Thursday scent of the day 10/4

Posted by Robin on 4 October 2018 263 Comments

Almost-Friday, Taco Day and Vodka Day! It's also World Animal Day, and if you live in Sweden, Cinnamon Roll Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

I made a minor switch, to good old Prada Amber Pour Homme.

Reminder: 10/5 is International Teachers Day. Pick a fragrance that honors a teacher, in one way or another.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Robin, you triggered a lemming to wear something I actually own.
Wearing Prada Infusion d’Iris Absolue, and I smell wonderful.

    Good day everyone!

I’m in Nu today, which I am really enjoying. Peppery and woody, and perfectly dry. Even though I love the bottle, I’m nervous to pull it out; I’d hate to scratch it!

Does that bottle scratch? I guess it looks like it would but I never thought about it.

Yes, sadly. It’s just coated plastic. I saw a tester once that looked like a palm-reading chart.

The plastic box doesn’t hold up much better either, honestly but that wouldn’t break my heart.

Way back when I only had < 20 bottles, I considered keeping my bottles pristine. Looking at my Kelly Caleche bottle, I thought that the little lock would get scratched up every time I wore it. What did I do? I wrapped the little lock with plastic wrap and went on to finish the bottle. Look ma, no scratches!

I don’t try too hard but for done reason, the Nu bottle really gets to me. Maybe because it doesn’t come in that bottle anymore, but I want to keep it nice!

I’ll never forget dropping my bottle of Brin de Reglisse. I about had a heart attack!

    SotD = MEM

😀 ha! Just remembered that my son called me “mem” instead of “mama” when he was a little guy, lol. Maybe that’s why this one is extra special to me. Also the lavender plus 1000 other things it reminds me of never fail to mesmerize me.

+1 to all the things! especially to Almost-Friday, woot woot!

SoCal life means we always have tortillas in the house. Anything can be wrapped in a tortilla soTaco Day is any day here. I had the best fish tacos of my life a few weeks ago from a food truck in the parking lot of a Home Depot. Vodka Day?!!? Though I don’t indulge, I appreciate the cultural significance. People gotta ferment stuff, it’s part of human history.

World Animal Day is awesome and should be an every day thing. Animals need us, we need them.

If I lived in Sweden every day would also be Cinnamon Roll Day. Anyone know if IKEA still sells cinnamon rolls? Gah, those were so good and made the drive home sticky sweet. As luck would have it, I have homemade cinnamon rolls on my kitchen counter thanks to my sister. YUM.

I so miss fish tacos! You can get reasonably decent ones here now, I guess, but easily the best I ever had were in Baja, many many moons ago, at a street stand.

    Hi NSTers!

I have a mini bottle of Grey Flannel up for grabs in the freebiemeet, if anyone’s interested. Really wanted to like it, but the violet leaf in the top notes is just too harsh for me. The drydown, though, is a much softer, slightly powdery violet.

Today’s SOTD is Kiehl’s Original Musk with lemon-sage scented lotion.

Going a little crazy with noise here today: at the back by bedroom and study windows is the chap cutting down brush, trees, overgrown weeds in the churchyard, and in front of my flat by the sitting room the small joinery business is running two big saws today. Everywhere in the middle is rattling between the two sounds and I can’t find my noise-cancelling ear phones. Argh.

Escape to the pool? Screaming children.
    Oh well.
Clearly it wasn’t going to be a day to concentrate on complicated things.

But Dryad today–perfect for a bright, blustery autumn day. Edinburgh is starting to get its golden finery on, particularly in the low afternoon light when everything just glows.

Oh, dear, that sounds awful. I hate that kind of noise pollution. Here where I live there are often yard men going around with those horridly loud leaf blowers. They’re the absolute worst imho. (Well except for jack-hammers I guess.) Hope it eases off soon.

oh. Yes. I had forgotten the jack hammers! (That was only brief, and should be over tomorrow… some investigation going on a building site close by).

I found the ear phones. They are charging over night. If they aren’t enough… I’ll head out to somewhere quite, like a major traffic intersection 😉

Sitting here waiting for new couch to be delivered and ????????fit through the door. They’re supposed to come by 12:30…. ( I dreamt about couch deliveries last night…good grief.)

