so reasonable.

My new job (got promoted about six months ago) requires a lot of time during the day so it’s hard to visit here, but I’m determined to make the time because this community adds so much to my daily life when I make the time.

In any case, going to catch up in a moment and read all the above comments, but just had to say hi as soon as I got the chance!

Those shoes make me think I’d snag my nylons in a hot minute.

Ah, yeah, every day is cat day here. Gave my not-so-well cat Cole his wet food this morning (we’re trying anything to get him to eat), while very-well-thank-you cat Kooky had a spaz at the door, wanting to get in there & hoover that yummy stuff. I let Kooky join in after a while, because that induces Cole to actually eat more since heyyyyy…. not fair if Kooky gets some :)

Having an odd work day. Jumped in the car to drive in to work, discovered my normally awful commute was projected to be awful++ which would make me way late for my first meeting, so back in the house to do early meetings from home. AND our computers have been dead since Friday, still not working, so if I drive in will anyone be there?? hmm

SOTD is Xinu Copala which is yummy yummy vanilla incense.

    Meanwhile, in Portland:

    1) It feels like we got the remnants of a typhoon here this weekend: sustained bursts of very hard rain, even some hail, followed by clear skies for a couple of hours before starting up again.
The temps have been mild- so the herbs have actually kept going, with the parsley, marjoram and thyme actually spreading and showing real vigor and the basil is still putting out leaves, but these leaves are very strong and fragrant in flavor. My lemongrass has gone bonkers and the mint is threaten to escape out of the pots.
Given the rainy weather, I made banana muffins with cinnamon streusel, a batch of peanut sauce with basil and lemongrass, and a nice pot of homemade chicken soup with the squash, beans and herbs from outside.

    2) Am in very lovely Bourcheron and Karma body cream.

Yes, we have been chilly at night but no frost yet. So most of the herbs are still going, and actually spreading due to mild, wet temps right now. Am still getting squash flowers and green tomatoes, too.

SOTD Eau Sacree by Heeley. Smells like Haribo CocaCola gums mixed with spruce bath gel and a bit of incense. Very wearable. My BF does not smell Coke at all.

Wish i could have a cat again, but BF is allergic. Had a beautiful British Shorthair once, he was called Sir Archibald, which fitted his personality perfectly….

Your SOTD sounds perfectly weird :) I’ve never tried anything by Heeley, but now I’d like to!

Joining you in wishing for a feline companion. I used to have a *very* rambunctious kitten who was not well-suited to life in my small, city apartment. She’s now a happy outdoor cat, living on 40+ acres (plus a heated garage!) in rural MI with my bf’s parents. While I don’t miss her scratching up the carpet, the couch, the blinds, and my arms and legs… I do miss her sweet face and noisy purr :)

Helloooo from America, friends! I’m back from vacation, and California is SO much warmer than Scandinavia (shocker). I’m in By Kilian Straight to Heaven. I wanted to wear Winter Woods and couldn’t find it quickly, but I’ve now killed my decant of StH, which is always satisfying, and besides, I smell pretty nice and warm.

Splitmeet people: Thanks for paying me! It was far too optimistic to think that I’d be able to start decanting the day I got back (last night). I’ll get to decanting asap and mail out hopefully by the end of this week :)

Visited Gent (Belgium) with friends, made some drawings, helped my brother in law with the making of a video, celebrated my niece’s 5th birthday…

It´s suddenly very cold isn´t it? I just need a little time to adjust. My neighbour said, quite rightly too, that we’ve gone from not wearing a coat at all to wearing a full winter coat.

Love Sycomore, can’t justify a purchase though, it’s very close to Encre Noir which I already have a bottle of.

Yes Sycomore is very close to Encre Noir. But I dont know if thats true for the edp. Some people say its quite different from the edt…

I just walked home from local bar to my house, so glad it was only a 3 minute walk, its almost freezing right now. ????

I am matching the moss reference in the poem with Mitsouko and will see how that goes. Will switch to bracken later. I would like something with a bit of apple. Yesterday in the graveyard I noticed that the holly trees are in flower. Small white clusters. I had never smelled holly flowers and now I know why…health and safety…but if you can negotiate the prickles they are actually quite sweet scented , pollen . I’m guessing your holly will be getting berries about now? Wet and cold and gloomy here.

Our holly does not have red berries yet! And you put me to shame, I have literally never noticed its flowers. It is behind a mock orange and my absolute favorite, a Chionanthus virginicus fringe tree (I planted one 20 years ago and wish I’d planted tons of them), and they are all I look for in spring. Once they stop I don’t even look at that side of the house. I will have to see if I can remember to look next year.

I had never noticed the flowers either – it’s only because my graveyard walks are so slow and meandering that I noticed them this time. They are quite small and difficult to get at. I am looking up your chionanthus virginicus to see if I know it.

Everyday is cat day at my place. I adore my beautiful 16 year old kitten and dread the day she’ll have to go. She’s the most affectionate cat I’ve ever known and follows me around from room to room, and snuggles in as close as she can whenever I sit down. Today she smells of Misia since its my day off and it is wet and miserable outside so we’re doing a lot of snuggle time today.

I just got my “Otherland” candle in the mail today. Immediately lit it up and it smells so beautiful! The one I got was “Kindling” as reviewed by Kevin a couple days ago. It’s not as smokey as I had thought it would be. Seems to have a bit of a gourmand vibe to it. The notes are written on the lid, one of them is “wool blanket”. It really is a relaxing and comforting scent for this gray rainy day.

SOTD: Ambre Sultan. This one is so super cozy. I was thinking about how it’s my favorite Serge frag. The kind of slightly candied herbal liquor quality that SL does so well lends itself beautifully to amber. Really appreciating this one. Just a note, I bought it about four years ago and it’s about a third emptied, but the color of the perfume has deepened to a beautiful dark brown. As I understand it, this is natural in perfumes that have quality ingredients. The scent has not changed, just the appearance.

    Hello Y’all….late today!

Scentless today! Had an apt this morning that rushed the morning, so didn’t take the time to find a scent. Plus I was too busy smacking my son with a pool noodle to get him out of bed…. :)

I’ve been trying some new Luckyscent samples, and tried some Mancera Purple Flowers last night at bedtime. WOW! Beautiful, lush scent…if the price was in my range I would buy a FB. Hoping Santa Hubby sees it on my wishlist!

Back to playing around in the Sample Stash. SOTD = Hermes Eau de Neroli Dore EdC. Today it had a giant wallop of bergamot to start with, then pretty florals. I think it may have been a little too sheer for the day’s weather.

My SOTE is Samsara EDT. I haven’t worn this for awhile; the sandalwood is coming through quite nicely tonight. It could be the humidity in the air.

Like others have said, its cat day every day, all the time. We had our cat for 14 years; he certainly ruled the roost. He made us laugh every day, such a goof-ball. His head was about the size of a perfect Mac apple, so he got a nickname of “Apple Head”, among others.
