Wednesday scent of the day 10/3

Posted by Robin on 3 October 2018 300 Comments

Happy Hump Day! And don't forget, the freebiemeet is still going. What fragrance are you wearing?

Me: Prada Infusion d’Iris Absolue, day 3.

Reminder: 10/5 is International Teachers Day. Pick a fragrance that honors a teacher, in one way or another.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the Prada Embellished Robot Leather Sneakers are $750.

Another round of Cèdre Sambac, I enjoyed it so much yesterday. It’s quite potent and lon-lasting for a Hermessence.

I’m pretty sure it’s the only Hermessence I haven’t sniffed yet! I always dress so grubbily nowadays that when I do find myself near an Hermes shop, I feel too self-conscious to go in.

Haha. That’s especially true where I live, in Silicon Valley, where all these millionaires walk around in sweatshirts and tattered jeans :) I’ve often wanted to go to fancy open houses under the same pretense.

I have a funny story about that scent.
A while ago I visited the Hermes store in Antwerp. I wanted to try Cedre sambac but I forgot the name.

So I asked the sales lady for one of the recent Hermessencd releases that contains a prominent jasmine note.

She had no clue. I ended up checking the bottles myseld and when I saw Sambac written on one of them, I knew I found it haha.

I tried it on, and liked it, but it was very warm that day, the heat seemed to amp up the sweetness to the max.

I should pull out my sample of this. I thought U would like Myrrh Elegantine but no and I don’t remember why and don’t wish to waste skin time on it.

I just thought Myrrhe Églantine was uninteresting on me, I like heavier-duty rose scents. The SA did give me a sample and recommended it layered with Agar Ébène, which I haven’t tried yet.

I am going to join the Infusion d’Iris party so that is my SOTD

Mr L is at the hospital today having a procedure done so if you could muster up some good energy and send some this way. I will be MIA from NST while he is recovering (and on top of that I will be taking care of 2 little ones). Good Grief Charlie Brown…

My freebies are still up if there is any one who wants to come fetch them.

    Have a fragrant day everyone!

Robin, I’m so impressed with your day 3 of PdI Absolue! It must really be hitting the spot.
I’m in PoaL today. So in love. Thinking about buying a giant bottle for the splitmeet. And if there are no takers, I’ll be just fine with having it all to myself. I recently discovered that 5 hours after spraying, it blooms beautifully during hot yoga class. ????

I’ve just gotten started with yoga. I’m obsessed. Started a 30-day challenge at my studio. Yoga every day this month. We’ll see how that goes. I was already tempted to skip yesterday. ????

They do. They have a good range of classes from straight meditation and sleepy yoga on up. ???? Gonna try to stay sensible and sane.

I love PoaL and every time I wear it I’m impressed with its tenacity.
Good luck with your challenge (though I think that 30 days of hot yoga is a little too much). Just don’t push yourself too much: it’s more important to do it right then to do everything, so give yourself some rest during the class if you feel overwhelmed.

I’m in MDCI Promesse de l’Aube, with a near thunk of my tiny, tiny sample. I finally bit the bullet and ordered a bottle last night after dithering for a while, and threw a bottle of Kyoto onto the order for good measure, thus getting my fourth quarter confessables list going early and in style. :)

SOTD is Bvlgari’s Au the Blanc. My allergies are off the charts today.

Today’s smoothie is spinach/kefir/chocolate/banana/PB. It has more calories than I’d like but chocolate has antioxidants.
Can I consider this smoothie calorie-neutral?

    Those sneakers are super cute!

So sorry you have allergies, and so late in the year too. Consider the smoothie as medicine, so calorie-neutral imo.
You smell understated and pulled together, meanwhile.

Thanks re: allergies, this is really unusual for me – my allergy schedule is normally Feb/March.
I do love Au the Blanc, it’s a nice balance between musk and ambrette seed. It was my wedding-day perfume, so the hubby always leans in when he smells this one. :)

Dear NSTers, thank you for the birthday wishes and kind words yesterday. I had a good cry as I read them. And it was a sweet day spent connecting with people like you who have helped me.

At work I shared with a few people my experiences over the past year. Yesterday a colleague asked me to talk with her because she suspects her young adult son is having psychiatric difficulties. Speaking up and speaking for those with mental illness is hard but so very very important.

    Happy Wednesday, y’all!

I am wearing Smell Bent Prairie Nymph for the first time in a while. I actually bought a full bottle of this, when Brent was having a sale. I love the honey and beeswax in this scent. Honey has become one of my favorite notes. I wish I could find a warm weather scent that had lots of honey. I find that if I wear one of my honey fragrances during the summer they are just too cloying. Any suggestions?

I haven’t tried Prairie Nymph but I love Gimel a Break which is also a honey – this must be a note Smell Bent does particularly well! I can’t think of any summery honeys though… all the ones I know are cozy

I love Prairie Nymph! I have a number of honey scents in the collection, but most of them are heavier. Library of Flowers Honeycomb is an exception – soft honey and lightly floral.

Demeter has Beeswax which is pretty good.