Wearing Chanel Coromandel from a decant. Been a while. I do like this, although I have to say today is a tough one. I’ve gone through at least six tissues from sneezing and blowing my nose this morning. Could be dust from moving stuff around and vacuuming in prep for the couch.

Or, I need to start using my local honey that’s supposed to target fall allergies.

I had troubles with Coromandel. I liked it for about 15 minutes, or if it was about 3 feet away from me. After a while, the musky chocolate drydown would give me big headaches, like I was wearing a mohair turtleneck that was too tight. On paper I liked it very much. I find if I am looking for a patchouli type thing, I can find it elsewhere by either just layering a small bit of patchouli e/o with some vanilla fragrance, or the Jessica Simpson Fancy Nights, which is a very light version of the same. Of course, it could just be the dust. 😉

????????????????????????. The couch arrived (two hours later than the window I was given). It fit! The delivery guys were saying it didn’t fit in the freight elevator… the building guy was rolling his eyes because he knew it would. My husband went down and supervised. They got it in and it came through our apt door easily… it looks great and we are thrilled! Old couch will be removed tomorrow. Goodbye old friend. You served us well, but you are too broken down to continue in service….

Shalimar again. Just because it comforts me.

Mini movie review for A Star is Born: Even if you don’t particularly care about the cast themselves, it is a beautifully acted and directed movie and the music is soooo good. The acting was so wonderful- so much so that the depiction of substance abuse was painful for me to watch part of the time because it mirrored someone from my past who acted almost just like that character. Just a beautiful, well done, truthful movie.

You smell great, and thank you for this review! When you mentioned the movie yesterday I looked it up and asked some friends to see it this weekend – because I live under a rock, I hadn’t heard about this movie before your post. there appears to be 3 previous versions – I started watching the first last night – the one from 1937 with Janet Gaynor and Frederic March. I also did a deep-ish dive into Bradley Cooper, who grew up not too far away from where I live now. I love that he learned French in college, to the extent that he’s able to take interviews in French.

Sotd is Superstitious. I smell glorious! My son is a very picky eater, and for 16 years would not try a cinnamon roll. Last month I brought some home with a ton of icing. As I was eating one, he says uh… what is that? I looked him right in the eye and said it’s a donut, would you like one? He said ok, ate one, and declared it to be good. Ha! Of course I then told him it was a cinnamon roll. ????

My brother insisted he hated onions when he was a kid. So my mom would just tell him they were celery if he asked about something in his dinner. The best part? For one of his birthdays he requested “French Celery Soup”.

I went to the gym this morning and forgot to take any perfume with me, so I’m scent-less. But I wanted to recommend the new (?) Lush Ectoplasm shower gel: it looks neon green, so might not necessarily be something sophisticated people like you gravitate towards, but it has a really nice sweet citrus (grapefruit, tangerine and mandarin, according to the web site) scent. It both feels and smells creamy and leaves the skin wonderfully soft.

Probably. I was thinking of finding out how much just a bottle of Lounging Around (version B) edp would be, without the extrait and body butter that came with Slinky Carnation. I’ve only had it less than a month so I’m nowhere near having to worry about getting a refill. If you’re ever in Boston, drop me a line if you want to sniff it (Screen name is yahoo address)

SOTD = Prada Infusion d’Iris Absolue

I was inspired by Robin wearing it 3 days in a row. I do love it! It’s probably the only perfume I asked for the biggest size available.

Yesterday, I got a text from X bank saying my account was locked and a 2nd text where I have to tap to open. I di not have an account at X Bank but my mom does. Always wary of phishing / scams, I did not tap the 2nd text. I called the bank as soon as I got home and the CSR asked from where I received the text. I rattled it off, including 10-digit number. The CSR then said I should delete the texts because texts from X Bank only comes from a 6-digit code. Lesson learned – follow up on messages, but do not be too quick to follow instructions. Do not click on links or images in text messages unless you are expecting such things.

On a different but related note, companies have gotten so sophisticated that they can spoof an area code and local code to make it look like someone from your township is calling you. I never answer these calls. If they are important enough, they will leave a message.

Bleah on those phone calls! I have specific ring tones for doctors, the vet, the dentist, and relatives. If my phone is chiming on its default ringer, that tells me that the call is probably not worth picking up 99% of the time. And like you said, if it is important, whoever it is will leave a message.

