Thursday scent of the day 9/27

Posted by Robin on 27 September 2018 241 Comments

Almost-Friday and World Tourism Day. (And don't forget the freebiemeet is this weekend!) What fragrance are you wearing?

My full-credit pick: Bruno Fazzolari Lampblack.

Reminder: on 9/28, wear a fragrance by Byredo, Berdoues or Bruno Fazzolari, if you have one. Partial credit for any other small-ish brand that starts with the letter B.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

    Excited for a Birkenstock trunk show at a local shoe store today. I just realized I haven’t gotten a new pair of shoes since March, and those were for work. So they don’t really count, right?

    I’m in Miller Harris Fleur Oriental, from a very generous swapmeet partner.
    This is perfectly named, light in weight, but spicy. Great for the weather…it’s 68 degrees out there, y’all, and a high of 79 today! Yippee!!! I get to wear an actual long sleeved shirt!

          I love their Fig, purchased the big bottle many years ago and I love this more than Diptyque’s fig. It has woods and a sap note but no excessive sweetness.

    SotD = Berdoues Vanira Moorea

    VM works best if I spritz and walk through the cloud. The delicate green-orange-vanilla lasts when it falls on clothes and hair. Love it!

    Bear’s mention of Ziggy reminded me
    of e. e. cummings:

    To be nobody but yourself
    in a world
    which is doing its best,
    night and day,
    to make you everybody else
    means to fight
    the hardest battle
    which any human being can fight;
    and never stop fighting.

    I’m a cp failure today in Aura, but I still smell great! Last night I tested Cloud by Adriana Grande. I really liked it. To me, it was similar to Vanille Insensee. Don’t trust me though, because I looked it up on fragrantica and I’m clearly not smelling what the rest of the world is. That seems to be the case with alot of what I like though.

    Still in Epic this morning and just ordered Amouage Honour body butter for my mom. A full bottle wasn’t in the cards and won’t be in the cards for a while. That’s ok, she will use the body butter a lot faster than a bottle of perfume. After my shower I am going to switch to some vintage Shalimar, it’s time to bust open some vintage extrait.

    Muskapalooza Thursday. In a wee bit of SL Muscs Koublai Khan layered with SJP Stash and Narciso Rodriguez for her edt. By the time I arrived to the office, had settled into the most cozy, radiant Egyptian musk. Must start jotting down the spritz ratios when I layer. Can never seem to duplicate the recipe when it works, lol.

        It’s a licorice and cocoa gourmand… with a bit of vetiver…. absolutely delicious and in my top five. But I have to add that I have been wearing Rose Cassis Paradis also from 1000 Flowers and that’s growing on me too… several folks have said it’s a better version of Lush’s Rose Jam… really delicious and I am loving it too!!!

            I really love supporting this perfumer. It is a one woman indie/artisanal line out of Grasse, France (but she is Canadian). Not that the fragrances are the same but the perfumer reminds me quite a bit of Laurie Erickson in that she is a small business and very much in touch with her customers. The packaging is exquisite and she even wrote me a personal note! I also love that she is not churning out 20 fragrances a year. Right now I think there are only six or so in her collection. Plus she has a beautiful sampler set and also sells travel sprays. And the full bottles are affordable (once you convert CAD to USD you will see that they are cheaper than what you think they are).

        It made me realize that I DO like black licorice as a note.

      I’ve been contemplating that sample pack since you sent me the link! I told myself I was going to stop buying samples, since my sample sea is turning into a sample galaxy, but this one is tempting. And, uh, it would be supporting a small business. An artist. So.

        I say go for it…because she is a one woman show and such a sweetheart..plus if you convert CA to USD you will see that the sample pack really isn’t that expensive….I am in love with both the Rose Cassis Paradis (want an FB for the summer) and the Orange Blossom Petal (want that one for the spring) but I will also tell you that middle Marzipan (who is female) shared a small bottle of Ode for Him with her brother….so that’s a good one too…lots of spices in it…I might just have to get a bottle for the youngest Marzipan for his birthday and then I can steal some :) I am certain there might be something in that sampler you like. And if not the presentation is so beautiful (the box) you could always gift it away..nice stocking stuffer.

    Trying out Marni Rose from the swap meet – thanks Kelly! Totally work appropriate which is what I had hoped for – many rose perfumes bloom too much during “dance time” in my classes for my nose so I avoid them on work days. Trying to figure out how much to put in the freebie meet, at the same time trying to help my son (freshman) with the logistics of his Homecoming “ask”. When did having a social media-worthy ask become a necessity? (Donuts are involved with this, apparently).

    I was going to polish off my Bal d’Afrique sample today (there isn’t even a full application left!), but another of my swapmeet packages arrived yesterday (they’re still coming in! I have two presents I still haven’t received! I think it might be better stretched out like this, so I have occasional jolts of happiness from week to week :) ).

    The package smelled of the most spectacular sandalwood ever, and upon opening the package, I discovered the smell was emanating from a travel spray of Tam Dao, which seems to be even more spectacular than I remember! (Perhaps I sniffed the EDT; this appears to be the EDP.) So anyway, I’m in Tam Dao today and I’ll be so sad when my ~4 mL or however much I have run out, because this scent is just perfect. It smells like the Platonic ideal of Koyel. It smells like what I want to be when I grow up.