I don’t think my decants are evaporating much but I realized it didn’t make sense to keep 2-3 ml of perfumes that I do not plan to replenish once/if they are gone, so I have a similar plan of draining at least some of them in the course of the next several months.

    Humpday!

    1) A very beautiful autumn morning- the leaves are really starting to display colors now, and the morning light really show them to best advantage.

    2) Am in Boucheron! Perfect for a lovely day like today.

    3) Final review of WEN cleansing conditioner:
I have not suffered any hair loss or rashes on my scalp. I have kinky curly hair but the amounts called for using the product in the shower is somewhat excessive- for my neck length hair I found one golfball size of the cleanser to be more than enough, since it is VERY concentrated. For about 2-3 days, my hair felt very nice, was easy to style and felt nice; after that it felt rather dry. After a couple of weeks of JUST using the cleanser only my hair felt even more dry, not silky and subtle sheen was gone. After using Kirkland salon shampoo & conditioner the hair was back to it’s silky, krinkly texture

So-final verdict: This is a good product that you would use IN BETWEEN shampoo sessions. It’s VERY concentrated, and I would not leave this on the scalp due to the essential oils used as cleansing and ionic agents. This would be great for those who style their hair a lot with a dryer or who live in drier climates. This is NOT appropriate for those with sensitive skin or hair that is thinning. I will keep the current bottle but send back the rest.

Her development of phage display is no joke- I was using the techniques in undergrad and it is used in all sorts of applications. Just as we use spaceships to explore space and fix satellites, so to we can use phage display to use viruses and bacteria to explore our internal universe and fix it, too.

I hope you won’t think too much less of me when I say that I’m annoyed that chem Nobel prizes keep going to biochemists. What about THE REST OF US?? I myself found biochem agonizingly boring and resent and disagree with the implication that it’s an inherently more valuable field. Can’t we have a separate bio Nobel that biochemists can win all the time instead?? The last female chem Nobel laureate (Yonath) won it for biochem, too!!

I think that with inorganic chem it is lumped in with physics (I hear you howling) and the implication totally that biochem, with it’s immediate economic possibilities is deemed more valuable.

My perfume today is Traversee du Bosphore–I have a decant. I always think it has cherry pipe tobacco among its notes–it does not. I like this one, but I think it suits very cold weather, wool sweaters and heavy coats, the best.

In honor of International Teachers’ Day–a shout out to my 10th grader’s 8th grade science teacher who stopped by last night to pick up boxes of used Lego we had in our basement. She’s doing some kid’s rocket building project this weekend at a fair and wanted the Lego, and she asked my very sweet but spectrummy son to be her assistant. She’s won a bunch of teaching awards, but we love her for the sunshine she brings.

Ditto this! This whole culture is so apathetic about education. What happened to learning for the joy of learning? What happened to fostering curiosity in kids? Now it’s all about learning in order to make maximum money, or skipping education all together to become a “celebrity” or “football star.” So sad. I don’t know how teachers stay motivated because they get BS from all sides and are paid an insultingly low salary. Oh, boy, I need to step down before I get really wound up! ????

Was chatting with one of my son’s teachers the other day who was saying that she and her husband, both gainfully employed, who rent in a not very safe neighborhood, have no chance whatsoever of ever buying a house here. I am pretty sure they are going to move away. It is just not worth it for them. Such a bummer.

Rather more Miss Dior EDT than I planned this morning–the slightly borked sprayer on this vintage bottle dribbles and splurts rather than spritzes. But extra Miss Dior is not a bad thing, right?

Breath of God for the rest of my day–I know this is a love it or hate it scents, but I seem to tame the weirdness of most of the more unusual perfumes I’ve tried. Or maybe I just out-weird them into timidity. Who knows?

You smell very elegant. Ah, yes wonky sprayers is one of the joys so to speak of vintage bottles; recently a very consciencious ebay seller cancelled my purchase and refunded me on finding the spray was intermittent. On the other hand MD keeps very well and smells as if it had been made yesterday.

        Blimey, that’s an impressive seller!
And yes, this smells fab. not even a hint of nail polish in the top notes which I’ve encountered in a couple of other bottles.

Joining you with vintage Miss Dior; it was that kind of day. My bottle is a splash version so I just poured it into my hand.

I can’t easily decant from this bottle as it has a plastic ring around the opening; I did try to remove it ever so gently but it didn’t want to budge so I will have to pour away. I may have to track down a spray version as well.

If it’s the ring that sits inside the neck of the bottle… I’ve had luck using an opened paperclip of the tine of a fork. You pop that under on one side, and lever against the other side of the bottle neck, rotate a touch and try again, and then back. Hopefully that should wiggle it up.

I’m super excited to go see A Star is Born tonight with a girlfriend! I already have a wee crush on Bradley Cooper- I’m afraid this may send me over the edge haha. And I think Lady Gaga is so talented…

I’m in Kenzo Jungle l’Elephant from a sample I found while cleaning things out last weekend. OH MY GOODNESS I had forgotten how GREAT it is. I feel like someone put this up in the freebiemeet last time, and now I’m so sad I didn’t jump on it! I’ll be terribly sad when my sample is empty.