Also, for people who are addicted to lippies- I have fallen in love with Revlon cushion kiss lip stains. They’re cheap and wonderful. I’ll be picking up a few more colors today. I have naughty mauve and it’s the perfect “my lips but better” shade for my coloring.

Also: as I was walking out to my van, I had a close encounter with World Animal Day. I was heading to the office to pick up my mail, and as I was descending the stairs, I saw a huge black blur woosh by my apartment building. The complex is in a very busy business district with 6 lane streets in all sides. I called to the huge black blur, and it did an about face and bounded up the stairs at me. It was a beautiful Shepard mix, about 6 months old, gangly and goofy, no tags, no chip, no collar, not neutered. Long story short, I got a leash on him, took him to the office, and was told he did not belong to any renter. Called animal control, which I was told is a “no kill” county shelter here in Reno, and off he went. 3 people in the office were dithering about keeping him, and one girl did get his number so she could follow up to see if anyone claimed him. Gorgeous dog, great temperament, just needed food, love, and a bit of training. Can’t believe he hadn’t got run over by a car. I guess it’s a good thing I woke up late????????

I really don’t know how he got here. There no close residential area and the traffic around this complex is ridiculous. If I didn’t live out of a van most of the year, I would have kept him. Super sweet dog.

Yesterday was my birthday and my husband got me a Le Labo sampler set to celebrate. I tried the much-hyped Santal last night and while I liked it I much prefer Tam Dao. Today I’m trying the Rose and really enjoying it. They included a sample of Rose scented detergent as well – will try that out soon!

Thanks to people who gave me well wishes for my dentist’s visit yesterday. It wasn’t TOO bad. After long neglecting my teeth, I found a dentist who is caring and kind, and I even can get valium for major things! It’s scary for me due to a previous real trauma at the hands of the evil man dentist. Now I will only go to a woman dentist (smaller hands). SOTD is Zoologist Elephant, kind of at random. It’s one I disliked at first but when you’ve had it on awhile it does morph and is more gentle and almost sweet, and intriguing. I’m going out soon for lunch at the Menil Bistro and to visit the just-recently-reopened Menil Collection here in Houston–it was closed almost a year I think for restoration/renovation. Can’t wait to see the new installations. It’s still grotesquely hot and humid here–high 90 today. Ugh.

A kind, thoughtful dentist is the best.
I have similar dentist issues, but once i found one i trust (mine is male, but so pleasant, considerate, smart and skilled) i wont go elsewhere. Been seeing him since 2001! Back then he would loan you his ipod so you could listen to music instead of that hirrible drill sound. He does sedation too, which makes the world of difference!
It’s a great feeling to be on top of your dental health, with minimal fear 🙂

In OJ Tolu, from a sample. It’s pretty nice, a like for sure, but perhaps not a love. Does it have a cardamon note? I feel like it does. My daughter b-day today, which meant that she slept little and has been on an anticipation high for the past week – oh the days when our birthdays were such glorious occasions for us!

You’re having a Prada week, Robin, I don’t know if you also like l’Eau Ambree.

Inspired by Undina and Teainthegarden I am wearing Yves Rocher today, Folies de Saisons Delires d’Automne so very appropriate for October. I picked this up for the proverbial song and it is a balsamic, vanillic, spicy little number, if you come across it don’t overlook it, it really is good.

I’m wearing my 1st purchase of the new quarter ????: Atrium perfume oil by Cavern NY-locally “grown”. They sell it in a coffee place in my hood that also sells fancy plants, fancy tea, ceramics, candles, body products etc. The woman ahead of me was buying a mini potted pineapple plant!
Anyway, it’s a little warm for this scent today but it’s fairly soft and low projection so it’s working out.
Tobacco, iris, sandalwood, cedar, vanilla. Smells a bit campfire smoky with a lightly sweet edge mingled with a bit of wood. This will be very cozy if cool weather ever shows up!

Late as usual! I wore Un Air de Bretagne from a swap meet decant, but I can’t smell it on me anymore. I do like it, but I probably won’t seek out more after this little decant is gone.

Last night I tested PdN Cap Neroli and Neroli Intense. Cap Neroli reminds me of Tocca Stella, and I already have a bottle of Stella. I liked Neroli Intense, but I didn’t find it to be intense, at least not from the dabber sample. I’ll have to try it another couple times to figure out if I need more than my sample.