    So unfortunately not following the CP today. #sorrynotsorry

        I am itchiy to try Cuir Imperial that Kevin reviewed by Ormonde Jayne. There is another gorgeous scent by Linda Pilkington called vanille d’iris that has the same effect… becoming part of your skin and part of one’s essence (difficult to articulate the way this perfume is!). And btw, vanille d’iris is really for those that dislike Vanilla as a scent as it’s made solely from the leathery pod…not an ounce of sugarness!

        I’ve been meaning to try Miller & Bertaux scents, especially A Quiet Morning. I think it’s supposed to evoke India? And I love any scent that evokes quiet, sunrise India. (I love noisy, raucous, colorful India, too, but that requires more effort to love.) And basmati notes in perfume sound great. Grains seem like great skin scents to me.

    I had to get out my (disorderly) bin of samples and sort through to find anything by one of the CP “B” perfumers. Did find one which I’ll reserve for tomorrow. For today I’m wearing Malle Portrait of a Lady, one of the ones I unearthed that I haven’t tried for years. I still dislike it–a lot–it’s got some element that just makes it seem harsh and strident, burning to my nose. I love the list of notes and know many people really adore it, but it just doesn’t work for me. (I’d offer to give my sample away, but it’s almost empty now.)

      I don’t like it either. When visiting Barney’s a few year ago, the FM rep pushed it so hard. After telling her a thousand times it’s not for me, she gave me 2 spray samples that I didn’t want, all the while acting like she was giving me gold. Talk about not hearing…????????

We are driving up to Durango, CO one day and I want to go, and the other day we are going to the Balloon Fiesta here in ABQ and I will take that whole day off. Other than that I intend to work to get away from the house lol.

    Not on point with community project today but still smelling fab in En Voyage Zelda. A little spritz before bed and still going strong.

    Van Woes: too many to keep track of! Yesterday I went to get the battery isolator installed since I decided not to go with solar (the story of that is another Van Woes episode!). So. Went to a place, the guy gave me an estimate on parts and labor and said it would take 3 hours, which seemed a bit long to me, but what do I know? So, two hours of waiting and I asked for an update. The office guy disappeares, comes back 10 minutes later and say the installer is “gone.” As in gone since they pulled the van into the bay. Nothing done. At ALL! Apparently, he had a “court date” he didn’t tell me about, and was going to have me pay for his time while he was at court…! Is there not one decent person left in the world?!?

    Of course there is, which is one of the reasons I visit NST on the daily- to get my much needed dose of “good people.”✌????

    Currently in samples of Bruno Fazzolari ummagumma, Amouage interlude man, Ormonde Jayne Ta’if, and Divine L’homme infini. Trying to decide if there’s one I can’t live without for fall/winter. I also just ordered a bottle of the new Mona Di Orio, Santal Nabatea. Oh my god you guys this is a sandalwood holy grail.. instead of the typical creamy blonde facets that most perfumes focus on this is pure red, nutty, aromatic Mysore goodness. I spent one day with the sample and then ordered the full bottle and I NEVER do that. I have a feeling this will make a lot of best of 2018 lists.

    No credit today: Jasmin de Nuit. I’ve decided this is the next target of my “use it up” challenge… it’s so cozy in this fall weather. And it seems to briefly re-bloom about four hours after applying. Only 40 mls left to go!

    I’ve always had a small desk stash but I can’t believe it took me this long to think of bringing in a BUNCH of samples so I can be more experimental on days I don’t wear perfume to work. Wearing Cuir d’Ange from the swap meet, which is lovely and so very “Ellena does leather” I laughed out loud. It might well usurp Kelly Caleche’s spot in my wardrobe, should budget someday permit. Actually with the heliotrope I almost feel it can take over for both Kelly C and Eau d’Hiver, so really it’s practically free.

    I would’ve joined Team Lamblack, but decided it was too weird for work.
    I decided to revisit a sample of Dusita La Douceur de Siam, which I tried once and wasn’t wowed, thought it smelled familiar and a bit too sour. I’m liking it more today, but still not wowed. I guess it reminds me of something like Idylle, a rosy crisp floral of sorts.
    Which reminds me, I got a sniff of Cartier Carat yesterday, which is pretty and in the same genre. Not something I need to own, though.

    Partial sun again today, whoo hoo! Any break in the unrelenting grey carpet of clouds is a welcome one! It was gorgeous earlier, though. ????????????????

    Song of the day = Hold Back The Rain, by Duran Duran. ☔????

    SOTD = Byredo Bal d’Afrique, from the sample stash, and a great swap partner. Also, thanks to everyone who had mentioned it earlier this week. I guess I needed that little nudge. I’m still figuring out what I smell with this one besides vetiver. It also seems quieter than Flowerhead was. It will be fun resniffing this one!

    SOTD = Bruno Fazzolari Ummagumma

    W00t. Resinous spicy incense and TONKA BEAN!!!

    Smelled in the wild IN THE OFFICE – Box of Eels but I couldn’t tell who because I was so intent on my work that when my headI whipped up, several people had gone by.

    Commuting Woe No. 457:

    Dumb Smart Light – there’s this one light at a T near the train station that was supposed to detect traffic and adjust the timing of the light accordingly. Somehow, either an adjustment was made or bird poop got into the camera that it could be more than 2-3 minutes before the lights would change. In fact, sometimes, one sees the count down, then the lights don’t change! Thank goodness there’s a 7-11 at the corner where I could turn into and then make a left to go on to the train station. I used to judge people who did that back when the lights took no more than 45 seconds to switch once there was 1 car waiting but I probably have those people to thank for “showing me the way”.

    I’ll save the 2nd Commuting Woe to tomorrow. I call it – Keep the Baby Talk at Home.