It can be found at the discounters for not terribly too much money. I’m trying to figure out how to deal with this fact in light of my newly motivated efforts not to buy anything else for the rest of 2018, you know, thanks to another hideous quarter report to Donatella. Does it count as a BUB if it’s a backup to a sample?

Oh, don’t dither! A discounted bottle doesn’t count, Donatella told me so. Plus, the Elephant is like no other. I’m down to half a bottle and seriously considering a BUB because I’m afraid it will disappear off the shelves soon. Yes, I’m totally enabling, but this one is so worth it!’

Showered from the vat of Trader Joe’s all-in-one shampoo, conditioner, body wash that I purchased yesterday. Not that I need any more bath products, other than shampoo. But, it has a nice, light fragrance with bergamot, citrus, sage, etc etc…. we will see how well it works as shampoo. I will say it has abundant lather…

Body lotion is the coconut, lemon stuff I got from Whole Foods. Don’t like the lotion that much but the scent is refreshing. I think it’s going to be part of the “use it up” project.

California Rêverie for my actual fragrance.

I woke up with a bad sinus headache so I needed a perfume that wouldn’t be irritating. I went for an evaporating bottle of oil, Acousticjus Flamenco, which was a special line from Liz Zorn/Soivohle many years ago. It smells of red roses, carnations, and spices and wears close to the skin. It’s perfect for our chilly weather too.

I find everything from Zoologist to be intense, even when the notes sound like they belong to a light and airy fragrance. There are some that I would enjoy a lot in a lighter form, but I have trouble with the potency overall from that line. Although I’m sure that’s what some people love about them :-)

Started off the day in By Kilian’s Moonlight in Heaven, picking up less of the usual coconut-and-rice sweetness than I normally do. Once that faded, I decided to re-test my sample of Dame’s Soliflore Cactus Orchid. I love that fragrance house, but I’m afraid this one is not for me. It shows up on my skin with a plastic, oddly sour note. Sigh. Someone will likely benefit from my sadness via the freebiemeet.

In Ciel d’Opale today, which is perhaps my best all around scent – at least the one I got the most compliments on (like, 2 – I think my habit of shoving my arm into people’s faces and imploring them to “smell this!” does not result in compliments most of the time).
    Ciel d’Opale is lovely. I only have a 10ml travel spray and I’m wondering whether I need a back-up.
Happy Hump Day! Since I’m not teaching Friday (fall break day), my hump day feels very smooth.

It is really pretty – came in the Ann Gerard coffret/discovery set a few years back, along with Cuir de Nacre and Perle de Mousse, in 10ml minis. I liked them all but didn’t love any of them enough to seek out more than 10mls.

Eschmeling, I loved Ciel d’Opale enough to buy the 60 ml bottle, so if you ever feel like you need a back up decant, give me a holla on the boards here. Unlikely that I’ll ever thunk this bottle, pretty as the perfume is, and as much as I really like it.

Will do, and thanks for letting me know! Of course, I’m kind of hankering after the bottle, too…

Further comment….those sneakers are a hoot. I once noticed a young women on an uncrowned subway wearing white embellished Gucci sneakers. I nudged my husband and pointed them out, telling him the estimated price. He was stunned. I mostly struggled with the idea of wearing them on the subway…

And of course, sometimes the raggedy looking ones actually cost more!

Just wearing Kiehl’s musk lotion today. Maybe if no one can smell me at work then they will all leave me alone?

Is the lotion discontinued? I cannot find it here in Montréal.

I’m wearing Dilettante today. Fumerie is having their fall swap later this month and I think this is going. I want orange blossom less than once a year and need the space in my cabinet for more frequently worn scents.

That’s awesome that a perfumerie organizes swaps – how does it work?

Lovely sunny weather where I am today. ???? It’s almost as if Mother Nature is trying to apologize for last night. We had some SCARY thunder and lightning for a couple of hours at least. ⚡ It reminded me of summer storms that roll through the Great Plains and Midwest. The science geek part of me was wondering why some of the lightning looked pink! The tired grumpy adult part of me just wanted some quiet so she could fall asleep.

SOTD = JM Lime Basil & Mandarin. So nice, I had to wear it twice (in a row)! ????

I really miss thunderstorms. Where I grew up we would get them all summer; really wicked ones. I used to sit outside with my Dad on the front step and watch the storms roll in.

Where I’m living now it’s quite an event if we ever get a storm. My hubby and I will park ourselves outside and watch for lightning and anticipate the crack of thunder. ????

Wow, pink lightning. Impressive! Glad you had a lovely sunny day today.

    SOTD = Chanel No.19 EDP

Why not? Actually, I was inspired by my outfit today: lime green cotton slab short-sleeve T., dark olive green 3/4 sleeve open cotton cardigan and brown slacks.

I’ve started to use a hard clamshell keyboard for my iPad. I haven’t used it often enough yet to give it a proper test drive but I am liking it so far. It does almost triple the weight of the iPad so the convenience factor goes down a notch. OTOH, it is protective. It’s a Flavirmate keyboard in Rose Gokd which I got from Amazon, The instructions that came with it were useless.
